A Cold August Day

9:00 AM, August 6th, 1210PW. 34 Degrees Fahrenheit. Raining.
The Queen was spotted at a party late last night wearing a crinoline. Fashion outlets are in an uproar, with actress Elissa Ardvulf, starring in The Wondrous Laboratory (coming out Summer 1211), issuing the statement, "I don't care if the Queen herself wears one of those horrid old things. Crinolines? Please, I don't need one of those to look good, and neither does anyone else, Queen Milla included. They're not worth the fire hazard." - The Unoctoc View

Far to the south in the grey, overcast skies, a series of red streaks through the clouds just above the horizon. The Deadlands are still being pummeled a thousand miles away and the stream of dust returning to Earth brings a pleasant orange glow to match that of the sunrise an hour earlier. Soft pattering sounds pop in and out of existence as small droplets of rain splash onto the corrugated steel roof over the Institute train stop, with mud visibly forming in the grassy woods on either side of the railroad tracks and the path away from the station and the scent of petrichor sweetening the air.

The first load of newcomers steps off of the train in single file and wanders down the path away from the station, as per the instructions on the acceptance letters sent to each applicant. The new students and teachers are all of various ages and shapes and sizes, though they're predominantly human of normal size and shape. A few chimeras walk behind the rest of the crowd, opting to keep to themselves, and a single sapient Monster in the form of a small, blue-grey, four-eyed housecat walks to the left side of the line of students, sticking to the muddied grass in favor of the gravel that would irritate its footpads.

Upon realizing that he's still rather dry, one of the older men in the procession looks up to the sky to discover that the rain is being parted above the path, and a bemused look crosses his face. I suppose this is what Magic is..., he thinks to himself, having never been exposed to it before.

In fifteen minutes, the procession arrives at the frontal gates of Mordhaben's Institute for Aspiring Mages and enter the courtyard for the opening ceremony. The gates are wrought iron in an ornate floral pattern, twenty feet wide and twelve feet tall. In the center of the gate is a plate of thin metal with the words 'For the Sake of Progress' cut into it in cursive text, and upon arrival, the gates open on their own, revealing a circle twenty meters wide paved with flagstones, surrounded on all sides by the most beautiful flowerbeds and miniature trees in the country. The administrative building front steps are on the far side of the courtyard, with a podium standing at the top, and the walls of the administrative building wrap around the entire courtyard to meet the iron fence.

Lester Astrante

Lester had arrived criminally early to the school, and now he was impatiently waiting for the staff to start the opening ceremony.

He tapped his foot incessantly against the floor as he looked at his clock with an irritated look in his face.

Scratching his twitching, left eyebrow, the man spoke up, "Do they not have any sense of responsibility? Who is the idiot who is in charge of all this? I wish to speak to his manager." Of course, his.... jokes were without an audience. Good thing since they were bad.

Socializing was not at all his thing, and he'd very much rather speak with someone who was as smart as him. Finding someone like that would most certainly not be easy, however, and he'd rather much be the one approached than the one approaching them.

And so, he reached for the card holder on his tight, took the cards out of it and started shuffling them in his hands. This time, there were no annoying brats asking him if he was a magician. He was, but not the kind they wanted. At least, not full time.

He tried not to let is show.... but he was nervous. Even more so with what her mother had said in the morning as he was getting ready to leave.

As he brushed his hair in front of the mirror this morning, his mother commented on how much he reminded her of his father. Not really the kinda thing you want to hear the very same day you're going into a military school, honestly. At least, one with ties to the military.

"Mars"
Despite being a Chimera Mars makes his way forward, he has always been fond of these sort of ceremonies. He ends up rather near to Lester.

He mutters quick greetings to the people near him then stops talking. Wonder how much longer till the ceremony starts.
Hopefully soon it's rather cold.
He thinks to himself, rubbing his hands together made slightly painful by the scales rubbing one against each other.

Unless someone came up to him and was way to friendly for their own good he doubted he would talk to anyone during this ceremony, he ends up filling his head with him leaving his current parents said they knew he would do well and make them proud but that's it.

Of course he didn't have to be here it was a bit warmer in the building, but like mentioned he's fond of these kind of ceremonies.

