Morning came all too early for many of the students at the Arcane Orphanage. 5 am was early, but reasonable considering their extensive preparations. They all knew the drill; many had been following the same regiment since they were old enough to leave the nursery. They had an hour to get up, dress, and stretch. Breakfast was at six, followed by bathing, training, a break, classes, lunch, more classes, another break, cleaning the orphanage, some free time, dinner, more bathing, and some personal time before bed at 10.

The boys' dormitory was situated on the Western side of the compound, for the orphanage was best as a series of buildings connected by rooms. They had classrooms, a mess hall, a gymnasium, a meeting hall, a library, and private rooms for the staff. The orphans themselves lived in dorms, with bunks on top of each other up to three beds high. Everything was shared in common for them, as a way of saving money and a way of building a sort of camaraderie.

Among the many races there were humans, elves, halflings, dwarves, goblins, kobolds, orcs, dracons, lizardfolk, and many others. Some were represented by many individuals, others were the sole member of their species at the orphanage. Humans were the most common, followed by goblins and halflings. Having so many races made adapting common standards difficult. It was decided that in order to simplify accommodations, the styles of living and dressing which suited the largest number of individuals would be adopted. This meant that while the light goblin, lizardfolk, dracon, and kobold loincloths were avoided, it also meant that footwear was not usually an option either. This was good, as the common opinion of most of the species was that going barefoot was good for the foot muscles. The clothing for the boys consisted of a sleeveless shirt and a pair of shorts. As the orphanage was in a rather warm climate, this suited most of them quite fine. Sandals were available for outside use if absolutely necessary, but their use was discouraged, and no footwear was allowed indoors in any event.

Aurelian woke up as soon as he heard the familiar sound of the other males stirring. They were summoned by the loud bell rang outside by the groundskeeper, and they quickly woke. Failure to rise within five minutes of the bell was a punishable infraction, after all. The white-skinned boy climbed down from the top bunk, a spot he had claimed the night before. As they had no assigned beds, he had to make due with whatever he could reach in time, and the top bunks were generally preferred. He took a moment to get up. At age 13, he was starting to become a man, and he wondered how much longer he'd be compelled to follow this routine. Running a hand through his dirty-blonde hair, he did his best to straighten it out and make it look presentable, although no one really cared about his looks in this side of the compound.

Within a few moment, he climbed down from the bunk and found a free space of floor to stretch in, with just enough room between himself, a young dracon, and a young kobold to do it in. Some of the young grew quickly, and the kobold was almost grown despite being in the orphanage for barely a year. Most species present in the orphanage matured at about the 'standard' human rate, so the courses were about the same for most of them.

"Nnn... morning Arjun. Sleep well?"

The dracon turned to Aurelian. "Well enough. There was this stupid little halfling who kept babbling in his sleep about some jewelry he lost before he got here. I don't think he shut up until midnight."

"Ah, we can talk more about it later. Gotta get dressed!"

Like the others, Aurelian made his way down the hall to the carefully-folded piles of clothing, picking out a pair of shorts to wear over his boxers. It took him only a moment to tie the twine which held them in place. As usual, he skipped the shirt. For some reason, he didn't like that kind of clothing. Perhaps it was vanity on his part, trying to show off to the ladies. For someone so young, Aurelian had a surprisingly developed musculature, even though he was still a long way from maturity. Thirteen was hardly an adult, after all.

Guy
The boy woke to the sound of a bell, children and young men jumped out of bed, senior students were already halfway through being dressed and some were enough to help others. Guy stood quietly by his bed, making it so he didn't have to later, a few stretches and he was off. while others were still getting out of bed he was at the end of the room pulling on clothing, his usual sleeveless shirt, a lace up one so he could untie it when it gets hot, baggy shorts would be pulled on next with a rope belt holding it in place, sandals, tattered but still useful, his own pair which he had used throughout his time in the orphanage.

Laran
A large Elf entered the room, he stood cross armed and waiting for the children to get up and get dressed, he knew it would be a while until breakfast but giving the kids some encouragement would be good, "Hurry up! When you're dressed and stretched you will go into the mess hall immediately!", the seniors were the first to leave, naturally, then a few of the juniors, namely Guy Reece.

It laid awake. The feeling of shutting down and letting the world decide it's safety would have been terrifying. If only it had the normal concerns of mortality and safety. After being just 'born', it already had to kill it's creator's murderer. Gabriel, while a fresh slate, isn't as clean as the others.

When it arrived in the orphanage, it was told about the rules and regulations. There were a lot of them, and while it was an obscenely fast learner - it wouldn't be able to recall minute details, not yet. Somewhere outside the orphanage proper, its other self was wide awake, passively absorbing mana within the woods. Mana wasn't quite rich where it was, but Gabriel didn't need to expend mana. It was fine.

