"Oh come on ya stupid thing! I just replaced yer transmission last week!" Nick groaned, pounding a fist on the raised hood of his car. Just his luck that today was a late Friday night so no one else was out driving this stretch of road; nor did he have a cellphone to call for a tow...not that he would ever have the cash upfront for that kind of thing. Sighing, he looked around the moonlit stretch of highway where this broken-down bucket-of-bolts had stranded him, surveying the thick sylvan flora on either side of the road.

His eyes lit on a set of lights set deep in the forest on the side closest to him. Straining his peepers to their limit, there seemed to be a tiny game trail barely wide enough for one person leading off the highway in that direction. "Well," Nick said aloud to himself. "If I'm gonna die, it might as well be at a witch's house made outta candy." His Southern drawl rolled off into empty air, a reminder that the Hansel and Gretel reference fell on, not deaf ears, but none at all.

Nick Fletcher closed his car hood with a slam, snatched his keys out of the ignition, closed and locked the car's entry points, and stepped down the path. As soon as he stepped off the highway, a chill crept up his spine and things in his peripheral vision and behind him seemed much darker than before. By contrast, not five steps down the tiny path, he could see a white, antebellum mansion before him rising high in the night seemingly closer than it ought to be for only eight paces from the highway now.

Before he quite realized it, he was standing before an elaborately carved and gilded doorknocker depicting a small swan in profile. It's neck arching gracefully around to be the handle, looking a bit to Nick like a horseshoe. Birdshoe? The errant thought made him chuckle as he reached for the knocker, but to his surprise, found the door swinging open of its own accord. "Uhh hello?" he drawled out, peeking around at the sides of the entryway. Nick waited a few seconds for someone to pop out from behind the door and announce themselves, but no one came.

Cautiously, he wiped the dirt and debris from his boots off on the rough mat outside, then stepped over the threshold, peering behind the door as he did so to discover that no one was indeed there. "Whoever y'are, this is all real funny!" he exclaimed, trying to keep his tone light. "Y'see, mah car broke down over on the road. Jus' wonderin' if ye gotta phone I could use t'call fer a tow?" But his voice was met only with silence. Being a man that was usually emboldened by silence, at least a woman's silence, Nick took it upon himself to walk further into the home.

Past the entryway stood a rather small door right in front of him, making the room he stood in a sort of antechamber to a main hall. None of this mattered to Nick, however, as he brazenly stepped through said door, again checking behind the door for someone lurking. He found himself in a large room with two spiral staircases going up on either side of him. In front of him, four waist-high pillars sat, each bearing a book atop them.

When Nick heard a female voice seemingly out of nowhere, he nearly jumped out of his skin about two inches off the floor. "Yo, who is that? Come out where I can see ya!" he demanded. But no response was forthcoming after a minute or so of waiting. The calm lady's voice had said to choose. Nick didn't really know or care what type of game he'd gotten himself into, but it seemed best to play along if it would get him answers. So he stepped up to the first pillar on the left, waved his hand under the floating book that seemed to change in shape, pattern, and color as he looked at it. A quality that the other books strangely did not seem to possess. Bringing his other hand to bear, he took the strange changeable book in both hands and lifted it off the pedestal. "Alright lady, what now huh? I s'pose you want me to take off mah clothes and go through some voodoo magic ritual, ain't that right?"

There was no answer to Nick's question, for a few moments no movement in the room around him as the quietness itself was once again the answer itself to his question. It was then as if a delayed reaction the pilar the book in his hand begain to crack and crumble into a thousand tiny pieces. The doors left open from which Nick had entered the large room slammed shut. The three other books fell from the air onto the pilars, and if they were bricks the pilars broke into millions of pieces. The books in the shelves around the room lurched forward falling in large piles into the floor. It was as if the room was tearing itself apart, and in the middle of it all stood Nick.

As the fancy black railings fall from the staircases, a figure appeared at the balcony overlooking the now destroyed room. The figure is distorted, but it is of a woman and she lets out a scream. "What have you done?" Her voice is new, clearly not the woman who had been speaking. She does not seem to hear if Nick answers her question, no she isn't looking at him, but seems to be talking to someone else, someone who seems to be moving behind her.

