You have been contacted due to your outstanding scores on your exams. You show great potential In becoming a fantastic mage and we hope you continue to grow as a magical user in the future. Here at IMFO we can help you become stronger and open doorways that will lead you to a prosperous life. We would love to have you here.
For those of you who would join us here at IMFO, we are having an open interview at the testing grounds just outside the city's borders at the west gate tomorrow at 12pm. We hope to see you there!"
You close the email and ponder. You know IMFO is a highly respected organization; the organization every mage in the city dreams of entering. Only a few gifted mages are chosen each year to represent the organization. You, by what seems like a miracle, have been accepted among the thousands of other mages that reside in the city, to join. There is no doubt in your mind; you have been accepted into nearly half of the agencies that are located throughout the city, but none hold a candle to IMFO. You have to join!
Shortly after processing the wonderful news in your head, a second email pops up from the same sender. It reads,
"Make sure to bring a second set of clothes!"
Welcome to New Edis. A highly populated city that stretches over hundreds of miles and is home to the majority of the world's mages. This mega city holds roughly 4.6 million residents and is still growing. In this city you can find all types of people, ranging from farmers to mages to bureaucrats. New Edis is home to the highest number of Mages living in a single area, this is because of the wonderful opportunities New Edis offers magical users in terms of career choices. Scattered through out New Edis are establishments called agencies, these agencies offer magical users careers as professional mages. This massive city is surrounded by a 30ft wall that not only protects the citizens from outside sources, but also acts as a border of sorts. Entry into New Edis is monitored closely by the local police department, making sure nothing that isn't human can get in. Agencies and agency affiliates are free to enter and exit the city at their will, a simple flash of their pass and they're good to go.
Over the past 15 years crime rates have been steadily on the incline, the numbers of news worthy incidents growing each passing year. With an ever growing city like New Edis, it was an inevitable consequence of having so high of a population. Crime rates usually grow in big cities, but what sets aside New Edis especially is the magical crime rate. People will commit crimes, but when a Mage commits a crime it is on a different level, or it just paints a negative picture of mages. These are the types of crimes that agencies usually deal with, along with protecting the city from external sources.
One of these agencies is called the International Mages and Founders Organization (IMFO). IMFO is a highly sought after agency that every mage strives to join. It was made up of mages who call themselves the Founders, in their day they were some of the strongest mages to have lived. After creating IMFO they passed down their knowledge and legacy onto the people who joined, people who later became outstanding mages.
You have been accepted into IMFO. At the end of each school year students take magical examinations, these examinations are to gauge how well you know or can use your magic. Teachers then send these magical exam results to various agencies around New Edis that best fit your magic and you as a person. Teachers then inform graduating students that in one year, you will hear back from agencies. If a student is good, they will hear back from 2 or 3 agencies. You however, you have received acceptance letters from several, including IMFO. Its time to step up and start your new life as a professional mage.
Agencies are organizations that work independently and cooperatively with the government of New Edis. Agencies are home to magical users who utilize their magic exceptionally well, these magical users are then given the title of professional mages. As a professional mage it is your job to protect New Edis from external threats and to put an end to any magical crime within the city. Back in the day there was only one agency, but once that single agency started getting funded by the government, agencies have been popping up all around. This lead to fierce competition, which bread strong mages. Strong mages then went on to create IMFO.
Mages come in all shapes and sizes, anybody can become a professional mage with enough hard work and dedication. Through practice and perseverance a mage can become exceptional with his/her magic. Usually a mage focus' on one style of magic instead of learning a bunch of different styles. This helps them be proficient in one kind of magic that they can utilize Perfectly. A master of one over a master of none. Some professional mages have practiced two types of magic for years, the one being their main magic and the other being a secondary magic. The secondary magic is usually weaker than their main
Magic power is found within every living thing. From plants to animals, magic power lies within the soul of any organism . Humans however, are the only species to develops the necessary amount of magic control to utilize the magic power that is stored within them. by accessing this pool of magic power that every human has, a person can summon fourth this magic power and manifest it into a physical form. This physical for is the magic that we see mages use on an everyday basis.
Tools have been created to help focus magical power into a more concentrated state, making it not only easier to control but stronger as well. These tools are known as a Spell Focus. A mage that wields magic without a spell focus is similar to mowing grass with a pair of scissors, it can still be done but it will be less effective and the end result will be unsatisfactory. For example, Casting illusion magic without a spell focus will not look realistic, but would look more like a Victorian style painting.
A spell focus can be anything. It may take the form of a wand, a necklace, a ring or even something uncommon like a sword or gauntlet. Every mage has learned how to create a spell focus through their schools. A mage must imbue an item with their magic power over the course of five hours, this usually drains the magic power of a mage for some time but no other side effects occur. Needless to say every spell focus is attuned to a mage and can only be used by said mage.
In this world of magic you will find that every mage has their style, their preferred method. A mage will usually find they excel in a certain kind of magic, a kind of magic that has distinct properties to it. These different kinds of magic all fall under certain categories called Schools.
These are the different schools that can be found in this world:
Rituals: a type of magic that is seldom used these days due to the fast pace of the world. No longer taught in schools, ritual magic is know to be the oldest type of magic. Being proficient in this school of magic allows its user to cast magic over long periods of time. The effects of these spells last longer and often are very powerful. The only downside is a Mage must have external resources they can use to sacrifice for each ritual (3g of salt, herbs, bone marrow etc.). the casting time for rituals usually takes hours, sometimes days.
Modification Magic: this school of magic is popular among the residents of New Edis who did not join agencies. Not that this school isn't strong, but rather they have more applications in every day life. Modification magic is used to change you or the world around you in some way, shape or form. A good pick for a secondary magic. Those who are proficient in Modification magic and use it as their main, can turn out to be formidable Mages indeed. (ex. Teleportation, telepathy, transformation)
Caster/Control magic: The most common and well known school of magic. Control mages use their magic power to create/manipulate the environment around them. People who specifically use elemental type magic are proficient in this school. in this school of magic, manipulation of a preexisting object is much harder than simply creating an object, manipulation is closer to Modification magic than it is to Control Magic. Aside from the elements, proficiency in this school allows you to control things that have to do with the environment (ex. Shadows, lightning, wood, concrete etc.)
Enhancement: a basic form or magic that is similar to Modification Magic that uses less power and is only self inflicted. Being proficient in this school allows people to use magic in order to enhance their physical traits (strength, speed, enhanced eyesight etc). What sets the school of enhancement aside from other schools, is the magic power consumption. It takes very little magic power to use.
Illusion: there aren't many different kinds of illusion magic, but they can be effective if used properly in the right situations. the magic that is found in this school often involves portraying an image in the world or in someone's mind. If used right you can effectively change someone's emotion or thought process by casting a form of illusion magic on them. The length of illusions is dependant on how much magical power you use when casting said illusion.
Summoning: under this school of magic, Mages use their magic power to call beings into existence . There are all kinds of magic that fall under the school of summoning, such magic that involves summoning animals, mythical beasts, humanoids and even objects. Mages who have honed their skills to a high degree can summon creatures and items that will exist permanently, these summonings are usually no bigger than a Cubic meter.
Abyssal: this school of magic is rarely used due to its destructive nature and its inclination to consume its user. Some parts of the world have banned this school of magic, while places like Edis just keep a eye on it. Magic in this school often have a connection to death and evil, but that's not always the case. Magic like necromancy and blood magic fall under this school. Abyssal is not taught in schools and is hard to find in libraries, making it a very hard school to be proficient in because of the lack of information surrounding it.
Invigoration: this school is commonly used by support mages or as a secondary magic. Healing, rejuvenating stamina and giving others positive status effects all full under this school. Proficiency in this school allows users to use magic that involve the transfer of your magical power into someone else, the effects of which are Dependant on the type of magic under this school.
These 8 schools of magic make up the world of spells in a mages arsenal. When you are learning the ways of magic in school you are often given tests to see which school of magic you resonate with the most, more often than not, you will use a magic that falls under the school you resonate with the most.

