They figured they had better odds of high-tailing it through Austria than avoiding the invasion forces all the way up to Latvia. I suppose they were mistaken. Sorry for the confusion. @Lady Selune Oh! I almost forgot something about his power. He can manipulate organic surfaces, it just takes an hour and usually kills whatever he's manipulating. Is that alright? (this is because cells are different than regular matter bc they're alive)

@Lady Selune An idea just popped into my mind suddenly. As Jean is a Frenchman, he possibly could pose as a Vichy French, in a similar way as Michael Fassbender's character tried to pose as a German in the Inglorious Basterds. If we are going to Paris, that could be used as a plot point.
