Character Name: Dr. Hudson Wayland Hightower
Age: 62
Homeworld: Mars, Solar System
Position onboard the Voidhawk: Head of the Foreign Object Examination Sector (FOE Sector)

Strengths:
  • Varied Expertice: Thanks to his abundant studies and his formidable intellect, Hightower is an expert in several fields such as Physics, Astronomy, Electronic Engineering and Geology.
  • Sharp Memory: Hightower's astonishing memory is one of the main reasons of his academic success.
  • Serenity: Hightower is able to mantain his composture on a great deal of stressful situations.
  • Experience: His advanced age doesn't mean nothing. Hightower has failed, succeeded and lived through many things and, thanks to that, he's accumulated a great deal of experience regarding how to deal with many situations.

Weaknesses:
  • Pride: Hightower is, above all, a very proud individual. He is incredibly stubborn and has a hard time accepting a good idea that didn't come from him.
  • Elitist: On par with his pride, Hightower is very dismissive towards the people who aren't good enough, in his eyes, to fill a position.
  • Advanced Age: Along with the experiences, his long lifespan has begun to take its toll on his body. He now needs to regularly use glasses and his body is not as athletic as it was before.
  • Martial Inexperience Contrasting his vast knowledge, Hightower has no remarkable skill when it comes to actual combat and his ability to operate a gun has dwindled with the years.

Other Important Personality Traits: He's an avid smoker.

Bio: Hudson Wayland Hightower was born on what was historically known as the First Colony of Mars. His ancestors had all been renowned academics, each and everyone of them having an important contribution to modern science at one point of their lives, and Hudson didn't want to be the exception. Gifted with a priviledged social position, a prodigious intellect and experts at an arm's length, the young heir of the Hightower family spent his childhood studying to become the famous scientist his parents expected him to be. And he didn't fail to deliver.
When he was 25 years old, he had officially earned the title of Doctor Hightower after he finished his career in Physics and became the first member of his family to begin studying Quantum Physics. Year after year passed around, and his repertory of titles kept growing. But that wasn't remarkable at all compared to his ancestor's achievements. Hudson knew that, if he didn't manage to make a groundbreaking discovery, his name would be lost across the echoes of history. So, with that in mind, the 40-year old doctor began to seek ways to acomplish a scientific breakthroughin any of his fields of expertice. He managed to give several existing inventions slight improvements, but it never was something that could astonish the scientific community.
When he heard about the Voidhawk's existance, and the voyages that it was planned to make, Hudson volunteered himself to take part of the space faring operation, arguing to himself that there was no better place to make a discovery than the vast, unknown regions of deep space.

Why does your Character want to venture with the Voidhawk?: To make a reputation of himself via the discoveries he could possibly make on board of the ship.

@UberBlutwurst I'd say just add a little more to the bio, maybe what he studied more specifically, along with some kind of actual track record (where and what he worked on). Also, could you clarify his onboard position?

Would Playing a rogue AI/Intelligent machine be possible? how exactly would the laws be enforced on a Self-Learning Neural network designed to mimic the human brain? How common are rebellions/ civil rights movements for non-human intelligences.

That'd be the section where all important discoveries are initially sent when they're first acquired. Their job is to determine the nature of the object before sending it to the most appropiate section for a more in-septh analysis.

For example, if the Voidhawk's crew were to bring aboard the remains of an unknown silicon-based lifeform, it'd be FOE's task to determine what kind of treatment it gets: if that of a corpse or that of a rock.

@Lucidnonsense By rouge do you mean AWOL, or like the D&D class. The first is fine, the second I dont know how that would work. I'd say if you're a learning AI, you probably dont want to tell anyone that. The few experiments with sentient AI have gone...badly.
@Starlance We filled protector already, but if you dont mind being a Scientist we're happy to have you. Or, if one of our three (Doctor, Linguist, Diplomat) doesn't show up in the next day or two, you can snag that one

I was thinking rogue but not like...Glados, perhaps it hides the fact that its rogue but often argues the case for free will and equality and all that. I was thinking some kind of scientist. It generally still obeys the three laws but mostly because it generally doesnt agree with them as principles. The second law is probably the one it has the most difficulty with but it can probably usually argue that in doing so it is somehow protecting human life.

Unfortunately, playing the role of a scientist would require me to understand the field the character specializes in. That's far beyond my capacity.

Oh, are any other robot laws used by different machines? the three laws run into some...problems...some questions I should ask before I play a machine intelligence that at least pretends to follow the laws.

How is Injury defined?
How Is human defined?
How is Harm defined?

A space trolley is heading down the tracks at 1000 Miles per hour, it can go one of two paths, One which runs over one person and another which runs over 5 people, Which track will the robot choose?

A robot witnesses a person fooling around with alien technology of unknown function, The Robot calculates a 34% chance that this device could cause catastrophic damage and kill millions of humans. The robot calculates that it it fired its disintigration beam at the human the human would 100% be killed and the weapon has a 0% chance of killing everyone. What does the robot do?

A gangster holds hostages, it orders a robot to go kill people or the hostages will parish, The robot has no means of killing the gangster

An alien species is evolving on another planet, this species could concievably in thousands of years become a threat to humanity. Is the Robot obligated to destroy all life on the planet?

Here is an interesting article on AI ethics, certainly not the only one, its a topic of much debate.

I think I'm going to drop out from this. I've noticed that I've signed up on too many roleplays, and I don't want to drop out in the middle of any of them thanks to that. If there's a spot free in a near future, I might come back, otherwise I'll remain as a spectator. Sorry for the inconvenience.