Eventually he just starts thinking of ideas of things he may want to try making.

Azerus

It was finally here. The day Azerus had long since been waiting for with both equal parts excited anticipation and anxious fear. His whole life was about to change and irregardless of the hardships ahead, it still had to be for the better than the ones passed.

Even though these were more his type of people Azerus still did his best to appear normal and blend in, more so out of habit then anything else. While he could change his form to many things he could never truly appear or pass as a pure human. There was always some form of heavy evidence to identify his true heritage.
As he walked with the group, silently amongst the shadows in the back, a heavy coat and an innocently placed backpack concealing his features and shoulder spikes, he curiously eyed every monstrous feature he could find amongst the other students.

He kept his head low during the trip but paused and looked up to momentarily admire the words scrawled into the gate.
'For the sake of progress.'
"Who's progress and to what ends?" He said softly to himself. Azerus was not beyond admiring the beauty of the impressive flower array that lay on the other side as he waited impatiently for the ceremony to begin.

Mars

Mars really is getting cold, he sighed and pulled out what looked like a small copper cylinder with a blue line. It was half filled.
"I suppose I have more then enough energy and I do need warmth after all." He mutters under his breath as he picks up a stone. Azerus saw this most likely directly or maybe through peripheral vision. Mars then holds the stone a bit in front of himself. The blue line on the cylinder decreases slightly and he ends up with a warm rock. "Much better." He places the cylinder back into a small sack over his shoulder he took it from. He really is contemplating leaving, but he supposes it would just be plain rude at this point.

((I'm not trying to double post, but I'd rather keep Mars's actions updated through out the ceremony.))

• Mordhaben's Institute, the Courtyard •

Mallory hated the rain.

What a way to set the scene, she thought; of all days, it just had to start pouring down on the day she was officially admitted into Mordhaben's Institute. Although the clouds were not as grey and the rain was not as heavy, eventually Mallory's hair would go from extra fluffy to extra damp from all the rainwater that it had collected. She was frowning all the way through her walk to the school courtyard, regretting the time she had spent to make herself look more decent and less dead than usual.

But then again, Mallory's hair was really just a bunch of dead skin cells that formed a strange white mop on her head. In an interesting school full of very interesting people, something like that was the least of her worries. She was excited; meeting all of these diverse people in an environment she had never experienced before was certainly something to look forward to. Mallory smiled, the accidental hint of maliciousness on her lavender lips likely scaring the few people who happened to catch sight of the look she had on her face at that moment.

The entrance ceremony seemed to be taking quite long to really get started, and Mallory was stuck in a crowd full of people she didn't know without anything to do to pass the time. Although she had zero problems having conversations with other people, as of now there was really nothing interesting she could talk about. But as she attempted to fish out some conversation starters from her head, Mallory caught sight of someone who did have something interesting to do to pass the time. Without a second thought, the girl bounced over towards the person shuffling cards in their hands.

That's a skillful hand you've got there! Mallory interrupted, that unintentionally shady smile creeping onto her face once again. You must be very committed, 'cause I sure wouldn't spend my time perfecting something like that.

--Esther--
Rainy days meant clouds, and clouds meant unclear skies. Without proper vision, it is harder to cast constellations... bad luck for a first day at military school. Esther was nervous, but knew better than to cower. She focused to keep a high head, a wide stance, and represent the prestige of the Voq family, that was her mission. She moved forward in the scattered cluster of students, trying to listen in their conversations. Collecting small bits of information on the school was the first task. She overhead a group of girls talking of the teachers being late. Unprofessional... its truly a unlucky day Esther thought. She scolded herself for not being more considerate, and rethought her conclusion. It must be an accident... a stars blessing to them. A common saying from Esthers village.
She weaved through the crowd of unfamiliar faces, trying to find possible friend. She dismissed every face she saw, judging each person from their apperance. Cmon... someone has to be suitable Then, one face stood out. Maybe it was the pale skin, maybe it was the purple eyes. Theyre was some familiarity that clung with the face, like a overwhelming sense of deja vu. She was busy talking to another student, so Esther turned her back and listened into their conversation.
Why does this feel so familiar..

