P R E M I S E
Valour & Vale takes place in a time following The Great War, a fierce campaign between nations that came to its final conclusion eighty years prior to the beginning of RWBY. It was during this delicate time that the four kingdoms gathered together on the island of Vytal, a neutral space for where they could form a treaty and plan the future of Remnant. Within this treaty it was discussed that each of the four kingdoms shall build their own Huntsman Academy with the proposed Beacon Academy in Vale, Shade Academy in Vacuo, Haven Academy in Mistral, and Atlas Academy in Mantle.

Along with teaching and training some of the greatest of warriors each academy would home to one of the four gifts to mankind, four relics that represent a physical form of Knowledge, Creation, Destruction, and Choice. As the time, teaching, and construction passed, each day inched closer to when these powerful artifacts would inevitably be relocated from the island of Vytal to their newly built homes within the kingdom academies. It was then that the harrowing discovery was made. Contact with the island—the island that held the four relics that could change the fate of the world—had suddenly and unexpectedly ceased.

Time was of the utmost importance and the King of Vale demanded that each Academy send out their most skilled Hunters and Huntresses to the island of Vytal, a tall order considering that no student had yet to fully graduate from their still young academies. It would take a miracle for this expedition to be completed, but sometimes a little faith is all you really need.

The four kingdoms signed an important piece of legislation that would grant each nation their own territory, that they would vigorously abolish the slavery within their lands, and that each kingdom would be allowed to rebuild and restructure their own governments to that of their personal liking. While it was a step forward for the people of Remnant it did not mean that all the problems, the disagreements, and the conflict would wash away so easily. The strong foundations of trust had been shattered and it would take several years to rebuild and resolve the many grudges that were held against their newly allied neighbours.

After the conclusion of The Great War much of the dust trade that people had grown to know, had collapsed. Regular merchants, trustworthy sellers, and familiar shop fronts had all been raided, pillaged, or abandoned leaving the only reliable source of dust through the ever growing black market or bandit camps. It would take decades for the dust industry to reach it's former glory, for the Schnee family to enter into the fray, but for now those who held dust within their grasps were considered rather... affluent.

» T E C H N O L O G Y
The quality and richness of technology during the Great War was much more primitive than that in the world of RWBY. The world famous CCT (Cross Continental Transmit System) was a network that had yet to be fully built, and with Scrolls being a device that was not even rolled out as a concept the majority of communication was still passed through the means of hand delivered mail or short wave radio.

Transportation within this time period held more of a focus on trains, boats and horse carts as automotive and air alternatives were reserved to those who could afford such luxury. Advancements in robotics and cybernetics have never been heard of as Atlas was still focusing on the building of its academy rather than its military might.

» T H E C R E A T U R E S G R I M M
The rise of Grimm during, and after the war was always a major concern. The anger, the pain, the sense of despair; all the negative emotions attracted these damned creatures towards mankind played havoc as tensions between kingdoms still ran high. At any point a town could be overrun by these monsters, and in an instant be wiped from existence. Could all this lead to the next biggest disaster since the War?

For this roleplay you will be playing that of a huntsmen or huntress, a representative from the academy of your choosing. You have been given the honourable task of travelling towards the island of Vytal, to meet with your future companions, and to discover the mysteries that have been building up day by day. Each character will begin their journey on route to this location, first meeting at a shipping port in Sanus before venturing across the ocean to the island of Vytal.

Your skills are yet to be perfected, your fighting style is weak, but you believe that this may be a brilliant opportunity to get a step up against your former classmates, and return a hero. It is such a shame to know that for some they may never return to the place they once called home, that this would be their first and final mission as a huntsman.

R O L E P L A Y F O C U S
To keep expectations clear, this roleplay will be focusing on a mixture of character interactions and personal development while also containing a fair amount of slice of life elements and environmental exploration. There will be some action scenes and occasional conflicts that will trouble and challenge your character, however I must stress that if you are joining this roleplay solely for the arena style shoot-out/monster fight, then you may discover the pace to not be of what you expected.

Thank you for understanding and I look forward to working with my future players.

R U L E S
Rules, requirements and important details. Please ensure that you read through carefully and understand what is required of this roleplay.

