Queens

He floated, several thousand feet in the sky and watched New York City and its 5 Boroughs go on about its businesss. Even since his "incident" he was nothing more but a public menace and his attempts to stay low didn't help people forget what had happened earlier in the year. Yet in recent days as a small group of heroes went about their business in doing what they can to deal with the rioters throughout New York, he did nothing... nothing but watch and stay silent.

Perhaps he should help them? Maybe meet them? Or maybe just stick to the Brooklyn streets he has come to know. Maybe this fantasy of doing the right thing, using his powers for good was just something his uncle sprouted but with no real truth to them. Flying was easy, his strength, easy but trying to concentrate, to keep his senses clear... that took effort. There was no use in being bombarded with all the random sounds if he wasn't going to do anything. Superman, or at least that is what they called him just floated away trying to be at peace, using his powers to give him a private moment where the world below went on and he was away from it until...

Explosions.

It was loud, too loud to ignore. With a focused gaze of intensity John turned his head in the direction of Queens and with a concentreated effort he could see smoke rising up through the air. He paused for a moment, hesitating but as the fires scorched the earth and the cries of people now filling the air Superman made up his mind. Hurling himself forward the thin air exploded around the Kryptonian as a sharp sonic boom echoed throughout the New York sky.

Racing through the air, Superman had closed the distance within seconds as he planted himself into the ground with authority. "This was no accident" The alien thought. As people scrambled away in the streets in panic or watched in confusion on what had just occurred, Superman kept his composure and took a deep breath before exhaling a strong burst of air over towards the flames to put them out. As the flaming embers died Superman watched with a quiet realization that there were people inside the building and their charred remains were all that was left of them. As the gathered crowd watched the dark caped individual take out the flames, there was sudden mixture of emotions.

Scanning the stunned crowd Superman addressed the crowd with a strong, clear tone though it came out more like a demand "Did anybody see what happened? Who did this?".Nobody uttered a word and Superman could see the uneasiness in their postures and facial expressions leaving the caped figure with nothing...until in his observation his ears caught the sense of a truck speeding away. Darting his head to the side and down the street, Superman watched as a truck speed with reckless abandon. "Something is not right" he silently thought. The Kryptonian lifted himself off the ground in preparation to move, he would go to confirm his suspicions.

"Alright, let's be careful this time" John reminded himself before extending his arms forward, willing his 6'5 frame through the air with incredible speed and force leaving the crowd below to cover their eyes from the winds generated from the speeding alien. Rapidly closing the gap, Superman focused his vision on the speeding truck as he peered inside resulting in his suspicions confirmed, the truck was carried the weapon responsible for the sudden attack. Knowing it was up to him to stop these criminals Superman raced ahead before the speeding truck before planting himself in the ground, several feet away. Superman smirked slightly, watching the truck's passengers confused reactions as the truck had no where left to go but collide into the Kryptonian. Superman had stood firm and emerged unscathed as the front of the truck had caved in completely and come to a complete stop, leaving the passengers inside immobile from the violent interaction. Casually walking to the side of the truck or what remained of it, Superman ripped off the side door and pulled the individuals out one by one, placing them before him. Folding his arms the Kryptonian stared down the individuals with enough intensity that if looks could kill, these men would be dead but fortunately for them, they still had some uses.

"Alright... so which one of you is going to talk first?"

It wasn't his debut as a fighter of crime, but Preston believed that his debut in the news was just as good. He had been fighting here and there before the rise of Metahumans, left for a while as they boomed, and now came back to a world where people needed someone with his kind of power, authority, and set of morals.

But he wasn't Preston now, he was the Emerald Knight, the Green Lantern to this sector of known space, and he had to act like it.

Preston flew down from the smokey building in a hurry. Everyone had been evacuated from the crumbling tower of concrete, and the villain who was responsible for trying to kill all of the people inside was apprehended. Now all was left was to take care of collateral damage. He spun around and faced the building. With his right fist pointed forward, he concentrated hard to create a construct. Using the power of hard light, Preston created a large tube, much taller than the building it was being built around, and left more than enough space for the building to fall apart safely with no worries of debris flying out and hurting bystanders.

It was more work than he expected to hold the massive construct together to keep the building debris from spreading out. He almost didn't make it. The rubble fell down and out, pushing aganst the green walls. Preston used all of the will he could muster to keep it together, and once the remnants of the building seemed to be completely motionless, he let go of the construct and curled forward. His breath was deep and heavy. He needed to go back to OA some time and train some more to work on weight and keeping larger constructs together. For now, he needed to show the people of Hub City that the Emerald Knight was a force for good.

Another breath was forced out as he stretched back upright, looking around at the crowds that had been forming slowly after the rubble had stopped and the dust had settled. His shoulders were brought out as far as he could move them, his chest puffed out just a little. Surely his skintight bodysuit made of energy made everyone see his true proportions, but maybe he could alter his costume to make himself a little bigger? There was no time for that.

He looked around for a news truck. Surely a falling building and a villain attacking was more than enough to warrant someone from some news crew to step in and report on what was going on. Hopefully his little tip to channel 52 before things started was enough to get some people in on all of this super action.

"So," Cassandra Mckenzie crossed one leg over the other, a practiced smile on her face. "You were the one responsible for stopping the Russian terrorist earlier today, is that correct?"

"Yes," Preston nodded, his face hidden by a green mask. "Though his origins don't really matter to me. He came out here today to hurt people, and I put a stop to him and did what I could to keep things from getting worse." He was doing his best to sound confident, but internally, he was so excited to be on the news.

Though her flawlessly sculpted crimson nails tapped against the screen of her phone, her azure eyes never once left the man garbed in green. "Were you also the 'anonymous caller' that tipped off Channel 52 just beforehand?"

Preston chuckled, his head swaying from one side to the other. "I can't say. However, I'm glad that you're here to report on all this. People need to know what's going on, and you're doing a job just as good as mine by giving them that info." He tried hard to warm up to her and the people possibly watching. He needed to make sure that he was on good terms with the law here on earth, even if being a vigilante like himself was illegal.

"I see," she chuckled, choosing to drop the matter of his identity for the time being. "And what name shall we affix to you? Do you have something you would prefer to be called, like our resident Wizardess does?"

"Wizardess?" He asked in an amused tone. In truth, he had no idea who this woman was talking about, but he had to play it like knew who she was. "I'm a servant among the stars, miss, I wander where I'm needed. If there was a name for me, I suppose you could call me the Emerald Knight." He was careful in his tone. He wasn't sure if she or the people watching would believe if he said he was from the stars, so he continued the same haughty and jovial tone to suggest that it was just a part of his gimmick.

He couldn't have the world go into a craze about the definate existance of extraterrestrial life, not just yet. He needed to prove to the world that he and others could save them all in a pinch, and that they really were ready to leave this little planet and see other ones. That was a long time from now, though.

Cassandra smirked when he revealed his chosen moniker, tapping the name down into her Galaxy S11. She then paused, seeming to consider his words for a moment. "A servant among the stars? Do you mean to say you've come from outer space? Are you an alien, then? And if so, then why have you come to Earth?"

He smirked just the right amount, he hoped. He had spent so much time practicing all of this that he really did hope he came off as calming and charming as he wanted to be. "I'm definately human. I'm here on Earth because this is where I'm supposed to be, and I'll show up when and where I'm needed."

"So you're a servant, and the Earth is where you're supposed to be, meaning that you have a boss. Very interesting," Cassandra replied, entering the information down into her phone. "And what is it that you aim to accomplish here? What is your ultimate goal and intention towards America? Towards the Earth?"

"Peace, of course. I work for peace and safety." He nodded. His unseen eyes shifted over to the woman's phone, hoping to take a peek at whatever she was typing. "I want to make a world where I'm not needed, and with my powers of creation, I firmly believe that it can happen." He looked around the penthouse he was in. Nice, classy. The Interview was nice, but he needed to keep himself interested in the conversation and the area around him.

Cassandra's phone was held at a horizontal angle, the screen entirely facing her. "I see. It is an undeniable truth that in the past four months the world has become a far more dangerous place."

"People possessing otherwordly, even outright impossible abilities have appeared, causing fear and panic among government officials and civilians alike. While some seem intend on using their 'powers' for good, their mere presence has forever changed how we look at the world we live in," she explained leaning slightly back in her patio chair. Reaching down to pad out a wrinkle in her dress, she quickly resumed the interview.

"That being said, is there a message you would like to send to these people? To the governments of the world, to the men and women on the street who might look upon you in fear?"

"You're not alone." His smile almost issued a challenge to the reporter before him. "The men, women and children next to you share your worries about the current state of the world, and that's okay. It's okay to be worried. Being strong means being strong together, trusting in one another and having the will to push to a better future. I want that future too, and you don't need super powers to make that happen."

He had been working on that quote for at least a month. After so many short quotes and monolouges of medium lengths, Preson finally decided on that one. She made it seem like that was it, asking if he had any words directly to any viewers at home, or readers of articles. He sat back and rested in silence, wondering what she was going to say to him next.

Cassandra smiled at this, a smile that almost said she had heard something similar before. "Very well then. In that case, how about you tell us a little bit about what you can do? What your powers are, things of that nature. I'm certain, after all, that people will be quicker to trust someone they can understand."

"Gladly." He smiled and shifted in his seat, bringing his left hand forward. He presented his ring on his closed hand to her, allowing her to get a great look at the piece of magical jewelery. "I harness willpower and use it to create objects out of solid light. Using will, I can also fly and travel into the unknown. A side effect of my powers is being incredibly strong, even I'm not using constructs to lift things." After a brief pause, he used his ring to create a one-to-one scale statue of the reporter who had invited him in, and rotated the statue around for her to see every side of it.

"I can create anything I can imagine, Miss. Anything at all." He wasn't going to mention his weakness to yellow, or the fact that he was useless without the ring. He wanted to make it seem like he had the power within himself, and the ring was simply a conduit for his internal energies. Even if he was trying to talk himself up, he needed to make sure no other villains could find this interview and learn everything about him.

Cassandra's eyes widened slightly when a statue of herself appeared in the middle of the penthouse roof. She observed it for a long moment as it rotated, unable to completely mask how impressed she was by the display. Finally easing back in her chair, she smiled. "Well, at least you have good taste."

"How did you gain these abilities?" She quickly continued the interview. "And is there a limit to them? How strong are you? How fast?"

"I can't exactly tell you how I got these abilities." He cracked a smile and let out a chuckle. "I don't want people seeing this and doing the incredibly dangerous things I did to get this power. As for how strong I am? About... five? Ten? Ten times stronger than a human? And Fast." He began to relax a little, and laughed a little as he tried to think of a way to explain the true limits of his speed. "You couldn't wrap your head around my speed when I'm on a beeline, sorry."

Closing her eyes, Cassandra chuckled, accepting that she wasn't going to get a clear answer from him. "Then how about your costume? Did you design it yourself, or was it given to you by someone? It's most certainly...distinct. And you wear a mask, too. I can only assume you have a civilian life outside of your work as a 'hero'."

"You also seem to be in your mid-twenties. College educated, perhaps?"

"I designed my suit." He clarified with a nod. "Well, not consciously, I suppose. I didn't talk to a tailor and tell them exactly what I wanted, it just came together and felt right."

He nodded once more as she continued to probe him, not focusing on his appearance and what could be derived from that. "Of course. I was a bit of a fan of space when I was younger, so I worked to make a careeer of that. With powers like this, I can get closer to our star than we ever thought possible." He was trying to give off simple answers, but he couldn't help but remember the time of his youth when he spent hours looking at the stars, inspiring his path and bringing him to where he was now.

Like every time before, the information he provided her quickly found its way to her phone "And, for those who will inevitably be curious...what is your height, weight, measurements? Just how much did your subconscious decide to squeeze into those delightfully tight pants?"

She leaned forward in her seat, a broad smirk now etched across her slender face.

The sweet smile he gave her was so obviously fake, but he meant no harm in it. He was, on some level, expecting a question like that.

"I'd say I'm about..." The statue of the reporter faded away as he brought his hand to his face, his finger tapping on his chin while he sat there in thought, mulling over facts he knew well. "About five feet, five inches, a hundred and twenty-some pounds. I wear thirty-thirty two pants, small or medium in most shirts, and I wear a size nine sneaker. I wasn't aware that your viewers were interested in making me a new suit. I'd ask for some adjustments on the pants, just a tad larger if possible."

Cassandra released a hearty chuckle at his last comment, all the while continuing to enter his response. Standing from her table, she rested a finger on the screen of her phone. "Oh, the public is always interested in getting to know their would-be heroes on a more...intimate level. But I digress. Do you have any closing statements for the public? Any words you would like to leave them with?"

"I've already given out my award-winning quote, but yes." He couldn't help but let out a small laugh at her reply. Of course people would want to know what his practices and preferences were, superheroes were the new celeberties. "The world is teeming with powered people, but you don't need powers to be a hero. Just go out there and do the right thing. If I'm not there, then the hero in you will be."

That should be it, Preston told himself. She asked for his closing statements, which meant the interview was now over. He closed the interview with a statement. Done. It. Over. With a sigh, he got comfortable in his seat once more. He waited a moment before looking over to the reporter who had been asking him all these questions about himself.

"I was worried for a moment that the call wasn't going to go through, I'll admit. But news or no news, lives were saved. Couldn't ask for more." He forced himself out of his seat with only minimal effort. He shot the reporter a small smile. With a small salute and a wave of a hand, he willed his body to be coated in a soft shade of green before he flew up into the air. He needed to go back home to Coast City, back to his friends and his for now secret life as an astronomer.

He had to admit, as much as some of her questions were a little too much for him, he enjoyed the interview. It was definately a conquered step of getting famous enough to unmask himself publicly and not have to worry about a secret identity.

He hoped that nothing too jarring would come of that.

-_-_-_-

It was late, nearly midnight, but Hex had already missed and forgotten his curfew. This whole vigilante thing was really getting to him, it was so exciting flitting across rooftops and cursing random muggers. Pads had no end of complaints about the girl who'd tried to rob an elderly man only to have her hair turn into a rope that strangled her until she passed out. He'd thought that particular twist had been clever, but nooo.

At least Pads couldn't complain about this one, a good old vampire scheme was outside Mr. Police Authority's jurisdiction.

Hex lurked in a darkened corner over the alleyway this particular vampire had chosen as their trap. He could see some of the appeal of vampirism, and maybe he would turn the other way if someone actually sought it out and knew what they were getting into, but this trick wasn't either of those; forceful recruitment from unaware pedestrians. It sent an uncomfortable tingle through his memory, something about Faerie wars.

Well, whatever the purpose, he was ending it tonight. And telling dad after, not before, because that was just asking for trouble. How did you even know about this? Is that what you've been doing when you stay out so late? You told me you were staying the night at Anna's! Her mom called! Well, sometimes voice modulation matrices came in handy? He sighed, he wished his dad would let him do this stuff more often, it was so much fun! Except for the slight issue where the demon almost broke his back with a chair, and that one siren who may have nearly drowned him, and the gnome with the explosives... but he'd learned his lesson! He was plenty capable! He just needed a few victories under his belt to prove it.

He smirked as he noticed movement in the alley. The fifth victim had just entered the scene; a young woman, headphones in, hood pulled up, eyes down - she'd never have seen her doom appraching if Hex hadn't been there watching.

A shadow pulled off from a dark corner, the woman missing it, but Hex had long ago spotted the vamp. He just needed to make sure this was the one causing trouble before starting something messy with any local clans. A quick click on his phone marked the beginning of his recording, assuring he'd have video evidence for any locals that got uppity. It was a just in case measure though, with any luck no one would know he'd been involved at all.

As the shadow crept up on the woman Hex got a better look at them, realizing it was a man with long dark hair and pale skin. The brief spalsh of moonlight also revealed something else; a gauntlet, the faintest glow of golden runes spread across the surface. Interesting, he thought, smirking, I'll be taking that. Just as the man's hand reached out for the girl a ball of bright pink light shot down from the roof tops and caught him in the face, sending him sprawling to the ground with a startled hiss. The woman jerked away, abruptly realizing someone on the roof, Hex, had just shot something in her direction, and then that there was a creepy weirdo behind her she hadn't noticed. It was no surprise she started running, disappearing back the way she'd came as Hex dropped down, landing with only the slightest of violet glows to mark the magic cushioning his fall.

"You know, willful spreading of infectious diseases is a crime. Probably. It's not very nice at least." He smirked at the infuriated expression on the vampire's face, fangs already bared as the man stood and dusted himself off.

"You will regret getting involved kid." Was the brilliant retort. Truly stunning how it managed to strike so much terror into him. Truly.

He laughed, already knowing that one vampire wasn't any match for him.

But then the vampire raised his magic gauntlet in Hex's direction, a jet of burning silver light lashed out towards him. He barely had time to barrier before the mystical energy was tearing around his shield and lighting up the alleyway with a harsh glow. When the light finally faded his barrier was only barely holding on, already disintegrated partially at the edges. "Ow," he muttered to himself, his hands a little singed from where he'd thrown them out to help focus his magic into the barrier. "Really, really ow."

And then, lo and behold, when he looked back up there was not just one vampire with some kind of overpowered magical energy canon, there were three. "This... may have been a mistake." He should really tell his dad about these things, the whole 'independence' and 'proving himself' schtick was totally going to get him killed.

---

After the shenanigans of the past couple weeks it was almost nice having a plain, boring night in Gotham once more. Just the rising peaks of the tall buildings, the smog above, a darkness that couldn't be shaken off...

ZZZZT

And of course a myriad of criminal elements. The light was gone in an instant from the alleyway as the thug dropped to the ground, lightly twitching. A small hum reverberated in the mask covering Grim's face as she withdrew a zip tie from her belt and bound the man's hands behind his back with practiced ease. She hadn't even broken a sweat tonight, just a steady rhythm of stalk and prey. Lifting her gaze from the slightly smoking perp in front of her to focus on the other person in the alleyway the vigilante merely tilted her head at the woman before her. Shaken. Afraid. Clutching her purse with both hands and chest heaving with adrenaline. That will happen when you're mugged and threatened at gun point.

Grim gestured to the mouth of the alley in a silent motion, where what faint light there was came through. The night was dark after all, not even the stars visible in the polluted sky, the only street light flicking. The woman hesitated, but the vigilante merely stayed still until she finally moved. As the woman stepped passed her Grim reached down, grabbing the mugger's pantleg and rather carelessly dragging him along behind them. He'd have some scrapes when he regained his mind enough to do more than whimper.

"I..." The pretty blonde trailed off, voice choking as Grim stepped up beside her on the sidewalk. Her eyes darted around, seeming to want to look at Grim but afraid. Most people in Gotham knew of the urban legend Grim, after all. The vigilante herself just dropped the leg of the criminal, voice modulator once more humming lightly as she waited with the stranger. Silence fell between them briefly. A small sob from the woman. Grim tilted her head but after a moment raised a hand up, the menacing glove placing very gently on the woman's arm in a form of comfort. It was important a person, after something like this, didn't feel alone. Important they knew they were safe, weren't just left behind not knowing what to do or why this happened. It's why Grim never left right away, not if she could help it. She may not be able to give them answers to why these things happened but she could at least do that.

The woman on the other hand wasn't sure what they were waiting for at first, at least until she heard sirens approaching. Grim lifted her masked gaze from her, watching the street corner. A surprisingly quick time from Gotham PD, but then again she was sure they were used to the voice modulated calls by now, and knew the alias of the one behind them despite Grim's status as a mere legend. It was only when the flash of lights were visible that Grim finally dropped her hand and stepped back. Before the blonde could say anything a small bang sounded out as the hookshot in Grim's glove penetrated near the roof of the building, and it took only a second for Grim to be on the roof and gone.