As Azerus waited, like so many others, he scanned the crowd examining and judging his peers. Nearby some sort of reptilian hybrid with claws for fingernails was playing with what seemed to be a magical cylinder. It did little to hold his attention as small displays of magic and skill were subtly put on show and erupting all around him. Various students all attempting to show off and stand out.

Nearby one such student even decided to display his prowess by manipulating a pack of cards he had brought. This even attracted the attention of another. Azerus sighed loudly and rolled his eyes, continuing on scanning the crowd. Firstly he sized up all these individuals, subconsciously deciding who would be a threat to his ego. Secondly he sought the strong looking hybrids or monsters, making a mental note of anyone looking like they might be a threat physically.

These were not only his peers but also his competition. It was then in that thought that someone trying to get by bumped into him. Before he could even get a good look at the person his tongue lashed out like acid in his short temper.

"Hey, watch where the hell you are going!"

He spoke louder than needed. His words heavy with spite. While his sudden reaction fuelled by nerves and surprise, came out more fierce than he had intended. Still Azerus didn't back down or shy away from his actions.

Alexander Breckenridge

Alex stepped out of the Train, his eyes glancing in a manner that could nearly be described as erratic. He was taking in as much as he could, as quickly as he could when he noticed the rain above him, although rather far above him. It seemed like a considerate mage had decided to keep the rain away from the students, a kind gesture. Walking forward, Alex took care not to bump into anyone as he, and many others, trekked the long path from the train station to the Institute's campus. As he walked, Alexander's mind wandered, reminiscing on the multitude of stories he had heard from his Grandparents and Parents both about the School and the 'adventures' they had there. However, one story they all told repeatedly was the first time they saw Mordhaben's entrance, an Iron gate of indescribable beauty.

As the flock of Students walked further from the Train station, the Academy began to appear in sight, as well as the 'indescribable' gate, which from a distance, looked fairly plain, albeit large. However, as Alex continued to walk towards it, he began to see intricate, beautiful floral designs carved meticulously into the structures Iron. Alex felt a strong surge of familiarity, and wished his Mother was with him so he had someone he could excitedly whisper with. Alas, she was not, and so Alex simply observed the gate's beauty silently, only being more and more impressed with each step he took closer to it. Eventually, he was at the gate's entrance, reading the gate's elegantly carved inscription "For the Sake of Progress."

Alex watched, with a smile hidden inside his chest as the Gate opened itself for the Students, and walked in, immediately seeing the multitude of Flowers and walking to them. This time, he couldn't contain his joy and a gentle smile spread across his face as he split from the crowd a bit, taking a few moments to observe the Flowers, smelling them occasionally. After making his way through some of the Flowers closer to the Students, Alex decided to wait until after the Opening Ceremony to continue his quest to smell every type of Flower in the courtyard. Turning around, he walked back to the crowd of students he had momentarily strayed from.

Berke Bayamaar

Unlike some among the Chimera present, Berke didn't hesitate to get amidst the crowds, oblivious to the stares of those that might judge him. His Chimera features were mostly hidden underneath his clothes, so it wasn't immediately apparent that he even was one, but some people would still call him a Gorilla for reasons besides his heritage. He stood well above the heights of many of the human students, so he made quite the spectacle. Perhaps the biggest spectacle about him was the giddy grin that adorned his face as he took in the sights. Berke was basically a tourist in this city, and getting to attend this prestigious academy alongside so many people was just plain exciting. He didn't mind that the opening ceremony hadn't started yet, because he was having enough fun just being here.

However, his preoccupation with looking around was likely what caused him to accidentally bump into someone. The person he had bumped into definitely did not seem happy to be bumped, which seemed like a given, but this one seemed extra mad. "Oh, hey man, I'm sorry." Berke said sheepishly, though otherwise unfazed by the Chimera's caustic response. "I'm just so overwhelmed by this new experience. I'm Berke by the way. What's your name?" As far as Berke was concerned, this was the perfect opportunity to make a new friend, or as it would happen his first friend at Mordhaben's. He did not recognise the fact that this Chimera did not seem like he was terribly friendly, nor that he might still be angry that he bumped into him. He just stood there, blithely expecting to make casual conversation with this new person.

