You awake to the fresh breeze that hits your face. It feels great after the long sleep you had. In order to keep you in hybernation you need to be in a warm enviroment, unless your body might not wake up. Heat based hybernation is just feeding yourself with narcotics and keeping them dissolved with heat, long enough so you can last a few hundred years. The scientists failed to invent cryogenic freeze by the time the end came so this is all you can have. Bu now that you say that, it is actually pretty cold here, no longer in the pleasurable area.

Jay C looked around and saw no scientists. Aren't there supposed to be a few who would come here to check on them? And why is it so cold. Did someone leave the AC running for the god knows how much time they were out? Nevertheless the terminal that controls the room's working is just on the others side. He takes his first step, but his muscles fail to keep his body satndindg. They are so numb they could even be sticks for all he cares. But it's not the hybernation for sure. They feeded tehm enough narcotics that could kill an enraged elephant. His muscles shouldn't have lsot weight. Meh. He didn't think too much of it. He laid there for a few minutes until he could feel his legs and arms. He coughed up a bit of blood. Never a good sign. He slowly pushed himself up to satnding and looked around the room. It seems that no one was inside. To be honest he just noticed the lack of ligting in the room. It wasn't exactly dark, but now that he could think clearer it seemed that only a few lamps worked and even they weren't enough to make the room brighter than a sky at dusk. He scanned around and spotted the terminal. He began to walk there, but suddenly with a hydraulic hiss as the other capsule in the room opened. He thaught about prorities for a second, so he dropped the idea of checking on the terminal and went to see the other occupant. The systems can wait anyways. He went around his pod, and on the other side was a girl still half asleep, fresh outta hybernation "Wakey, wakey."

Before continuing, he looked at the third and final pod that was located on the far side of the room. It seemed to be open, but he didn't see if anyone was in it from the palce he was standing at. He just shrugged in acknowledgement.

Drago was silent as he sat in the bush, the area around him was a buzz with various nightly bugs all of whom were unaware of his presence among them. The area was barely lite, the darkness was almost blinding as the canopy above let no light through. Drago however could see like a predator with nocturnal vision, too many years spent in the dark of night. Drago moved forward ever so quietly, his feet were bare and made no noises upon his footfalls. In front of him he saw his prey, it was an male deer, a rather large buck with horns to compliment its huge muscular body. It was grazing silently upon the field next to the stream, not even aware of the approaching threat from the bush ten feet away. Ever so slowly Drago lifted the make shift bow and latched an arrow into the string which had been fashioned from many strips of sinew to give it not only strength was durability. Drago pulled the string back as it made a very low elastic creak from the wood the bow was fashioned of.

"Okay Drago you are officially in the zone. Time to break your losing streak tonight with a perfect shot to the neck."

Drago spoke to himself very quietly under his breath, taking in a large breath he quickly held it and steadied the shot, aiming downwind he had a perfect angle on the buck. All the times he had missed with these damn survival bows, all the embarrassment, it was time to become the ultimate outdoors man, a mans man, the clark to gable, the king of Scotland, this was for all the marbles, a 7/10 split to win the bowling championships, the...

"Eventually you have to shoot it, right?"

Drago damned near jumped out of his skin when a voice came out of nowhere right behind in, the arrow released from the bow and quickly disappeared into the darkness as Drago yelped in surprise alerting the buck and forcing it to run away from the stream in a straight beeline into the bush. Drago ran from the bush to the stream as he yelled.

"No! I was so close to winning the bowling championship!"

Drago quickly realized he had just referred to hunting a deer as a bowling tournament and smacked himself in the head. He let himself slide to his ass in defeat as his friend James Davon came out of the bush looking like he had just won the imaginary championship Drago lost.

"So this is how you perceive hunting? Being in a bowling championship... at least now I understand why you can hit the brood side of a barn with survival made weapons, you suck at bowling."

Drago could only look mad for mere moments before he let out a laugh and allowed himself to be pulled to his feet by James. Both of them walked back to their camp which was only about five minutes away and soon were sitting out under the stars with a cozy fire, a man made wigwam, and an uncharacteristic ice cold beer, compliments of James. As Drago let the foul tasting drink down his throat he thanked god for bad tasting inebriation as he felt the warmth of the crackling fire in front of him.

"So how you been bud? Its been such a long time since we last sat out together under the stars and relaxed.

"You know me James I am the pinnacle of optimism, all I need is a smile and a good conversation... and maybe a steak from a local restaurant now and again but keep it to yourself."

Both men laughed at Drago's retort as they became silent again, there was an obvious air of tension between the two of them. Drago noticed it better then James did, he knew that things were changing, the world was changing and almost over night at that. Drago had heard about the rumors concerning the meteorite heading towards earth. He was still reeling from the offer that had been made to him, and offer that would if successful help him to survive the coming possible catastrophe. It was a bitter pill for anyone to swallow and it was even more so for the billions of people who would be affected by it, especially the man who sat across from him whom was not invited to the same opportunity, which is what lead to this night in the first place. James and Drago had been friends for so many years it was almost ridiculous and if Drago accepted this offer they would be parted, possibly for good and that was something painful to both of them.