A few buildings away Grim finally stopped to check the time, a sigh rumbling out in a low menacing growl through her mask. She was late now, but it couldn't be helped sometimes. It wasn't like she could just ignore the screams of those in need - wasn't in her nature. Hadn't been for a long time. Resuming her route to Uptown Narrow however went off with little fanfair, no more distractions along the way.

Disappearances were being reported. All ages, all genders, just far enough away and just small enough that no one wanted to crack open the can of beans to deal with it, or didn't have the authority to cut away the red tape to do so. Bureaucracy. Law enforcement would never work for her - she'd be fired the first time she told her Captain to eat her ass for not doing enough.

That's alright though, Grim worked better alone.

There's the area. Uptown Narrow. Was that a glare? Grim paused only briefly before diverting her course to head towards the harshly glowing light coming from one of the side streets. She had expected at least a couple hours of stakeout, but maybe tonight was her lucky night after all.

It certainly wasn't for the poor schmuck down below, though.

Grim arrived in short time, ending up peering over the edge of the building to the scene down below. There was a young man, no more then a teenager, faced off against three men. Three men with - were their gauntlets glowing? Yep, definitely glowing. Gold at that. Interesting, but so much for a normal night.

The best defense against magic, Grim found so far at least, was not letting the other person use it. With that in mind she extended her hookshot, silently releasing the hooks manually to act as a grappling hook instead Quieter, which is what she needed. If she was lucky she could get all three of them at once. With it in place, Grim leapt from the building.

The hookshot did its job of keeping her slowed enough nothing broke when she landed hard on the man in the middle of the group, throwing all her weight on his shoulders to get him to the ground. As soon as she had landed Grim's hand, the one without the hookshot retracting, shot out to grab the arm of the one to her right, electricity immediately coursing through the palm of her glove. That just left...

Ah, the one who had reacted with surprising speed to get away. Almost supernatural reflexes, really.

Seriously, Grim hated magic a little.

---

A fourth shadow's appearance on the scene did no wonders for Hex's mounting apprehension. This would be dicey, he just needed- wham! The fourth shadow crushed the first man from above, an arm reaching out and shocking a second one. This was not good, clan warfare was- oh, not a vampire. Probably. The person was shrouded in shadows, but this was by skill, not magic. The obvious costume confirmed it; he was finally crossing paths with the infamous Grim.

He didn't have time to get excited about it though, because the third vamp was darting to the edge of the alley and scaling the wall with inhuman reflexes. "Ha! Get wrecked!" He giggled, amused at how fast the situation turned. He jumped, landing on a newly conjured bright pink platform, thin but easily holding his weight, and shaped like a hexagon. The platform rose quickly, just as fast as the vampire, and Hex threw his fists out; two hands made of violet light caught the man's ankles and yanked, suspending him over the alley for a second, just long enough for a concussive hex to smash into his face, before Hex dropped him to land a few feet from his other downed friends.

The platform dissipated too, and Hex fell in imitation of his earlier dramatic entrance into the alley; a puff of pink smoke marking the use of magic to cushion his fall. "Nice!" He called, once level with Grim again, running up to them with a bright and eager smile showing under his hood. "How'd you manage to sneak up on a vampire?! That's like, impossible!" Except not really, he had done it after all, but that was with magic, and this one didn't. As he spoke he picked out a few carved rocks from his pocket, tossing one in the direction of each of the three vampires; sleeping charms. Nighty night bat-suckers.

---

Underneath her mask, Grim's eyebrow twitched. It was starting to become a tick the more and more magic she ran into, and that was definitely magic. Of course outside the mask she remained as stoic as ever as she stood from the back of the man she had landed on. She definitely didn't twitch again at the rocks being tossed near her feet, letting them hit the downed - what did he call them? Vampires? - the downed vampires. Instead she just examined the handiwork, how the one she had landed on wasn't doing a weird hissing noise anymore. Actually, Grim thought she heard a snore. A slight snort of amusement escaped her lips. Alright, magic was good for some things.

Finally Grim turned her gaze to the young man in front of her, trying to assess him. Eager, young, inexperienced possibly. Reminded her a bit of Blackstar honestly. Briefly she considered just leaving him without a word but another vigilante in her city, even a young buck, was something to keep track of, so finally she dipped her head in a slight nod to him.

"Practice," The older vigilante responded smoothly, the high class accent being drowned out by the rough rumblings of the voice modulator. "It's all about how you carry your weight." Behind the lenses of her goggles she ran a critical eye over him, impressed with the outfit but a little 'iffy' to be honest. There were plenty of people as she worked that wanted to play hero, and another influx had started since the sudden surge of strange powers a few months ago. People were being hurt with their inexperience, as this young man probably would've been even with his magic when faced off against three... vampires. Seriously, Zoey wasn't going to get over that.

"You bit off a bit more than you could chew."

---

Hex shrugged, enthusiasm undimmed. "If that's what you want to think," he said with a grin, largely burshing off her cautionary words- though he did agree with the thing about practice, it was why he was out here at... whatever o'clock it was. The thing was though, magic had all kinds of aces he could stash up his sleeves, and his aces were some of the best! He'd have been fine. Probably. At a cost.

The mysterious warnings given to him by the Master were suddenly hovering over his head again, and he winced. "Anyway, thanks! But uh, don't tell my dad? Kinda not supposed to..." he trailed off, gesturing to the alleyway around them and the situation as a whole. "Oh! Right!" He bent down and scooped up one of the magic gauntlets from the vampire's wrists. "Can't leave these just laying around!" He studied the glowing golden runes carved on them with a wide smile on his face; "No way! A complete Sah-Sop-Det matrice configuration?!" He shot an amazed look down to the vampire he'd taken it from speculatively; "This is probably older than your entire species, how the hell did you get it?" He demanded, but received only a snore in response.

Hex shrugs, bending over to collect the other two. "Oh well, mine now. I guess we'll have to keep an eye out for any more of these, and- oh!" He spun on his heel, throwing his hand out as if to catch something, and then his phone came somersaulting from the rooftops and landed perfectly in his hands. He stopped the recording. "Evidence." He claimed, giving Grim a wide victorious grin.

"Now, how to stop these guys from getting the drop on anyone else?" He pondered aloud, "I guess we could just shove them into Hell or something." Probably a death sentence, and he wasn't sure he even was capable of that, but it was a thought. "Bit harsh though... any ideas?"

---

"Sah-Sop-Det...?" Well, what the boy lacked in skill, preparation, and outright survival instincts he at least made up for in enthusiasm. And magic. Grim's eyes flicked over at the object suddenly coming to Hex, underneath her mask a frown tugging at her lips. She made a slight humming noise as he explained the purpose of the phone, and while he was pondering what to do with the vampires reached into one of the pouches on her belt. A twist of her fingers on the electromagnet had it go off silently, letting it run before once more returning it to stasis. That should mess with the latest video on his phone, at least to just before she showed up.

"... Hell." As the teenager's words finally penetrated Grim just reached up, rubbing the bridge of her mask where her nose would be. This was a strange night. "If they're vampires they should probably be put down." The vigilante finally stated, somewhat dryly. "I'm sure there's plenty of tame ones but these ones were going after people - at least, I assume that's what the disappearances around here were." She tilted her head slightly to look at the golden gauntlets now held by Hex, after a moment holding a hand out.

"I'd like one of those," She stated after a moment, deciding she could leave the other in his care. He at least seemed to know about magic enough she didn't feel guilty about it. Though, thoroughly trained and bred manners had her adding on one last thing. "Please."

---

Hex frowned, annoyed. "Ugh, you sound like dad. 'Just pop a stake in 'em and be done with it,' or whatever it is he says. You don't think that's the slightest bit murder happy?" He gave her a curious eying up and down, and crossed his arms.

After a moment he sighed, "Alright fine, you can have one of the gauntlets, if anyone asks I'll just say there were only two- not that anyone has any reason to ask - but I'll deal with these blood chuggers." He tossed the spare gauntlet to her and pulled out his phone once again, dialing Pads' number as he so often found himself doing. Yay police contacts. So much for being out of his jurisdiction, but if anyone knew of a time out house for the supernatural it'd be Pads. Or Dad, obviously, but that wasn't in the cards lest he wanted to confess the whole... anyways. "Don't worry, they won't cause anymore trouble, if I have to I'll just nail them in a coffin for a few decades. Or whatever." He groaned, "I just realized I'm going to have to bust the rest of their coven aren't I? D'you think Dad would accept an anonymous tip? Since, y'know, you know each now and everything." Creepy really, he could count the number of mundane dealings Clayton Toombs had on one hand, not that Grim was especially mundane, but context, such as it was.

He groaned again, "Nevermind, what's the point of 'proving myself' if I don't see the whole thing through on my own? I'm so stupid." And if Dad finds out also so dead. Probably. He wasn't sure how the man would react, this was the first time Tommy had ever pushed the boundaries so far: sneaking out, practicing obscure magic, dealing with werewolves, confronting vampires, cursing muggers... Dad was going to murder him. with the Nail. "This is probably why the Bible says witches go to Hell right? Because their Dad's shank them with cursed nails when they break the rules." He covered his face with his hands, taking a moment to hide and wallow in the mistake, then shook it off and refocused on Grim. "Uh, just forget everything you heard. And saw. Please?"

---

"I don't take a life lightly, even a ... supernatural one, but there have been disappearances." Grim however just stared at Hex, underneath the mask her eyebrows furrowing together. The pieces clicked together in quick succession now that she had more of them, painting a picture. Honestly, she should've expected this the first time he had referred to his father, but it just hadn't quite settled. His father, her knowing his father, anonymous tips and cursed nails. The vigilante took a moment to tilt one of the vampire's head with her foot, checking that he was really asleep before commenting calmly to the boy.

"So you're Toombs' boy?" Figures. A sigh rumbled out of her mask, akin to a growl with the modulator fragmenting it. "Look, vigilantism isn't something you should be doing at your age. It's dangerous, even with magic - I'm sure you've heard it all from your father. Go home. I'll deal with this."

---

"What? No way!" He protested, "I've got this! I'm not going let you cart them off just to dump them in some fire barrel like kindling. I know what I'm doing." Vaguely. Besides, what if the two others were just following orders? What if they all were? He didn't like the idea that a vampire clan might be owing up to a faerie debt and recruiting so... recklessly. There was much more at work here. "This is way more complicated than you can see, there are reasons things like this happen the way they do." He gestured around the alley, indicating the predatory ambushes and the disappearances as a whole. "I just need to collect a bit of intel is all." That, and build a supernatural prison all by himself. Somehow. He could do that. He needed more books though.

He shrugged after a moment, deciding he was committed. The vampires wouldn't die, but neither would they be free, and once he and Pads were finished with them they'd spill all they knew and he'd finally have a lead for his dad about some of the recent Fae activity going on in Gotham. It'd be a risk, revealing just how... nosey he'd been recently, getting involved in all sorts of supernatural things without parental guidance, but maybe his dad would see this as a sign he was ready for the big stuff.

---

"Yes, there is a reason things happen. Sometimes it's just that people are animals," Grim glanced away from the boy before her, scanning up and down the alley with her heat optics in an engrained motion of checking her surroundings. "Kid, trust me, I've been doing this for years. People die doing this work. What are you going to do if there's more than three next time? Maybe five, six, a dozen? Two dozen? It's dangerous. Go home, tell your father if you think it's necessary, and me and him will handle it. At your age you should be worried about girls and homework, even learning more about your magic, but not ... all this." She gestured at the scene as a whole before dropping her hand. Zoey was highly aware of how that sounded considering Blackstar was probably at home practicing his own techniques for scouring the city, but at least he had a supervisor and strict instructions to not gallavant around on his own. She couldn't help but mutter under her breath.

"Honestly, kids these days are so eager to be adults. Being an adult is the worst."

---

Hex's eyes narrowed, and he tensed, taking offense at the older vigilant's condescension. There was little he could do though, he couldn't take the criminals out from under her without complicating his own escape, and standing by while people were killed was just another day in his life. True they were criminals, powerful ones even, but it left him feeling... wrong, and angry. It wasn't right. Eventually he shoved the two gloves into his wasteband. He stepped back onto his own conjured platform and leveled a blank, judging look at his fellow vigilante. "Fine, I can't stop you. Be careful you don't regret this." His tone conveyed his stance quite clearly; he didn't like this, he didn't like her, and he would hold a grudge over it quite happily.

"Watch your step Grim," he offered as a mock warning, "lots of things bite. Dogs for example, and wolves too, I wonder what happens when you try to cull such beasts."

He knew exactly what happened; balances were disrupted, governments got involved, people formed opinions and staged protests. Societies were a lot like ecosystems in a way; packs, prides, herds, territorial disputes, those at the top meddling with those at the bottom- power vacuums, delicate stabilities, but people were also so much more complex. Murder would show a slippery slope straight into more unrest, more violence, more murder, especially if the fae were involved like he suspected. They needed less killing, more strategy, more information, more allies.

But no, apparently Grim knew better. Hah.

His platform took on a rectangular shape, much like a skateboard, and little loops formed when he flicked his wrists, wrapping around his feet. Then he was abruptly shooting off into the sky, taking several quick hard turns around Gothams obstructive architecture and fading out of sight with only a rapidly vanishing trail of pink magic dust to mark his path.

That... could have gone better. And he really should get back to Anna's, just in case.

---

That could have gone better.

Grim breathed out a heavy sigh watching the young man disappear ... in a trail of pink? Odd fashion choice, but who was she to judge modern day fashions? She was the one running around in the middle of the night in a gas mask.

At least Toombs' boy had listened, as reluctant and pouty as it was with his parting shot to her. This was dangerous business, people got hurt being overconfident in their skills and trying to bite off too much at once. She would know. Briefly Grim thought of contacting Toombs - or at least trying, considering how vague magic instructions were; he'd likely be interested in knowing his son's activities. Honestly it wasn't the most honest of ideas, but if she could do anything to try and reduce casualties she would do it. His kid should at least have someone watching his back.

Speaking of which...

Beep-beep.

"Jaina."

"It's Grim. Do you know where we can get coffins and a truck load of garlic this late at night?"

Who says an old dog can't learn new tricks?

It was a saying his own people had taken to heart of late, something Lord Ares and Lady Aphrodite had parroted to them with secret smirks, sharing amused glances. All is fair in love and war. Seeing the message scrawled across the wall of a somewhat dilapidated old fort felt like a sign, though he knew his gods were not quite so subtle- nor so generous.

The information was not readily available to Kassander, but this was Fort Josephine, a sea fort commissioned some time in the late 1800s, located off the end of Long Island near where Connecticut met Rhode Island. It had been abandoned for some time, and was due to follow in the footsteps of similar naval installations that had been renovated into luxury resorts, yet the private owners hadn’t quite finished renovating.

It was well into the night by the time he landed on the island, releasing his grasp on his brother and his animal companion. The moon was high in the sky and just as enrapturing as the sun had been. Never had he seen a night so total, and even the stars were breathtaking- if only he knew how much dimmer they were here, blotted out by the glowing cities of New England.

The doors were all unlocked, the lights out except for small ‘power’ lights that indicated the place had electricity at least. Nearly all the furnishings were in place, and Kassan was a little bemused why such a comfortable and luxurious sea-mansion was empty. The owners couldn’t have gone very far right? All these bedrooms, the wide dark screens, the countless shining glass surfaces and soft cushions… this was grander even than the palace, and yet no one lived here? He stalked the halls in silence, exploring without comment as he took in every detail and searched for threats and clues alike.

As he’d landed on the roof it took him awhile to reach the bottom floor, though there were only three. It was there he discovered the reason the place was abandoned; scaffolds filled a large entrance way, and a cold chill permeated the room due to a few missing windows and holes in the wall. What could only be tools and construction supplies littered the area as well. It was unfinished, still being built.

He could work with that.

There were papers weighted down here and there, the words on them illegible. He abruptly became aware of a minor obstacle to his mission: language. He would have to trade favors to overcome this particular hurdle in a timely fashion. Maybe Hermes? Always questionable that one’s loyalties, but he was a traveler- or maybe he should seek aid elsewhere, from another pantheon altogether; the Olympians were too close to one another, it’d be unwise to spill something in the wrong ears.

He sighed and went in search of Zali and Vel, having lost the two of them while investigating the nooks and crannies of this place.

Angus held on desperately to the launcher, watching the city streets speed behind their truck from the perspective of the open door. There were still a couple more rockets left, which meant only good things in the future for their heists especially if they made it back to the safehouse in time. "Cannae fukken believe we made it out boyos!" Donovan was beside himself with how pleased he was over the success of their hit, the image of burning money not one to leave any of them soon. The spirits of the three brothers were high, and very little could bring them down.

Except perhaps the only thing higher than their spirits, the Man of Steel himself. So consumed in his own hubris, the eldest Breen didn't notice the man standing in the street until he collided the truck brutally into him. Steel, fiberglass and aluminum crumpled against the immovable object, forming a man-shaped indentation and sending his brothers crashing against the back wall of the box truck. A sound crack echoed around the cabin as his own skull met the steering wheel, leaving a nasty gash across his face before the airbag deployed a full ten seconds after the vehicle came to a forced halt to add insult to injury.

None of the three were particularly quick to resist being dragged from the vehicle, though for equal parts Irish spirit and good alcohol, Donovan was the first to blearily open his eyes and look up at the one responsible for ending their good times.

"An jus who the fuck you be?" His words slurred dangerously, hinting at a concussion like the least subtle main street hooker. At the moment his cognizance was hampered by that head injury, and his brothers weren't much better as they both took a hefty hit in the accident. Patrick gathered his senses next, looking around in confusion and wondering why Donovan was yelling and why everything was ringing.

"Ey bruv, tell whoever's ringing the bloody bell to stop it. Damned thing is a right pain in the arse." Despite being the denser one of the three, he paused as he recognized Superman standing before them, and connected the dots with chilling swiftness. "Oh shite, you're that Superman bloke. Hey, we didn't do nuffin, and you can't prove it!"

Donovan chose that moment to regain some semblance of clear-headedness and glared up at the super-powered barricade, unsure whether to be more pissed at their getaway being ruined or his truck getting totaled. "Oi, listen up asshole. You just wrecked our truck, and you gotta pay for it. Took me and me brothers years to save up enough to have our own truck!" Of course he was playing it up for the onlookers, putting on as best a victimized face as he could and giving Patrick the look of "Play along Pat!"

Not very many were too convinced though, but he had said it loud enough to put in just a little bit of doubt and with the press Superman had gotten so far, all it took was to sell a story just good enough. A story that promptly died when Angus groggily grinned over at them and laughed through bloodied teeth. "Donny! Can't believe Jeremy's launcher worked! Those chinamen had no idea what hit them!"

Donovan could only stare in incredulous wonder at his idiot brother, never mind that Superman was right there. "Angus, Pat. Shut the hell up."

March 16th, 2020.
Amnesty Bay, Maine.

Girard sat quietly on his couch watching the news while his daughters were curled up either side of him napping. They had a lot of energy but several hours of running around and playing took it right out of them so he got them to come over to watch a bit of TV before they zonked out. He wasn't needed on site today so he got some quality time at home while being able to check in via phone at any point if there was an issue which left him plenty of time for the rest of the day. Watching the news was something he had avoided in the past at times because he already knew it was going to be bad but ever since he took to the streets he paid far more attention to it. It was helpful to track crime patterns before ever having to leave his house since it made tracking the criminals in question easier once he was out and about during the night. Sure he wasn't the most prolific vigilante you ever heard about but putting a bit of fear or uncertainty into local criminals at least made some of them think twice, some being the operative word but only so much a man can do in his position.