Azerus

Azerus found himself staring at the wide muscular chest of the chimera he just abused. 'How had he missed this lumbering giant?' Regret suddenly hit him like an electric shock running through his body as he nervously looked up to the guys face.
Relief swept over him as he was not greeted by anger or offence but instead a smiling face. Not one to argue when given a lucky break Azerus quickly put out his hand to greet Berke and introduced himself.

"Oh hey Berke, the names Azerus. Yea, pretty full on day. Ah, nice to meet you. How's things?"

Lester Astrante

A deathly pale girl approached Lester then, warranting a raised eyebrow from Lester's side.

"Albino? No... if that were the case then she'd be carrying an umbrella. Then just a shut in. How truly boring." The man thought to himself, before sighing.

Stopping the shuffling of the cards and hearing what the girl had to say, Lester could just chuckle and then smirk, shaking his head then.

Obviously, the girl was hoping to trigger some sort of reaction in Lester. The smile on her face said as much. However, two could play the same game.

"'Tis a good thing you did not try. You do need a certain level of gray matter to be able to do this after all." He then lifted the deck of cards beside his head, showing the back of them to the girl. "I can try teaching you... I like to think that I am a good teacher, even for uncultured monkeys."

Lester awaited the girl's response then, intrigued by what sort of answer would she give him. It was not everyday that people thought they could out-insult him, even if the girl knew not what she was getting herself into.

Mallory cackled.

It was one of those moments when Mallory hadn't actually intended to provoke anyone in the first place; she felt sincere curiousity towards this person's strange pass time activity, though her way of speech seemed to have directed the conversation into more hostile territory. The boy didn't look unsettled by her comment at all however, eventually retorting back with his own sense of wit. So he was going to play that game, Mallory thought. Well, it was much more entertaining than standing in the rain with nothing to do and no one to talk to.

Maybe you should put yourself to the test, then, she chuckled, her smile now looking genuinely devious. Teach me your cultured ways, O great and honourable teacher.

Mallory wasn't sure if she even wanted the opening ceremony to start now. Or about what grey matter even was.

Mars

Mars decide to look around and eventually watched what must of been a large chimera. His monster features were mostly hidden so Mars guessed he must be a gorilla chimera for no other reason then size. He noticed he bumped into another chimera and noticed the hostility, then the potential fear, then the relief of the gorilla not being angry. Hmm... The gorilla seems friendly... But the other... Well he seems hostile... Also a bit... Cowardly?
I'm not sure, at least watching people gives me something to do...
He turns away looking at other people.

The Opening Ceremony

9:07 AM, August 6th, 1210PW. 35 Degrees Fahrenheit. Raining.
"So I finally tested my theory out. Turns out you can safely regrow someone's entire spine, provided it's done within five to seven minutes after removal."
"Wait, what!? What the hell is going on in that workshop of yours?"

-Transcript excerpt from Mordhaben's Institute medical science meeting notes, 823PW.

The doors to the side wings of the Administrative Building finally open up, interrupting any ongoing conversations, and a stream of roughly five people each in the Mordhaben's ceremonial uniform steps out and slowly walks around the student body along the side paths. A series of chairs appears at each side of the bottom of the steps to the front door and they all take a seat, their burnt orange half capes turning to a dull brownish color with each raindrop, and their black cloth caps and military greatcoats hiding the splotches of dampness. One, near the center, is wearing a burnt orange hood, and his head is wrapped in bandages, with his eyes obscured by a pair of black aviation goggles. He casts a hand upwards and the rain stops. Or, rather, it seems to stop - any student who looks upwards would see the rain splattering and pooling upon an invisible ceiling. He waves his hand once more, and from beneath the administrative building's portico a large sheet of old, weather beaten canvas drops down in front of the podium, with a weight at the bottom. A series of straps throws itself over the weighted pole, keeping the screen secured.

With low, crunching footsteps, a gigantic, nine-foot tall first-generation Chimera in a business suit and a much smaller, more humanoid later generation chimera with the same tail step out from around the side of the canvas. A projector hidden somewhere in the back of the courtyard throws an image across the canvas screen. It's just Mordhaben's logo, flickering, with some odd bars and film artifacts popping in and out of the image. The two Chimeras stand off to the side as they address the audience - the hulking lobsterlike one opened its insectoid incisors and began moving what passed as a mouth, and some sort of sound came out that one could assume was an attempt at speech.