"have you thought about the offer Drago? I know all this is like a movie and can't be real life, more then you think I do but.. if this thing is real... then having someone like you in the new world would be a godsend for anyone."

"I don't know James, I really don't. The prospect of leaving and... everything being possibly gone when I wake up, especially you, its just.. something I don't know how to feel about. I keep thinking that if this is to be the case then perhaps I should spend as much time as we have left instead of prancing off to be some new world hero. We all gotta pay the price of living sooner or later right? Why not do it with a clear conscious?"

Drago took another drink from the beer as he swallowed it a bit hard, his unusually happy attitude was rather dimmed this night and it was hard not to notice it, especially if you knew him. Even the happiest person in the world couldn't just be optimistic in the face of such a decision and the outcome of that decision. Drago felt a warm hand on his shoulder, he looked up from the beer he had been staring at unknowingly in sort of a trance and James was looking him in the eye.

"I think you should do it... I know how you feel and I feel that way too. Its been a long road ever since I meant you on that back road in Georgia in that man made house of mud brick and straw. Me and you have seen more of the world then most people see in six lifetimes and we have amazing stories to tell three life's from now. But Drago this is bigger then us, then friendship, this could be the difference between the survival of our race and extinction. You have spent your life living without the use of technology, helping others to do the same thing, and if this catastrophe is to come to pass, then the world that is to come will need a man like you to show them the way. Neither one of us wants to see the other go, but its brings me comfort to know that one of us will be here to rebuild our civilization new again, especially someone who can take the darkness away and form it into light just being present."

Drago put his hand on Jame's and squeezed a bit as he let the words sink in, it was hard having to hear them and knowing the reason why they had to be said, but it did not make it any easier to accept it knowing that James would be gone from this world when he awoke in the new world.

"I know your right James, you always had the special ability of seeing things in a bigger picture then I ever could. I know that a decision needs to be made and that time is running out. But let it be made tomorrow and not now. I would rather spend a good night with good food and drink with my closest friend, my brother then... this. Whatever may come, and what may be, let it be decided another day and let us toast a friendship that goes beyond time itself."

James smiled and clinked his beer bottle with Drago's as both men took their last swigs from the bottles, James quickly produced two more for them with a smile as Drago put his hands in the air and let out a funny yelp of delight.

Drago stood silently outside the elevator that would lead him to the underground facility below, a black duffel bag lay clutching in his closed hand, despite the feelings deep down he held an characteristic chipper attitude as many people seemed to be scurrying back and forth around him. Drago looked at the survivalist watch on his wrist, a present from James and realized it was almost time to go. He just had one last thing to do before he went down on the elevator.

"Well well well, who is that good looking yet ugly looking man there. I hope you put the tear ducts on simmer you know I can't stand to see a grown man cry."

Drago smiled as James walked up making his usual jokes, Drago smiled swallowing hard despite seeing James making it harder for him to do what he was about to do. Both men gave each other a big brotherly hug that seemed to last a good long time before either one of them wanted to let go and face each other. Drago found it hard to keep his smile as looked away from James and back towards the elevator, he was rethinking his decision now, and he realized he really didn't want to do this but just stay and enjoy what was left of their lives and go out as friends until the very end.

"Don't you think about staying Drago, its time that we go our separate ways. Iv had a lot of time to think about it, all the years we have traveled together, all the things we have seen, the people we have helped, the things we done throughout our friendship, and I know in my heart that your gonna bring that into the new world with you. I can't say it enough, they need a person like you, one who can the light through the dark, who never gives up despite the odds being against him. Your tough, your dependable, caring, and one of the funniest men I will ever know. Its time to share that with another place and time."

Drago clenched his fist tightly as he listened, a lump formed in his throat knowing that the choice was made and there was no turning back on it. Forcing a smile towards James, Drago reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box which was gift wrapped and handed it to James whom smiled and quickly ripped open the gleaming paper to reveal a golden pocket watch with a picture of them both in Alaska so many years ago standing beside a tribe of Eskimos.

"Thank you James for everything, you showed me a world beyond what I ever knew or could have known. I am here right now because you gave me the motivation I needed to go beyond my comfort zone and learn more then I could ever imagine in a big huge world. I don't know what I will face when I wake up or who I will meet in this new world, but I will never forget... my brother whom.. gave me the best gift anyone man could receive... life.. life without boundaries, without regret. It has been an honor to know you, to be your friend, an no matter how far apart we will be become, one day we will see each other again and throw back some beers, an on the day we will have so many new stories to tell each other."

The two men hugged one last time before James pulled a long box out from his coat and read down placing it inside of the black duffel near Drago's foot, zipping it back up he smiled again.

"Open when you awake Drago, let be a surprise, and know your friendship means more to me then anything in the world and I will never forget you."

Drago slowly opened his eye's as he was meant with a subtle yet bright blur in front of him among the very noticeable cold temperature within the room. It felt like someone had cranked the air conditioning up on a hot day and then broke the switch off by accident. Drago slowly went to exit the pod and his legs almost immediately failed him forcing him to crash to the ground with a heavy painful thud.