» The Behaviour of the Roleplayers:
Any player who joins my roleplays must remain on their best behaviour at all times. You are to respect your fellow roleplayers and understand that this project will only work if we focus on having a good time. If any problems should occur they are to be raised with me immediately.
» The Common Rules of Roleplaying:
Do not metagame, powerplay, or godmod your characters. Your characters will only know what they have discovered on their journey, not what has been discussed within the OOC. You are to only control your own character and must discuss any actions with other players if there are to be any character interactions. In some situations collaboration posts may be an option for those more important scenes however they are to be used sparingly, ie: the majority of your posts should be about your own characters. Keep in mind that your character is still human and thus they are someone who can bleed, make mistakes, and occasionally fail.
» Post Length and Dedication:
This is a Casual to Advance level roleplay, meaning that each post will have a requirement of several paragraphs or enough information to depict a scene. Narration, actions, dialogue and emotion are all important features that should be considered as you construct your post. By joining this roleplay you are agreeing to the terms that you will post at least once within a ten day period. Failure to abide by this rule, without informing me prior, will result in the player's complete removal from the roleplay.
» Be Creative and Have Fun:
This is a character driven roleplay that will progress and develop thanks to the decisions that you choose. Keep in mind that the plot will act as a long term driving force for the characters and thus you can use elements of it to your advantage during story telling. Roleplaying is, and always will be, a hobby. Remember that and you will become a brilliant writer.

C H A R A C T E R S H E E T
Listed below will be a topic guide on the details that should be included in the character sheet. I will be selecting sheets based on the quality of the writing; the balance and correlation of their Skills, Weapon and Semblance; and the level of passion for the project. Due to this the "First Come, First Served" expectations don't apply, nor do "Hold my Position".

So you still wanna join? Then show me something that you are proud of!

» Name:
RWBY names typically follow that of a colour. If you have trouble then this name generator may just help you out.
» Character Image:
Stick to Anime and Artistic Imagery. (No Photography)
» Gender:
Character Gender
» Age:
Ages Sixteen to Twenty-One
» Race:
Human or Faunus
» Academy of Origin:
Beacon Academy in Vale, Shade Academy in Vacuo, Haven Academy in Mistral, or Atlas Academy in Mantle
» Appearance and Personality:
Use this section to detail your character, including elements such as: clothing style, facial features, their social presence, and even their mannerisms.
» Life & Motivations:
Discuss how it is that they got to where they are, any hardships they endured, any achievements that have accomplished. Other than becoming a chosen Hunter/Huntress, mention what they may hope to achieve through the journey they have undertaken. Keep this section detailed but concise. Remember that it is only a character sheet and not an autobiography.
» Weapons & Skills:
Describe your character's weapon of choice, providing any pictures if possible, along with any unique skills that they may know. Do these traits help only the user, or are they able to be used in conjunction with other characters?
» Semblance:
A character's Semblance is a unique ability, a projection of one's Aura in a physical phenomena. They can range from an active ability to a passive one but for the most part are situational and require deep concentration to use. Add in any weaknesses and limitations that these abilities may have, while any drawbacks should go hand in hand with the benefits.

Color me interested!

Would it be all right to ask questions at this time about character building, or would it be better to wait until the RP post itself is made and to have that discussion in the OOC?

I've been looking for a RWBY RP with an interesting spin on it: I'm 100% on board.

For clarification, though: we're not playing the no doubt skilled, experienced and dependably veterans of the Great War, but new recruits that are yet to complete training, on this mission to save artifacts which could ruin the world. Correct?

I don't mind discussing the character building now. Only reason why I didn't place up the character sheet template and such in here is cause I wanted to gauge interest first since there are so many RWBY role plays and it may be a little saturated.

Correct. Think about it as the children of those who fought in the war. My aim was to avoid the over elite style characters and that each player has some room for growth, both as a person and in their skills. The war ended recently, three years ago maybe, and the academies have been in construction for maybe two years. Numbers in this regard aren't important since a war doesn't end over night, but it allows you to understand context and theme.

I also felt that branching too far away from the familiar formula would create too much disarray and confusion. I still want it to feel somewhat RWBY like but with a different twist, otherwise it's just another "swords with guns" RP.