"KKKkKKclllkclk. Tschchkk TkTkTkTk CRKlak. Ack, cakaaack, CLK'k," and such similar lines spouted from it. It sounded more like someone shaking a box full of plastic clapper toys than like any kind of animal speaking, but the smaller Chimera standing alongside the larger one nodded and began translating much more loudly after a few seconds. "Welcome to Mordhaben's Institute for Aspiring Mages. I am Administrator Boorkat Malkin, and this is my assistant, Katrice. Due to my speech difficulties, we have prepared a short film, which will serve to inform you all of why we're here and what will happen next. Please do not speak too loudly lest you disrupt the viewing experience for others. Mr. Barnham, if you would..."

The Administrator and his assistant moved down the flight of stairs to take a seat on the ground at the bottom. Crustacean tails as large as theirs apparently made it impossible for them to use backed chairs of any sort. The canvas screen flickered, and what would be the very first motion picture many students (particularly those not from major cities) had ever seen looped over the top of the canvas and jittered into place on the screen in shades of black and white.

Over the black square loudspeakers attached to the sides of the administrative building came a lively, friendly tune. Audio quality was as high as could be expected for a vinyl spool, but it was by no means bad. Peaceful still shots of human cities panned across the screen in sequence: one of a small house, with the family patriarch carrying a young child out to retrieve a newspaper - one of a restaurant filled with people, with the shot focused on a group of friends laughing as they drink - one of a park full of people and chimeras walking their pet dogs, virehounds, and blundcats as children play with a frisbee in the background - amongst others. A narrator speaks with a perfect transatlantic accent over the music.

"Peaceful society is a sacred thing. People have, after thousands of years, almost mastered the art of living together happily and without conflict. Children can grow up with their parents and their siblings. Young people can go to school and get an education. Adults can get jobs doing the things they enjoy, and perhaps eventually find the person they love and start a new family of their own."

The film shifts to patriotic scenes of soldiers running through an obstacle course, their thin steel helmets loosely bouncing atop their heads as they run. They pull their rifles to their shoulders and throw themselves to the ground upon reaching a line of sandbags, and the camera zooms in on one small, scraggly human man with a look of absolute determination on his face. He fires his rifle several times and the image cuts to one of rounds punching holes in a thinly painted tin target plate.

"Over the millennia, it has been the job of young, strong people like yourselves to protect our communities so that others can continue living happily. These soldiers are necessary for the continued existence of all we hold dear. But they are not enough alone."

As the music shifts to a darker, more mysterious tune, a scene of four shadowed humanoid figures walking up a hill and away from the camera appears. One of them has a thin, curved ceremonial sword at his hip. The camera slowly rises over the hill, and on the other side, a burning town complete with sounds of sporadic gunfire and distant screams can be seen. The shadowed figures reach the top of the hill. "This is what happens when our armies fail. This is real footage from the destruction of the village of Vivat, on the southeast outskirts of the Unoctocan Empire. When the alert was raised, the Empire sent out an expeditionary force to protect Vivat from a Monster feeding frenzy, but the expeditionary force found itself overwhelmed and quickly crumbled as they tried to evacuate the town's citizens amidst the chaos."

The music ends. Suddenly, a black cloud sweeps across the ground and into the town from all directions. Every building turns black, every window darkens, and the sounds of mayhem stop. Two of the shadowed figures turn to one another and seem to be speaking to one another. One shouts at the other and points at the camera, then at the burning village, as the other's face twists into an expression of absolute horror. The four turn their backs on the camera and raise their palms toward the village, just as the black shadow across the place sweeps to the center of the town, slowly returning color to the place as it gathers itself up. Something extremely bad is happening there, and the four shadowed figures take a combat stance. Ripples of force erupt from their hands, shattering the air as they fly towards Vivat, followed by a trail of blooming flowers and grass spilling upwards from the ground. The town crumbles as it's struck, revealing a shining black orb perhaps twenty meters across forming in the town square.