"Oh Bloody hell"

Drago swore softly to himself as he reached down and tried to move his legs some, he felt quite fatigued and his legs were painfully numb, no doubt as a result of the hibernation. Pulling his legs in the best he could he had a little mobility as he worked his legs. He suddenly felt a tingling sensation one feel when they inadvertently put their limbs to sleep. Drago hated the sensation but at the same time was relieved to know his legs were still working. Reaching up he grabbed the side of his pod and pulled himself up slowly, his legs tried to give away a couple more time but he willed himself up and stood on his legs. Soon enough the tingling sensation disappeared and Drago's strength slowly started to return to him giving him new life again. With his ability to walk restored Drago took a look around the room and beside the other pods he saw no sign of life. He was not an expert but he at least expected a welcome committee to the new world, or at the very least a hot bowl of soup.

"Yeah Drago don't count on any Campbell chicken noodle anytime soon."

Drago chuckled at his own dumb joke as he walked across the room, the floor was ice cold against his bare feet as he approached the other pods, one held a young woman and approaching the other one revealed a man. They were both still out cold and sleeping, Drago decided against waking them up and earlier the need be and would let them wake up naturally. He did not want to be on the wrong side of someone else's bed again when they awoke. Drago stretched his body from top to bottom, many of his joints cracked a popped, satisfyingly at that as he worked out all the cricks in his body. He wondered what year it was, or how long he had been asleep, or what was going on outside, these questions seemed to poor into his head as he trodded across the large room to a smaller door next to a console on the far wall. Looking at the console, he studied it finding the button that said open, with a click he pressed it, nothing happened.

"Really? Thats weird maybe its just cold or something."

Drago pressed the button again, the doors gave a small hiss and opened like maybe an inch and a half. Drago rolled his eye's as he approached the doors, putting one hand on either side of each door he grunted as he attempted to push them apart. His muscles were not fully awake yet and the task proved harder then it would be, however he was able to wrench the doors apart enough to get inside the room. This room was too empty and void of life, it was the storage space for the personal affects of everyone in the pods, the same room they placed all their items in upon arrival. Drago could really use some clothing, especially socks and shoes at that, pulled the black duffel from one of the racks he was thankful his memory was returning sharply to him otherwise he would have frozen some more in this air conditioned pit. Drago reached into the bag and pulled out a pair of timberland boots along with a pair of socks and set them down on the nearby table, taking out a pair of green cargo pants he quickly slid out of the thin clothing he had worn before going to sleep and put on the pants fastening a canvas buckle around his waste. Placing the black socks on his feet the warmth was a much appreciated change as he laced up the boots on his feet. Reaching back into the bag he pulled out a red long sleeve thermo shirt along with his favorite brown leather coat, it was in that moment he noticed the rectangular box that had been placed among his clothing.

The memory of his and James goodbye quickly hit him dead in the chest like a speeding cannonball and it hit hard. Reaching in slowly he removed the wrapped package gently and placed it on the table. Drago felt a sudden sadness as he realized that James was most likely gone now from this world. Drago reached down and gently pulled back the strips of tape on the packaging and removed the wrapping paper to reveal a carved wooden box of intricate design. Opening it revealed inside a beautiful custom made bowie knife with a matching leather sheath. Drago pulled the blade out revealing beneath it a letter along with a picture, taking out the picture it was the same picture Drago had put in the pocket watch he had given to James before he left, the picture was framed in a leather bound necklace. Picking up the folded piece of paper Drago opened it and silently read it sitting down on the table. Tears formed in the wells of his eye's as he read the words, he reached his hand up silently to wipe them away, looking down he stared at the floor and away from the letter as he sighed heavily and sadly, the reality hitting him so hard.

Folding the letter gently and neatly Drago placed it behind the picture in the leather necklace and placed it over his neck snuggly before covering it with the red long sleeved shirt. taking the bowie knife he looked at it silently noticing it was a special made survival knife with a built in compasses on the end and tough nylon rope in the hilt.

"Well I am here James and I can't say its easy so far knowing your probably gone now. My head is screaming and my chest is aching but I know that it meant the world to you that I be here, that I make a difference and I will. I will miss you terribly but I will not let myself falter, I hope you can hear me wherever you may be and know that I won't fail. We left so much unsaid and so much left to time, but I will see you again one day when my time is up. I promise you though until then I will make this new world whatever it may be the best place I can for whoever I meet."

Placing the sheath on his leg Drago placed the leather coat over his shoulders, placing the empty box back in his duffel he exited the small storage room and back in the main facility room. Upon entering the room he heard a voice saying Wakey Wakey, Drago smiled realizing he must have been in that room awhile or they just came to.

"Glad to see you all awaking, was sure hoping you wouldn't sleep for another thirty years otherwise I would be quite sad playing board games with myself. An trust me, a true debonair of independence, playing board games with yourself can be quite boring. My name is Drago its a pleasure to make your acquaintance. How is our friend here? Hopefully waking up soon, I fear that something might be amiss here, but heres to hoping I am just paranoid."

Drago smiled genuinely with optimism even though in the back of his mind he had a horrible notion that this place being so empty and cold was not just a normal occurrence, he hoped he was wrong, he wanted to be wrong.