There had been a rather high profile bank robbery recently which he hadn't been able to get involved in and had been silently kicking himself for it since. The lack of support for vigilantes didn't exactly make it appealing in a sense with all of law enforcement and media calling them out as criminals for having the guts to make an impact. If he ever got found out it could get bad so keeping to the shadows as much as possible was what he attempted to do before quick precise strikes on targets then getting out in the same fashion, no one knew much about Tank yet and he would quite like to keep it that way if possible to reap the benefits. Wouldn't last forever as it was only a matter of time before the strange insect robber might hit again and with no other powered vigilantes to his knowledge in Amnesty Bay it was up to him to contest the thief. However he tried to push the thoughts aside when he wasn't alone or with Abby as no one else could afford to know nor would they understand his need to go out as Tank delivering a swift kick in the ass to anybody who thought they could get away with causing trouble.

Girard turned to look as he heard someone at the door then remembered Abigail had said she would be back right about this time before lo and behold she strolled in with a smile.

"How are the girls doing?" She asked quietly trying not to disturb the two nappers.

"Been sleeping for a couple hours now, probably won't be too much longer till they're up and hungry." He replied chuckling lightly at the end.

They were interrupted by a yawn to the right of him as on cue little Leila roused herself up at the mention of food.

"Hi mommy, can we have grilled cheese? Daddy promised if we put the toys away." The girl said mumbling a bit at first then after reaching over to shake her sister awake. "Haylee! Mommy's home."

Abi came over and hugged both of them before the little ones got up to rush for the kitchen very happily and ready to eat, they also liked to help a little by putting the cheese on the bread. Girard got himself up ready to join them after getting a kiss on the cheek from his wife who told him they were a little low on a couple things in the fridge. It was all he needed to know figuring a nice drive to the grocery store wouldn't take too long at all plus better to get it done now rather than later. The big man made his way out to his truck and started heading into the city to do his errand plus say hi to a few friends who he met along the way. He side eyed the decently hidden duffel bag behind the passanger seat where he kept his "costume" which had a couple things covering it, never too far in case a quick switch from family man to crime fighter was needed, plus it had the benefit of having the bag itself around if he needed it when the clothing had to be fixed up.

"No need to worry, its a nice day and there should be next to no action most likely." He thought trying to reassure himself more than anything.

7 AM is a late start for Death Man. Usually by now he'd be at one of his offices, taking reports and calls. Deciding which businesses needed extra protection, whether or not any messages needed to be sent for the good of the organization as a whole. Normally, he'd be in Tokyo. Today, however...

New York, Staten Island Port- Warehouse 52

He was jetlagged. Tired, angry. Still though, he'd come to this warehouse- legally purchased using some loan-sharking money- to deliver a message. A message that would not be undermined by the sounds of the bustling docks outside, or the beep-beep-beep of heavy machinery at work. He paced back and forth on the shipping container before a small crowd of very nervous men and women in very nice suits with high collars, a makeshift stage for his little presentation. Some of his audience were new recruits from the Americas and back overseas, some were old blood from Japan. The new kids, he could understand. They didn't know how things worked. But the ones who'd been in his syndicate before didn't look any more pleased than he did. Stopping, he sighed. A large red curtain hung behind him, and he turned to face the crowd, leaning on his cane for effect.

"Gentlemen. I came all the way from Tokyo to check on some... disturbing reports I've received of this cell's activities. I've been lead to believe that you have been buying and selling human beings."

He spun the cane, pointing to the gathered crooks, glaring under his skeleton mask. The reaction of fear was consistent, at least. That was good. The new blood had likely been informed of what happened to those who crossed him.

"Now, I feel like I've had this conversation every few months, and it's getting tiresome. I just got the blood off my favorite shoes from last time. Human trafficking is not the purview of Tekiya. It takes advantage of the lonely and downtrodden. It is a shitty thing to do, and the exact sort of thing the Yakuza formed to prevent. I'm not angry with you, just... disappointed. Satou, the curtain."

With that, the curtain spread open to reveal a young, tattooed, bare-naked Japanese man bound with chains and gagged, hanging upside-down from a crane. As the man struggled, Death Man leapt down from the container.

"However, I am positively LIVID with Shotaro here. I understand this was his idea, so he's the one who's getting punished. Now, the last few times someone tried to start an operation like this, I just cut off a finger, as is tradition. But that's not getting the message across. Satou, the crate."

The crate slid aside, a man in a similar skull mask using a forklift to do so. Lord Death man tapped on a large aquarium full of crystal-clear water... in which a half dozen alligators eye the meal above greedily. Death Man flipped the top of his cane open, pressing a button as the hook dropped the bound man into the aquarium. As the water churned and turned to a deep red, one of the men at the back- his mottled skin covered in red and blue lines- laughed and patted a squeamish looking Asian-American youth's shoulder.

"Thus, I direct your attention to the tank of sewer gators that Shotaro is currently taking a swim in! These alligators infest the sewers of New York, abandoned long ago by tourists who thought a pet alligator would be a wonderfu souvenir from a vacation to Florida. Now, as he preyed upon outcasts, these outcasts shall prey upon him. Going forward, remember- we are criminals, not monsters. There's plenty of gators for the traitors. I suggest you focus on your smuggling of electronic parts and luxury goods in the future. Now... I have other business to attend."

With that, Death Man walked towards the exit of the warehouse, his cape swirling dramatically behind him as he headed to the car he used while operating in New York... a powder blue Trabant. Small and nonthreatening, the tinted windows didn't even register to most. Now he just had to make his way through traffic. He switched on the radio and began the long, arduous journey back to HQ...

Superman eyed through all three of the men sizing them up one by one. For all intents and purposes these men weren't exactly in the right stand of mind and didn't particularly seem all that fond in cooperating. Still there was little doubt that these men were apart of something bigger, it wasn't some random attack. They were well armed and there was nothing ordinary about the weapon they used nor the target. As Superman privately debated his set course of actions he could hear the various whispers as onlookers continued to gather and watch and with sirens off in the distance it was a matter of time till the police and the press showed up something he wanted to avoid.

"Alright, so it's like that. We're going to play dumb huh?" Superman asked out aloud taking his time to look at each of the three men once more, eye to eye to make sure they got a good look at him and vice versa. "Ok... I'm in the mood for some games" Superman then leaned over, grabbing Angus and Pat by the neck and hoisted them high of the ground. Any attempts to strike at the caped man's arms and torso would have felt like they were hitting a brick wall. With both of his arms occupied Superman stepped forward, placing a foot on Donovan's chest, planting him into the concrete road. For several seconds Superman held them there being extra careful to ensure he didn't accidentally kill any of them but sure enough he knew they were more than uncomfortable. The crowd watching gasped with the occasional individual pulling out their cell phones to record said situation. Sure three men were being in danger but nobody dared to try and stop the chiseled physique of a man who was man handling three others with no effort.

Leaning in to talk in a volume only audible to the gathered men Superman smirked as he watched them struggle against his strength "Sucks doesn't it? You guys want to play dumb, well I can play also." And with that there was an ounce of increased pressure and the already superhuman grip somehow grew stronger.

"Since you assholes know who I am, let me remind you guys that I don't have a boss and you know what that means?" Superman paused as if he was trying to get an answer but continued to mock the three men. "It means I don't answer to nobody and that means I get to do whatever the fuck I want. Now I can make this easy, or I can make this really... fucking easy." Superman again applied another ounce of pressure. "You see I could crush all three of you instantly and nobody would be able to stop me but no that's too quick... way too fucking quick" Superman took his time, letting them suffocate and face the reality of an inevitable death "Hmm...Maybe I'll tear of your arms and beat you with them, or maybe I'll see if I can strap you on any left over rockets or better yet..." Superman's iris's begin to glow red "Or maybe I'll burn out your eyes or cook you guys alive, either way someone is going to talk" The pressure finally eased up, his eyes returning to normal. Superman needed them conscience, to think properly. Surely he had done enough to intimidate them.

"Now you guys are going to tell me everything. I want to know who you work for and where I can find them. I want to know what else you assholes are planning because I'm going to stop your little activities. Now if either of you lie to me, I'll find out somehow and there ain't nobody whose going to fuck you up the way I will so, whose going to volunteer?"

McClellan Residence, A Prison of His Own Making

Tim didn't think being suspended for a few days was much of a punishment at first. Considering the way his mom had gone full lawyer and stormed out of the principal's office threatening to ruin Lloyd Senior's family and the school for apparently being fine with letting his son assault a student attending on a scholarship if Tim's punishment went further than that, maybe it wasn't really meant to be one. Still, being stuck in the house all day with no one around for two days running was starting to get boring. His parents had locked his tablet up in a chest in their room to 'teach him a lesson on solving his problems with violence first' even if they might agree with his reasons for doing it. He'd been thinking about all of it a lot when he wasn't distracting himself with his phone or TV.

What was the point talking things out with people like that? You had to stop them from hurting people first and then maybe you could talk with them about not being a complete-

*bbzt!*

Tim checked his phone, more desperate than he thought he'd be for reciprocated contact from the outside world. It was Elliot. Tim thought he might have given Elliot his phone number before he'd gotten called out over the PA. Maybe he'd gotten it off of someone in class.

So how'sprison?

Tim was typing up a response, already grateful his parents hadn't tried taking away his phone so they could still contact him for emergencies.

Help me break out? I'm bored:

R u kidding?! u're lucky u didn't get x-pelled! I didn't think ne1 could get away with smthing like that and u're only gone 4 a few days!

Yeah I guess that's true. mom's a lawyer and dad works for KBEL the broadcasting company. Think they threatened to do legal stuff and spread it all over the news.-Better not say he was vice-chairman. It was the kinda thing that made friendships weird. Anyways, time to change the subject-About the news you think Lady Arcana really fried the police commish?

Ionno, it's sus. She could just gank him whenev no need 2b sneaky. Arcana doesn't kill NEway.

Yeah I mean she didn't even kill that Nazi dude and he prob deserved it. It's the kinda thing that knocks her out for the spot for #1 hero

Wut?! No way! Arcana's the gr8est!

You're crazy! I mean the Question's cool and mysterious and old school and awesome! Sure he's really just a Hub City guy who fights local crime but he's probably the closest thing we have to the classic Actor Activists from waaay back and being a normal dude fighting for the everyman in Hub just makes him cooler! Plus he's supposed to be a crazy good detective! Then you've got Grim in Gotham, who's amazing if at least even half the rumors are true AND they aren't afraid to off criminals who deserve it! They probably deserve the number 1 spot more than Arcana does! You have that Superman guy in New York too but he kinda seems like a massive jerk who doesn't care if he wrecks the city while he does his thing right? I dunno if he's a hero or just a guy doing what he feels like so Arcana's above him at least. I guess you hear some stories about that Vinestalker thing occasionally showing up to do hero stuff but isn't that more of a bigfoot or a loch ness monster deal so I don't think he counts. So I mean sure Arcana's probably the most powerful real hero in the world and she's cool but she takes it way too soft on bad guys who deserve it. I guess I'd give her like the number 3 spot so far but there's probably better heroes out there and new heroes keep showing up right?

aaaand that killed the convo pretty quick. Tim should've known better than to hit Elliot with a wall-of-text rant on superheroes when he probably would've just been like 'I still like LA tho'. after the first sentence and been fine. Tim sighed and went over to the indoor hutch where he kept the rabbit his parents had picked up for him one day, just because they felt like doing something nice, according to his Mom.

"Hey at least I don't have to worry about you judging me for beating up bullies or getting hyper about heroes, right Hoppy?"

Still, if had a chance Tim would love to really be a hero and not just watch them. He'd do way more than just stop some kid from getting beat on. It'd be great. If only.

March 20th, 8:00 AM-
Camelot Park, Coney Island

After a long drive through New York's awful traffic, Death Man pulled his car into the hidden garage at Camelot Park. Abandoned around 1975, the park's medieval themes had just fallen out of the youth's interests. However, like abandoned theme parks across the multiverse, this monument to merriment had a new, far more sinister purpose! For as Death Man stepped through the service door of the garage to the walk-through tour of a medieval dungeon- complete with animatronic skeletons and "authentic" torture devices, A panel on the floor rose up, revealing an obsolete- but still quite functional- elevator that lead to his base. From outside, this lead-and-concrete structure was invisible to most forms of detection. It wasn't even in the city's municipal plans anymore- but the medieval aesthetic continued as Death man descended, finding himself in a magnificent feasting hall within...

March 30th, 8:05 AM

A number of skull-masked grunts milled about the room, cleaning up from breakfast. It was a busy day here in the office, and the boss had just arrived. Death Man inspected everything as he passed- wooden tables, fancy carpets, tapestries depicting the greatest of Britain's medieval criminals- from Eustace Folville's outlaw ways, to Lord Despenser The First's thefts. Yes, this was thematically appropriate for the base. There were suits of armor with axes, halberds, and greatswords. Again, appropriate, though he was unsure if they were merely decorative or if they were haunted or something. He was hoping they were haunted.

Inspection continued as he entered various side doors on his way through the bunker. The labs where his inventors and scientists reverse-engineered technology and electronics were off the main path, to avoid the aesthetic conflicts of their clean, sanitary working conditions. The enforcers had their own rooms, appropriately furnished... aside from the posters, and Kid Kafka's TV. Well, he wasn't going to fault Greg for wanting a TV after Doctor Denki figured out how to pirate satellite channels. That would slide as well.

Eventually, he came to a large, seemingly oaken door... with a keypad on it. He put in the code- his wife's birthday- and made his way across a regal carpet to the mahogany desk, eased himself into a vintage office chair, and logged into the 2004 desktop computer that awaited. He slapped a large folder on the desk, looking quite pleased as he flipped through it. Profits were up, as usual. He pushed the blinking button on the video chat client that popped up on his screen- a custom number that Doctor Denki had come up with. He was met with thirteen shadowed figures that promptly saluted.

"HAIL, LORD DEATH MAN! Eternal is his reign of terror!"

"I apologize for my tardiness, men. This city's traffic is apalling. However, until we secure the sewers, we must deal with it. Let us begin the reports."

The first to respond is a man in a full-body suit and wrestling mask, decorated with designs of the human muscular system.

"Senketsu Joe The Fifth, reporting! Lord Death Man, the Rogue Alliance of Wrestling has announced our intention to square off with the stars of a Mexican promotion in their next Battle Royale. They have agreed to do some pushing for some of our guys. But we believe that in addition to the ticket sales, the prize for this event may be worth the Death Syndicate's attention."

Death Man steepled his fingers as he leaned in towards the webcam, raising an eyebrow under his mask. Senketsu Joe was a mantle assumed by the head of the Rogue Alliance of Wrestling- a wrestling promotion he had acquired from one of the smaller families he absorbed. It had always been headed up by Senketsu Joe- a wrestler who was forever banned from the ring for being too brutal. That is to say, for bringing a knife into the ring and shanking the promotion manager for forcing him to job constantly. This was one of his successors, Joe the Fifth- a striker as opposed to the original's power moves. Still, he had a decent head for business.

"And what is this prize, Senketsu Joe?"

"The golden mask of the wrestler who retired in 1975... and the large jewel that is attached to it! It's the mask of Aztec!"

Aztec. Death Man vaguely remembered that name. Senketsu Joe the Third, the previous owner of the Senketsu Joe gimmick, had spent enough time complaining his diva personality. Back in the days when wrestling promotions around the world were willing to work together on a regular basis, Aztec flew from Mexico to Japan to "seek revenge against Joe the Third for crippling his mentor in a steel cage match." It was a cliche, and the man was an awful person. But Aztec's high-flying moves sold tickets, even if he just sort of disappeared after beating Senketsu Joe the Third once... due to allegations of drug abuse. It was no great loss to the organization, and they still had the rights to his image in Japan. The man had always claimed that the his mask- and particularly the Star of Quetzlcoatl on it- was part of ancient priestly garb that gave his predecessors in the Aztec mask phenomenal mystic powers. It sounded like it was a pretty standard gimmick for a luchadore, but with the advent of mystical events... Maybe there was something more to the claim. And really, would they miss what they thought was a dusty old prop?

"Excellent. Joe, I want that mask. If it has half the power that Aztec claimed, it will be invaluable to the syndicate. While the promotion is underway, I will make an attempt to steal it."

With a hearty salute, Senketsu Joe bows. It'd be time for the writers to get together soon and start planning.

"Of course Lord Death Man! It will be done!"

The next to speak up is a figure with yellow scaly skin, sitting on a boat beneath a starry sky.

"Imori here. Everything seems fine on thisssss end. We've got a shipment of chocolate to be delivered to Ssssssydney. They won't suspect a thing."

Imori. That would be confusing soon, if the yokai were to return with the magic. A man with thick, scaly skin that made him immune to small arms fire was a real nightmare for shipping officials. An ex-pirate recruited by an organized crime syndicate was worse still. Next a traditional-looking shrine maiden spoke up.

"Greetings, Lord Death Man. I have begun searching the wilderness and rural towns of Japan in search of the objects you have described... We will find what we can and try the mystic rites."

"You have all done well. Continue, and we shall have wealth beyond our wildest dreams. Fail, and you are aware of the consequences. Death Man, out."

With that, Death Man returned his attention to the folder on his desk- a rather large set of pictures and blueprints, as well as a newspaper with some very promising words at the headline: "INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM OF CRIME PREPARES TO WELCOME NEW EXHIBITS FROM THE TOKYO MUSEUM OF HISTORY".

Judas :)

-_-_-_-

Echo landed on the roof of the apartment building he called home. It was a bit run down, the rooms a bit cramped, but it had suited his needs for all the time he'd been here on Earth. He wasn't here for home though, he was here for the secret base he'd claimed in the roof shed. Clutching his prize a little more securely to his chest, he phased them both through the walls directly into the workspace.

The windows were covered now, he'd learned his lesson after Jessie had discovered his pod here, and the door had a fancy electric lock installed on the inside that his partner could simple order to open for her. The place was about as secure as they could make it, the people who lived here couldn't even access the roof, nor were they overly eager to do so- and anyone who forced their way through that would likely not find anything suspicious about a locked roof shed, and neither would any passerby's of the superhuman notice anything out of place, visually at least. It was getting cramped however; his and Jessie's projects were taking up every corner and spare space, and the computers were sucking in energy like a score of Necrofirggian hatchlings- luckily his pod generated enough power to be converted into electrical energy and feed enough of their needs to deflect any suspicion from Satomi Towers' owners about a rising energy bill.

Echo critically examined the cluttered desks and chose a decent sized space filled with the least volatile components they'd gathered, shoving the pieces aside and ignoring it when two mechanical bits with wires sticking out touched and promptly burnt out in a flash of dim light. Oops. Once the space was clear, he delicately placed the arcon on the table and stepped back to... wait for Jessie. He was beginning to learn more about how human technology functioned, but not nearly enough as to dabble wih something as complicated as an arcon- nor was he going to make the decision to plug it into the computers housing all their secrets without Jessie's go-ahead.

Jessie meanwhile, had began to pack her things as soon as Ezra had texted her to head back. A short moment later she was out of the shop, ducking into a back alley and slipping on her goggles. Reaching under her cloak, she disconnected the collapsed hoverboard from her shoulder harness and tossed it to the ground, grinning as it unfolded and began to float with a satisfying hum. Leaping onto the floating disk, Lightning Bug felt her boots snap into place as she willed the board forward and up, rocketing out into the streets of Coast City. She had taken to flying about twenty feet above the crowds now, enough to satisfy her desire to be gawked at by the normies, while still flying high and fast enough that she couldn't be caught. Weaving through the city streets, down alleys and between buildings, Jessie ran through a checklist in her head. They'd need some things if they wanted to be able to communicate with this AI, this... Judas. And Lightning Bug knew exactly where to get them.

