So did we explode? I was basically doing Total Annihilation/Supreme Commander but with more space and aliens. And brain uploading.

Nah, I don't think we've exploded quite yet.

And Total Annihilation? Kickass, I love that game. I wish I could find my copy. And do you mean more brain uploading? Since I don't think it's possible to have more brain uploading than Total Annihilation. XD

EDIT: And as for what I expected from the RP... I dunno, probably something more akin to 'realistic'. But not, you know, real-realistic since there's magic and whatnot and I am more than willing to admit I'm not knowledgeable enough for real-realistic. But I wasn't quite expecting anything quite on the level of the Universal Union, but it's not too big a deal for me because of the fact that there's literally no chance of the greater Union getting involved.

I'm going for a way-out-there future nation, one that's been in the making for billions of years. most Sci fi stuff is near future, but I'm going for far far future.

@Keyguyperson

I'm just going to apologize real quick for suggesting people wait for you then going ahead and doing this without you here.
<Snip>
I think you are actually overreacting here quite a bit.
Chill, people having arguments is a good thing. It lets us seam over potential stresses and above all, to interact.
I really don't like when people freak out for a game actually having debates. Nobody is throwing insults at people or at least not in earnest.

Also what's the problem with each people trying for a different style? That's pretty standard in NRPs. Everyone has their own ideas. You can actually reconcile the two with ease using the wonder known as creative writing. Making a story allows you to have so many ways to seam over differences. Same with freeform RPs. The only difference is that both sides have to be willing.

I realize this was not the intent, but you come off as sort of condescending here. My experience has been very very different from yours, suffice it to say, I've seen arguments kill games, I've been people pulling for different styles kill games.

The problem here is the power levels of the styles involved-fact is space opera is gonna stomp on realistic fantasy, and I doubt the realistic fantasy players want to be stomped on. I certainly didn't, and I left when it seemed like it'd inevitably lead to that due to the tech disparity.

@Lucidnonsensehey, the organics do have big robots, they've just figured out how to prevent ai rebellions. checkmate avian.

edit; also I plan on stomping on nobody. my tech level is high enough that I even helped you guys by telling you how to defeat me.

Hey man, maybe they realized that creating such things was a shit idea if they wanted to stay in control.

I'm just wondering what such a culture even wants in other galaxies.

If they can make energy out of basically nothing (Vacuum energy) and have 'sufficiently advanced technology that's indistinguishable from magic'... what business do they have in screwing around with other galaxies? Don't they have better things to do? I mean, any culture that can do that realizes that the universe is going to suffer from heat-death eventually. If they have effectively unlimited power, why are they wasting time goofing about in the universe instead of fixing the heat death problem?

Edit: I don't think such a culture would even think on the same level as any other culture. They should have different things to think about aside from 'more land' 'more energy' 'more smarts' and whatnot. I doubt they actually used up everything in their home galaxies. Life has a fundamental aspect; it won't do shit it feels like it doesn't actually need to. If they have multiple galaxies, I doubt they have 'regular' problems we can relate to. What other problems could they have?

>prevent AI rebellion

What purpose do the Avians themselves serve in society? are they just pampered pets?

Thats another valid question, Or dealing with something on a similar scale, I think the "Xeelee" are a good example of an Intergalactic civilization done well.

@LHG100 their tech is entirely stolen and improved on from other species, so that's one reason. second is they need materials, and lots of them to either 1. stop heat death, or 2. bug out to a newer universe when all the energy runs out.

edit: while avian dudes make the final decisions, a lot of it is done through ai calculations that an avian said "yeah sure" to. not a bad summary.

I'll be honest, the Universal Union as is was a problem for me, and part of why I bugged out of the ships, which alone, I'd have been fine trying to hash out in part due to what Verb said:

My prime concern is with the size of WrongEndoftheRainbow's faction. And that's more on the level of aethetics and comfort in terms of worldbuilding. Universal Union is way too huge and kinda trivializes the entire game with its existence. Sure, WrongEndoftheRainbow's actual faction is far smaller but the existence of such power still puts a certain pressure on things which we might not want. Ophidian compared this to a sword of Damocles hanging above our heads. While that may be an exaggeration it's certainly not that nice of a feeling when you think about plots for this RP.