Ciel curled up and whined quietly as cold air hit him. The boy didn't seem to want to wake up, as if 300 years wasn't enough for a good night's sleep. 'Mom, Dad?' He signed before he even opened his eyes, slowly pushing himself upright and having a look around. His parents, who had promised to be right by his side when he woke up, were nowhere to be found. All he found was a crossbow next to him, the one he'd selected to take with him into whatever world he'd wake up in.
The other thing he noticed when he sat up was that he urgently, desperately needed to pee. Not good... He thought, carefully edging his way out of the pod and landing gingerly on his feet. He swayed and nearly tipped over, as if barely able to keep his balance. Over those three centuries, his legs had grown unused to walking. He whimpered again, taking a wobbling step forward and cautiously hobbling around the room in search of his parents. Maybe they just hadn't woken up yet. he checked pod after pod for the two individuals, but found no sign of them. He was starting to panic, his light blue eyes widened and frantic as he broke into a run, noticing an open door. what he didn't notice was the man he was about to crash into.
Ciel was sent tumbling to the ground, hitting his back hard on the concrete floor. The shock caused him to leak just a little bit, gasping sharply as he sat up with a jolt as if he'd had a wire thrust up his spine. He looked up, his blue eyes carrying a glassy sheen of embarrassment. 'I'm sorry!' He signed several times, not counting on the man being able to understand. He heard more voices in the room, but couldn't really process what they were saying right at the moment.

Eve woke from what seemed like the shortest 300 years to exist. She’d been hoping that for once she’d feel rested but as it were she just felt sick. Her limbs felt numb and her gut tight, but that was just how it was going to be she figured, so she let out a long sigh and tried to enjoy the last few minutes of rest there’d be for a while. Someone shuffled along outside, then something else let out a mechanical hiss, a few minutes more passed quietly until finally a cough and more scuffling toward her pod.

The pod suddenly flipped open letting frigid air streamed in with the light. Why she’d thought taking a great big breath of fresh air was a good idea, eve had no idea, but that’s what she did. It was a stupid idea and she knew it but by the time she thought about it, it was already too late and she was already coughing and wheezing. Uhg so embarrassing she thought, this was the kind of first impression she was planning to avoid. No use crying over spilt milk, right.

She pawed at the side of the pod with one hand, while trying to stifle her coughing with the other. She needed to get to her belongings, mostly her inhaler. Scouring the bare room there seemed to really only be one option; a door blocked by a burly looking man. Her mind was made up as soon as she remembered for certain that the door was the one that led to her stuff, that’s where she was headed, no one could stop her.

With weak arms she pulled herself out of the pod and stumbled toward the door. Everything seemed harder and colder and as she shuffled on it struck her that it was really cold, more than it really ought to be. The floor was like ice and her joints felt frozen. There’d be more time to think on that later though she figured as she approached the man.

As she passed by she patted his shoulder, she was going for an assertive kind of gesture, but really it was probably more like a reassuring pat a grandmother might give. It didn't help that she was practically coughing out her lungs. It didn’t really end up mattering all that much though, she got to the closet holding all of their belongings pretty much un-hindered.

She spotted her bag immediately amidst all the others, tucked right where she’d left it. She scrambled over, opened the littlest pouch and, finally, got her inhaler. Every breath after was like a dream, relatively speaking of course. She got out a sweater as well, and socks and hard hiking shoes, then the coat from the very bottom of her bag, she wasn’t banking on it being so cold so soon.

Clearing her throat she stood back up and peered back out of the supply room.
“I’m fine thanks.” she said coldly, “Anyway. I’m Eve, and where’s The people in charge, someone’s ganna get frostbite.” Her eyes caught on the little kid just as he barreled into Drago. She frowned in sympathy as he signed frantically and wished that she’d paid more attention when she learned it in college. "You’re fine" she said as she signed.

Drago was taken aback when everyone just started popping up like kernels in a popcorn bag, it seemed there were more people in here then he had originally thought, maybe his mind was still a bit fogged from sleeping or maybe he was just getting old. Not many men in the world had the distinction of being over three hundred years old... what the hell was he even thinking? There is no person in the world living or dead who was ever alive long enough to make three hundred without a hibernation cocktail of vodka, horse tranquilizer and water from the fountain of youth. Drago slowly reached his hand up to feel for puncture marks in his neck, maybe they did inject him with horse tranquilizer, one hundred ways to a better way to knocking out big burly men for three hundred years, thats a book he would love to read through. Then again they probably did not have a dummies guide for it, what he knew of science would fit on the edge of a needle. Drago became slightly worried when a woman came to in her pod and immediately started coughing and choking he had intended to move forward to help her but she quickly dropped out of her pod and went towards him.

"Are you okay do you need any help?"

The woman patted him on the shoulder in a reassuring way as she made her way into the storage room and quickly rummaged around through her possessions, producing an inhaler she sucked on with a couple squirts and her breathing got easier. So she has asthma, thats why she was choking and coughing, Drago really must have brain damage not to have noticed that, he had seen enough attacks by now to realize what one looked like. It would probably good that he had wrenched those doors open earlier, he was glad he woke up before everyone else, Drago turned when the woman change into something more warm, about the time she was coming out a young boy had accidentally ran into Drago and rebounded off him like a ball on a wall and struck the ground. The boy instantly became frightened moving his hands in similar signs different times towards Drago whom cocked his head looking at him curiously trying to figure out what he was doing. When the woman reappeared she spoke a bit coldly saying she was fine, seeing the young man she moved her hands making different signs towards the boy. Drago finally understood, it was sign language, it had thrown him off having not seen it for many a year.