Taking a sharp right down the hilly main roads of Coast City, Lightning Bug zoomed in with her goggles, searching for her drop off point. Soon enough, the shop came into view, and Lightning Bug zeroed in on her destination. To any onlookers or cameras, it would appear as though the girl simply disappeared out of thin air, but to Jessie's point of view, she had really teleported into a small loading area behind Coast City Computer Componnents, run by an old friend of hers. Pulling off her goggles and stowing her hoverboard, Jessie slipped into the shop through the back door, dashing through the stacks of boxes and semi-legally aquired parts and into the main storefront. Josh tossed an unapproving glare her way as Jessie vaulted the counter and dusted herself of, grinning at the mousey man.

"Jess, what the hell are you doing?" He asked accusingly, peering into the back room to make sure she hadn't messed anything up.

"Don't give me that Josh, I'm in a hurry!" Jessie peered at the computer parts laid out in the cases, counters and shelves in front of her and ran through her mental checklist again. "Okay, here's the things I need..."

Moments later, Jessie burst out of the front of the shop, her backpack brimming with new toys. She ran towards Satomi Tower, which was only a few blocks away, eager to set everything up. After finding a secluded spot to fly up and land on the roof, Jessie beelined for the shed, zapping the command console to unlock the door as she arrived. The excitable girl grinned as she saw Ezra was already there, having cleared a space for what looked like a computer tower.

"Fantastic!" Jessie said, dropping her backpack and looking at the cluttered benches. Delicately moving some half-finished components to one side, Jessie set up her laptop, quickly stringing it into the network of computers the pair had been building. "Now, I got some things that might help, cuz I have no idea how this thing is gonna try to talk to us." Jessie said as she began to pull boxes out of her backpack. "I got a microphone so we can talk to it, speakers so it can talk back, a webcam so it can see us, and... Well, hopefully it can manifest an avatar so we can see it too." She said as she plugged everything into her laptop. "Okay, I... Hm, maybe we should unplug some of the computers..." She said, looking specifically at the montiors that were displaying information on ghost hunting and some of their designs. Reaching under the desk and unplugging the connection cables from those machines, Jessie nodded. "Okay... Plug it in, I think we're good to go!"

"An avatar huh?" Ezra asked, glancing around the room with a slowly growing smile. There were two small orb-like devices on either side of the room, parallel to each other and hanging where the ceiling met the wall. This had been one of the few projects he'd taken on himself, to force himself to catch up in his knowledge of human technology. These holo-projectors had been easy enough to make, they were essentially the same design as back home, only somehow more perfect. Grudgingly he was willing to admit the human's had surpassed his own people with this invention at least.

He quickly located the card he'd built for them, unplugging it from a now dark computer and sliding it into one minor computer's ports. It should be able to project it's avatar into the room now, as a 3-D model of light.

"Okay, here we go." He plugged the main connector cables for one of the isolated computers into the core and stood back as the arcon was suddenly introduced to their hardware.

Judas woke up once the wire connection was complete first getting a grasp of the initial computer she was intergrated into. It was significantly different to what she was used to at the lab, more accessable would be the words, which left her far more comfortable exploring it unlike previously. Flipping between the several different moniters wanting to know what exactly there was to work with besides the interconnections in the network swiftly moving along until the microphone and speakers were discovered . This was something she noted but did not use immediately wanting to interact with anything less familiar for future reference as this was all exciting the AI. A quick peek through the web cam gave an idea of her physical surroundings which while nowhere near as spacious as the facility was notably pleasant with its dedication to technology.

It didn't take much in the way of looking before Vox found the power source which was fascinating and quite different she suspected from the average, more questions appearing all the time. One thing that held her interest had been where the other AI was in the system causing her to look in extensive detail for the patterns she remembered from before but finding nothing matching them. Was it capable of masking itself so well even she could not find it or was it disconnected from her for security sake? A pressing concern to ask about because of the need to thank them for alerting the strange phasing human to her existance. Finally a contraption she had no knowledge of immediately in two raised positions which took a moment of thinking before the realization that she simply didn't know what to do with them, the purpose was transmitting data outward but it was a strange concept as to why so she left it be for now.

Quickly returning to the microphone the AI wanted to get a few things cleared up.

"Hello. Thank you for retreiving me from the laboratory, this place is much more pleasing. I wish to know where the other AI is located, they were instrumental in the escape, so I meant to meet them directly if this is not an issue."

Jessie grinned as the computer tower came to life, a subtle flash across the connected screens indicating that the AI was likely trying to get its bearings. After a short moment of tense silence, a simulated voice came through the speakers bearing a very odd question. Jessie's brow furrowed as she considered the nonsensical request, they didn't have another AI...

"Hi there, Judas. It was Judas, right?" Jessie asked, leaning in towards the microphone to be sure the AI could hear her. "I'm, uh... Not sure what you're talking about. We don't have another AI. Echo here was the one who carried you out, and I'm the one who picked up your--" Jessie paused as a sudden thought struck her. Could Judas be thinking of Jessie? "Wait, do you mean the response to your distress signal? That was me! I saw your message on my computer and traced back your signal with my own response!"

There was recieving an answer to a query and then there was near impossibilities, given the computer setup she had seen before her and knowing the security system of the lab well it would take a singularly talented computer expert to do what this human claimed. But then she was here and not still trapped in quarantine so how would a human manage a similar feat, she had seen the scientists attempt to match her failing time and again as she grew but this one could do it as Vox did.

"Correct, that is my chosen title. You are the one who heard me?" The AI had a note of disbelief at first in her tone as the question came out. "The message flowed through the gaps and codes as I do which no other human has done to my knowledge, I do not know how it is possible...however if there is no second AI I cannot find another solution." It was maybe a bit too obvious that this went over Judas' head as a being of limited experience.

"I will process this later...I wonder however what is the function of these projectors? They have a limited screen so information would not be readily available from them, they are strange much like your coworker who moved through the walls."

Oh god, she must not know. Not about the Metahumans or Ezra being an alien, or who knows what else. Fortunately, Judas seemed content to deal with that later, which would hopefully give Jessie time to compile her notes on the various Metahumans into something more coherent than her own ramblings. Jessie turned to look at the projectors that Ezra had set up; he had mentioned their purpose to her while he was building them, but she hadn't recieved much hands-on time with them. Though it was using human technology, the designs were complely foriegn to her and so she had mostly been observing as Ezra built.

"Well, as far as I know, those are some kind of holo-projector... Echo here has been building them, and we're pretty confident they work. They're hooked into the system right now, so I think the idea was that if you wanted to try and use them, you could do so... Honestly though, Echo will be able to answer those questions better, they're his project."

Echo grinned, the little arcon- or AI, arcon was just a term that conveniently tanslated well so he thought he should use it more, but it seemed to confuse the others - was adorable, how had the humans managed to create something like this without Rao-type crystal codes? Without even the slightest dip into greater dimensions?

But the conversation was getting on without him, so he hastened to explain; "Right! Holo-projectors! On Ghol we sometimes had them projecting hard light, but I'm trying to learn human designs," he shrugged a little sheepishly, "so it's just normal light." He gestured to a little baby potted flower in the corner of the room, it had seemingly been lost in the clutter, and then reached down to pick it up- hands going through the plant and pulling out a smaller version of the pieces mounted on the wall. The flower had never been real, he'd just stuck a holo-projector in the pot, but the plant had been fully opaque and indistinguishable from something alive- except it did not breathe air, grow, or respond to gusts of wind when the door opened. "We used them for decoration mostly, but also communication, so people could see each other's faces when they spoke. I thought an AI might appreciate the oppurtunity to utilize a 3-D visual form." Though why he'd assumed an arcon would want to have a human face was beyond him. "Here on Earth they're still experimental, but they have most of the pieces to make one, they just need to... do it?"

Vox had been keeping something of a peripheral to the other human who appeared to be in thought during the conversation as of yet while..smiling? It seemed appropriate but not quite accurate. They were likely observing her in a similar way as she had been the two in front of her which was not surprising given the seeming fascination surrounding her sentience, it appeared to be the reason she was watched and analyzed in the lab so carefully. The str...well both were quite different from the average human but the so far silent one seemed less surprised at her existance if only a little which suggested prior knowledge or experience with them which one again brought up the question, why was she a topic of interest? Surely they had conversed about the subject before yet both were excited at the moment. "Humans apparently are far more confusing than they first appear." She thought fully planning to look further into this subject matter once she was settled in.

The explaination of the holo projectors was rather helpful, even if there were pieces she did not totally understand like 'hard light', especially seeing the use of showing a quite accurate plant where there was none. An avatar might be more interesting than simply staring at a screen as well as more engaging than taking direction simply by verbal or visual replies that she was normally capable of. It also might dispell any illusion she was only some simple machine as expressing herself would be easier...possibly.

"I suppose I will attempt to use them in an acceptable way. I may need a moment to discern how to properly do this however."

Judas toyed with the projectors a bit in a process of figuring out the limitations she had to work with objects differing in size, a moniter, a small furry creature(Beagle) that seemed friendly, then a basic codelike human head with no real features. The AI thought about what she would like to appear as from her known possbilities that would not be too disrupting for the humans but effective in its purpose. Eventually she decided on a human appearance to help with communication though she did not go with a full body as it seemed unnecessary for the moment.

"This is what I have chosen after some thought, is it sufficient?" She asked with genuine curiousity.

Jessie practically held her breath as the holo-projectors came to life, watching the new technology beginning to bend light and create colors out of the air. It seemed Judas was taking some time to decide on the perfect form, even more evidence to Jessie that she was truly sentient, and not just an advanced program. After a quiet moment, the shape took form, and Jessie grinned and squealed in excitement.

"Judas, it's perfect!" She said, rushing up to the holo projectors to make sure they were handling the stress properly. "You're taking to the new tech nicely, though I'm going to guess the actual setup here is a lot smaller than you're used to. Do you think you'll be able to adjust properly?"

"We should probably expand our operations anyway. We barely have room to breath," Echo interjected, eying their messy space.

Vox was quite pleased with herself for picking out something that worked and she liked at the same time. So much so that her avatar was smiling as a result even if she didn't notice herself.

"It will not be an issue, I much prefer being here despite any constraints. More space would be nice in the future but it is comfortable for now." The AI said in a relaxed tone happy to rest for now but excited for what was to come.

Click. Click. Whir.

It was a distinctive sound, one of an older model camera finding a subject and capturing it for all time. Yet it was not. That sound came from the square of compact technology held in the spaniard's hands, digitally rendering the images into data and sending them off with each little click. He prefered the older ways, but he had a duty that required such tools. Each click captured another still of the man in the middle of the street and sent it off via satellite uplink to a secured server.

Click. The truck came to a stop, metal folding around the man as if it was marshmallow and not rigid steel. Click, click. Men lifted from the vehicle as if they were toys, deposited on the ground with ease. Click. Without effort he lifted two into the air and depressed his foot onto the eldest of the brothers, pain etched across his face as his chest was slowly crushed underfoot. Yes, these would do marvelously. His employer would be pleased, especially considering what he had gathered from the scene of the prior attack. Phenomenal strength, flight, breath as cold as northern winds, and perhaps even some kind of heat vision if the man's eyes and words could be believed. The Agent continued to observe as he could hear the cries of the three gangsters, a smile on his face as he met Donovan's gaze and gave a simple nod.

---

Donovan coughed up blood as the pressure on his bruised chest increased, his brothers watching with barely concealed concern, though more so in the case of Angus. "You think you're hot shit?" Despite the pain and rather untenable circumstances, the eldest of the Breen brothers managed a derisive smirk as he spat on Superman's boot. "My name is Donovan Breen, and I'm the boss. Call yourself a New Yorker, and you don't even know the Irish Mafia when you trip over them. What a fool."

A few of the faces in the crowd confirmed he was telling the truth when they began whispering among each other.

"It's really him, that's Donovan Breen!"
"I heard he put a bunch of Russians at the bottom of the river last year, just because they looked at his crew funny…"
"Those must be the Breen brothers… Patrick Breen beat a friend of mine to death a month ago, he didn't even owe him anything…"
"Serves them right, Irish bastards. They think they run this neighborhood."
"Don't they know this is Triad territory?"

Even still, he found that little bit more of courage as he glared up defiantly at Superman. "Those Chinamen had it coming. Queens is our town, and they got no right to muscle in on us and think we won't hit them back. So go ahead Superman, have us arrested. You're still just a jumped-up freak with a costume, and one day you'll get yours too. When it happens, me and me brothers will still be on the street running this town."

"Look, it really wasn't that big of a-"

Clarissa wouldn't even let Karen finish before she was in her face. "Not that big?! You went on a date with Zoey Kasimir!"

"It wasn't a date! We just had lunch!" She protested, her cheeks growing red as she noted the other passengers on the train staring oddly at them. Whenever she got excited Clare would forget her indoor voice completely.

Folding her arms with a dissatisfied huff, the other girl eased back in her seat. Although Clarissa was a year older than herself, she could really act incredibly childish when she didn't get what she was after. "If I was dating a billionaire celebrity, I wouldn't keep all the juicy stuff from you."

"The only 'juicy' stuff was that OJ I had!" Karen shot back. "I told you everything. There's no art for you to draw this time."

Clarissa smirked lightly at this, glancing up at the dirty ceiling of the train. "We'll see about that, my friend. We'll see about that."

Great. Now her best friend was starting to sound like a supervillain. Between Wilhelm escaping earlier in the month and that weirdo guy in New York, she had more than enough of those in her life right now. It's funny, before she gained these powers she was constantly worried about her grades at school. They were her ticket out of here. Now? She barely even cared, simply going through the motions to maintain her "secret identity". All those old concerns seemed so tiny and minuscule now, when you had the weight of the world on your shoulders.

It kind of ate at the back of her head, in truth. She felt guilty for wasting time in school when she could be out helping people. There were folks out there literally dying while she was hunched over a desk. Clarissa had even persuaded her to watch television with her on more than one occasion, even though she'd fallen behind on most of the shows she used to watch.

Was she letting people down by continuing to be Karen Hernandez?

"Hey, what are you acting so broody about?" Clare nudged her.

Ripped from her thoughts, Karen blinked. "Ah, sorry...s'nothing. Just thinking about how I'll be all alone at Hub City Elementary next year."

"Hey, I'll still be around The Wedge, y'know!" Clarissa tried to reassure her false concerns. "And besides, it's just a year. We'll be in the same school again the next three after that!"

Letting her head lull back against the window behind her, Karen exhaled. "Yeah, just a year..."

What would their world even look like a year from now, much less three?

Kasimir Castle, Gotham City

"I swear to god, I'm just going to buy out Verizon and take one of their satellites. This is such bullshit," Cursing filled the cavern deep underneath Kasimir Castle, not an usual sound in the area considering who worked there. Footsteps accompanied the noise, occasionally a little flicker of a torch, as the owner of the castle continued to pace around the chalk drawing she had on the floor of her hangar. Zoey was, for lack of a better word, frustrated. For one due to the size restrictions she was forced to use the hangar rather than her lab, though at least they were close by. A rather large door led from the back of the Grim Grotto to the hangar, where the Grim Jet was quietly parked awaiting usage - along with a pure black motorcycle and rather expensive looking car. The runway lights extended down many, many meters to a seemingly solid wall, a smaller road that would fit the car or motorcycle veering off into its own path to the side.

While the Grim Jet took up most of the room, Zoey's current project had filled the extra space to the side of the runway quite a bit. Diagrams were hung up on walls, a book thrown open on a rolling tool kit, plates of metal in a corner and another rolling table with an utter assortment of things. Along the metal of the floor were dimensions, chalk drawings with little notes written in hurried, elegant scrawl. Not her most professional work, but everything had been thrown together rather haphazardly.

"Okay, no Zoey, this is fine - this is not complete bullshit, you've built more complex and better. Everything is fine." Taking a deep breath Zoey ran her fingers through her hair, slowly exhaling. In truth it probably wouldn't be so frustrating if she wasn't exhausted, having been working with very little sleep for the past two days in order to get started right away, ever since Lady Arcana was in her home. The magic tracker still cheerfully hummed away in the labs, but they needed more - and these satellites were the key. Still, she'd probably need some more equipment, even more specialized parts - really, too bad David had school, getting him to learn how to build satellites with her would probably save some manpower at least. Oh well, he should be focusing on girls and homework anyway. Or boys. Zoey didn't judge her son.

Still, taking a moment to tap at the metallic gauntlet on her left arm Zoey hummed thoughtfully as the built in screen flashed numbers. She definitely wasn't checking how much the national cetllphone providers were worth. Definitely.

... Okay maybe a little, but it would be faster than her learning how to build a satellite from scratch. Every single second she wasted on calculations and building was a second they didn't have the coverage needed in case an incident happened! Maybe Zoey should get Karen to get one of the Arab Federation's satellites. Zoey could disable any lasers. Probably.

Finally the redhead just heaved a sigh. Oh well, no use fighting it - back to working this out once again.

April 1st, 1:35 A.M.
Roof of Kasimir Castle
Gotham City

Marvin could concede--this castle was leagues better than his dingy warehouse. Maybe he should invest in one; then again, considering how many entrances such a place left to an intruder--friendly or not--he might renig his sentiment. He had scaled its face with relative difficulty, unseen grooves and soft depressions made for uneven terrain. A lack of cars and moving bodies made it a little easier to listen to the sounds below since the further the sound traveled, the more diluted it got and the easier for his acute senses to decipher. From what he could deduce, the first few floors were silent; beyond that, he could hear nothing. Marvin lifted his wristwatch to his face; he had another five hours before sunrise--maybe after this he would see what Gotham's late night dining specials were like.

To find an entrance into the castle of Gotham's resident crimebuster was going to be a challenge which, to his knowledge, was not going to be done without causing some uproar; Marvin didn't, after all, travel with gadgets. With a bound, he parted from the roof and once more to the castle's side. Against a narrow groove he clasped a hand and swung himself to the nearest window; Marvin knew Grim had money, and money plus vigilantism plus a castle meant the windows were likely thicker than normal. What it didn't mean was a change in the weakspots of all windows; the edges. With closed fist, Marvin began, he localized the force of his blows against the sides of the thickened windows; he knew he would only have to create a single point of overbearing load for the window to cave. It was a mighty effort, and try as he might, he couldn't deafen the sound of his blows against the glass--even if he did finally get it to stress under pressure.

For all of his exertion, once Marvin did get the glass to crack, creating a point of entrance was less than ideal since trying to shatter the glass completely would not only be rude but it would also give away his presence if he had not already. With a firm push against the stress fracture, Marvin pushed the entire window backwards--where it promptly shattered against the floor below. Well, if Grim was here, Grim probably knew someone was breaking in--and she also probably had contraptions enough to deal with said intruders. Marvin swung his way into the castle's top floor where he soon looked for a place to hide. There was no point in trying to clean up the mess he made at his point of entrance; a swift glance at his surroundings and he could see no immediately shrouded spaces. Left with few options, he figured the best way to hide was to use what the castle's unlit sections provided--he would move in the natural shadows created by the castle's halls and the lack of natural sunlight.

"Note to self: build more gadgets."

--

An absolutely shrill alarm pierced the air of the hangar.

From where she was just beginning to move pieces into place Zoey abruptly stopped at the noise, combined with the heavy vibrating coming from both her wrist and back pocket. Without hesitation she dropped the metal plate with an almighty clang and sprinted to the lab, not only the source of the noise but lit up red with the alert on the computer. A touch to the keyboard had her phone and gauntlet computer stopping their vibration as numerous cameras came into view, too many to count, and even more not showing up. Only the ones that had motion were up, along with one pointed to an empty window. With glass beneath it.

