In this age, all has been well. The newly reformed panel of 12 has settled back into their seats in the heavens; each sitting upon their thrones in their realms. The world has been through a great deal with the exile and elimination of the former thirteenth god , Tiras Veil the Shadow. The dark god found issue with the manner in which the gods' were allowing one another to interact with this world they had all created together; that is, no direct interaction at all. She believed that her supreme shadow should be allowed to cast down on the humans, her followers or not, as she reveled in sacrifice and bloodshed made in her name. The gods previously put up with her because she represented a necessary aspect of their creations' nature, evil, but her behavior and resistance eventually pushed them too far. One age prior to the one we live in now, Tiras Veil and the 12 came to conflict. The shadow had gathered all of creation's evil beings from the corners of the universe to battle with her: demons, dark muses, even turned angels and archangels from the camps of the other's. The war across the cosmos had major effects on the world below. The balance gave way to great discord as gods could no longer gently steer the wheel of humanity's progression. Great wars were fought. Rape and pillaging became common throughout the kingdoms, leaders turned a blind eye to starving populations, amazing golden age infrastructure fell apart as it seemed the seams of what was a fantastic reality gave in to this dispute. Tiras Veil revelled in the great sorrow.
It had to end. Finally, in the an event known as The Great Phantasm, the 12 combined all of their power and did something that even they doubted they would be able to do. They killed a god. Reports say a bright flash dazzled across a starless sky radiating what the common man could only describe as hope. The war was over; no more sorrow. With the seeming-less infinite battle concluded, the gods returned to their realms in the heavens and gazed upon their ravaged creation. Much had been lost: years of literature and histories, glorious structures that their hands had helped paint, and many many innocent lives. Humanity would survive and adapt though, after all they were made in the gods' images. About 300 seasons later humanity continues to try to rebuild what it has lost, and relearn what it has forgotten. Man has grown complacent and jolly once again. They never could have expected us.
Magic:
Before I delve in to the real premise of the roleplay I would like to explain the magic in this setting a little bit (Magi is in the title after all) Humanity is well versed in the fact that there is magic in this world. All magic has a divine source at SOME point. Most magic, however, does not come straight from the gods. Magic is most often obtained directly from objects that have magical energy stored inside them. These items either exist because A) They are divine creations of the gods, B) A ritual summoning a god's (or other powerful being's) energy was used to make an object a vessel, or C) an object has been left in a place of strong magical presence for a very long time. This makes the collection of magical weapons and artifacts important for mages. 99% of human beings can only directly access divine power through a ritual, and usually their must be some target, vessel, or medium for the energy to interact with in order to become a usable tool/weapon. The only humans that may freely access divine powers from gods (or others) are Paladins who are the gods' chosen vessels and are tasked with important quests from these gods. I hope that isn't too convoluted; if you have any questions feel free to ask.
The premise:
You and your comrades were raised in the last known pocket of influence Tiras Veil has on this planet. A small cult started at the end of the gods' war by a supposed demi-god of Tiras Veil known as Bali Veil. Bali laid out the cult's primary mission to be carried forth generationally by the members. The goal is to seek vengeance for Tiras Veil by training powerful and resourceful mages capable of climbing through the heavens to reach the Thirteenth Throne; the vacant seat of Tiras. There the mages are to find the means to slay the 12 and bring about a new age as the new gods in heaven. You will battle powerful mages of humanity, godly paladins, demons long forgotten, and even godly beings on your path to slay the gods! Pretty simple right?