Drago turned with a smile on his face as he looked towards the boy and made a couple signs towards him, his sign language was rather weak at best, he was not exactly Mr. Bilingual by any means so instead of signing that the boy did not have to worry he bent down and effortlessly lifted him from the ground and set him down on his feet hoping he might be able to read lips. Brushing him off gently with a large hand he bent down to face level with a don't worry look.

"Your just fine young man, they really should warn people about watching out for mountain men, we do tend to take up a lot of space and we are always knocking people over by accident. My sign language is rather novice at best, forgive me I have spent too much time before in the woods with a stick, does not leave much room for learning intelligent things."

Drago gave the boys shoulder a firm yet gentle squeeze of reassurance before standing up and looking at the woman whom was known as Eve.

"My name is Drago its a pleasure to meet you Eve, you seem to know some sign language could you perhaps ask him what his name is, knowing my skills in the sign art I would probably read it off as pizza or something."

Drago ignored the part about the people in charge, mostly because Drago did not want to worry the young boy unsure if he had trouble speaking and could hear or was deaf or whatever problem he may have had. The feeling that they were alone was still strong in Drago's gut, nothing else made since otherwise that no one was here by now to greet them. An this damn arctic chill just didn't make sense either, air conditioning only went so cold, and this place was hellish and warm when they went to sleep so it would be obvious to think it would be the same waking up but it felt as cold as the time he was staying in an igloo in alaska and if it was cold like this in here then what was it like outside of this room or outside all together?

Ciel still seemed a bit unsteady on his feet, swaying sharply to the left as Drago put him down and stumbling, only just managing to regain his footing. He kept his face straight though, not wanting to seem like the startled child he was. He probably shouldn't have been stood up so quickly, given the condition his poor bladder was in. He winced heavily, shifting his weight from foot to foot and trying not to pee himself on the spot. He wouldn't let himself do that, even if it meant permanent organ damage. It probably wouldn't get to that point, but still.
He then raised a hand to his chin thoughtfully, looking up at the two of them as they tried to figure out how best to communicate with him. They were both significantly older than him, the man being perhaps nearly middle aged and the woman in her twenties somewhere. He was starting to feel like he might be the youngest person who was hibernated. That would be highly embarrassing, from his standpoint.

"I can hear you, it's fine." He signed slowly, realizing that the woman who had approached them might not be entirely fluent. "I'm not deaf. I just can't talk." He forced an apologetic sort of smile. He rarely smiled genuinely, but his fake smiles were rather authentic looking. "You haven't seen my parents, have you? My dad is the governor, you probably know him..."

With not much response from any of his colleges, and the fact that they didN't even notice him, Jay decided to take matters into his own hand. The sweat he broke whilst in the hybernation already started freezing into small ice crystals on his skin, making moving painful. His breath formed small clouds that quickly disappeared. Tho only lightly, but his vision darkened, and his fingers started to go numb. Most of his muscles started to gently twitch. These were all sign of impending hypothermia. He scanned the room with his eyes, and found a terminal that seemed to be in working order. Under the flickering lights he slowly made his way to the terminal, and breatehd on his fingers to warm them up. As if they were made of stone, tehy slowly moved, and unfolded as they touched the screen. The terminal came to life, and the warm glow filled Jay's eyes. He rested his ahnd ont eh touchscreen for some time, and let it be warmed up by the tiny lights inside.

As soon as he could feel his fingers again, he started to type in commands. It was a very basic system, with no real visoual interface to use. Only commands and datas. He searched for the room info. >-23 Celsius degrees. Main power offline. Secondary generator online and powering sections A to F. Section A to C are unavaible. D-E are nominal. Section F status is unavaible.< Minus 23 Celsius was way too cold. He could feel his body getting really cold already, and his priority was bringing power back to their section. With a few touches of the screen he rerouted the excess pwoer to their floor. Suddenly the lights started fizzing and then shined up even brighter than before, Illuminating the room quite clearly. The vents started humming gently as heat flowed in to warm up the air in the room. Small puddles staretd to appear below him as the ice melted. He looked at the back of the room, where the rest of teh group was. "Power is back on. Search for exit."

“Oh boy, I wouldn’t really say I know sign language, uh” Eve said, trailing off at the end as the boy started signing again. “Oh, he can hear us,” she translated, “he san’t uhm what’s that, wait oh he’s mute, duhh. okay Annnd have I seen his parents, his dad. Uhm someone I know or...whoa kiddo I don’t actually know that much sign language. Um…”
She thought for a moment how to break it to the kid that his parents were dead. Then procrastinated as long as she could looking back around the room.

The other guy was piddling with the controls otherwise everything was rather bland.

“Well…” she mumbled to herself as she turned back to the kid. “Are you okay?” she asked, noticing his restlessness. She didn’t really interact with kids a whole lot but he seemed extra jittery.