A stab of fear quickly lanced through Zoey's chest, and she was already pulling on her gear even as her eyes moved over the other motion cameras. Many were pointed outside at various creatures - no alert was sounded for them due to not meeting the size requirement - which was actually both worrisome and impressive that the intruder avoided them, but by doing so he also avoided the glue turrets. The ones inside, however, were constantly swapping to highlight the movement in her home. Zoey paused.

"Seriously?!" It was hard to see at times considering he was sticking to the shadows, but Marvin rolled and he lost when he picked his entrance - the bedrooms were on the top floor. Bedrooms with her son. If he thought she wouldn't have every defense possible in place to protect him he was out of his mind.

Still, she deactivated the... messier defenses. Well, aside from those near David's room. She was willing to extend the olive branch to her intruder as long as he didn't get near her son. Fucking paranoid vigilante assholes.

Of course, Zoey was one to talk.

Still cursing under her breath Zoey left the Grim Grotto, nearly stomping up the steps. She was in most of her gear, but the hood on her coat was pulled down and her balaclava not on - though the gas mask and goggles were. Just in case.

By the time Grim had reached the top floor her steps had lost the stomp to them, back to the near glide that kept her steps so silent. The gauntlet on her wrist kept her updated on which motion cameras were being activated, not to mention the various ... defensive measures she ran into that were unsuccessful. Nets. Darts of tranquilizer. One of the hallways she passed sprayed anaesthetic! Tiger was talented, she had to admit, dodging everything - even if the deadlier options were deactivated it was still an impressive feat.

Of course, not having to dodge everything it was far easier for Grim to catch up, her voice modulator crackling with the strength of her voice as she began yelling within two hallways of him, not able to catch a glance of the Tiger quite yet but knowing he could hear her. Luckily David's room was sound proof, though they weren't quite near it yet.

"Marvin! Marvin! Did you seriously just fucking break my window because you can't use a god damned intercom system?!"

---

"Should probably try less invasive methods next time I'm uninvited.", Marvin thought to himself. For all Grim's money, these were some rather mundane 'traps'; if Marvin knew anything, she was being polite--as polite a person may be toward an unwelcome house guest. As he rolled, flipped, and contorted his frame around all sorts of ingenious inventory, he went over his options in his mind,

"Keep running and see where it takes me? Mmm, too risky. Tell her I'm actually here for a legitimate reason? Nah, not much of an option now." a tranquilizer dart flew inches away from his neck and stuck into the concrete wall beside. His eyes widened beneath the mask,

"SHIT!" amid trying to think his way out of his current perdicament and noting the irate grating of a machnized sounding voice only a few halls away, Marvin was beginning to re-think these attempts at befriending others in his line of work, regardless of whether his own methods of going about such befriending were ethically unsound. Marvin took a moment to regather himself while in the middle of dodging projectiles; he had become good at multi-tasking in his own right.

"Lots of corners," he tuned out the extraneous sounds of the traps and Grim's approaching voice,he listened to his feet pat against the stone floor, "natural bends, too. Entirely square? Maybe. If so, I'd be going in circles, metaphorically. Clearly this is the top floor; need to find the stairs--beware of traps there, too, Probably less childish defensive measures below." Environment was everything, and this was not Marvin's habitat; Grim had chased him through his turf, but his was natural--if a little urban--hers was manufactured; he would have to figure his way around this maze fast--but it was also large and rather spacious. He didn't know what kind of traps she might have installed for this floor alone, so being stagnant wasn't an option,

"Obviously cameras; not pressure sensitive from what I can tell. Would have activated the moment I landed in the bedroom. Some parts of the castle are dark, but even then they saw me. Autonomous motion sensitive cameras or manual?" Marvin knew that--at least for now--her traps were ineffectual against him, so he would test and see if they were set to a pattern or completely random. So, when another of the tranquilizers shot from its contraption, he ducked into a roll and when he stood up he ripped the tranquilizer from the wall. Now all that was left was to search for a camera.

--

Grim was beginning to get pissed off.

She had been up for close to thirty hours now, satellites were bullshit, she hadn't had a drink in hours, and worst of all, it was a school night! If Tiger woke up David she'd make sure he went back to New York neutered. Honestly he wasn't even turning around to talk to her, even after she had called out to him. What was the point to this? Waving his dick around to show that he was a serious vigilante after their little discussion? Was it some weird assassination attempt? Probably not the latter at least, though caution was always good when dealing with cocky little assholes with a chip on their shoulder.

Still, Grim had enough of this.

"Ready lockdown mode," Speaking into her glove's computer had a layout of her home show up on it, the floor she was currently on. Rather than initiate a complete lockdown Grim calmly followed the blinking dot's path that was moving in her home. Halfway down a hall the Sectional Lockdown was activated, her hearing the clang of dozens of metal plates.

Lockdown Mode was essentially a trap and flood. Foot thick metal plates covered the entrances to the halls, smaller half-foot thick ones covering windows and doors. With a section blocked off anaesthesia flooded the hallway - really, owning a medical company was so convenient - and to top it off and get some overkill going for Sectional Lockdown, any connecting hallways had a similar treatment in case they managed to escape the first section.

No need to flood her entire home with gas, after all. Well, not yet.

Approaching the first metal plate that would lead to the section Tiger was in Grim tapped away at her computer, raising that plate and stepping through. It closed behind her. Her gas mask kept the anaesthesia at bay as she hovered there, just outside the section that Tiger was in, to swap to her camera for that particular section.

Maybe while he was under she could get him neutered so he'd stop trying to mark everything.

---

He heard the clink of the metal plates in front and behind himself. Lockdown mode, nice; he had one himself. Then a gaseous substance--probably one of the sedative class. Good thing he had recently built in those filtration systems into his mask. Nonetheless, there was nowhere for him to go. It was a classic set up, traditional. Marvin admired such a layout but it was rather predictable, in how many movies was this system integrated into systematic defensive engineering? The answer was all of them. Especially for a castle. He came to a skidding stop. Being shut in while inside such a large space was strange, almost oxymoronic. There was no way to exit, but there was space a plenty to maneuver. Marvin stood from his crouched position; gone was his original, untinkered white cloth mask and bulletproof vest in favor of a darker gray streamline bodysuit fit. Marvin presumed her traps were still active, it would--at least to him--make sense for them to be; if she had learned nothing from him and if he had learned nothing from her, it was that they both always had failsafes for their failsafe's failsafe and a plan Z to boot.

Eager enough, Marvin wanted to know what her backup-backup plan might be. He didn't, of course, want to be on the recieving end of any theoretical failsafes she might have stored away--and this made him all the more alert, if not all the more frustrated (as if it wasn't his fault for this debacle in the first place)! Should he tell her to turn off the gas? No. It would give away his secret. His present disposition was ironic, all things considered: for once, he was the one being hunted.

--

Odd. Tiger wasn't down yet. Under the goggles Grim's eyebrows furrowed as she watched the screen on her gauntlet, waiting patiently. Not even a slight wavering to his step or movements. A groan escaped her lips, rattling in the mask as she raised a hand to rub a gloved finger against her temple. His mask must have filtration. Either that or could hold his breath really, really long. How frustrating. Actually the entire situation was frustrating.

Would it be murder to just leave him there to starve? Eh, probably shouldn't.

To be honest Grim didn't even want to fight him. Marvin had talent, he had proved that in New York and he had proved it now. With his intellect it was inevitable he ended up showing up in her home too after figuring out that Lady Arcana covered for her back in Elysium, Grim had even briefly contemplated asking him if he knew how to build satellites. Yet this action to trying to break in was a little... unstable. Still, she was reasonable.

Taking a deep calming breath, as well as a moment to tie her hair up just in case it did get violent, Grim finally lifted the metal plate barring her from Tiger - though the one behind him and the one behind herself remained firmly shut.

"Seriously Marvin, even Lady Arcana was polite enough to at least use the intercom system. You look like a lunatic right now."

---

"I am a grown man who dresses up like a cat and leaps across buildings in order to fight crime. Yes, I have been a lunatic for a long time. That is not why I am here, 'Grim'" beneath the mask, he grinned--he knew she knew that he knew who she was behind the mask, just as she knew who he was behind the mask, "but before I get to why I am here; you should probably erase public record of your existence. Do you know how easy it was to scour the web and find out who you were?"

--

"Kind of hard to erase public record of someone like me, Marvin. A bit like you, Mr. Championship Belt. Besides, twenty years and this is the first security breach I've had - and it was due to some magic asshole telling you my name. I think I'm pretty covered." A sigh escaped Grim's lips, and she once more tapped against her computer. The valves stopped spewing forth their payload, saving the anaesthetic tanks. "Now then, did you come just to test out my home defenses or was there a reason you're running around here at two in the morning? ... Huh, it's past midnight. This isn't some April Fool's thing is it? That's really poor taste."

--

"Honestly? A little of both. A man can't spend all his life stuck in some shabby lair designing things to fight crime and better the world, can he? Good for the soul to lighten up sometimes. Plus," Marvin gleaned the interior in full now that he wasn't dashing ferverently through the castle's halls, "you've got a clean set up around here. And I'm guessing if it were not for my unceremonious intrusion you'd probably be having yourself a nice glass of wine right now," he paused...

"you do have a place where you keep the wine, right? I don't pay friendly house visits for nothing." with just the two of them present--presumably--he had no reason to keep up the facade. Ultimately, for all hs psycho-analyzation and formal logical deduction skills, he knew when to relax--even if he had to do it while on a business trip.

"I figured after our foray into the World Unknown, you'd be looking for a countermeasure. Well, that and you did ask if there was any way to track magical energy... but we'll go with the first one since it makes me look smarter. I also figured I may as well be of service while I can. I have a feeling there's going to be some retaliation behind some lowdown shit that happened a few days ago so you may not get to see my wonderful mask around here for a while. That and well, you and I really can't be at each other's throats all the time; we could use our minds for good and shit." Marvin had let his more colloquial diction slip through his otherwise highbrow speech he normally used when the mask was on.

--

"Marvin I'm pretty sure like half the articles out there on me call me an alcoholic, of course I have a place to keep the wine." Grim tilted her head, watching The Tiger closely. He seemed to be letting his guard down now to a more relaxed posture, but considering his behaviour Zoey felt justified in still being a little wary. "We are cats and dogs, but you're right. I was working on something, before you... interrupted. Of course, now I have to decide if it's worth letting you into my labs considering you apparently like making my life difficult!" It wasn't a big stretch to assume that Marvin had figured out she had a lab of at least some sort, so she didn't feel too bad letting him know. Still, she threw her hands in the air in exasperation before bringing her hand back to the computer, letting the plates behind her raise up and beginning to walk to them - as well as lead Marvin to the lower floor.

"Come on, let's move out of the hallway so I can lower the plate and let the filtration deal with the anaesthetic. I still can't believe you broke my window."

--

"I can't believe you didn't invest in less archaic means of protection with all that money you have. Windows? Rather Victorian, don't you think?"

He could almost smell the remnants of tension pent up in her bones. Intuition told him she still didn't trust him. This was a logical reaction after all given the last fourty five minutes.

"The kid must be sleep. A wonder he didn't wake up during all that commotion. You know, you could send him my way some time and I can show him how to really defend himself for the next time those nice trinkets of yours fail." Marvin trailed behind her--he never strode next to anyone, it gave him enough time to react should a person get strange ideas.

--

"There's something to be said about the classics, besides - I have a kid, I'm not just going to lock him away in a giant castle. In anycase every single window in the castle is a solar window - does wonders for keeping the electric bill down." Once they were passed the metal plate Grim lowered it once more, and with that one once more began walking. A certain tension would never leave her back at being trailed, but she didn't protest Marvin's position. Instead she just took her goggles off, shaking out her hair seeing as she wasn't currently wearing the balaclava.

A couple of turns brought them to the stairs, on the next floor another hallway to the grand staircase. As they walked and talked however Grim's eyes narrowed, her perfectly shaped eyebrows furrowing a bit though she kept her gaze forward. Ah, but considering who it was saying it to her Tiger was probably just riling her up.

"You know I haven't had gadgets the entire time I've been fighting crime, right? They help, but I assure you I know the value of knowing how to defend yourself. Besides," Zoey finally glanced over her shoulder as she took down the mask covering her lower face, letting it rest around her neck. Her next words were of course her own, unmodulated. "I wouldn't want David learning to take uppercuts to his jaw for getting too cocky."

With her mouth uncovered Zoey gave a little grin, it small and tight but there to show less harm to her words. As they reached the ground floor she brought Marvin to the wine cellar door - he already knew her identity, he could be an ally. Worst comes to worst he steals some of her tech and runs off to New York. Like with Karen, Zoey once more used the eye scanner, but on stepping inside gestured to the numerous wine racks in the large cellar.

"Go ahead, pick us out one - I'm pretty sure you know by now money isn't really an object with me. Then I can show you the project myself and Arcana have started."

"I only drink Moscato." his deep hazel eyes scanned the racks lined with different wines. He, too, used to live the high life. These days, most of his money was re-invested in the stock exchange, mutual funds, and rennovating his base of operations. Once he found the Moscato wine he was looking for, Marvin removed it from the rack. He handed Grim the bottle with his right hand.

"I'm not that hard on my cubs. Although, I've never had a sidekick before so I suppose that's just wish fulfillment."

Hard as he was, he did share Zoey's parental mentality towards children; he fought crime in one of the worst neighborhoods in Brooklyn after all--and it was usually the kids he was protecting from the adults who manipulated them.

--

"Trust me, a sidekick would be easier to handle than a son. It was a subtle shift when I adopted him formally, but a shift none the less. Good choice, by the way," With the wine in hand Zoey reached out and picked another wine, but like the last time she had a guest in her home didn't pull it out all the way. Instead she pulled it right to the edge of the label and let it rest there, repeating the motion with four other seemingly random bottles in the room. On the last one being rested in the correct position there was a pause before the wall began to move, revealing the stair case beyond, and at the bottom the fingerprint scanner which opened up into the large cavern. The computer screen and hub to the left, the workshop across from them taking up most of the wall with an utter array of gadgets in half finished states on the wall and satellite diagrams on the surface, and to their red the labs - with two doors quietly situated in the back.

"Welcome to the Grim Grotto - David's name by the way, don't make fun of it around him. My hub, my workshop, my labs - and this little thing is what I'm asking for your help with." Zoey moved to the copier sized machine tucked right by the workshop for close viewing, the thing humming softly with power. In the stone depression on top the pill that Marvin himself had given her back in New York city floated quietly, spinning on its axis.

"A magical tracker, keyed to the signature in the pill. Don't get me wrong, the thing's working finally after Lady Arcana dropped by, but we're having... well, coverage issues."

--

"Not enough range? Hm."

He closed distance between himself and the bulky machine near the workshop.

"Well, my venture is that if this were a normal satellite it would function fine because satellite frequency band channels are designed to capture natural images and progressions. Far as I know, this is the first ever magic oriented satellite in existence, so the magic is a) disrupting the frequency or b) we need to create a unique channel for uh, detecting magic."

He paced about before he headed toward the large computer to their left, "Nice. I have one just like it. How powerful is she?"

--

"She?" A red eyebrow quirked once more before Zoey just shook her head, taking the mask and goggles off fully to put back in their places, followed by her coat and gloves. "Pretty powerful. The alert system is top notch, voice or touch activated, connects to all my wrist computers as well as my phone in case of emergency, not to mention the labs back there, and if there's a function it can't do it scours the web for anything that can - the tech guys for Blackrock showed me that one. Nice guys. Kind of nerds." Stepping toward the workshop instead Zoey gestured to the blue prints on it.

"Well right now it's interfacing with limited connectivity to the satellites already in orbit - I have a coverage of most of North America. Lady Arcana wants the world and I intend to give it. Since this is just the console I figured, well, let's just say that in my hangar in the back I'm all set up to start building a satellite. I just never have before. I could figure it out with time, but time isn't really something I'm comfortable giving if there's another attack soon." Zoey huffed, blowing some crimson strands of hair out of her face in irritation. "Plus if we're tracking magic we'll probably have to get Lady Arcana to power or channel something inside it to give it that honing sense to a more accurate degree."

--

'Well, I am the source of all magic' Marvin repeated aloud. Another simple deduction,

"Limited connectivity, it is a disrupting thing, then. Give and take, give and take, a satellite can only recieve what it is given. Give and take," he repeated aloud, a common occurrence when he began breaking apart the truth-trees in his head, "A if and only if B. If Arcana is the source of all magic, any magic present in the world comes from her, but it doesn't mean all magic present in the world has surfaced or is even strong enough to be recognized by satellite. Arcana is the source, everything magic is contingent on her--whatever is of X cannot function properly if X is removed or inconsistent in any single instance." he stared at the blueprint drawings on the screen as he thought to himself,

"Arcana powered the satellite once, that should be all that is necessary. Whatever magic which does exist in the world only needs a small portion of Arcana's energy--but a whole lot of frequency strength; we're talking something like two and a half gigahertz for one satellite to be able to cover the entire world. How we would generate such sound with only two people at the helm escapes me. Not to mention we would need more than one satellite considering we simply do not know if this magic energy has any averse side effects. I'm working on a small project myself with this energy here, and from what I've found, we only need to focus the energy; it's a constant, it doesn't die. More of this energy leaves too many unexplained and untestable variables, and I doubt we need more of those.

Although. . ."

Marvin went in search of a pencil...

"I bet NASA has a whole lot of unpaid interns looking for some long term career security."

--

The signature soft hum that often signalled Zoey was thinking rang out, the redhead staring off into the distance while tapping a painted fingernail against her lower lip.

"It certainly wouldn't be much of a strain on my resources to foot the bill for this. It's a bit more important than just some capitol anyway. If we could provide the outline it would certainly expediate things - of course we'd need a cover story. Research? I was thinking of buying a cellphone company but that doesn't really cover it as much as I'd like," Zoey huffed, raising a hand to run through her hair. Abruptly she turned her gaze to the bottle she had set on the workshop table, and after grabbing a rather sharp ice-pick looking device pried the cork of the wine open. If she was going to stay up even longer she was at least having a drink.

... Maybe the tabloids were right about her being an alcoholic.

"Here, we're going to be here awhile," Luckily she had both a clean and used glass down here - she had originally intended to use the clean one herself and had at the time just ended up drinking straight out of the bottle. Pouring Tiger a glass she nudged it to him before taking the already used one. Fuck it if she cared about mixing wines. Downing the entire thing Zoey poured another glass before finally pushing off from the worktable to go to Tiger's side and peer at his scribbles.

"Right then, let's see if we can give those nerds something to go on."

Hub City, Hell's Corner

Hell's Corner, the only place in Hub City that could be considered worse than The Wedge used to be. It wasn't so much that it had a "crime problem", but rather that crime had essentially become the economy here, such was its prevalence. For Lady Arcana, that made it difficult to know where she should even start. Hard drugs were exchanged openly on the street during both day and night, thugs brandished weapons without a second thought and no cop would come within a mile of the area.

In truth, being on patrol here almost felt like a joke. Her vision at night was excellent, as was her ability to discern details from high above. For Hell's Corner, however, that just meant she could see about ten different drug dealers on the same street, each openly competing with one another. They were so flagrant in their activities that they were openly waving their narcotics around!

She was also pretty sure she saw a six year old threaten one of said dealers with a pistol for trying to scam him.

How do you help such a place? It wasn't a matter of power, it was a matter of figuring out who here wasn't a violent criminal. After all, how could you cross a line when there was no line to begin with? Maybe she should just focus on something really big, in that case. Something that would have consequences beyond Hell's Corner.

Right, just ignore the drug dealers for now. Find something that everyone wasn't doing, something really, really dangerous.