I am definitely liking what I am seeing so far, you can certainly count me interested, sure as sure! Only question I have in mind that hasn't been covered yet is, with the small group size and that the call was sent to each Academy, their would only be one or two hunter/huntress in training from each newly built Academy? I also reckon weapon tech for hunters/huntresses is nowhere near as advanced as they appear in the actual show, correct? Certainly got some ideas in mind in that regard, either way.

@NuttsnBoltsQuestion: Would a Faunus character be valid given the fact that war if Faunus civil rughts hasn't happen yet, meaning that Faunus are second class citizens at best and slaves at worst, if i have my time frames correct

Well... Yes, possibly, but who's to say that they will actually send someone? Maybe they did and the person got lost, or maybe one academy felt like it wanted to really show their support so they sent three. While it's a good question the true answer for why it's a small group size is that I don't feel comfortable GMing large groups of people.

I also reckon weapon tech for hunters/huntresses is nowhere near as advanced as they appear in the actual show, correct? Certainly got some ideas in mind in that regard, either way.

Weapon tech still advanced to a degree so you can still roll with your unique designs, but I removed cybernetics, the mobile communication network and the majority of personal vehicles.

@NuttsnBoltsQuestion: Would a Faunus character be valid given the fact that war if Faunus civil rughts hasn't happen yet, meaning that Faunus are second class citizens at best and slaves at worst, if i have my time frames correct

There was no actual date for the Faunus Civil Rights movement when I was doing research... So we'll say this is before that. The Treaty of Peace is meant to remove all the slave laws and bring everyone into line, but like the war it doesn't happen overnight so there still may be some slaves and second class citizens. So yes, your train of thought is right.

I can definitely understand not being comfortable with too large a group, so its a fine answer either way. Got my current questions covered, so I shall brainstorm a character in the meantime.

My main question about weapon tech has already been answered - I was actually almost looking forward to figuring out a more primitive but interesting combination weapon. Good to know there is more flexibility there, though.

We can play Faunus characters, then, as long as we take into account that the prejudice against them will likely be very strong depending on the area they are going through - as children of those who lived through the Great War, they will probably have lots of memories of prejudice.

This brings up the matter of character age: The Academies start training at age 17 and go for four years, so none of our characters would theoretically be older than 21, right?

So, what about names? The Great War was fought over the right to self-expression, but if the characters are children of the rising generation, they would have already had their names given to them prior to the color naming convention that pervaded the world. I'm fine either way, I think the color naming convention is one of the distinctive setting points of RWBY - just curious how we should approach that for this, given the approximate timing.

One idea I've had already has been some type of bard or musician type of character who uses a "lute-saber." I'm not entirely sure how serious I am about this idea, just kind of tossing it out there to see what people think.

Whatever works for you. You do have a Semblance as well and characters like Blake simply have a blade and rope so not everyone has to be technical.

I had 16-20, but I just bumped that up to 21. A bit relative to when they started the course, but also because the academies are new you may have a few first years who are 20. Much like a college course that caters to a broader audience. 21 will be the max cause I don't wanna have too much in the way of adult/parent like characters at all.

So, what about names? The Great War was fought over the right to self-expression, but if the characters are children of the rising generation, they would have already had their names given to them prior to the color naming convention that pervaded the world. I'm still rolling with the colour naming as for the reason you stated, it helps with the overall theme.
RWBY Names
I used this link for my main character and tweaked it a bit as I felt the original was a bit short. Lorral, based on Floral White.

I've been bouncing all over the spectrum of weapon combos for my character so far, probably going to be the longest part of figuring the character out, alongside semblance (which I haven't even considered yet, now that I think of it). Got a few ideas already, alongside images for em since that makes it easier to visualize its workings to a degree, including a long sword/flamethrower, arming sword/compound bow, bladed quarterstaff/paired shotguns, anti-material rifle/scythe, and rapier/SMG to just name a few. Also tempted to just keep it simple and ditch the transformation system entirely, which could fit some of the ideas bouncing around for the character in mind.

I've updated the first post to give you guys the template for the character sheets. Hopefully that will help in the creation process.

