Sue
Sue followed Mimic, sticking close to Anthony and Katherine throughout the way to a place she’d not been before. It was only recently that Sue still remembered Mimic hugging her in an almost affectionate way, the thought still lingering in her mind, and the comments she’d gotten from him of being a one-trick pony. She would be lying to herself if she said she wasn’t begrudgingly resenting the thought, but she moved the thought away in place for a happier one; a thought that marked another day of practice and improvement for everyone to see Sue Cassidy as one to be reckoned with.
The forestry came into view and Sue could see the table of the long metallic – no, plastic, things atop it. She did not need Mimic’s clarification and instructions to know that it was paintball they were playing. She paid attention to the words “three paintballs, you’re out” and “powers are allowed as long as they don’t seriously injure your classmates.” This would be an evaluation of no power usage, but teamwork and personal ability. This was legitimately a challenge for Sue.
Sue was almost a liability. She could not aim and shoot very well. Her sight was near perfect but it would be heaven-sent if she actually hit something a way’s yonder if she really tried. Furthermore, her headphones, or better yet, her powers, would give her away so easily. But she did have an idea.
She gladly accepted Anthony’s invitation to join her team and was giddy when she saw Kijani on her team. Sue looked into Anthony’s eyes, a strange grey, how cute. She swore they were a different colour.
She signed to Anthony and everyone else: ”I’m not very good with aiming and shooting… but I do have this.”
Sue took off her headphones and let them hang on her neck. Suddenly the ambient sounds of the environment were amplified, and each and every noise was obvious and almost tangible. If a leaf were to fall, if loud enough, Sue would pick it up and so would her teammates.
She had echolocation.
”Can you guys hear that?” she noted on the footsteps, amidst the crunching of leaves and branches, she looking at the other teams forming. Perhaps her powers did not make the ambience as loud as she thought, they not looking in her way.
She did hear something off the distance. The slight bending of a tree branch, the slight scratching of the tree bark, she looked up and away. She walked toward the sound.
She shook her head around to look for the source of the reverb. She could almost make out a figure with her concentration, somewhere. She just couldn’t tell, since her echolocation was still weak.
She looked and looked, until she saw something. Nothing, probably nothing, she thought.
She turned back, running towards Anthony, not realizing shots were already audible and firing. She took cover behind a tree, awaiting orders.