The orb forms a mouth and screams horribly, like thousands of men burning to death - the only sound since the end of the music - and it erupts into hundreds of thousands of shards of broken black glass when the ripple of magic flows through it. The scene cuts to black as the narrator continues.

"A Mage task force was instructed to bring along a cameraman when they went to offer their support to the expeditionary force, in order to record the humanitarian efforts of the military in reconstructing the town and healing the injured townspeople. The Mages were late, and had they come any earlier, they would have been caught in the Shade's cloud, resulting in their certain deaths. The best the task force could do was destroy the Shade's body and purify the corrupted dead before it became something worse."

The black image is coated with a growing and increasingly ornate white pattern, which then opens up from the center into a scene of a scrap of text-filled paper being signed by a hand in a business suit. The scene cuts to a zoomed out view of the Unoctocan Parliament's Green Room - a huge, round place with green floral wallpaper and wooden side panels along the bottom few feet of the walls, with a domed ceiling. A series of six round wraparound desks filled with hordes of people in suits wraps around the room along the bottom of the image, and a man instantly recognizable as the Czar is at a desk in the center, signing a new bill into law.

"In response to this tragedy, the Unoctocan Empire decided to formally recognize Mordhaben's Institute for Aspiring Mages, amongst other, smaller academies elsewhere, as an official training ground for Imperial Mages - independent magic users trained in The Way whose duty it is to deal with threats to the citizens of the Empire long before they can cause another disaster on the scale of the destruction of Vivat."

The scene shifts once more to the Mordhaben's Institute logo and slogan.

"You are the seventh class to come to the Institute since the signing of the Imperial Mage Educational Funding budget bill. There have been severe injuries in that time, and sixteen students have returned home in coffins. In that time, over two hundred have safely graduated, with more on the way. Education here at the Institute will be rigorous and at times extremely dangerous. Students are required to take part in weekly outings under the guidance of either a staff member or a professional Mage as well. It is not for the faint of heart, and if you do not accept the risk, telephones are available in the entrance hall, and the train back to the Imperial City of Unoctoc Station will depart in two hours. Otherwise, breakfast will be served in the Cafeteria, followed by the beginning of the entrance exams. Good luck!"
Finally, the canvas screen rolls up, and an older human student in a black military uniform standing in front of the Podium addresses the crowd.

"Cafeteria's this way. Follow me."

He turns away and walks through the Administrative Building doors.

Celeste Azur

Cafeteria

It was the opening ceremony but Cel chose not to attend it. He was in the institute for two years now and most of the things they talked about in the ceremony remained the same. The difference was in the footage they showed the students to spur them on their studies, make them motivated to learn magic and provide service. He'd heard them, all right. And despite the beautiful, pleasant cold weather brought on by the rain, he wasn't about to interact and be with a lot of people.

Plus, there were always new students. He didn't want to make a bad impression of the academy, them seeing an upperclassman be unpleasant. They might get the wrong idea, and he was the perfect person to elicit that kind of judgement.

So, Celeste was in the cafeteria, eating at a snail's pace - more like slower than a snail's space. There were a few people in the cafeteria and most of them were the staff. He didn't mind them. They didn't engage in small talk and wouldn't judge him for being the way that he was. He'd just grab and eat food and they were done with him. Easy.

But, he heard noise coming from the direction of the cafeteria's entrance. New students , he thought. He scooted farther away from where they would arrive, albeit he was just moving slightly into the corner part of the bench and table he was eating on. He checked himself and nodded, nothing flashy again today. Surely with his sedate beige long-sleeved shirt and loose black pants was nothing too eye-catching.

He couldn't have another person get the wrong idea about him again. Oh wait, he's doing it again, living in his head, thinking too much. Cel sighed and waited for what's next. Misunderstood or left alone? Which one would it be this time?

Berke Bayamaar

Berke was pleased to see the conversation turn positive so quickly. He had well and truly made his first friend at Mordhaben's. "Things are fun, Azerus." He began. "Just overwhelmed by it all, like I said. It's my first time away from home, let alone my first year at Mordhaben's. I'm from a little town called Altay a way aways from here. It's quite different from this place-" Mid sentence, the main building's doors alerted everyone that the opening ceremony was about to start. "We should probably pay attention to this, yeah?" Berke said to Azerus before turning his eyes to the main event.

