Here's the interest check thread: roleplayerguild.com/topics/166788-arc…

Here's the premise again:

Heroes aren't born, they are made. Usually, this means a reasonably normal family life cut short when tragedy intervenes. You know them; Batman's parents were gunned down, Spider-Man's uncle was killed by a crook he chose not to stop earlier, Luke's aunt and uncle were killed by the Empire, Superman's planet blew up, etc. But what about those whose family dies when they are too young to go adventuring? They may dream of greatness, but realistically, they cannot go adventuring at age 10 or 12. While anything can happen in a fantasy story, there are certain breaks from realism which should be avoided. A knight slaying a dragon after years of training is one thing; an eight year old killing the same beast is just plain stupid and breaks the suspension of disbelief. How then do we avoid this conundrum? How can we have young would-be heroes portrayed in a fantasy world with at least some element of realism and responsibility in the picture?

Enter the Arcane Orphanage. In a darkening world, people need heroes, and children need someone to look after them. In an age where empires have fallen, safety is a rare commodity, and endemic warfare stalks the lands. As with any war of great scale, the unending conflicts have left countless orphans in their wake. To deal with this problem, a group of retired adventurers have established a facility to care for those without a family. Here, young sentient humanoids of every race are welcome to care and hospitality, be they human or halfling, elf or dwarf, goblin or kobold, it doesn't matter. Practically unique in this era of war and strife, the orphanage represents not only an oasis of calm, but a bastion of tolerance for all races.

But it is not a place for the lazy or foolish. Indeed, the Arcane Orphanage runs on a strict schedule, complete with education, exercise, training, and rules which are to be carefully observed. For the orphanage doesn't just care for the young, it does its best to prepare them for the challenges which are sure to come, giving them all at least some physical training as adventurers themselves, with the option to learn a craft if the life of a fighter, mage, or "rogue" (although not a criminal!) doesn't appeal to them. Very young orphans (under age six) would be cared for separately in a nursery owned by the staff but outside of the orphanage itself, to simplify matters of having to deal with very young characters. It would be a separate building, not really relevant to the RP unless we decide otherwise later.

The RP is going to need at least two players, with at least one character for each category: staff and students. One can play as many characters as one can handle, but I would recommend one or two main characters plus a small number of side characters if one wants to have them. Staff include (among others) teachers, trainers, and the headmaster, plus some miscellaneous workers. The orphanage comes equipped with separate dorms for the young males and females, some storage spaces, private rooms for the staff, a school with classrooms and a library, a mess hall which doubles as a meeting hall, some training rooms, a chapel, grounds outside for playing around, and a few other rooms. We can work out specifics later if we have to. I'm also working out the schedule and dress code, although the latter may vary a bit for some species.

Classes taught at the orphanage would cover the same range as the orphanage: ages 6-18. At first, they would learn how to read, write, and do basic math, along with some history and very basic magic for those interested in it. As teenagers, they would pursue advanced studies which would divide them along their chosen paths: fighter, mage, rogue, and vocational tracks. Fighters would engage in more physical training, including weapons, strength-building, running, etc. Mages would choose which paths of magic to pursue, although much of their training would have to be handled as adults in apprenticeships arranged with mage guilds outside of the orphanage when the orphan turns 18. Those training for the rogue path would not be taught actual thieving skills, but they would learn about stealth, gymnastics, scouting techniques, and how to evade capture. Vocational training is simply learning how to work in a trade, such as blacksmithing or carpentry. Not sure if we will have any players go down those paths, but they are open to those who don't want to train their student characters for the life of an adventurer.

There are no restrictions on races, but it would probably be best if we only had one or two of a given race per each category (student or teacher). I suppose that I'll be the headmaster and a student, but the former will only play a hands-on role when he has to, to give me a way of keeping things in order in-story without resorting to arbitrary methods ("rocks fall, everyone dies"). There can be trips away from the orphanage at times, but they have to be cleared by the headmaster, who is responsible for their safety. As this is in a public forum, I ask that you keep it all decent. Tasteful romance is fine (although not the real point of the RP), but please be mindful of what you post, especially since this involves characters under 18. I would imagine that most of these characters would be teenagers or getting close to it. Sort of like Teen Titans, if that helps.

Finally, this RP is a sort of remake of private one I had earlier with someone from this forum. As such, I will respect her wishes not to reuse certain elements or characters (or reuse them with minor tweaks). Specific rules (dress codes, conduct, consequences, etc) can be worked out before we begin the RP, as can anything else I missed here. With all that said, any takers?

Here's the main thread for the RP. We should establish some rules, a dress code for the school (it might vary by race, like humans might dress differently from kobolds), and hammer out any remaining details.

Sure thing. It's not a modern-day setting or "Harry Potter" sort of thing. More like a "D&D orphanage" sort of thing. And the kids are training to become adventurers (or learn a craft) one day.

Sounds good, I'll come up with a character one currently in here.

Very good. Now, we still need a set of rules for the orphanage and a dress code. I can think of some for starters, but I'd like input from everyone else.

Well, this being a d&d style Rp I'm suggesting we should have a coloured coat system or a badge system which signifies the grade/yearlevels.

Here are some basic rules I have worked out. Maybe we can work on a color-coding scheme, as suggested.

No footwear in the orphanage.

No fighting outside of training.