The school your proficient in is just the overall category, the 'type' is more specific. For example, you're proficient in 'control' magic but the type is 'Fire'.
After re-reading the OP it does seem a bit unclear, I'll go over and edit out The words 'type of' and just leave 'Magic'. Also I'll change proficiencies to school of magic. There's some typos in there that I missed as well so I'll edit those too. @KatherinWinter
@Kit DewStein just a little something about your character, maybe something that's not significant to others but is to your character. For example, "She always wears a necklace of a pineapple given to her by a relative."
Name: Henry Starcrag Age: 18 Gender: Male Appearance: Personality: Shy, quick tempered, quiet Biography: Comes from a prominent family and was always provided for which made him shy since he never met a lot of people. Mages run in his family and he plans to keep up his family name. He is constantly trying to best his older brother who did something other than the family business and got in fights constantly with him which became part of his personality. (May have went a bit overboard??) School of Magic: Enhancement Magic: Enhanced Strength and Skin Spell focus: Gloves, the ones in the appearance picture Trivia: Has dogtags from his older brother
Personality: Serious, a bit lazy, brave, sometimes a complainer, along with being sneaky or plays dirty.
Biography: Tamu came from a part of the city that's constantly had problems with gangs. Growing up with the problems in his neighborhood and nothing was really being done about it, Tamu decided to learn some skills to be a mage in order to deal with the problems.
School of Magic: Summoning
Magic: mythical insect summonings (basically insects/bugs that are much larger than normal, of course within the 1 cubic meter size). Tamu can only summon 2-3 three at a time and can exist temporarily for minutes to maybe an hour or until they've been defeated. Summoning too many will put a strain on Tamu's magic. (Here is a list so far of what Tamu can summon)
(The summons of course have their natural abilities.) Black Spider- A tarantula/black widow mixed looking spider capable of producing webs for capturing, trapping/incapacitating it's master's enemies.
Golden wasp- a large wasp that's capable of releasing pheromones to trace ones it marks. Capable of flight and stinger can cause paralysis and intense pain.
Brawler Beetle- a beetle humanoid with incredible strength, durable armored body, a strong protruding horn that can crush stone, and quite a temper.
Mantis- Great agility, swordsmanship skills,stealth and speed. It has 4 bladed arms and is capable of brief flight.
Butterfly- flight, poison generation that could either cause vertigo, sickness, or paralysis.
Terra-worm- Skilled with burrowing through the ground even if that minerals are as hard as stone. great for surprise attacks, weakening the area for traps, hiding, and for under ground travel.
Flaring-fly- A fire fly that can emit different shades of light even to the point of near blinding.
Noise cricket- Capable of limited sound manipulation.