Berke was most surprised to find both Chimera and Monsters among the staff present at the ceremony. While Altay was a place of tolerance, he had always been told the outside was quite different, so it was strange to find non-humans in such prominent positions. Maybe the outside was more tolerant than everyone had thought? The staff decided to show them a little film to induct them into the school. At first, Berke thought they were in for a pleasant experience, but then the film got really dark and disturbing in the middle. It made him think about just how sheltered he had been back in Altay. But the ultimate message was one of hope, and that was something that Berke could get behind. He had come here for no other reason than to make himself useful just like those Mages and soldiers.

With the end of the film, and them being ushered to the cafeteria, Bekre turned to his new buddy Azerus. "Want to sit with me in there, buddy?" He asked him. Soon enough, Berke expected to make a whole slew of friends here, but for now, he'd stick with the one he already partially knew.

Azerus didn't sit still, remain quiet or pay full attention. He continually fidgeted around on the spot while mumbling obvious observations, usually at the expense of another Chimera's features.

He had grown up surrounded by awful prejudice and hateful racism for what he is. Yet all his hardships didn't make him any more sympathetic to others of his kind, instead only further instilling a deep seeded resentment for those like him. He had long since convinced himself that suffering was necessary and all of his kind was deserving of it. He looked down at his own type with the same condescending spite and malice that others had treated him with. He cursed monsters for their interbreeding but hated hybrids the most. They were the abominations in between that blurred the lines. But most of his resentment fell to creatures like the one before him. Those that didn't know first hand of the darkness of humans hearts. The isolation of exile or the humiliation of subjugation.

"Yea sure bud, I'll meet you in there." he lied trying to ditch the oaf. He surely didn't want to upset the guy but he hardly wanted to get stuck with him either. As Azerus entered the square room he feigned interest in the food as he searched for a particular type of people. His people, arrogant, confidant, prideful, popular, human.

Azerus picks the least damaged tray after eyeing it with a clear disdain. Slowly he makes his way around the buffet being very selective and picky with his food turning his nose up at much of it. He deliberately picks food not near Berke but his chances of avoiding the small giant grow slimmer and slimmer by the minute as he struggles to find an in with anyone else.

Mars enjoyed the presentation he watched with interest despite mostly seeing it before. He rather rushed into the cafeteria excited for at least some extra warmth. He noticed the big gorilla before and the other one. He knew to avoid the other one, he could tell he would have issues with him. Obviously he grabs some food, then after searching for a few minutes, he eventually just decides to sit near someone who didn't look at a chimera with disdain. He knew most wouldn't but the first one he sees not look at him with a weird look when he got near them, which was Celeste. He didn't sit directly next to him, but still close, he nods to him, "Hey," he mutters under his breath.

Celeste Azur

Cafeteria @Eragon

Celeste continued eating as the new students and staff piled inside the cafeteria. He was in a non-noticeable enough place so he thought he'd be able to avoid interaction with the new students. He was wrong but he didn't realize it yet. He picked at his food and sighed. Another year of grueling classes and drills, he knew he had only a few years left until he graduated but still, it was not something he'd wanted to do everyday.

Of course, graduating from the institute meant working, facing monsters on a regular basis - which was what happened to him when he was younger, of course unable to fight and nearly dying. He proceeded to think about how these freshly picked mages-to-be would perform in the tests. He shuddered from remembering it.

Unknown to him, there was a lizard-like chimera that sat near him. He daydreamed for a few minutes, not realizing he was spoken to. Finally, he snapped out of his head and startled when he saw there was someone with him. Oh no, he's going to think I have something against him being a chimera, why'd I have to flinch?

Cel straightened up and tried to recover from his mistake. It could still be salvaged, he hoped. He had to do it fast or he'll get distracted again and drift off. "Um, hey. Were you talking to me?, he shuffled and cleared his throat, "I was thinking about something there and I didn't hear you."

Would that be enough to un-offend the person? Was un-offend even a word? Cel thought, starting to get lost in his thoughts. Somebody needs to snap him out of it, and quick!
