@Ophidian except none of them are designed for reentry. I'm not going to kill you by just landing on a planet over and over, the army is for the ground. I don't think I'll be killing anybody, in fact. not the UU style to kill off other species when they could make them a client state and leech their tech designs.

There's also the fact they outmass the Death Star (mistaken for a moon....), going from the numbers given for it, by a fair margin. Death Star comes out to 74.5645 miles for the curious.

And like I said:

I'll be honest. I've had people swear the same thing, up and down. It's never turned out well.

I've got a rule, my "trouble" instincts going off once can be ignored. Twice? Time to pack up and go. I do appreciate what you're trying to do, but I've seen too many issues, too much trouble, start in exactly the same manner to be remotely comfortable with the numbers being tossed around here, in story terms and in terms of power levels. I've only got so much time to sit down and write, and it might as well be for something I'm sure I'll enjoy, savvy?

And presently, there's not alot that's going to change that equation, unless my boss calls me up and decides to pay me for not coming into work.

@Ophidian I designed it to be a valuable ally to pop up in a direct battle, not a genocidal kill and hate everyone use-ships-as-instawin superpower. they don't even have shields. story trumps all, and if it makes for a good story, fuck any numbers or mechanics.

@Ophidian well. I feel bad about scaring someone away from an rp, so go ahead and stay. I'll take my worthless nation and fuck off.

You can also scale back certain "problematic" elements or just play them low in the NRP.
I'd hate to see any player to leave.

Also to be honest destroying countries in casual warship salvos is pretty staple in space opera. So having huge ships is actually not a guaranteed bonus.
Just try to play them low when it'd dominate the plot or something. Fictional writers do that all the time.

my plan was to leverage my tiny but powerful fleet and army to manipulate people via treaties, promises for assistance, etc. but if that's going to scare someone off, I'll be the one to step out the door.

@Keyguyperson

I'd hate to see anybody leave either, so maybe you could just discuss it a bit? And get Keyguyperson involved too, since they are GM and thus have the final say. :/ I just think some discussion could solve this without anybody leaving. Hopefully.

@Ophidian well. I feel bad about scaring someone away from an rp, so go ahead and stay. I'll take my worthless nation and fuck off.

You can't please everyone-the fact this RPG, going by the GM ruling which was you'll recall in your favor, so do trust them on this if you do not trust me-pleases you instead of me is in no way your fault. If it wasn't you, it'd have been someone else.

Fact is, the Neo-Soviets were built with "primitive but refined" as the core of their technological (weaponwise at least) base-mass drivers, nuclear missiles, deployed in-

This.

The concept was this.

The fact technology is basically racing along to be far more advanced then I expected-I took the Terran Union as indicative of tech levels to be honest, isn't your fault. Your nation, truly, was just sort of the final indication, when I got notice of the ship sizes, that what I was going for just plain won't work, and that power levels in this RPG just aren't going to be anywhere near what I reckoned. The fact it was signed off on and approved, the ship sizes, all form powerful indicators.

It's also in no way your fault. Like I said:

If it wasn't you, it'd have been someone else.

It's also hardly a reason to call something you clearly put time into "worthless"

BTW, how large are the warships of people?
Mine would be between 200-800m with Vega-class being around 675m.
Although I plan to have my ships being relatively small compared to what everyone else has.

I'm thinking similar sizes 150-1000m on average, but with some larger ships that probably fill a more logistical role.

I might leave as well. I agree with Ophidian about people saying that they are going for the story; but the majority don't keep their word. And I also feel like there's going to be some tension between someone in the near future that would kill the roleplay. I don't want anyone to have a ship that's the size of Cuba, then ensured everyone that they weren't in this roleplay 'to win it'.

If you weren't in to win it, then why have a ship bigger than Cuba? It doesn't make sense.

Is size necessarily an advantage? I imagine a nuke or a projectile moving at relativistic speed would be capable of doing serious damage

I hope people know what operation fishbowl was. As nukes in space are far more dangerous then on earth.

@Lucidnonsense, I was trying to give an example of someone that claims to be all 'for the story'. Then, they add something that's powerful and gives their nation/empire an advantage. It was a bad example, but since we were talking about...

I have been on about five months and I have seen several players doing what I am talking about. I don't like how the majority of nation roleplays that I have been in always had that problem.

Not a classic nuke but space opera settings can easily get to the level where ships can wipe planets with their firepower.
Besides, those ships are kinda like Death Stars. Are we seriously banning people to re-enact classics like Star Wars in a freeform sci-fi game?

@Willy Vereb, I don't remember the Death Star moving around like a ship... (we must of watched different Star Wars films..)

No-one should have several weapons, ships, etc. that can destroy planets in the matter of seconds or be overpowering. One is fine, but eight of them isn't.

Yes, indeed we did. It isn't like the Death Star had a hyperdrive and were in the process of circling around Javin to get a clean shot on the 4th Moon Javin IV.
Also if one planetbuster is fine, why 8 of them is a big no-no?
That's kinda stupidly specific.
It's as if saying throwing around nuclear weapons in a cold war era NRP is fine so long you limit it only to 500 and having 5000 warheads is suddenly a gamebreaker.

It strikes me that we all expected different games then what we ended up getting.

Mutually exclusive expectations tend to result in....well this. In my experience.

@Willy Vereb, I tend to be more realistic than most while in roleplays. That's why I don't usually join fantasy roleplays.

If the Death Star did move, then it would of taken time to move because it's big as fuck. It shouldn't be moving at the same speeds at a fucking ship. Also, it isn't 'stupidly specific.' Having control of eight planetbusters is overpowering as fuck and you can easily destroy several worlds in one single post. Having one shows that you're the 'big kid' around the universe and nations won't fuck with you.

I don't know how to feel about you. You're interesting...

Planets are unfortunately, vulnerable targets, while planetary destroying weapons like the Death Star are probably impractical, a star faring civilization could probably create planetary extinction level events depressingly easily, now if the defender is a star faring civilization they might be able to survive the wasteland but it would surely pay a heavy economic toll.

This makes interplanetary warfare scary, with more Cold War style intrigue than war