@Kit DewStein Any magic that falls under the school of enhancement takes little magic power, so I would be okay if you had one more kind of enhancement if that's what you were asking. Also, a little bit more to your bio would be appreciated.

Awesome! The only thing, they aren't swarms, they're just one large bug at a time. Like for instance, he'd have a Spider the size of a pitbull. A wasp thats the size of a doberman, a butter fly the size of a peacock and so on. Would that be okay? He may have 6-8 different singular bugs he can summon. Maybe summon 2-3 at most at a time?

Personality: Camellia is a silent and a serious person which is hostile towards people she just met. She tries to avoid social interaction and prefers to be by herself. Usually, she can be found reading or writing non-fiction and/or fiction texts. She's also a night owl and she tends to stay awake untill she passes out. Camellia lacks charisma and she might seem unsympethetic.
If she considers you to be her friend, she will start to act in a protective manner and when she has a crush on someone, she turns into a hopeless romantic. Camellia is agile and she is a great dancer.
She loves studying, writing, dancing and reading.
Biography: Ever since she was a child, Camelia found the topic of magic to be quite fascinating, so it was only natural that she wanted to learn how to use it.

Personality: Erika is laidback and loves a good prank, though despite her fun loving attitude, Erika can be apathetic and at times uncaring even to close friends. Erika is often stuck in her head, just thinking for hours on end, she contemplates the world and the things within, philosophizing. She sees herself as a social experiment and takes note of the things she does voluntarily versus the involuntary reactions that she may have.
Biography: Erika wanted to test herself and see how far is she truly willing to go for others. Like everything else in her life, she sees it as a test wondering if she will help people out of sheer feelings or just because of more beneficial reasons.