I mean, to quote a convo I had with him:

I also wasn't comfortable with the idea that there was a Universal Union out there that could crush us all like dogs if it noticed us-it seems like...well, what's the point of building these nations then? Telling these stories? Get big enough to get noticed and stomped on? Yaaaaaaay. Tisha and Molotov lived happily ever after until the Universal Union noticed the upstart humans and conquered them in seven days. Yaaaaaay.

It's just...what's the point? Narrative-wise, these things matter alot to me.

I am probably closer to that. Basically the only reason why the Federation isn't approaching the singularity because the Last Great War and its military tech abuses scared up everyone pretty bad what rouge AIs or just plain madmen with too much power concentrated into their hands can really do.
Ego the Living Battlestation incident, for example. Where some crazy warmonger decided he should take over the Rainbow Cluster alone by merging his consciousness with a huge battlestation, amassing industry&resources then waging war on all Solarian nations at once.
Because why not?
300 years went by and there are a list of convoluted laws for how technology is allowed to be utilized.

@WrongEndoftheRainbow The thing is, if you have infinite energy, infinite energy is effectively equal to infinite mass. E equals MC squared after all, and such a culture that can build infinite energy devices, probably knows how to turn energy directly into mass. If they can improve tech, they can obviously think up new concepts, so the reason that 'they're looking for more knowledge to steal' doesn't make sense.

I think the UniUnion would've stopped being a culture that thought of 'material needs' long, long ago. The only problems they could have that I can even comprehend, being a member of a filthy single planet species, is 'hey, let's stop heat death' 'hey, let's make more of ourselves and screw around in mock wars. I'm really bored' 'hey, let's play gods for shits and giggles. I'm really bored', or 'hey, let's make a new universe in our image!' and things such as that.

@Ophidian there's millions of galaxies out there. they won't look in your direction until suddenly you're kicking their teeth in. the narrative very well could be working up to that point. the UU scouts are basically the "get out of my face" assignment for really bad screw up a, so they'll get ignored.

edit: I can only give vague details on my phone, so I'll gather up all the info and get you a big writeup when I get home.

That's straining suspension of disbelief honestly, to get anywhere near the level of challenging the UU, any civ from this game would need to take galaxies for their material needs, and you've said the UU deals on the level of galaxies-you're telling me they won't notice a power rising like that...well, I don't quite buy it honestly.

Especially when the powers here have such diverse tech-something tech-leeches would certainly notice spreading and expanding, considering how much their own existence, from your own words, depends on it.

I just think the behavior you're describing, and the attitudes, fit a galaxy-tier extra-galactic power more then they do something on the level you've described.

That reminds me alot of the Therians from AT-43, They are way more advanced and way bigger than most factions, Have a primary goal of stopping heat death, and the "military" is fighting entirely for fun.

Oh, and another point. If they have A.I.'s (which are presumably crazy-powerful, much like the rest of their culture), they should probably have computers.. which are likely extremely powerful, and if they can make star-sized vessels, they can make star-sized computers, theoretically. If they can make energy out of nothing, they can probably make a star sized or even greater mega-computer and upload their entire society's consciousness(es?) into the thing. Or multiple ones. Or one for each of their citizens. Hell, since they have unlimited vacuum energy, they can probably make a galaxy sized computer and calculate PI to the last digit.

I mean, once you get to a galaxy-sized culture that can screw around with multiple galaxies, nothing else matters.

Right. It also occurs to me it's time to put up or shut up. Why am I still posting/talking if, as indicated by Vereb, things have now calmed down and my worries were for naught?

Why was I still posting in the first place.

Well. Being honest, it looks like I wasn't quite ready to leave as I believed.

a big misconception is that they have infinite energy. unless i did a boo boo by accident in my app, they can draw energy from vacuum, not infinite energy from vacuum.
