"TALES OF THE LONELY INN"

......The sun struggled to reach the forest floor as it hovered high overhead. It was spring in Candleshire and the great trees of the Greenwood wore their emerald crowns proudly.
The old trail was bordered on either side by the purple an blue star flowers which thrived in the shadows of the forest floor.
It was barely wide enough for a horse to walk along and in many places low hanging branches would have prevented the horse being ridden. The trail had no name and only those that lived at it's ends and were well versed adventures knew of it's existence.
The path was quite old and along it from time to time could be seen elven tor stones that marked the intersection of old elven roads which were now grown over an forgotten even by the elves themselves.
But this trail it passed many a beautiful sight as well as foreboding ruin but best known to all who walked it's path was "The Lonely Inn"

THE LONELY INN

The Inn though secluded was no run down shack covered by moss an vine but a tidy little place near the "Slyph Falls" by the "Lost River"
It's proprietor Esmeralda Sirensong is a Raven haired beauty whom is known to be a Good Witch.
Far from the King's Highway the Inn's lovely land lord must brew or distill all that which she serve save a few bottles of rare vintage that were made gifts by former happy an grateful patrons.
There is no fighting allowed at the Inn and should one erupt then those that started it will find themselves magically banished by she who calls the Inn home an hearth.
In the Tavern the lady has Nymph which act as serving maids and watch the Inn when the Mistress isn't present.

Okay anyone who's read this far this is a more traditional D&D style setting
I want to see if you'll help me create a living world with countries and adventures in their mysterious lands

The Races allowed will be brief and sorry more mundane than some might wish

Humans.........Dwarves........Elves
Drow*...........Half-Elves.....Gnomes
Halflings......Orcs*...............Half-Orcs

I said mundane, LOL

I want to keep it this way at the beginning in order to prevent the over topping of Dragon Born, Vampires an Werewolves as well as other overused exotic types

Okay some have noticed the "*" over two of the races this is there to indicate that those characters of these races are Outcasts because they aren't of evil alignment. Like the rest of their race. They may be neutral evil but I will be watching them

Now on to the nuts an bolts
All characters will be based loosely on the 2nd edition D&D that I learned to play from the age of ten because my uncle said after that the game became a monetary crawl by WOTC and complicated. (Also because I own a lot more of that system's books lol)
All characters will be considered to have 10 levels of experience and that means total levels so if you want to be multi classed then you'll divide.
I don't expect complete character sheets with Stats, THACOs an ACs but I will calculate such on my own an fit you character's actions and successes by such. Don't look so worried you're all the Hero's of this story, your strength legend, your skills above reproach and the people whom the minstrels will sing ballads of long after you've turned to dust or ash.

SEX :
ALIGNMENT :
CLASS :
WEAPONS :
ARMOR :
MAGIC ITEMS :
SPELL LIST :

(Multi Level division shown on Class as Mage5/Ranger5)

Now briefly limits Magic Weapons, Armor, an Items
Weapons = 2 /+3 divided among both or contained in 1
Armor = 2 (can be rings or robes) /+3 divided among both or contained in 1
Magic Items = 3 /if protective +2 limit and any must be approved by me

Okay that about covers that now on to plot
I see this as a joint effort but will be adding the lion's share in support and acting as Benevolent Dictator on content

You can make up to three characters but the must be members of separate adventuring parties

Now for my last word
If you aren't familiar with any of the above or I've managed to confuse you send me a PM

Both approved, now everyone who goes here must act as if it is your first time
You have either heard of the Inn from someone or you accidently stumble across it

hm...being a bard and all...I think my character will have heard of it from someone. because Bards get around quite a lot.

Of course, a Bard would likely hear it from any number of sources

Yup. And according to the way D&D works, a bard is a really rare class, because of all the work it takes to become one.

Oh goodness, first edition bards were insane! Dual classing twice? Thankfully second edition fixed a lot of that. I particularly liked second edition's "Create a Class" feature from the Dungeon Master's Guide. I created a class that required zero xp to go up levels :) Yes... you would start at INFINITE LEVEL!!! Mwah hah hah hah hah! Mind you, no GM would allow that for some reason....

Realistically, any class can be a bard. I've seen fighter bards, rogue bards and wizard bards. All you need is the ability to play a single decent instrument, have a reasonable charisma, and a penchant for gossip and storytelling. Mind you, my favourite from second edition was the "Riddlemaster Kit" for the bard class. I had a ten page list of riddles that I carried for days and came to memorize. I then challenged nearly every NPC to riddle contests like Bilbo and Gollum.

Reasonable? From what I've seen, you need at least 15 charisma to be a decent bard. and for me that's high for a typical character. they actually reccomend you have at least 10 for each attribute.

I meant by comparison to bards in the first edition which had to progress up as a bard, then become a rogue and finally a druid before finally being allowed to take up the bard class. It was crazy.

In second edition, being able to play a Paladin, Ranger or a Bard was a rarity. In fact, the initial die rolling determined your entire career. If you rolled poorly you were likely going to be a rogue. You also died when you hit zero hit points. There was no "unconsciousness" or "negative ten" bleed. Generally, all statistics were pretty much the same unless you were under nine or above fifteen. Ability bonuses were rare.

It was only later that we implemented 4D6, drop the lowest die and the point buy systems so that you could play the class you really wished for that things started to change.

*sighs..* I used to have many of the "Complete Handbooks": Fighter, Thief, Elves, Dwarves, Druid, Ranger, Bard, Barbarian, Halflings & Gnomes, Humanoids, & Ninja. Sadly, all those books are gone now. *sniffle*
The one thing (besides THAC0) I hated about 2nd edition was the racial limits on classes.

Anyways, I may jump in on this if you have room for one more.

Well, Rumiko mentioned multiple characters but no more than one per party. This implies, to me at least, that she's looking for quite a number of players. Additionally, we have but three applications at the moment plus Rumiko's own character for a total of four? I would feel safe providing the assumption, and yes it is an assumption, that there is plenty of room.

In the core book of second edition that is correct. The supplements, each of the racial handbooks and the bard book included quite a number of variations on the bard. The Dwarven Battle Drummer was particularly interesting. He could rouse his clan's morale in battle with a steady beat upon his drums and an Earthy chant. Second Edition lasted for a great many years and even had a few sub-editions.

There's only one thing I hated about the bard: the limitation on how often he can use his magical songs. Once per day per level.

What I've always enjoyed about most Paper, Dice an table top RPGs is the fact that all allowed the GM the ability to use, alter or banish any rules that they liked

Oh, and I've seen some crazy house rules.
--One game I was in, you only got one character, not for the campaign... but FOREVER. If you died you were never supposed to play D&D ever again.
--A Sci-Fi one where the players argued to follow the book when the GM was trying to keep his players alive. The rulebook claimed that their guns did x100 damage while they wore armour that only gave about sixty hit points. We were about to try and bust out of a prison... It would have been ugly.
--Barbed arrows do 1d6 going in, 1d6+2 coming out. The GM thought this made sense and then was shocked when everyone decided to play a ranger... Go figure.
--A GM I had created an artifact in the form of a dagger that kicked you out of his campaign if you were killed by it. He claimed it drank the soul that moved between characters, which also explained why new player characters were so similar to the one's that just died.
--fireball and lightning damage "bounced" off nearby walls. This led to my group using Otiluke's Spheres on big enemies and then dropping lightning bolts inside for 80d6 damage.