Lights out by 10, wake up at 5.

Boys and girls must stay in their own dorms at night.

Do not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.

Do not leave the orphanage without a pass.

Clean up your messes.

Do not destroy the property of the orphanage.

We also need to work out a schedule, come to think of it. As for the dress code, I'm thinking that it varies a bit from race to race. Goblins and kobolds would probably not use as much as, say, humans or elves. So, there would be a relatively low (but still decent!) minimum. And it would vary between the boys and girls, of course. There could be a range of options too.

For a schedule I'd suggest something like this

Morning
Physical training early in the morning
Breakfast at sunrise
Clean up
Practical lessons: swordsmanship, martial arts, fitnesss, emergency medication
Day
Lunch
Clean up
Tertiary lessons: maths, English, magic
Personal time
Dinner
Clean up
Sleep

Also, are all the characters in the same class or group, it'd be confusing if they were all separated.

That's a good start, but it could use some refinement. As for the "same class or group", the answer would be a bit more confusing. Mages, warriors, and "thieves" would logically have some different classes at times, but they could be part of the same overall social group. Also keep in mind that boys and girls have different dorms.

Here's a version of the rules. I found a good "parchment" background for it:

Ok how about this

6:00: early morning fitness
7:00: breakfast and role call
8:00: clean up and bathing
8:20: physical training as a group, everyone should be at the same level of fitness, they would learn martial arts in the areas of swordsmanship and hand to hand combat, general fitness and practical problem solving. the only people exempt from physical training are the seniors who sometimes instruct training.
9:20: rest/time to socialise with the other students
10:20: tertiary lessons, each differing for the varying classes, the juniors will each learn maths and English in a group, mid years are in seperate classes based on their class, seniors sometimes teach classes, if not they have an apprenticeship with one of the masters (teachers assistant and trainee under the master) or they do personal studying.
1:20: lunch, students are selected to cook each week.
2:20: practical lessons based on classes, juniors are introduced to each class and at the end of the year they are allowed to choose one. Midyears take specific classes based on their profession, seniors are the same and sometimes teach classes.
3:20: rest
4:00: clean up orphanage
5:00: personal time for socialising and personal study.
7:00: dinner
8:00: clean up and bathing
9:00: personal time until bed

@HumanMusic

I'd like some additional input from other players, but that looks a lot closer to how it should probably go. Keep in mind that the exact level of training and classes would vary by age as well. Also, since this is a fantasy world "English" would not be a language, as there is no England. "Common language" or just "language classes" might be better. So, with some tweaks (and pending input from the others), it might looks like this:

(I can put it in "parchment" form later)

5:00 am - 6:00 am: Morning Routines and Basic Fitness
6:00 am - 7:00 am: Breakfast and Roll Call
8:00 am - 8:30 am: Clean up and Bathing
8:30 am - 9:30 am: Physical Training
9:30 am - 10:30 am: Break time (massage therapy too?)
10:30 am - 1:30 pm: Academic Lessons (language, math, history, etc)
1:30 pm - 2:30 pm: Lunch
2:30 pm - 3:30 pm: Path-specific classes (mage, warrior, thief, vocational)
3:30 pm - 4:00 pm: Break
4:00 pm - 5:00 pm: Clean up orphanage
5:00 pm - 7:00 pm: Free time
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm: Dinner
8:00 pm - 9:00 pm: Clean up and bathing
9:00 pm - 10:00 pm: Personal time until bed.

And there would be weekend schedules and holidays too.

Perhaps if this was a small dragon or draconic humanoid, and not a full-power dragon. If it is the latter, it would be vastly overpowered.

@Aristocles No matter what he's going to be weak, he'll be anywhere between fourteen to seventeen years old, so he won't be anywhere near fully grown as a dragon. Technically he wouldn't be full sized at all.

Done, this is fine... right?

Name: Guy Reece

Race: Human

Age: 14

Appearance: A child around 5"8 with relatively short, dark hair, not a buzz cut, the top is just a bit longer which doesn't seem to respect the laws of gravity. His body has a strong build, not from actual fitness but from constant farming, chopping wood and shipping stones on a farm. His skin is tanned but still retains his light shade, cuts line up his arm from abuse, his hands are tough with blisters and scars. Guys' face is red from constant work in the sun, his eyes grey and tired, his skin rubbery. His face isn't what you would call handsome, he is average looking with not much sexual appeal. His clothes appear baggy, dull and worn, his shirt laces up and almost looks like a vest, his shorts drop to his thighs and nearly go below his knees, strapped sandals can be seen on his feet and appear near breaking apart, however, the sandals seem to work perfectly fine even during physical training.

Abilities: He is able to endure most pains and can lift his own weight, he does not have much magical prowess, only understanding basic uses and laws. Swordsmanship, hand to hand combat and practical problems is his forte, he excels in physical training being eager and able to pass through fitness. While being physically capable he is knowledgeable in language and history as well, however, maths is his worst subject, he isn't unable to solve problems, he just needs a few fingers to get past multiplication and division.

Background: He was born into an abusive family which owned a farm, rather than being treated as a child he was made to work as a slave, fighting through the heat and the rain, his only joy was hiding in the fields and playing with the forest sprites. He ran from the farm after learning about the orphanage, the orphanage which trained children to become adventurers, it was a second chance, a chance to leave his life of slavery and farm work.