"...Hm?" Arcana craned her head to the left, noting a large gathering of men by a partially burnt out warehouse off the main street. It straddled the line between Hell's Corner and the Old Manufacturing District where her dad worked. What made their little gathering stand out more than anything was that half the men there were wearing pretty snazzy suits.

That half were definitely not gangbangers.

Landing quietly off to the side of the warehouse, Arcana listened closely to the conversation between the sixteen individuals she counted.

"Look, we've got AK's, Uzi's, you name it. You want a leg up on the competition? Want to rule Hell's Corner? Your ticket's in these crates...if you're willing to pay our fair price," One of the well-dressed men explained, his words laced with honey.

"A hundred grand? Man, you're tripping balls," The gangbanger he was conversing with replied. "If we had that money, you think we'd be livin' here?"

The man - whom she at this point presumed was a mafioso - cupped his chin in thought, though she had a feeling he was faking it. "Maybe we can work out another deal, then. See, we have a product we'd like your assistance in distributing to your fine community."

"Product?" The gangbanger quirked a brow. "You're wanting us to push something for you?"

"In a manner of speaking. We give you the guns, and in exchange, you help us open Hell's Corner to a whole new market," the mafioso smiled, gesturing to the warehouse. Karen immediately turned and floated upwards until she could see through the nearest window.

...Girls. Clustered tightly together, each and every one of them looking terrified. She felt her blood chill as her breathing ceased entirely. There was no reason to wait any longer.

The first one to go down was the mafioso who was clearly in charge of the operation, a swift blow to the solar plexis knocking him back a good fifteen feet and rendering him unconscious. The remaining fifteen were left standing in a stunned silence for a brief moment as Lady Arcana glanced behind her at the gangbangers, a spark of electricity arcing from her eye.

"F-f-fuck," the gang leader backed away, "I...I wasn't gonna do it, alright? None of us are down with that shit!"

His fellow gangbangers had already started fleeing the scene, and when he realized this, he quickly followed. That was fine...tonight, they weren't the ones she was here for. No, a bunch of moronic gangbangers were nothing compared to this lot.

Unlike the local thugs, however, these guys seemed to be from out of town. She knew that by their accents.

And because they weren't running.

The night was soon alight with the flash of gunfire, as shot after shot was sent her way. She'd done this old song and dance so many times before, and while these guys carried military grade weaponry, it naturally made little difference. Slamming the side of a mafioso's head into the concrete, she snapped his AK-47 over her knee even as bullets ricocheted off her.

With her superior control over her speed and strength compared to four months ago, disabling the seven criminals took only a matter of seconds. She could even throw actual punches now, instead of the palm strikes she once relied on. When swift jab to the sternum sent the last of their group crumpling to the ground, Lady Arcana immediately turned her focus to the young women inside.

They were shackled together like animals. It was hard to imagine how anyone could be this cruel, to do something like this to another human being.

Reaching out to grasp their chains, she easily snapped each and every one. To her surprise, the girls seemed completely calm and at ease, never displaying any sense of surprise at her abilities. One of the older ones even immediately stepped forward, a...rather smug grin on her face?

"Oh, thank you great hero for saving us," she smirked, extending her arms out to either side. "Whatever would we have done without the great Wizard to swoop in and ruin everything!"

Before she could respond, the women screamed. She really screamed, to the point where the glass in windows of the warehouse instantly shattered. Wincing her eyes part way shut at the minor throbbing in her skull, Arcana felt her feet leave the ground as she went sailing back into the mafioso's moving van, slamming into the side with enough force to cave the side of the vehicle in.

Peeling her eyes open while shaking away her disorientation, Lady Arcana watched as the women stepped forward, their human forms cracking like an eggshell as bird-like wings and talons emerged from their backs and limbs, their remaining skin turning a light grey. When their transformation was complete, Karen could only describe what she was seeing as a flock of harpies

"Harpies? So wait, the girls were the sexual predators?" Lady Arcana remarked in astonishment, climbing to her feet as the creatures took to the skies. She'd been reading up on her mythological creatures at Sam's insistence, and she didn't like anything she'd heard about these gals.

Lifting into the air, Lady Arcana launched herself into the nearest harpy, seizing it by the throat. Before she could follow up on this, however, she once more felt the powerful force of their ear-piercing screams hit her from behind, as several joined together to bombard her with their weathering song. It made her stomach turn, and in her state of nausea she was unprepared for the talon that clocked her across the jaw, sending her plummeting into the warehouse below.

Smashing through the roof with enough force to literally bring the entire place down on top of her, Arcana found herself buried beneath many tons of rubble.

Okay, this was a lot more than she was used to dealing with, that much was clear. They were using group tactics against her, so she needed to be smart here. Physically they were much stronger than a normal human, but still nothing to her. Those screams, though...

"Right, that's a plan. Enough wasting time, then!" Arcana exclaimed, bursting from the rubble in one swift upward motion. The Harpies were now gone without a trace, however. A cursory glance also revealed that the mafiosos were also missing.

"Shit," Arcana swore, grasping her head in frustration. "They weren't planning on fighting me, they just wanted to stun me long enough to escape..."

And they succeeded. Now there were a bunch of a Kentucky Fried Rapists running around in Hub City. What the hell was she supposed to do now?

11:32 PM, March 14
Gotham City Stadium, Gotham City

Whispers filled the streets of Gotham.

"Did you hear?"

"Anarkee struck again."

"Why haven't the police stopped her?"

"The cops are useless against this."

"Are the streets still safe?"

"The streets have
never been safe."

"Grim should've caught her by now."

Another strike by the Angel of Anarchy, another deed added to a long list of numerous others. Another life lost. Multiple injured. And unknown to anyone but three people in the city, Grim wasn't even in Gotham when it happened.

After having spent the night wading through the sewers of Hub City Grim barely had the chance to send word to Jaina and David that everything went well before she was flooded with alerts that something had been found outside Gotham City Stadium. Freshly found there was little details, and it took a surprising amount of time for Jaina to get back to her on what happened. It took an hour to get word back, just as the Grim Jet had been turned off nestled in the hangar of the labs with Zoey already heading to the Grimobile.

"Anarkee. Toxin bomb. You're not getting near here today."

The message was clear in Jaina's short, blunt way. The damage was done and the scene was on lockdown for now. A curse had rolled off Grim's lips, and despite knowing there was little she could do she had stalked to the Grim Grotto, so dubbed by her son, to absolutely stalk any hint of news about the scene.

Scraps were leaked, bits and pieces. A body was found, then some kind of riot broke out between investigators, and now the area was cordoned off. Grim's skin almost itched knowing there was a crime scene out there, innocents being hurt, and she was useless at the moment. She rarely worked during the day, cameras and cellphones rampant in this modern age. While she knew some things were worth breaking that policy, an already dead crime scene wasn't one of them.

Besides, she was exhausted from Lady Arcana and the Question joining her on the hunt for the Electrocutioner, though their help was of course appreciated. Grim ended up joining her son for breakfast and informing him of the plan before retiring to get some much needed sleep.

Now the hour was late, and it was time to go. Suited up and in the Grimobile, a sleek and dark car that was surprisingly ordinary. The word was subjective of course, as the car was obviously expensive and didn't belong in the poorer parts of town, but the aspects that made it Grim's vehicle were hidden. Guns, a winch, an all-terrain mode...

David certainly wouldn't be using it to learn how to drive.

Grim's fingers tapped against the steering wheel, the vehicle parked quietly beside a building across from the Stadium. Large canvases had been hung up to prevent people from seeing passed the parking lot, though lights still obviously shone behind it, and police tape cordoned off the area with a patrol slowly going around the perimeter.

About a block away another car pulled up, and when the patrol went to pass it stopped beside them. Words were exchanged and after a moment the police car pulled a U-turn and disappeared into the distance. A pixie-haired blonde woman stepped from the other car, and with little hesitation other than a sweep of the area moved right toward the Grimobile.

"Lieutenant Jasper," Grim's voice modulator smoothly greeted the short blonde woman as she approached, leaning into the window that was rolled down. She nodded back, not even looking to Grim but rather back at the still concealed crime scene.

"How has Blackstar been?" Grim rolled her eyes beneath the mask as Jaina focused on David immediately, despite him not even being there. A greeting would've been nice, but as the unofficial 'Aunt' of her son she had a one track mind.

"Still wanting to fight crime more than focus on school."

"He becomes more your son every day, then." Grim merely snorted in response before finally opening the door as the Lieutenant stood back up, and in quick strides the two slipped out of the alley and headed to the parking lot.

"How long do we have?"

"Half an hour. Sent him on a coffee break to 'sharpen his mind' while I covered for him."

"And let me guess, he jumped at any reason to shirk his duties since you're the only competent and good cop on the force."

"There have been a surprising amount of good recruits lately. I think it's your doing, you know. Things are changing from when you were a tee-"

"So what happened here?" Grim abruptly cut Jaina off, who merely shook her head as though the exchange had happened many times before and looked forward. They had just passed into the area the large canvases had been covering, Jaina hanging back as Grim moved forward to the scene. Beneath the goggles the redheads eyes roamed the scene, taking in the pool of dried blood on the ground where no doubt a body once rested, smaller splatters of crimson surrounding the area, and of course the message written in a hauntingly red script that adorned the wall.

BEWARE the rise OF the GRAVES

"The calls came in pretty quick about this actually - the blood was still wet. When CSI went to move the security guard it set off a bomb that threw out airborne particles. Everyone within a certain distance to the scene lost control of themselves - or, I should say, they lost control of their emotions. Turned on each other in a rage, or out of fear, or a combination." Grim paused, throwing a glance over her shoulder to where Jaina was hanging back, arms crossed by one of the lights.

"Is that why you're staying back there?"

"Better safe than sorry, there's a reason the place hasn't been cleaned up aside from the body - not everyone runs around in the dead of night in a gasmask." Grim merely rolled her steel-blue eyes beneath the mask, but focused back on the letters. It was obviously the biggest thing about the crime scene, and more than that? A message. To her. The wolf head, though crude, couldn't be construed as anything but hers. Still, why? What did it mean?

"Could be a necromancer." Jaina looked fairly amused at the look that was shot her way, for although Grim's mask kept her friend expressionless she instantly knew that Zoey was glaring at her from under there.

"Don't even joke about that, I've seriously had enough of this magic bullshit." Jaina raised her hands in mock surrender, letting Grim go back to her examination. The UV light on her goggles was flicked on, but aside from the obvious there wasn't much.

Something about the message kept drawing her gaze though. Beware the rise of the graves, certain words capitalized. Beware of graves. Did it mean something? It was hard to say with someone as mentally unstable as Anarkee obviously was. Something about it kept niggling at the back of Zoey's mind too, like she should be able to connect it to something...

"Don't worry, it's not the first freak in a mask you've dealt with. You'll get her." The frown didn't leave Zoey's face as she continued peering up at the words, a combination of spray paint and blood from the life lost here tonight. Jaina was right, this wasn't even the first time some mentally unstable person has pulled a stunt in her city, but still something about this seemed wrong. Sent a chill up her spine.

Zoey could only hope the graves in the message didn't turn out to be hers.

The Kryptonian could hear the whispers, the people around them did gave him all the information he needed but something still felt off. There was a hidden motivation, something he wasn't telling him. Superman met Donovan's gaze with a ferocity in his own eyes feeling all the more tempted to crush his brothers before his eyes and kill the Irishman right here and then but if there was a time for restraint, it was now. "I could easily kill you and you still want to make threats?" Superman questioned. Even after all that has happened, despite all their injuries Donovan remained defiant. "I'm plenty of things but I'm not a murderer. Not yet."

Sirens grew louder and louder and it wasn't long till the local police had finally arrived. Superman eyed their arrival and he could see the concerned look, their itch to draw their weapons out of fear. Recognizing that the situation was no longer his Superman casually dropped the brothers he held high off the ground, letting them crash into the concrete road with little concern while slowly lifting his boot off Donovan's chest. "I'm giving you a chance to rethink everything" Superman announced, deciding that a private conversation with the thugs was over. "I'm shutting it down. All of it." The Krypotnian turned and took a step towards the crowd. Despite having their full attention and various cell phones recording the situation, they all subconsciously took a step back as if they themselves were in the alien's target list. "To any... 'tough guys' that want to go around and start shooting each at other, I'm giving you all a chance to reconsider your actions. I'm here to stay and I'm not going to play nice to the next bunch of assholes that start shooting at people, I can promise you that." Another attempt to address the masses. His message would be in the news, it would be spread but either way it was either going to convince criminals to stay low, or take up Superman's challenge allowing him to find them.

Superman took one last look at the crowd, standing tall, strong and defiant. They would utter their insults or sing his praises but in the end he wasn't concerned with their opinion. Maybe he wasn't doing it as 'cleanly' at the others but whatever actions he would take from now on would be of no hesitation. Somebody had to make a clear, strong demonstration and enforce it so why couldn't be him? In one last showing of power Superman leaped into the air and accelerated into the sky with such force it was if the sky itself was split open leaving the crowd stunned below.

If it wasn't obvious before, it was clear now... Superman would be watching and yet another "super hero" was making his mark on the world.

Hub City Country and Polo Club

Tim always found it a little hard to believe that there was a part of Hub City where you could tear around a field on horseback just for fun without the risk of accidentally trampling some hobo looking for a place to sleep, but then again the armed guards out front probably had something to do with it. The whole thing made Tim feel pretty uneasy and reflective whenever he entered the place, considering it was a pretty solid reminder of how weird and lucky his whole life was that parts of it had to be backed up by guards visibly packing heat.

That feeling usually faded pretty fast though, considering Tim had been coming here for as long as he could remember and some of the staff here had even known his father when he was Tim's age. Beside, Tim liked Polo a lot. Sure, it was the ultimate rich boy sport so it meant getting matched up with some of the more obnoxious kids from school and dressing like even more of a dweeb to ride, but it was also riding around on horses while hitting stuff with a hammer and that was undeniably awesome. Plus, it had good food. So all in all even if by the end of the day he was usually too worn out to move, Tim really liked going there.

"Son, I need to talk to you about some things..."

Except on days when his Dad used it as a staging ground to start conversations he was uncomfortable with. Then he definitely hated it. He was too tired to really argue or be evasive since they were sitting down at a table after more than half an hour's worth of chukkers, probably just as planned.

"Look, it's about all the fights you've been getting into.

"Dad this is a crappy April Fools' joke-"

"-Not my worst, but before you say anything else I want you to listen. Just think about the kind of people we are, the way we raised you. My love of a good lawyer joke aside, part of why I love your mother is that she's probably one of the last honest lawyers in the whole city. She believes in justice coming from something more important than your fists and you know that already. At my job, what people choose to say and when and how they choose to say it, well that makes or breaks just about everything. The power and value of words, reasoning and truth are important to this family. What I'm trying to say is if you see something really bad happening, I only want you resorting to violence when everything else fails."

"If you didn't want me to fight, how come you had me learn how? If I can stop something right now shouldn't I do it?"

"You were supposed to learn to protect yourself, not beat up kids whose parents should be doing a better job. I had you take the sort of lessons you did because the world is a big, unpredictable place with even more unpredictable people in it, this city especially and I want you prepared for the worst outcomes. But I also want you to try for the best outcomes."

Tim just kept quiet, irritated at being sermonized at but not really able to find anything to disagree about.

Anyways, letcturing agitates my sweet-tooth. Lemme see if they got any new cake in, or maybe some ice cream."

"Aren't you supposed to be watching your blood sugar?"

"What your mom and my pre-diabetes don't know won't hurt either of them. Besides ya gotta live while you can, kiddo!"

Tim couldn't help smiling and decided that was one thing they could agree on for now.

April 13th, 4:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
The Astral Plane, Downtown Manhattan.

Lord Death Man's body was deep in meditation in the Crime Castle of Coney Island. His mind, however, had wandered to a museum in Manhattan. Here, the greatest criminals of history were enshrined in a temple of thievery. Unseen, Death Man walked through the walls of the building. A number of security cameras. Alright, that was expected. These were valuable historical artifacts, even removed from the criminal context of their use. He needed to know where those were. And nobody could see him on the astral plane anyway. He set to work memorizing the layout of the museum, down to the guard patrols. The exhibits were tempting targets indeed, but even he'd have trouble even getting past all the cameras outside. However, as he stepped through the "under construction" bit of the museum, he discovered a much easier way into the museum. He spent hours poring over each and every detail of the grounds, before discovering the easy access to a 3-way intersection in front of the museum... and the manhole cover smack in the middle of it. That would make the escape child's play.

Immediately upon awakening, he put his efforts towards figuring out a few shipping schedules...

June 3rd, 12:30 PM
The International Museum of Crime, Downtown Manhattan

It was the opening ceremony for a new exhibit at the Museum of Crime, showcasing a number of items on loan from the Tokyo Museum of Crime. Zenigata Heiji's coins, the cauldron in which they boiled Goemon, and a camera left behind during a heist by Arsene Lupin were among the items on display alongside statues of the men in question. However, the tour group reached a rather large exhibit, backed by a portrait of a laughing man in a skull mask and matching black costume throwing his cape back with one hand and holding a massive jewel aloft on the roof of a train with the other. There was a book of Manga called "Kaitou Death Man," a number of elegantly written notices of intent, a series of replicas of the masks he wore throughout World War 2. In the center, a statue stood covered with a white sheet.

"...Many of James Moriarty's crimes, however, were completely fictional, created by Sir Author Conan Doyle while collecting Dr. Watson's stories of Sherlock Holmes to fill in certain gaps. We now come to a collection on loan from the Tokyo museum of crime, detailing the exploits of the eccentric 'super-criminal' known as Death Man. Complete with a recreation of his original costume."

The guide removed the sheet from the display, showing the man in the portrait in a jovial pose, cane raised high overhead.

The high society types socially obligated to come to this sort of function looked around, some feigning interest, others looking at the exhibits in question with earnest curiosity. The reporters present were taking notes on the display.

"Death Man was a self-described phantom thief, who began operating in the 1910's. He would often rob museums and noble homes, but his most ambitious crime was breaking into the Imperial Treasury of Japan, where he stole a few hundred million yen in gold, jewels, and other valuables. In modern terms, that would be almost three billion dollars!"

A lady in a red dress gave a derisive laugh, obviously having already started the day-drinking. "Oh please... That costume is absolutely ridiculous! Doesn't he know Halloween is an American holiday?"

Ignoring her, the guide continued. "...We have on display the original notices of intent to burglarize. Death Man's MO often included a warning that he intended to rob a given facility. We are also displaying a list of the treasures confirmed stolen by Death Man. While working for the Imperial government as a special agent in World War 2, he was sent to the armory of Saint Petersburg, where he stole the plans for a new Russian tank... as well as one of the Faberge Eggs. Towards the tail end of the war, he stole the Amber Room being transported on a Nazi train bound for Berlin. Of course, even Japan was not safe from his criminal ambitions- it is confirmed that he stole the treasure of the Awa Maru, and believed by several prominent figures in Japanese law enforcement that he stole the Hanjo Masamune."

"Pfffft!"

One of the reporters pinched the bridge of his nose and glared at the woman in the red dress. "Miss Weatherby, I'd ask you to calm down and let the man speak."

"Awww, c'mon! He looks like a moron in that suit! How could a man dressed like that sneak in anywhere? Let alone steal like... like... anything!"

At this moment, the statue moved, bringing the cane down on the back of the tour guide's head with a mighty whack... leading the gathered crowd to gasp in shock as he collapsed to the floor. Death Man locked eyes with the woman, pointing the cane at her.

"Oh, far more easily than you'd think, my dear!"

Death Man jumped down from the plinth, stretching. One of the security guards scrambled for his pistol as people began screaming.

"In fact, I've been inside this museum for about a week! Along with my henchmen! BEHOLD, MY SKULL-MEN!"

