Well that depends.

If you mean took a role play to its conclusion, then I have done that many times.

But what usually ends up happening is they then beg you to make a sequel, and I've never seen one of those end. That hurts my many times count a bit.

@BrokenPromise Would you happen to have the link of one of your finished RPs? I'm curious to see how an RP ends.

@Hostile I could link you, but it's a private forum. Registration is closed, and you need to be registered to look at the original RPs. If you just want to look at the final post or something like that, I could re-post one here or send you a PM. But it would be difficult to show you the entire RP.

@BrokenPromise There's no need for that, really. But if you want to, you could perhaps send me the ending post.

The general consensus seems to be that these things can manage in other places. My question is; why? What's the deal? We are, after all, on a site devoted specifically to roleplaying, no?

@Lucian I can't speak to anyone else's experience but most other sites I have been to are persistent worlds. In a persistent world there is a lot more motivation to post because your character has a chance, however small, of making some change in the world (or preventing a change you do not like). From what I have seen that throws fuel on the fire of motivation.

BTW that is an awesome AV and signature.

Most sites I've used other than RPG weren't devoted to roleplaying, but had roleplaying side-forums, and things seemed to go fine there, persistent universe or no. Also there are so many variations of roleplays available here that you'd think [i[someone[/i] would have found some success here and there.

Also thanks. Always good to see some Adrian appreciation (Ozymandias was right!)

I have. On here, even.

However they were 1x1 RPs that my partner already had a set storyline for - all fairly linear. I think that's the reason that partner and I had multiple RPs reach a conclusion. He had a start and an end already in mind - I just provided subplots and drama for the middle. xD

This community definitely has commitment issues. And I think the concept which people don't understand is that dedication to roleplay isn't a feeling; it's a choice. If you give up on a roleplay from the moment your excitement to try something new has begun to wane, then you're never going to see a story through to the end, ever. You have to be committed even when you're not extremely enthused about posting. You have to post even when you don't feel like it, and there will be times where an RP is slower, or when another player is trying your patience, or it just feels more like a job than a hobby in general.

People here by and large are just too damn capricious to stick with an RP when the initial "honeymoon phase" has worn off on a new setting/plot/premise. They run on the fumes of infatuation, and then they quit once the RP turns out to be less than perfect.

It's very frustrating that I grow more jaded by the day because with the exception of a few 1x1s, the RPs here have always died before my eagerness to post in them has died. And I'm afraid to try creating new threads because my effort will just be wasted on whimsical assholes who cannot stay dedicated; so besides ruining RPs which already exist, I can attest from direct experience that these people are ruining future RP prospects, too! They're basically spoiling my hobby and I regularly consider moving to another site in the hopes of finding a more mature community than this. If they're all like this, though, then it's futile, and I'd may as well take up knitting or something.

A few. This site, had one complete, though it came across as slightly forced...

These days, partially for the subject of the thread and partially just because I'm busy, I do very little RP at all.

The sad truth is that most people who join an RP are unaware of the commitment involved, or expect daily posts to interact with. I have the most luck trying to rally together people who I'm on the same wave length with and RP with the lot of them. That's not to say some randoms aren't dedicated, but you need to plan on at least a few of them dropping out or getting busy. I actually think the commitment problem is compounded in this type of environment because a new RP starts up every ten minutes.

No, I have never completed a roleplay. I have, however, been in one roleplay that continued for years and years. It was a Warrior Cats roleplay, but the roleplay went on for several generations. Before the site went up in flames.

I think that we could have more committed users if our site is updating and hire more staff members. Our site hasn't seen anything new at all and it's getting boring. However, I do think that the commitment issues are all over different roleplaying (but this site has it worse than the others).

I have never completed a roleplay during my time on this site; however, I did completed one off site a long time ago.

I've said this in a few other topics, but the commitment problem that @BrokenPromise mentioned is one of several reasons why I also tend to only write with those on a similar wavelength to me. I've noted several times that one of the first things I look for when choosing people who I'll allow into my role-plays is their commitment level; in fact, those who've got a reputation of being flaky will usually be denied from my role-plays outright unless they've proven that they've gotten over that habit.

I tend to seek out a dedicated group of players, and I've deliberately made my OOC for the role-play I'm running on this site complex and extensive in order to weed out people who might be lazy (though due to how in-depth I usually am, I'd have very detailed OOCs even if there wasn't that motivation -- those who are looking for something simplistic or shallow should look elsewhere).

With that being said, I've completed several role-plays in the past, all of which were run by me and were using my main story project's setting. They were completed in the sense that each of them were independent stories or arcs. Given the complexity and size of my main project, it'd be impossible to truly 'finish' a role-play built around that project because there's always the option for new plots (the 'sequel' argument that Broken mentioned), which is what each of the successive role-plays often were. I haven't seen a role-play I didn't run finish to date, but I also usually don't get involved in role-plays unless I'm running them as a general rule.

As for this site itself, I guess time will tell what happens with my current role-play I'm running, but I'm definitely in it for the long run.