The woman turns her back to Nick, a hand going to her throat before she looks to the other side of her, a hand retching out as she screams for someone else to run. As the words leave her lips she is pushed off of the balcony and sent falling towards Nick and the ground.

Does Nick try to catch the falling figure or does simply watch the figure fall?

Nick stood there aghast as the series of events unfolded before him. First the book and pillar beneath it crumbled into tiny pieces beneath his touch. Then the woman shouting, then all of a sudden, the woman was falling right in front of him. Hadn't she been across the room a moment ago? How had she gotten so close without him realizing it? This was all getting really freaky for Nick. He made as if to grab the falling woman, but his hands only briefly delayed her fall before she slipped through his clutches.

As the woman slips from Nick’s clutches and lands on the ground, her whole body seems to shatter into glass surrounding Nick. Slowly his vision starts to fade away, until he is surrounded in darkness.

As Nick opens his eyes he finds himself laying on a bed made out of wool and animal skins, he is no longer in the house he had wondered into to call for a tow. Instead he finds himself in a small hut, made of lumber and stone bricks, the roof is straw and perhaps hay? It is hard to say without looking at in it more closely. The only light in the hut is the dim barely morning light shining through the small window. The only other possible source of light is the unlit candles that feel the room, on wore looking tables and candle sconces that hang on the walls. Other than the basic furniture in the small hut, the most noticeable thing within its walls is the book laying on the floor bedside the bed. The same book he had taken from the house and held close to him before.

Does Nick look at the book?

There is enough time for Nick to look around the small hut, and even out of the small windows if he wants. However, soon there is a rushed and frantic knocking on the door of the hut. When he opens the door, he comes face to face with a thin black haired woman. Her hair is messy with small twigs and the white dress she wears has what very clearly are dried blood stains down the side as well as smeared bloody hand prints at the bottom. “Please sir, they are coming, you must hide me.” She begs, her voice trembling slightly, her eyes turning to look behind her at the woods. In the distance the sound of horses and shouting can be heard.

Nick does not know why this woman is being hunted he can either:
Turn the strange woman away, not knowing what will happen to her.
Let the stranger in, chancing the consequences of being caught with her.
Yell for the guards in the woods. After all where did the blood come from?

Nick felt the utterly strange sensation of weightlessness as the world he knew dropped away to blackness. All of a sudden, he found himself in a small hut. To be more precise, the bed he was on was soft but quite distinctly scratchy wool when he patted its comforter with his hands. "Where am Ah?" he twanged, looking around and patting himself and surrounding objects. "Is this real right now?" As if in answer to his question, a frantic knocking started at the only door of the hut. Nick made to roll out of bed, but in the process he knocked a sizeable book off of the nightstand next to the bed. Bending over to pick it up, he recognized it immediately as the one he grabbed off the pillar.

Deciding to wait on opening the book, he tucked it under his left arm and strode over to the door. Opening it, he beheld a severely bedraggled young woman. "Well howdy do, maybe you can give me some answers here, pretty lady! Ah am mighty confused right about now. How 'bout ye come in and tell me who's chasin' ya, huh?" He opened the door as wide as it would go, a ninety degree angle, and beckoned with his right hand. He bowed low gallantly as she crossed the threshold. Nice! Black lace! Sexy! the darker part of his mind whispered as his eyes spied her smallclothes underneath the white dress. He also spied some bloodstains all over said dress, but that small detail was lost on him, macho as he was.

Completing the bow in one smooth motion, knowing from experience that ladies didn't typically mind being bowed to by a gentleman, Nick Fletcher went over and sat on the edge of the bed, seemingly the only seat in the room save for a chair pushed into a tiny desk at the back of the hut. "Maybe you c'n start by tellin' me what this here book is? I grabbed it off a pillar and then Ah (I) woke up here." He looked around the hut once more, eyes resting on the door he had just closed on his way across the room. "And uhh....Ah'm still tryin' to figger out where "here" is. "