With that, the retreating crowd found their path blocked as the ceiling tiles shattered, dozens of men in similar skull masks and jet-black unitards popping out with a resounding cry of "YEEEEEEEEE!" and dropping directly in their path... and the remainder immediately set themselves upon the guards. As they struggled, one of the skull-men held out a bag.

"Now! Please put your valuables- that is to say, wallets, purses, jewelry, you can keep your phones and your tacky clothes- in the bag!"

As the minions collected the loot, Death Man looked over the display of his handwriting as he headed to a nervous reporter and looked straight into the video camera. This, of course, was his real reason for such an open crime.

"Is... is this a live feed?"

"N-No sir. I... Five o' clock news."

Death Man sighed and shrugged. "Good enough, I suppose."

With that, he pointed to the camera.

"This is a message for everyone in the world. I have learned that, during my absence from the public eye, there has been very little sensational crime! Well, let the crooks of the world consider this a remedial lesson- and the headmaster is..."

"Don't limit yourself to the conventional! Conventional crime is boring. It's overdone. I, Lord Death Man, the Mikado of Mayhem, the Shogun of Sorrow, urge the criminals of the world- with the advent of these bizarre heroes, it's time to step up your games!"

Death Man then proceeded to throw his cape over his shoulder.
"You rob a bank, knock over a gas station? You get a one-day blurb on page six at best! But if you steal a train... a battleship... vatican gold?! You're the headline! You want to make history?! Codenames! Costumes! Make your mark on history, and some day you might have a museum exhibit too!"

"Lord Death Man! We've got the goods."

The Skull-Man with the bag of jewelry, wallets, and purses, hands the sack over to Death Man, who opens it to the camera.

"These are the spoils of the Super-Criminal! Remember that, as I begin my cross-country crime spree! Death Man... Out!"

With that, he knocks the camera out of the cameraman's hands and heads for the front door, to a closed intersection where sewer work is currently being done... and jumps straight into the manhole, followed by the skull-men just as the police round the corner! Flashing sirens, gunshots, and shouting policemen were all Lord Death Man heard as he dropped onto the jetski between the tied-up sewer workers and gunned it, dashing south. All in all a clean getaway- his henchmen that remained in the museum, actually his mystically generated clones, would soak up bullets from the police. The fact the faceless minions would all be genetically identical was going to be a real mindfuck for some poor mortician. For now, though, LDM contented himself with the knowledge his message had been delivered. Now all that he needed to do... was wait.

April 4th, 7:48 AM
Hub City

Karen hadn't slept since the previous night. How could she, knowing that those things were loose in her city? She'd scoured the skies in search of them, flying over every square inch of the city...but they had apparently gone to ground. With their ability to disguise themselves as humans, this made finding them nearly impossible. Their human stats also evidently suppressed their arcane imprint to a degree, as she hadn't felt their otherworldly nature until they transformed. If her natural ability to sense them wasn't sufficient, she only knew one other way to potentially flush them out of whatever holes they were squatting in.

Holding her burner phone to her ear, Karen chewed on her lip nervously. She hoped that Zoey wouldn't mind her calling this early on a Saturday, but it really was kind of an emergency. Hopefully she was high enough in the sky, too, that nobody would be able to snap an odd photo of Lady Arcana making a call on her cellphone.

---

April 4th, 8:48 AM EST
Kasimir Castle, Gotham City

"Nicole, I swear to god-" Cursing, tired, and mildly hungover it took Zoey a moment to grab the phone on her beside table from under the multiple blankets that encompassed her bed. She didn't like the cold. Staring at the screen it took another moment to register that this was not her work phone. Well, at least not her civilian work phone. That contact definitely wasn't her personal assistant, either. She quickly cleared her throat of any morning roughness before the redhead thumbed the answer call button and brought the device to her ear.

"Lady Arcana, what can I do for you?"

--

"Um, Grim? I...have a bit of a problem," Lady Arcana explained, her unease apparent in her tone. "Well, about ten of them, actually."

Scratching the side of her face, Karen struggled to find the right words to explain everything that had happened in a way that would make the severity of the situation apparent. "Last night I was on patrol in Hell's Corner - it's a really nasty place in Hub City - when I happened upon what looked like a weapon's deal at a warehouse between some mobsters and a local gang."

"Except, it wasn't just weapons they were trading in. I saw that they had a bunch of girls chained together inside the warehouse, and they wanted the gang to help sell them to the locals in Hell's Corner in exchange for the weapons," she recalled the events of the previous night in as much detail as she felt was needed. While it was unclear if the mobsters were going to play any further role, it was best to not leave out anything that could potentially be a clue.

Glancing up to make sure she was staying well below the blanket of smog that forever hovered over Hub City, she continued. "The gangbangers ran when I showed up, and I quickly knocked out all of the mafiosos...but that was when things got weird."

"When I went to free the girls, they seemed...eerily calm, if not irritated at me. Then, one of them screamed. And I mean louder than the people in Elysium did! So loud that it sent me flying back into a van. When I looked up, all ten of them had transformed into..." she paused, knowing this was going to sound rather crazy to any rational person, even if the past four months perhaps softened the oncoming blow, "...harpies."

Closing her eyes, Lady Arcana prepared to conclude her bizarre tale. "They attacked me, and with their screams managed to stun me long enough to escape. I think they've all gone underground somewhere in Hub City now, and I haven't been able to locate any of them."

---

Zoey's breath caught in her throat at the first mention of girls, releasing in a shuddering exhale as her eyes closed. As Karen continued to speak Zoey was already getting up and moving around her bedroom, picking out anything she would need before going down to gear up and get in the jet. That's what this was leading to wasn't it? Going to Hub City to hide a body for Lady Arcana?

... Oh. Nope, that wasn't it.

"... Harpies." Zoey stated calmly, having paused in getting her things together. She pinched the bridge of her nose. "I'm not sure how I could - right, no, harpies are probably magical, like every other thing that's happened lately. The tracker, I understand. I'll get geared up, I can be there in an hour. Just keep an eye out until then."

Thank god the jet had a coffee maker, she was going to need it.

---

"Will do," Lady Arcana replied, clicking her phone off.

Landing gently atop the Whizz Radio Tower, she folded her arms and calmly stared out over a city where monsters lurked in the shadows. She felt a little bad for having to ask for Grim's help with this...after all, such a thing was actually her job. She should have probably went to Sam first with this, in fact, but...she knew the black Bombay would've probably chewed her out for letting them escape in the first place.

She really didn't need that right now.

April 4th, 9:03 AM
Hub City

Between getting her things together, making sure the castle was going to be fine in her absence, and then the flight itself it took Grim a little over an hour to reach Hub City. A quick check of her phone on where Hell's Corner was had her moving the jet toward that area, 'parking' on top of a nearby industrial area's rooftop out of the way. Her motorcycle took her the rest of the way, the specialized machine easily traversing the dilapidated roofs to the area.

Honestly, the place reminded Grim a little of some of the slums in Gotham, back when she first moved there. Of course from what she understood of Hub City this place was just considered a lost cause rather than the police being utterly corrupt. Still, back to business. With her motorcycle idling beneath her on the roof opposite a collapsed warehouse she could only assume was the site of the battle Grim sent a quick text to Lady Arcana that she arrived before focusing on the computer built into her gauntlet, interfacing with the main computer located back in her labs to check the tracking device. Much like Gotham this place was brightly lit with magic, especially with no specific signature to track. Idly, Zoey wondered how much of that magic belonged to Lady Arcana and possible the plant's influence.

Maybe with any luck she could find something from the harpies to track, otherwise this was still just a wild goose chase. Well, wild harpy chase.

"Oh, starting at the warehouse was smart!" Lady Arcana chirped, stepping beside Grim only a moment after her text message had been sent. Offering a warm smile to her new friend, she quickly focused on the matter at hand. "I was knocked into that warehouse, and by the time I flew back out...nada."

Taking a step closer to the scene of last night's altercation, Arcana cupped her chin on thought. Her eyes drifted along the ground for several moments, searching for anything that might tip them off to their location. "We need something with their arcane 'signature', right?"

Taking another step towards the warehouse, she reached out and grasped what looked to be a long, sallow feather. It wasn't the only one on the ground. Standing again, she presented it to Grim. "This should work, right?"

Grim most definitely did not jump when Lady Arcana's voice suddenly came from her side, and the sudden rigidness in her shoulders was of course not from clamping down on the reflex to jab her elbow into the appearance of someone beside her. Rolling her suddenly stiff shoulders to loosen the muscles Grim glanced to Arcana with a slight nod to greet her.

"Right, something either from them or created by them," The vigilante watched the other woman, nodding approvingly at being presented with the feather. "That will work. I might have to tweak it a little to track the type of magic rather than the specific signature, but I already connected the tracker to my computer hub so everything should be fine on that end." Holding her hand out Grim took the feather and bent it in half to fit into the compartment in the gauntlet, nestled next to the sterile cotton swabs ready for use. It took only a few moments for the lights on the small computer screen to go from lighting up Hub City to only one point. A few taps had it changing to a handful of them, spread throughout the city.

"Look like we have a match. This will lead us to the general area they're in, but considering what they looked like when you found them it'll probably end up being a game of hide and seek." Grim tapped one of the spots on the computer. "Here's the closest one, shall we?"

Lady Arcana quickly nodded, "Yeah, they've enjoyed giving me the slip for more than long enough I'd say."

They were probably all cackling their stupid birdy brains out about outwitting her earlier. Well, she'd show em'! Lifting off the ground, she offered a quick "thumbs up" to Grim indicating that she would be following her lead in this case. After all, she was the one with the tracker. While her eidetic memory wouldn't let her forget the image on the screen, it was - as her friend said - merely a general location. Things might change as they drew closer.

"I should warn you, by the way: these things are much stronger than a normal human, and their screams could easily deafen you and shatter bones."

"Yes, their lungs are legendary, I remembered a tale of them from high school - which reminds me," Grim took a moment to reach into an inside pocket of her jacket, tossing a small plastic package to Arcana. Inside was a pair of bright orange ear plugs. "I brought two, but if they scream at me I'll already be hurting. Might save you a headache at least." With that done Grim revved the engine on her motorcycle, it roaring before settling into the quiet purr that accompanied most of her bigger gadgets.

Not having to worry about Lady Arcana keeping up Grim took off - once more using the advanced and sophisticated tech of her motorcycle to use the rooftops of Hub City as her own personal highway to mask their approach. It didn't take more than ten minutes to reach their destination, even with having to double check the tracker once they got closer - the dot hadn't moved, but it was hard to say if it was just one or a couple overlapping.

Just in case she hadn't reiterated it enough to herself yet, then Grim was so effin' cool!! Her gadgets, her bike...everything she did just screamed sleek badassery! Even though she had the power of the Gods inside of her, Lady Arcana couldn't help but be a little jealous of all the amazing toys her friend had. Hopefully one of these days she would let her take a ride in her jet!

But they had business to attend to now.

Within ten minutes they had arrived at the general location indicated by the tracker. It was in, interestingly, the Chinatown district of Hub City. While she had flown over it plenty of times in the past, Karen had never actually been here before, and so seeing up close was pretty sauce!

Turning to Grim, she stared down at the busy streets of the oriental community. "What do you think the best approach to finding them would be?"

Grim hummed quietly, eyes roaming along the streets absolutely filled with people. She never did like crowds.

"We could survey the streets from the air but considering that you said these things could disguise themselves as humans we don't even know what we're looking for. The best bet to flush them out might be walking the streets, but if we startle them it could put many innocent people in danger." Grim huffed lightly, eyes narrowing behind the mask. "I really need to put a magic sensor in my goggles or something," The vigilante muttered under her breath, before gesturing to the roofs.

"Might be better to see if we can find anything from the rooftops so we're not putting anyone in danger just yet, but worst come to worst we descend and look for them by foot." A slight shrug. "More important than me not liking my picture taken after all.

Lady Arcana nodded in agreement with Grim's suggestion. For now they would stick to the roofs and avoid the prying eyes of the hundreds going about their daily business. But that still left the question of where they should look. They could be literally anywhere here, and in such a densely populated area of the city -

"Wait," Arcana's face paled lightly, as an idea forced its way into her head. These harpies had initially disguised themselves as sex slaves. That avenue had been busted by herself, but the easiest transition from it would logically be... "The Brothel."

Lady Arcana's voice was flat and monotone as she spoke those words, the mere idea of having to stroll into such a place causing her face to flush. She was really afraid of what she would see there, but...this was her duty. Like, her actual job as The Wizard. Helping people, being a heroine, that was something she chose to do, something she loved doing...but stuff like this here was the whole reason Shazam had chosen her. She couldn't back down.

And there was little doubt in her mind that she was right on her hunch. The closest group from the warehouse fled right into Chinatown, the only place in Hub City widely known to have illegal "Massage Parlors". It seemed so painfully obvious now.

Swallowing a lump in her throat, Karen hardened her face and tugged her hood partway over her eyes. "Alright, let's go look, then."

A red eyebrow quirked beneath the goggles at the suggestion, and although Grim nodded slowly in acknowledgement of the suggestion she tilted her head slightly to look at Arcana. It was easy to see the other heroine was flustered, even just from the red that crept up on her. To Zoey's eyes even tugging her hood on didn't hide it all. After a moment Grim looked forward, back down at the streets with a thoughtful hum.

"Good point. I'll handle this and you can head to the next section? You should have a much easier time of it with them separated." The modulator kept Grim's voice the usual emotionless timbre, no inflection that she had caught on drifting into it. It would be difficult, but Grim was confident in her own abilities if it spared Arcana having to do something she didn't wish to.

Lady Arcana looked up in shock at Grim's suggestion that she handle the brothel alone. Had she been that obvious in her discomfort? Man, she really needed to learn how to get a handle on her feelings. She was supposed to be this big super-wizard, the Lord of all Magic, and here she was red-faced like a school girl. Which, even if that actually was the case didn't mean it was alright. She had to be better than what was merely expected of her.

"There could be two, maybe even three Harpies there, Grim," Karen reminded her softly, not wishing to come across as condescending. Closing her eyes, she steadied her breathing. "No, we're in this together. I can't afford to be so easily shaken."

"Thank you, though. It means a lot that you would be willing to take such a risk just for my childish discomfort," she offered the other heroine a warm smile, not wanting her to think for even a second that she wasn't grateful. Lifting off the ground again, she began surveying the signs on the building. Thanks to the Intellect of Mnemosyne, she could effortlessly read the Mandarin writing that was omnipresent, although many stores had their names also displayed in English anyway.

Finally she saw it: Eternal Springs Massage Parlor.

"....That's probably it, huh?" Arcana muttered, floating down to the entrance. Several men nearby gasped in shock when they saw her, immediately walking in the other direction as if they'd "never been anywhere near any brothel, Ms. Arcana ma'am." She didn't know why they were so nervous, it's not like she would beat them up for going here.

Waiting a moment for Grim to catch up, she nodded only once to her friend before stepping through the entrance.

The place looked...gaudy. Lots of lavish, stereotypical oriental colors that she was certain would be considered tacky no matter the country it was in. The woman at the front desk, while initially smiling, quickly adopted a sour expression upon seeing Arcana.

"No women! You not read the sign?"

Lady Arcana blinked at this, slowly looking to Grim.

Another soft, low hum was Grim's only answer to Lady Arcana shooting down her suggestion. She could've guessed the other woman was too noble for it, but she'd not regret asking. Nevertheless she dropped the topic, only nodding at Arcana's thanks and even though the mask covered it returning the small smile.

Not being able to read the Mandarin Grim still scanned along the street, looking at the English names for the various shops. Arcana picked out their target first and Grim quickly focused on it, just giving a slight nod. Kicking the stand at her motorcycle's side Zoey left it there, her hookshot grabbing purchase on the roof before she grappled down, landing on the streets heavily. Though people backed away from her it wasn't nearly as dramatic as the men backing up from Lady Arcana, much to Grim's amusement. It'd likely be the opposite had this been Gotham.

As soon as they entered the massage parlor Grim's eyebrow twitched seeing the interior. It was a nightmare, and had she been in her civilian persona Zoey would've turned and walked right back out of any room that looked like this. She was pretty sure this fashion disaster was going to haunt her dreams.

"Hm?" Grim dragged her gaze to the woman that was raising her voice at Arcana, huffing lowly. Quickly the vigilante analyzed the situation. There was absolutely no way to pose as customers considering who they were, and if this woman kept yelling it might tip the harpies off - if she wasn't one herself that just took over. The place wasn't so big they'd really need any information from her either. Decision made Grim just hummed thoughtfully for a moment, and in a sudden flurry of motion leapt the desk and grabbed the woman's face in her left glove. The valves on the glove activated the instant she began moving, pumping the woman's face full of anesthesia.

Of course not to be inconsiderate Grim at least caught her with her other arm as the woman collapsed, lowering her to the floor behind the desk. With that done Grim very calmly moved to the front door and flipped the sign to 'closed' - no need for any amorous men to wander in on this.

"I'll see if I can gas anyone we come across first, get a quick drop on the harpies if I managed or at least keep them from being tipped off," Her voice was quieter in this setting, keeping to the stealthy approach. With a slight nod to Arcana, Grim focused on the path ahead, slipping forward on near silent feet to venture into the back.

Lady Arcana stared on in surprise when Grim gassed the woman at the front desk. Effective, and actually pretty funny. She clearly hadn't seen that coming, and hopefully neither would their targets. Following Grim's lead, she gently lifted off the floor and hovered alongside her, so that she wouldn't accidentally make a sound and blow their advantage.

As for the woman Grim had just knocked out, she wasn't one of the harpies. She did remember what each one looked like, thanks to her eidetic memory. Assuming they couldn't change their forms, that should allow them to find their targets.

And as they stepped through one of the curtains, Karen could definitively confirm that they had found something. Namely, a very oily man, and a confused, topless woman who promptly yelped at their presence.

"Eeep!" Arcana raised her hands to cover her eyes. "S-sorry!"

She...wasn't one of the ones at the warehouse.

Backing out of the room, Arcana quickly pointed down the hallway, to a sound that read "spa". "Maybe we could t-try that before bothering with all of the massage rooms?"

Yes, that sounded like a better idea. There would be more people there, after all, plus...the less private environment meant they were probably up to less explicit activities, right? Right! Right...

Nervously pushing towards the spa, Lady Arcana pushed open the large, ridiculously ornate wooden double doors which fit quite well with the try-hard style of the rest of the parlor. What she saw on the other side were about a dozen naked men who were waist deep in water, along with a similar amount of women, many of whom were massaging their shoulders or sitting beside them in the water.

Freezing in place at the sight, the only thing that stopped her from awkward backing out right away was the trio of Asian women who she instantly recognized. "H-hey, they're-"

Before she could even complete her sentence, one of the women screeched and lifted the man whose shoulders she had been rubbing clean out of the bath for the world to see, and threw him right at Arcana.

"NOOO I CAN SEE EVERYTHING!!"

Grim was very, very glad her mask covered her expressions currently. Despite being sympathetic to Lady Arcana's apparent sheltering and modesty it was rather funny seeing her reaction to walking in on a massage in progress. Grim had stepped into the first massage room fully prepared to attack just to get a myriad of startled noises from everyone involved. She gave the slightest of nods to the topless woman and man before stepping back and closing the door after Arcana, she evidently didn't think that woman was one of them.

Oh, and then Arcana picked the spa. Idly Grim thought of warning her, but Arcana probably had the right idea - the most amount of people would be in there. With that in mind Grim followed along, fingers on her left glove twitching lightly. Since it was a spa she wouldn't be able to use her right glove's defibrillator without being extremely careful, but she had other methods.

