Superhero Name: Hellblazer
Secret Identity: John Constantine
Origin Story: As a young boy growing up in the poorer side of good old London City with his Aunt and Uncle, John Constantine was greatly intrigued by the subject of Magic. He'd been obsessed with it every since his 4th birthday when his sister had bought him a book about the great sorcerer Merlin. In his state of childhood innocence, John truly believed the stories of the occult to be true and would often vist the local library after school, studying as much as he could about the subject, His sister Cheryl encouraged him in this, mainly because she wanted her brother to enjoy a full childhood after their father, a mean, cruel drunkard of a man had gone to prison in their old home of Liverpool for robbery when John and Cheryl were just babies. Their mother had died of shame upon learning this news.
When John was about 11 and his Sister 13, their father was released from jail and they returned home to Liverpool to live with him once more. With tears in his eyes he greeted his chilgren at the front gate of their cottage and embraced them, promising that from then on they would live better and happier lives together. Sadly, these promises were to be false, for while Thomas Constantine kept his promise for the first few months, disaster soon struck the family once again. One day, while working at a cigarette factory in the city, John's father was working at the paper cutting machine when years of terrible business practises took their toll. The blade responsible for cutting the paper came loose and flew off from it's hinges, causing so much injury to Thomas' arm, that it had to be amputated. The shock of this incident would lead John to swear off smoking forever. from that point on, he would only indulge in Candy Cigarettes. Unable to provide or his family, he began to become cold and unfair to his children. His first step was to try to force his son to grow up so he could earn money in his stead. Destroying his toys and condemning his interest in magic by burning all of his books.
Realising that their father had become unhinged, Cheryl convinced her brother that they must run away from home and go their separate ways, lest their father find them. John was heartbroken by this suggestion, but Cheryl promised they would meet again. In the end, Cheryl headed to Scotland, while John attempted to head off to London where he would use what he remembered from his old magic books, to make his living as a street magician, his Aunt and uncle no longer having the money to accommodate him. One day, after a performance, he was approached by a mysterious gentleman in a silver cloak and white beard who persuaded John to come with him. Curious, John agreed and was lead to an old curios shop in the Portobello Road. Once inside he was lead down into the basement and there, he found himself in a room lit by candles and gas lamps and in the middle, surrounded by ancient books and artefacts around a huge, wooden table were a group of elderly gentlemen all dressed in Silver.
The man John had met introduced the group as "The Order of the Laughing Magicians" and himself as Kon-stan-tyn. The English king succeeding King Arthur after the fall of Camelot. He told John that he and all of the men seated were in fact members of the Constantine family who had lived throughout the centuries and had kept themselves alive through occultist means, in order to carry out the study and preservation of sorcery. The order explained that John's passion for mysticism came from inherited instinct rather than personal choice and that he was always destined to become a great magician like themselves. By means of a sacred pool of water, they had watched him grow and waited for the day when he would be ready to join them. It seemed, now that he was in his lowest state, that that day had come. And now, the order would train John in the mystic arts so that one day, he might use them for the betterment of mankind, as they had once done. Having no alternatives and no future other than living on the street, John agreed to become the Order's apprentice.
For 12 long years, John lived among the human race whilst being tutored in wizardry by his new family in secret. Within that time, he learned all that they had learned, discovered all that they had discovered and honed his new art to the fullest. Sadly, this made him arrogant and hotheaded and he soon began to become accustomed to doing things his way rather than the Order's. On the day of his 23rd Birthday, the training ended. John's graduation came and he was sent off into the world to try and find a way to put his powers to good use. 2 weeks later while sitting on his chair in his apartment, john was reading the paper when he found an article talking about a string of mysterious disappearances in Hyde Park. A few weeks prior, an up and coming magician from Jamaica calling himself "Papa Voodoo" had set up a circus there to preform shows for Londoners citywide. Sensing a connection, John headed to Hyde Park to investigate.
John waited until after Papa Voodoo's show was finished to start his work. However, knowing that he couldn't afford to be recognised in case something went wrong and the order was put in danger, he decided that he should wear a disguise and sneaking off into a changing tent he cobbled together a costume made up of a red coloured cape, red and blue leotards, high, red boots and long red gloves and a domino mask.