Before she could get an answer a low humming began and the lights and heating came back on. Warm air fell into the room like liquid fogging up all the glass on the pods causing every surface to start sweating. Her focus snapped over to the guy with glasses, who’d been messing with the controls before, his short command not really sitting well with her.
“That’s a nice thought but if it’s negative what sixty in here don’t you think maybe we ought to see about finding some gear or something before we go and snoop around topside.”

Drago listened silently as Eve tried to understand what the young boy was signing, he got the general gist when he mentioned he was a mute but he could hear them talking. Drago nodded to himself as if understanding something and set his black duffel on the ground and unzipped one of the front pockets, reaching inside he yanked out a small notepad and a cheap pen. Scribbling on the piece of paper he got the pen working and passed it on to the boy.

"I think that should help, I hope in time I will be able to pick back up on sign language. For now though you can at least talk to us without having to worry."

Drago smiled at the young boy as he looked up, there was an electrical noise from within the room, the lights suddenly came to life and he could smell the heat that was beginning to pump into the room. At least they wouldn't freeze or get hypothermia while they figured out what to do next. The lack of personnel still bothered Drago quite a bit, he did not understand why there was no one else to greet them, especially given the importance they posed in the first place. When the man whom was able to reconnect the power spoke of finding an exit Drago was not too keen on the idea at that point. Walking over to the man near the console Drago looked at the door in front of them, it seemed the most logical way out of the room.

"Eve is right we should gather some gear, even with the heat off there is no reason why this room would get so cold unless there was a reason beyond here. I will go take a look around, see if I can find somebody who can tell us what is going on. My name is Drago by the way apologies for not introducing myself before, I guess awakening hours were between five and six, threw me off."

Drago approached the door on the wall, there was a panel next to it similar to the one that controlled the storage room on the other side, clicking the door release there was a hiss before the door slid aside opening half way. Drago was hit with a rather chilly frost that chilled him down the spine. The air was deep chilled as he breathed it in, it made him cough hard, pulling his arm up he covered his mouth and breathed into his arm instead to counteract the chill and walked into the hall. Drago scanned the hallway left and right, it was void of life and even more so it was frosted over with a thin coating of sparkling frozen snow, this cold was not normal, not at all. It was almost like being back in Alaska. Making his way silently down the hall Drago came to a small desk, reaching forward he grabbed at a walkie talkie on the desk, it was completely frozen to the surface however making him unable to remove it.

"Hello!"

Drago yelled loudly, his voice echoed around the hallway and disappeared receiving no response. Drago grabbed his sides as the chill began to get to him a little. It was hellishly cold, turning he made his way back to the room with the others and walked back in letting himself warm up in the heat.

"I don't see anyone out there, and the place is frozen like a freezer, everyone should make sure to be dressed warmly before we get moving. Is there any possible way to like get a schematic or something of this place, a map maybe, I remember faintly my trip down here in the elevator."

Drago looked at the one who turned the power back on, he seemed rather tech savvy or at least had an understanding of machines seeming he brought the power back on.

Jay just made a slightly annoyed face when the woman didn't get him. But when the big guy didn't understand what he was trying to mean, he got fed up. The only people person in the room couldn't catch his drift, then who could. With an empathic look at the silent boy, he took a quick glance at the terminal. Things seemed nominal. But the other parts of the section didn't heat up properly. It seemed however that it was a localized problem only. Other sections showed radical signs of heating up. Some of these signs were leakes of water, and broken pipes. Whatever the reason was behind this frostbite down here, the place was falling apart, and soon freezing woN't be tehir biggest problem. But it also worried him why the hallways didn't heat up. If someone tried to sabotage them, why didn't they cut off habitat life support? Or did they want them frozen? He toom his eyes off the screen and stopped his train of thoughts to look at the big guy exit the room via the door. He was standing close by, and Jay got hit by the cold too, but the vent next to him made the cold seem like an illusion.

The frozen crystal covered walls of teh hallway were almost like something out of a dream, glimmering in the lights. But it reminded him more of a nightmare. If they don't get supplies and good clothes soon, they will freeze or suffocate really soon. He started to think. As Draco puleld back from the door to explain what he was thinking, Jay searched through the map. It seemed like one of those stations that carried supplies for them were jsut down the hallway, a good 100 meters at best. No lifesigns on the floor either. At least he doesn't have to worry about the staff coming back as zombies. They could get to the room, and take an elevator with the supplies to the surface. it didn't look like it was irradiated. Then they could hightail it to somewhere safe. But for that he also needed up to date info, which he couldn't get from this terminal. So they need to go to the control room, which is a floor below. But that would risk them losing time!

He was puleld out of his brainstorm by Draco looknig at him with a look of a thousand questions and expectations. He looked at him, and the other two who were staring at him. He pushed his glasses which slid down on his nose in the time beingback to their palce, and after assessing the situation looked at the others. "Staffs dead. Supply room down the hallway. Be ready." Without further hesitaion he turned his attention back to the screen. He was searching for something, which he found on the side of the pillar holding up the terminal. A small button that he pressed. With a hiss, the terminal was released from it's hold, momentarily gonig black. Soon enough the transparent glass started to glwo again, this time revealing a more sophisticated OS to Jay. He quickly searched for teh floor plan, and showed it to the others. "Now follow." He took a deep breath of the warm air, and exited through the door into the chilling hallways, headed towards their best bet at surviving.

