@TwelveOf8Is this really all coming from the spam thread? i've never actually looked there but I always assumed it was a lighthearted place where everyone made jokes and thread games. I cant see why anyone would argue over non serious topics>

@GaratteeWell, not the overbearing political diatribe. But perhaps the mixing of the irreverence from the spam thread coupled with a serious topic leaves people feeling particularly butt hurt.

TL:DR there's a time and place for everything.

It's kinda a shame because I would like to discuss politics from time to time. I clicked this thread because of Le Pen/Macron and the French elections but looking for a real discussion doesn't seem practical considering the thread so far.

We could always make a thread for actually discussing politics (and maybe current events since those interest me)?

@Dynamo Frokane Really? Interesting. I admit I'm surprised, I didn't think you were a Le Pen fan. Can I ask why you support her over Macron?

@Kratesis Why are you surprised?

I think that france needs to be tougher on immigration, and Marcon comes off as a bit of a Sanders-Lite.

@Dynamo Frokane The anti-libertarian memes. It has been a while since I ran into much anti-libertarianism, way back on TVTropes waaaay back eight or nine years ago or so. It was usually linked with a hatred for Kant, love for Jeremy Bentham and a lean toward the political left.

Ah okay. Hrm. Never heard that before. I had the impression that he was the centrist candidate but I admit I don't know a lot about him.

@Kratesis Marine Le Pen isnt a Libertarian though?
Shes right wing when it comes to immigration but shes essentially left of center on almost everything else including economics.

I dislike libertarian-ism more for the culture it has created. I mean sure its a silly meme ideology, but then so is communism. But largely speaking, non violent communists tend to keep to themselves. Libertarians generally tend to think their simplistic world view makes them more intelligent and individualistic then their peers which makes them come off as incredibly smug. A lot of them are also quite inconsistent with their views on state intervention but that's another kettle of fish.

@Dynamo Frokane Yeah that's true.

Well you aren't wrong. The internet is filled with libertarians who just discovered Ayn Rand and grew their first neckbeard lol. They are typically insufferable. Then there is the business class of libertarian which is more of a heroic identity. I have a fondness for the libertarians intellectual wing myself. I enjoy logical rigor and I usually only get that from libertarians and marxists. I think I missed the meme stuff? I wasn't even aware there were libertarian and communist memes before I started hanging out on the Guild again. It's really new to me.

What is the business class of libertarian-ism? I imagine it has something to do with low taxes/corporations? Its not a term I've heard before.

@Dynamo Frokane There is a class of entrepreneurs, businessmen and other such corporate types who are into Ayn Rand. It does have to do with low taxes of course but it also gives them a heroic identity. I don't know if you have read Atlas Shrugged or any of Ayn Rand's other novels but they offer the idea of the creator as a heroic individualist, stoically bearing the weight of those jealous of their success and others who want to use the power of government (and social ties) to leach off their wealth. While bearing these burdens the heroic creator forges ahead with a vision only they can see until their vision is made real by their long and difficult struggle.

There is a lot more too it but that's the gist of things.

@Vilageidiotx From what I've read of Ayn Rand she envisioned the heroic protagonist as the opposite of the divinely empowered monarch.

What I mean is the idea functions as an ideological cover for their behavior. A King isn't just some brute who has monopolized force to impose his will, he is the elect of God himself, divinely ordained to rule. A cutthroat businessman isn't just a psychopathic scam-artist, he is an intrepid individualist not held back by backwards collectivist concepts of morality. Nobody wants to think that their privilege is arbitrary, so they create an idea to tell them that they are exactly where they are supposed to be.

@Dynamo Frokane I think it's fascinating. During the election I followed The_Donald fairly closely and /pol/ and Breitbart somewhat less closely. Though I disagree with him on maybe half of what he says I became a big fan of Milo as well. I suppose I became a fan of Milo the person but I wasn't really converted to his point of view (I'm not convinced he's really a believer in half the stuff he says either).

Every action produces an equal and opposite reaction and SJW-ism eventually produced its anti-thesis in the alt-right. Currently the alt-right's cultural product is vibrant and their impact on the pre-collage crowd is much larger than I think is generally recognized. The right wing is cool again and the far right wing is the cultural zeitgeist for a considerable number of white teenagers.