As soon as the door to the spa opened Grim swept her gaze along the people gathered, focusing on the women. Arcana stopped beside her, though hearing the start of a stuttering sentence Grim tilted her head toward her. Of course Arcana didn't even need to complete it before it became very obvious what she spotted.

Years of doing this for nearly every single night had Grim not even hesitating, even with Arcana's shrill yell in her ear and a very naked and wet man coming at them. Diving under the approaching man in a baseball slide Grim came up shooting, her left wrist snapping out. From the knuckles shot a dark brown liquid to the woman - harpy - that had first reacted, honed precision getting the mace right across her eyes. The screech was more of surprise and pain than any power, allowing Grim to sprint those last few feet. Skidding slightly on the wet floor Grim brought her arm up as she started just going passed the harpy, catching her around the throut with the bend of elbow. With the sudden jerk of momentum stopping in the clothesline Grim didn't fight it, instead leaping the last bit and in a display of athleticism kicking out both feet into the jaw of the woman behind the obvious harpy - from the way her skin had begun to crack like eggshells Grim had no problem breaking her jaw.

Well, if she was lucky anyway.

Of course taking her feet off the ground brought the first harpy down with Grim to the floor, the vigilante driving her elbow into her throat on the way in a move reminiscent of those fake wrestling matches. Her elbow, however, was very real and left the harpy choking for air. A swift reaction was all Grim had against these harpies after all. Rolling to her feet one of the silver blades was in her hand in an instant, ready to draw blood next.

Lady Arcana hadn't been prepared to have a naked man thrown at her. She had screamed, she had started to dodge...but then realized it would probably mean said gentleman being injured on impact. Biting her lip, she swiftly extended her arms to catch the tubby individual, winding up with him in a princess carry. Staring down at him with an uneasy smile, she desperately tried to ignore the shadow in her lower periphery. He had apparently been having a good time before they interrupted.

Setting the man down, she noted - thankful for the distraction - that Grim had already intercepted two of the harpies. She had never seen any normal human being move anywhere close to that fast, to the point where she had managed to get in several good shots before they were able to fully transform. Given their reaction, they apparently weren't as strong in their human forms.

Unfortunately, the third near the back had managed to complete her metamorphosis while Grim was occupied with combat, and she was occupied with an...old man...

Seeing the harpy's chest begin to expand, Arcana swiftly dashed forward and brought her fist up beneath her jaw, knocking the bird-woman clean through the ceiling while patron and prostitute alike all ran about the spa screaming in terror. Turning towards Grim, she noted that the harpy that had been kicked was now bleeding from her lip, but had continued her transformation.

The one on the ground had yet to catch her breath, however, and so she quickly moved on the fully transformed creature as it reared up for an attempted screech, slamming her head into the wooden wall with enough force to plant her torso clean through it. Drawing back her fist to deal an incapacitating blow, her eye was caught by another old man beside her who screamed in terror at the sudden turn of events.

"P-please don't hurt me!" He squealed, trembling.

"Oh God, stop shaking!" Arcana held her hands up.

Unfortunately, this had bought the harpy enough time to kick out with her legs, sending Lady Arcana flying into one of the pools which several men were still struggling to waddle out of. Ripping itself free from the wall it had been embedded in, the beast once again expanded its chest for a scream.

A low rumble akin to a growl hissed through Grim's mask seeing Arcana going flying. The other heroine had gotten distracted and it cost her, but that's what she was here for. Seeing as the harpy once again had her feet on the wet floor the defibrillator wasn't going to be of use either, which wasn't shocking considering the room.

Instead Grim threw her right hand out, the one that was already holding a silver blade. The metal flew forward and true, embedding itself in the cheek of the harpy. She would've gone for the throat, but traumatizing a bunch of men and women with that spray of blood wasn't on her agenda. When the harpy's head jerked from the sudden slicing pain Grim once more launched forward, and despite how bad of an idea getting close to a harpy's talons were she was confident. Grim all but jumped on the harpy, knocking her back into the hole Lady Arcana had made and getting her feet off the floor.

Practically straddling the bird woman Grim reached out with her right hand, only to be stopped by the absolutely bruising talon latching around her upper arm. Rather than fight to reach her chest like she had initially been going for Grim just changed the path of her hand and grabbed onto the feathered arm holding her by twisting her wrist, sending a few thousand volts of electricity through her. The grip tightened on her arm briefly, drawing a slight hiss from Grim before it loosened as the tazing did its job. Slipping off the harpy to put her own feet back on the floor Grim then turned to survey the damage, and the first harpy who no doubt had caught her breath by now.

Briefly Grim noted the harpy had ripped her jacket. How rude.

The first harpy had indeed managed to complete her transformation by now. Furthermore, she had noted the plight of her sister, the beast's chest expanding as she unleashed a shrill scream containing enough concussive force to shatter a human skeleton in mere seconds. It would thankfully not last for more than one, as Arcana burst from the water to deliver a right hook to the creature, knocking her clean through the back wall and out onto the street.

Glancing to Grim while scratching at the back of her head, Lady Arcana bowed her head in apology. "Sorry for letting my guard down back there. I was just...a little overwhelmed by all the..nakedness."

Stepping past her ally to stare out the hole she had just made, she could see the harpy laying prone atop an assuredly totalled yellow sports car People outside were screaming in terror at the monstrous sight - unconscious or not - and fleeing in a panic from it. Exhaling slightly, Lady Arcana floated towards the prone beast-woman, reaching down to lift her from the vehicle. That's when a horrible piercing scream washed over Chinatown.

Glancing up, Lady Arcana saw a harpy flying high above the community, her head cocked back as she unleashed her voice upon the sky. Arcana could see the blood pouring from her lips and the large bruise beneath her chin, indicating it was the one she had uppercutted earlier.

Dropping the harpy in her hand back onto the car, Lady Arcana quickly shot into the sky, grasping the creature by its throat and slamming down through the roof of the brothel and, ultimately, the pool beneath it. Watching the shitty imitation marble crack beneath the force of the impact, Karen lifted the creature up so it wouldn't drown.

"Why was it just screeching into the sky? Was it sending a signal?"

Grim stumbled, a hand reaching up to rub against her ear tentatively. Even with the ear plugs that mere second of screeching wound its way around the ear plugs, driving like a drill into her brain. Luckily it didn't deafen her thanks to the them. Grateful to Arcana for her interception Grim just gave a slight nod to her friend. While the Lady followed after the first harpy Zoey took a moment to check the one she had shocked wasn't going to get up before following after her.

At least, she had started to follow after Lady Arcana on hearing the screeching, just for a loud crashing to have Grim whirl around. It took only a moment for Lady Arcana to float back up, soaking wet with an equally dripping harpy. Looks like this place wasn't opening back up anytime soon.

"Screeching into the sky?" Grim stepped toward Arcana, taking a moment to lean over the edge of the pool and glance upward. Right through the ceiling, not surprising but impressive. Finally though the vigilante turned to the computer screen on her wrist, tapping to check the dots. "Might've been warning the others. We should move quickly - did you have a plan for what to do with them? I doubt the police are competent enough to deal with a mythological creature."

Lady Arcana paused. looking to Grim with an expression of pure bewilderment. She hadn't even considered that question until her fellow heroine had brought it up. How were they going to cage a punch of super strong harpies? There's no prison in the world that was equipped to handle them as far as she knew. And there were ten of them overall, at that, so they would need to make sure these didn't get up while they were dealing with the others.

"Sam!" Karen exclaimed, the black Bombay cat flashing through her head. "She might know what to do with them! Keep an eye on these guys, I'll go get her."

Glancing up at the whole in the brothel's ceiling, Lady Arcana wasted no time through it and back towards The Wedge. Landing in the alleyway behind her home, she tapped on the window of her bedroom. It took a few moments, but sure enough Samantha wandered in, seemingly confused at the origin of the tapping. The fear of her father coming instead briefly crossed her mind, but...there's no way he'd be up this early on a Saturday.

"Karen?!" Samantha gasped, seeing her owner/ward floating outside. "What are you doing?"

Suppressing an amused snicker at the cat's bewilderment, she gestured to the side. "Just unlock the window, I need to talk to you."

Sam visibly exhaled in her weird feline way, before using her paw to undo the latch. Karen quickly opened the window and pulled the cat into her arms, flying high into the sky with her again even as she squirmed in futility against the iron grasp of Lady Arcana. "Stop squirming! I need your help with something."

"Eh? What have done this time?!" Sam groaned, though she at least stopped fidgeting.

Lady Arcana pouted slightly at her tone. "I didn't do anything! T-there were these harpies, alright?"

She then descended into the brothel once again, happy to see that the creatures hadn't awoken in that time. Letting Sam down, the cat flinched at the wet floor beneath her paws, and irritated growl rumbling from her throat. She then paused, glancing about the place. "Wait...K-err, Lady Arcana, is this a whore house?"

Karen's cheeks flushed red at this, but she quickly shook her head. "That's not the point, Sam! I don't know what to do with these harpies, and there's probably even more we have to worry about!"

"Yeah, those are harpies alright," Sam muttered, glancing to the bird woman laying prone halfway through the wall. Her eyes then briefly settled on Grim, her nose wiggling slightly at the dog motif. "So you need a means of detaining them, right? Well, luckily you have one: The Rock of Eternity."

Lady Arcana's face lit up at the feline's words. "Oh! That place, the one where Shazam gave me these powers, right?"

"Exactly! Part of it's function is to hold dangerous beasts like this when necessary. Though in olden times they'd have probably just slain minor creatures like these," Samantha explained, seemingly noticing Karen's look of horror at the notion. "But I understand your feelings, so it should serve this purpose well."

Karen's tense posture relaxed a bit, relief washing over her at having a solution.

Left in the middle of a brothel with two new holes torn into the building, and three unconscious harpies, Grim could only stare after where Lady Arcana had disappeared into the sky. Alright, so she didn't have a plan, but at least she knew someone that could help. Apparently. Feeling a bit uneasy with the harpy just outside for the world to see Grim stepped outside to retrieve the one unconscious on the car through the hole in the wall, hoisting her onto her shoulder to bring in with the other two. After gassing her, just to be sure. By the time Grim set the harpy down on the wet floor Arcana had returned and she turned her attention to her, just to pause.

Was that a cat?

... Did the cat just talk?

Yep. Yep that was a talking cat that Lady Arcana had brought back. Grim's eyebrow twitched under her mask at the realization, the tick she had developed kicking in. Magic was absolute insanity. She was woken up by a literal Goddess of Magic, chased harpies across the town with her magic tracker, fought them in a brothel with said Goddess of Magic, and now a talking cat was telling them what they should do with them. Maybe she was actually having an alcohol-fueled dream.

Nah, her ears were still ringing from that harpy. Taking a deep breath and exhaling Grim tried really, really hard to shake off the strangeness of the day to instead focus on the two before her. At least they were divulging interesting tidbits of information. Rock of Eternity, someone named Shazam gave Lady Arcana her powers. Interesting. At least it solved the problem they had here and now.

"How do we get there?" The vigilante finally rumbled, and despite having just dropped the harpy once more went to grab onto her, grunting as she lifted the bird woman over her shoulders to carry her. With how her day was going it was probably more magic bullshit. After a moment her gaze behind the goggles flicked to Sam once again. Grim hesitated just a moment before bowing her head slightly, well-bred manners coming true, even to the... talking cat.

"Grim. The pleasure is mine."

Samantha eyed the man dressed as a dog for a moment before returning the nod. "Samantha, or Shurpanakha, if you prefer."

"Shurpa...?" Karen tilted her head to the side in confusion at this, but decided it wasn't worth asking about at the moment. Not when they had three angry birds to lock away. Moving to sling the two remaining harpies over her shoulders, she looked to her feline companion for their next move. "Okay, Sam. How do I get back there?"

Samantha raised her paw to gesture towards the thunderbolt on Lady Arcana's chest, "The Rock of Eternity has always been within you, quite literally. That thunderbolt on your chest is a direct conduit to the source of all magic, all you need to do is focus on your desire to return there and it will be so. No spell required, not for you."

Frowning slightly, Karen stared down at the forever oscillating lights within what was apparently an inter-dimensional power source contained inside of her. She then watched Samantha leap onto one of the harpies slung across her shoulder, whispering in her ear to concentrate. Right, focus. Focus on that day when the Wizard pulled her there. On that throne room where he sat...right, the throne...the throne...

"Well done," Samantha congratulated her, her weight disappearing from her shoulder, prompting to Karen to open her eyes to see that she was standing before the very same throne she had pictured before. Like, she was even the exact same distance from it that she had been back then! Maybe perfect photographic recall allowed her to appear exactly where she was before?

She was still carrying the two harpies, and Samantha now sat in the throne room beside her. Dropping them to the marble-like ground, Karen gasped in amazement, a broad grin stretched across her face. "Sauce!"

"I'm really back here! It's...just as I remember it, except...brighter?" She noted, observing how the once dim lines that crisscrossed the otherwise smooth black surface now hummed with power - magic power, she could immediately tell.

Samantha nodded at this. "The Rock has been restored to full power after so many centuries of decline. Arcane energy flows freely through it and into the mortal plane once again."

Lady Arcana cautiously stepped towards the throne, the power that coursed through the Rock seemingly tracing it's origins to the great, shimmering thunderbolt at the center of the obsidian chair. "C-can I sit in it?"

"Of course, it's your throne," Sam reminded her.

Placing a hand on the arm of the throne, Lady Arcana slowly eased herself down into it. "Nnah...!"

A feeling of overwhelming power rushed through her entire body in that moment, not dissimilar to how it felt whenever she transformed. It felt...good, but so very strange. Like the life of the world, no, maybe even the universe, was flowing through her. She felt connected. Connected to everything ever touched by magic. In that moment it literally felt like she could do anything!

"You can feel it, yes?" Samantha chuckled. "Your connection to the world of the arcane. From your throne you can perceive events virtually anywhere in the cosmos, at any time within the cosmos. Just speak these words: 'Historama'!"

Lady Arcana nodded once at Sam's instructions. "Alright...Historama!"

It was like the air before her had been torn open in that moment. Images flashed before it, things she didn't really understand. Unfamilair faces, locations, events...it was all a jumbled mess. "What am I...seeing?"

"Everything," Samantha replied. "You need to learn how to focus on only one image at a time, learn how to control the Historama. For now, simply focus your mind inwards, to the Rock itself."

Arcana did as she was told, filling her mind only with thoughts of the Rock of Eternity itself. Of the room before her, of her first arrival here, of meeting the Wizard. As if in response to this, the images of the Historama shifted, showing both the interior and exterior of the Rock...and an image of her standing before the previous wizard, Shazam. "Wait, I can see the past, too?"

"The Rock exists on a separate plane of time, so yes. Though in the case of that image, it is just that: a recording of past events, for it took place within the Rock of Eternity itself," the knowledgeable feline explained. "But in any case, let us attend to the matter at hand."

Bounding up to the throne, Samantha gestured to one of the images with her paw. "That area of the Rock is intended for holding creatures too dangerous to remain on the mortal plane. Harpies are a bit beneath it, but...it should be fine for now."

As Karen focused on it, the image grew in size, eventually eclipsing the others entirely. "Alright, how do I get there?"

"You don't need to, not right now. Just focus on one of the 'cells', and imagine the harpies inside," Samantha explained.

Karen obeyed her mentor, quickly imagining the winged creatures inside the one of the cells. Almost instantly, both harpies were struck by lightning almost identical to that through which she transformed, vanishing from where she had dropped them. When she glanced at the Historama again, they were suspended in midair within their new prison, sealing runes - as their inscriptions indicated - glowing on all sides as arcs of magical energy surged into them from the walls, seemingly keeping them locked in place.

"Holy Sauceballs..." Lady Arcana muttered. "This Wizard shit is effin' lit!"

She then remembered the remaining harpy outside, the Historama instantly displaying an image of the ruined Brothel, Grim and the remaining creature. "Hey, what about that one? I still need to go out and get it. How do I get back?"

"Unnecessary," Sam replied. "Since that harpy is also unconscious, there will be no contest of will. You should be able to do the same to it, even though it's in the mortal plane."

Pursing her lips slightly at this, Karen nodded. Imagining the third harpy in the same "cell" with her sisters, she watched as yet another thunderbolt descended down upon it. Sure enough, the prison was now occupied by all three siblings. "Shit...can I do that to anyone?"

"Probably not at this point, no. With those who have lost consciousness, it's easy. With those who might offer resistance to your will, however, it is far more difficult," the Black Bombay stated. "In time, you'll gain experience and become more adept at it. When that day comes, only the strongest of wills would be able to deny you."

She...didn't really know how to respond to that. On the one hand, the prospect of one day being able to zap bad guys directly into magical prison was pretty damn awesome. On the other hand, it kind of scared her. Should anybody, especially her, have that kind of power? It really did feel eerily like she was playing God at this point.

"Ah, shit," Lady Arcana smacked the side of her head. "What about the other harpies?"

Sam hummed in thought, as the Historama responded to Karen's desire, showing...what looked to be a literal tear somewhere in the sky near Hub City. "Seems like they've retreated back to their own plane in fear. That tear must have been how they crossed over in the first place. You should mend it."

"Eh? How?"

"Well, you know how the sky's supposed to look, right? It's not supposed to have a tear in it. So, imagine it without that tear."

Was it really that simple? "Imagine it like it normally is...so horribly polluted and shit, got it."

~

"Grim!" Lady Arcana called out to her friend, a thunderbolt heralding her reappearance in the mortal plane. "I did it! I locked away the harpies. And the others apparently went home."

Setting Sam down beside her, she smiled to the other heroine. "Don't worry, I locked the door behind them."

To say that Grim was having a day would be a bit of an understatement. Here she was, patiently waiting to go to some eternal rock while the talking cat told the magic Goddess how to get there, when said magic Goddess disappeared in a bolt of thunder. Yep, that was a thing that happened.

Left standing there like the third wheel at a keg party Grim could only stare at the spot where Lady Arcana had disappeared, not even a sign that she was there left. The vigilante cautiously circled the area before ending up in her original position, fumbling to take out her phone to call Karen just for another bolt of thunder to come down from nowhere. Except this one was right on her back - or more accurately, the harpy over her shoulders. Suddenly lacking the weight that was there Grim twisted her head to look at her shoulders, one hand still held up as though to hold the harpy there before raising her goggles to the ceiling. She wasn't even near the hole that Lady Arcana had made! How did thunder even strike?! Magic of course. It was always magic.

Grim raised that same hand to rub at her temple just above her goggles, feeling the muscles there moving beneath her fingertips as her eyebrow continued to twitch. Well, despite how bizarre the morning was at least the problem of where to store them was being taken care of, if she was correct - yep, there we go, another thunderbolt along with the reappearance of Lady Arcana. She seemed happy at least.

"Oh," At the moment Grim was grateful for the voice modulator that hid the disappointment coloring the one simple word. Despite the tick that developed due to these magical shenanigans it would've been interesting to see the apparent 'source of all magic' that Sam the talking cat had mentioned. In an instant however she clamped down on the feeling in a mental vice grip, instead nodding to the other heroine. "Good job, Lady Arcana. Hub City is safe again thanks to you." Her attention diverted to the cat at the woman's side, humming thoughtfully.

"And your help was vital as well, Samantha," Grim commented politely, before gesturing to the hole in the wall. "Shall we go then? I think we've made a lasting impression on the people of Chinatown. Plus I'd rather not be around when the owner wakes up from her nap to see what we did."

Lady Arcana glanced around at all the devastation their little battle had wrought against the carnal establishment, a hand rising to scratch at the back of her hood. "Well, at least we managed to get a happy ending! Eh? Eeeeh?"

Her shoulders sagged at the lack of response. "...I'll just take you back to your jet now."