Ciel looked rather frustrated when his query about his parents wasn't answered. He took the pen and notepad that Drago had handed him, neatly writing in large letters "My parents are down here. I'm not going anywhere until they're found." He tapped the bearded man on the shoulder, thrusting the notepad in his face forcefully. Ciel's eyes carried a cold glare, but the rest of his face was straight and unemotional.

Ciel really, really hoped the supply room the other guy had mentioned had a bathroom. He didn't know how long he'd been asleep, but he decided that if he ever hibernated again he wouldn't drink any water for a whole day beforehand. He wondered if he was the only one who hadn't been given the memo, because everyone else seemed mostly fine. He shifted uncomfortably, his hands clenching and unclenching.

He shivered. The cold had been slightly alleviated by the heat, but it was still noticeably chilly in the room. At first he thought it was just really cold in this room, but now it was becoming increasingly clear that this was likely a widespread weather condition. If that was how cold it was inside, what the hell was it like out there? Ciel hated winter either way. It was always his least favorite season, aside from spring. Ciel only really hated spring because he had allergies, but he had a feeling he was going to long desperately for that season by the time they got out there.

Drago looked at the map of the facility silently, he memorized the layout letting his eye's trace around the blueprint, maps were after all a lot easier for him to remember when it came to area's such as this. Feeling the tap on his shoulder Drago turned to see the younger boy behind him, the notepad he had given him was thrust into his face, reading the neat letters on the paper he looked at the boy, his eye's were cold but he remained emotionless none the same. So he was thinking that his parents were down here as well. Frowning Drago scratched his beard quietly, if that was the case then the question was why they did not place the boy with his parents in the same room, it would stand to reason that they would keep family together if nothing else. That thought however was outweighed by the impending thought of doom, Drago was pretty sure by now that no one else in the facility was even alive right now, what were the chances that others were not awake by now if there was really others down here, people would be popping up all over the place. No.. a complete idiot would realize at this point that something had gone terribly wrong down here, an that was because of something that happened top side. Drago looked at the kid silently thinking about if he possibly knew that his parents might not be here and if they were, they might be dead.

"I will go look into the other.. rooms on the map. I will see if I can't find anyone. You both should follow him to the supply room and collect what you can I have a feeling we are going to need it. If you have any clothing you brought with, you should put it on, the cold chill is not just for show."

Drago intended to say more to the kid but truth was he did not want to cross that road if he did not have to, there was little point in telling him his parents were dead if they might be down here alive still. Before leaving the room Drago reached down and unzipped the bag on his side, removing one of the various black shirts, he took the knife from its sheath and quickly cut the shirt up into four large pieces. Replacing the knife in the sheath he applied one of them to his face, covering his mouth he tied the back of it around his neck and secured it to keep himself from breathing too much of the chilly air within the hallway.

"Here you should wear this kid, tie it around your mouth and nose, its primitive but it will help you to not breath in a lot of cold air. These temperatures can cause problems with the lungs, without going into too much detail this chill can freeze particles in the lungs and make prolonged exposure dangerous. You too Eve, that last thing I think we need is someone getting extremely ill, this one is for the other man."

Drago zipped the bag back up setting down the makeshift masks and quickly exited into the hallway, recalling the routes and rooms on the map he went in the opposite direction of the other man. He would catch up later, for now his own curiosity coupled with the kids request was more pressing to him. As Drago walked the dead hallway he wondered what had caused this kind of devastation to an underground facility, he was not an idiot he had already figured out why it was so cold, it didn't take rocket science to know this was being caused by an external factor even though he would rather play the ignorant fool for optimism's sake. This facility was suppose to be cut off from the outside world and secluded keeping it safe but somehow through some measures the cold chill somehow entered the facility and threw it into disarray which also meant that this place was probably unstable. Cold temperatures and ice did not go well in a facility like this, the deep freezing would almost certainly weaken the entire area, would destroy anything man made as time went on. "Staffs dead." The words played into Drago's mind, that man seemed so cold and oblivious, how he so easily spoke of death without a thought to anyone else in the room. He didn't seem to care that anyone else might possibly still be alive in the facility, even he could not know if that was entirely accurate or not. Didn't matter... didn't matter, let him do what he wanted and think what he wanted.

Drago's eyes surveyed the current area and another door was now in sight, walking up to it he silently walked up to the keypad and clicked the release button, the door opened with a hiss, hit with some heated air Drago walked into the room pulling down the black makeshift mask. The room like theirs had pods in it, there was approx. about four pods in the room, Drago walked up to one of the pods and looked inside. There was a man with his eye's closed in it, reaching forward Drago put his hand on the mans neck, there was no heartbeat as there was no breath. The skin was cold and clammy, it had a tinge of purple to it, with two fingers Drago opened the mans eye, the pupil was white and unresponsive, he had been dead for a time. Drago approached each pod respectively and the result was always the same, everyone was dead, how was this possible? Why were these people dead yet Drago and his small group were still alive? None of this made any damn sense, none of it yet here he was, here they were in a frozen hell. Drago sighed knowing there was nothing to be done, this had not just occurred, they had been dead for a long while, preserved by the cold chill, he could only hope that none of these people were the parents to the young boy, and even if they were not that meant equally his parents were not here and that meant they were dead long before today.