I'll be looking at posting up the OOC this evening so we can start to get the ball rolling. Any questions are more than welcome and I will answer them as soon as possible.

Tenatively interested! Just a couple questions.

1. What's the posting requirements like? Length and quality has never been an issue for me, but I am juggling a few games (plus real life adulting) and would ideally like something that is once or twice a week on average for posting.

2. Are pictures mandatory? I tend to shy away from them unless I either commission a drawing or someone's kind enough to sketch. I'd be more than happy to write up a decent description.

3. Are characters based on motiffs like the show (e.g. fairy tales for RWBY, cross dressing warriors for JNPR)?

That's all I got for now, I love the detail and effort you put into this already and I've always had half an eye out for a RWBY game in Advanced!

This is what I have so far; posting this now to give an idea to the other players as to what I'm aiming for as far as weapon, color, and nation my character is from.

Also looking for critique on the skills I've made so far; I wasn't exactly sure what skills were meant to be in context since they aren't part of the Semblance, so I just took a stab at a couple of common technique combos Marina could theoretically do with her weapon. I deliberately made one of the techniques a teamwork feat to avoid focusing too hard on her offense capability.

I still have to fill out appearance and personality as well as life & motivations and Semblance, so I realize this is far from complete. I'm debating between healing or something water-based for her Semblance (maybe she's able to move in water as freely as air, including being able to breathe underwater? Though I don't know how much that will come in useful), though the thought occurs to me that I could operate on her last name and have some kind of firework/signal flare ability. I'd appreciate thoughts or suggestions in this direction.

It's an American Anime by RoosterTeeth. The first trailer is here and that'll give you an idea for what to expect. The black creatures are Grimm, but the design changed when the series started to incorporate white and red masks.

1. What's the posting requirements like? Length and quality has never been an issue for me, but I am juggling a few games (plus real life adulting) and would ideally like something that is once or twice a week on average for posting.

To give an idea for length, I'll reference a recent post I made for another roleplay, but this will give a guide as to what you will be expecting: [Link]
I mentioned that it'll be up to a 10 day turn around between a particular character's posts, and with the low number of people it shouldn't be too heavy for someone. By keeping collaboration to a minimum too, you should find it easier to write in your own, rather than 5am so you can work with that one person. (Joys of being an Australian)

2. Are pictures mandatory? I tend to shy away from them unless I either commission a drawing or someone's kind enough to sketch. I'd be more than happy to write up a decent description.

I enjoy visuals as I do come from an artistic family, but I do realise not everyone will be so inclined. If you happen to come across an image at a later date you can add it in, but if your writing and description is of a quality standard then I don't see a reason to decline.

3. Are characters based on motiffs like the show (e.g. fairy tales for RWBY, cross dressing warriors for JNPR)?

That's all I got for now, I love the detail and effort you put into this already and I've always had half an eye out for a RWBY game in Advanced!

No. I dropped the team theme name cause it's too hard to say, "your name must start with Q", and not everyone will have the same flavour when it comes to team themes.

Also nice to see someone else keeping an eye out for advance level Rwby stuff. ^-^

Won't give a full feedback until you finish, mostly cause decisions change and ideas evolve over time, but I can offer some guidance

Skills are meant to be details about the character's proficiencies or abilities that may help them. Clark Kent's powers (Semblance) would be flight and laser vision while as Superman, but his skills would be that he's a skilled reporter so he knows the latest news, or he has a skill for blending in with the use of a different hairstyle and glasses. They are something that sets your character apart, but are not necessarily used to define your character.

There will be water and weather variations within the roleplay. If you have a look at my character she is impacted by sunlight so I can use her to indicate and reference the changing environment around her. Aquatic Respiration does feel like something that wouldn't really fit into the theme or style of RWBY as that is more of a mutant style of ability. As alternate ideas, she might be able to walk across water or utilise 3D space while it's raining, ie: bound up rain as if they were stairs.

Please remember that I will only hold a maximum of 5 players, including the GM. I will also take time to review the characters that are submitted so I can get an understanding for the balance, while also making it fair for those who may be stuck in different timezones or busy outside the forum. Best of luck to all.