Drago approached the storage room on the other side of the room, it was identical layout to their room, releasing the door he walked into the small area and saw the personal affects of the others. Pulling the bags off the shelves there was no point in not taking what was useful, they were dead and the realization that he would find the same in any other room had become a very real reality to him now. Most of the belongings were potentially useless beside clothing and personal keepsakes, Drago sifted the items and took the ones most useful to himself, a couple heavy shirts, some notebooks and a few pens, some metal items, fabrics which could be made into rope and other necessities if need be. Reaching into the bag Drago removed a pair of goggles one might wear if they went skiing. Drago silently placed them over his head, the fit was snug enough, one size fits all he guessed. Removing a photograph from one of the bags Drago looked at it, it was a nice picture of a family, a man a woman and two children in a large open area with an RV a lake in the background. Putting his hand to his chest Drago felt where the picture was of him and James, it just didn't make any sense why they lived and these people just.. died. Drago would have thought more on the subject but the sudden creaking made him look up, Drago quickly grabbed his bag and exited the room just before the ceiling busted in releasing a huge whiff of extremely cold air.

They had to get the hell out of here, that damn well proved the facility was falling apart, thank god that creaking sounded like cracking ice with too much weight on it or he would have been crushed. Crossing the room Drago exited it pulled the goggles over his eye's and the makeshift mask back over his mouth and nose. Sighing Drago pushed the button to close and seal the door, he only hoped that they had found some measure of peace. Looking down the rest of the hallway Drago shook his head knowing it was useless to look for life, it was too late.

Ciel walked back to his pod, looking through the clothes he'd brought with him. He selected a black winter coat and some red gloves, sighing as he realized he didn't have any hats. He supposed he'd just have to do without ears after they fell off from frostbite. He already knew sign language, would it be that different being deaf?
He froze up for a minute, letting out a sharp squeak as he forced his legs together, bouncing up and down slightly. This was not good. Not good at all. He gave himself approximately ten or so minutes left before he couldn't hold it anymore.
He walked back to the group, following them as they walked into the next room. Drago walked up to one of the people, prying the body's eye open and quickly discovering it was dead. Ciel recoiled in disgust, his face showing a flash of genuine emotion before he froze up again, searching around the room full of corpses. No sign of his parents. He didn't know whether that was good of bad. "There has to be another room. They can't all be dead." He wrote down, showing the notepad to Drago, and the other two people.

Disgust. Apathy. These words best describe Jay's feelings as he looked at the dead people in a room not so far from theirs. Great minds of their time, those chosen to make our Earth prosper again after the rest was destroyed. But he felt emotionless looking at the carcasses. They were nothing more than a pile of flesh and bones without their neurouns active anymore. Nothing more than a can of bean soup that was in the freezer for a long time. He looked away without taking too much time to think about tehir fate. He silently drew a cross in the air and then moved on towards the storeroom. The black bandana Draco amde for them was really useful. Yet the fact he was preparing for a more radioactive and hot doomsday took its toll. His only clothes were his shirt and jeans. Not suitable for the winter enviroment of this ex-facility now redesigned to be a freezer.

Large stalagtites hung from the ceiling, showing signs of rock erosion that happened in the 300 years they were in incubation. Some natural process must have accelerated their growth to reach this lenghts, even outgrowing the icycles. He tried not think about what material would cause such effects. Instead, he turned his attention back to the terminal he held in his hand. 30 meters more and they will reach the room. hopefully untouched and filled with supplies. Warm clothes and survival gear, along with food and other necessities. And hopefully a terminal he could use to gather intel. If not, then he may have to cut his adventure short. but for now, the focus was on the things they could find, not about what they couldn't.

And just before the supply room came into sight, a new barrier arose. Literally. Around the corner, where the supply room was supposed to be, a massive wall of ice stood, growing by the second. Maybe a ruptured water pipe? Or even the coolant froze in this enviroment? Nevertheless, the weird barricade seemed to have been created recently, and some kind of a liquid entered veins under the crust of teh ice, fueling its growth. On the other side the hallway looked empty, and he could barely make out the sign marking the supply room. He sighed under the mask, thinking that their life will be cut short here. Wellp, no way around either way. The big man went towards a dead end, so they are cut off here. Maybe the big guy could do something, but this ice was too strong to break by smashing into it. Just to make sure he was right, jay knocked on the ice. The silent thuds confirmed his fears. He turned back to the other two following him and shrug. "Whadday beckon?"

Ciel's shoulders slumped as he let out a sigh. His sigh was audible, indicating that his mutism was from a cause other than a defect in his vocal cords. A brain dysfunction, perhaps, or even selective mutism. Either way, even his rich parents didn't really know.
Speaking of Ciel's parents, he was still quite intent on finding them. Maybe there was another room behind that wall of ice. Maybe his parents were trapped in there, or still asleep...
Ciel forced himself not to panic, trying to think of something else. But between that and his urgent need to pee, there wasn't much to think about.
"Give me the map. There has to be another way around." He wrote, reaching up to show Drago and the other two.