Without concern to how it looked, Gabriel stood up from his bed, made it like how his creator instructed it to do. It was one of its earliest memories, it won't ever forget it. It picked up the shorts that reached to only an inch above its knees and slid itself into a sleeveless top. Its arms got tangled on the way in, but managed to figure it out after a minute. The clothes looked off on it. The fit was either too short or too tight. Gabriel was somewhere in between the build and height of a young man, but with the definition of a boy. It was slim and held little to no muscles - however inhumanly strong it may be.

Dressed and alert, it walled the hallways with its bare foot. Another one of the rules, it noted. No footwear within the orphanage. It didn't mind. It's body was stronger than human children, stronger that its creator's child, that's what he said to Gabriel. It examined the halls and tried to find others. It didn't know there were creatures other than itself and humans, but it would be a great place to learn for it.

Gabriel closed its eyes and breathed deeply. Gabriel has a new home It heard an older voice and followed its source. He said to proceed to the mess hall.

It didn't know what a mess hall was, so it followed the others. It took notice that there were a lot smaller humans than it. It knew it was not human but to see little humans, so different yet so alike from its creator, it grew interested.

It hadn't managed to notice the non-human ones, nor the human-looking ones, but it would soon learn. Gabriel would learn. For now, it chose to follow the lot of them. It knew not to act on its own, it wasn't in it's element and all it can do was learn.

Kivana woke to the dull clanging of a small iron bell accompanied by the unintelligible shouting of one of the staff. Immediately Kivana rose, her feet touching the floor before the wake up caller was through, and was fully dressed before the lazier of the girls had finished rubbing their eyes. The uniform of the orphanage was much more revealing than the black cloak and funeral shroud Kivana slept in. Her neck, collarbone and limbs were exposed, accentuating her gaunt, skeleton-like figure. She took advantage of her appearance on most mornings by hanging her densely black hair over her face and scareing the other girls who had fallen back asleep by masquerading as an undead.

Grabbing her cloak, Kivana joined the other senior girls by the door in wait to be permitted to the mess hall. She began wrapping her hands in a thin white fabric whilst listening to the conversation of the other girls. Kivana usually sat alone or on the sidelines of various friend groups. Figuring that no one would approach her, she donned the black cloak -- hoping none of the staff would instruct her to take it off -- and walked among the lower classes who were beginning to congregate in circles, looking for a dead rat or spider to animate and play with in the short time she had left before food would be served.

She stalked around the bunks, lowering her head to look under beds, desks and night-stands. She overheared a whisper or two commenting on her behavior from some of the younger girls that were curious enough to gossip but not enough to approach an upperclassman.

The boys were mostly out of bed by now, and all were in some stage of their morning rituals, which could vary from orphan to orphan. Stretches, dressing in their day clothes, prayers to various gods and spirits for those so inclined to believe, and so on.

"Up, boys! Breakfast is coming soon! Don't delay!" The voice of a hall monitor broke through the lethargy which had lingered over the room. If they weren't moving before, they certainly were now.

Aurelian began the usual march out of the room to the mess hall. It would be time for food, then the roll call, followed by bathing. Only after that would the real rigors of the day begin. Every moment was precious, so he didn't hesitate. Feeling the smooth floor under his bare feet, the human was careful not to step on anyone else, especially if they had claws on their toes.

Arjun walked next to Guy, lining up with the other males to file out of the room. "So, uh... you know that they don't want using using footwear in the orphanage, right? Not indoors at least."

Guy

Guy was caught by surprise when a boy next to him spoke, something about not wearing footwear indoors, he quickly pulled them off realising the rules. The line moved and they were soon out of the dormitory, a few moments later they entered a large hall, the mess hall, other students had already taken their seats with food trays, Guy followed suit. The morning meal was a bowl of oats, a piece of fruit and a cup of milk, as it was on most days, nothing fancy, the idea is to keep food cheap but still sparing in energy, oats is enough for even the most athletic of people.

Gabriel followed where all of the other children went. A loud voice boomed and commanded them to take their breakfast. It didn't know if it needed sustenance but since it awoke, it hadn't needed any physical source of nourishment. It sustained itself through other means. Still, it didn't know whether what the others ate would have some any effect on it. It was curious, even if it didn't know what curiosity meant, even it was the strongest thing it felt at the moment.

It followed the others into a decent sized room full with others unlike it. It sat randomly, interested in the two that walked together while talking. They took their food and mirrored their actions and took a food bowl. Not meaning to voice out its concern, Gabriel spoke, "What is this?"

Aurelian sat near Gabriel. The question wasn't asked towards anyone in particular, but he decided to answer anyway.

"Uh, this is oatmeal. Or did you mean the fruit? These are pears. Pretty good ones today. I guess you must be new around here?"

Arjun ate his food, sitting not too far away from Guy. As a dracon, he was used to a diet with more meat. As the orphanage fed its students based on race and age, he had been given a small strip of sausage along with the rest, without any milk. It was a good thing too, as dracons rarely drank that after infancy.

"So, Guy? Any plans for today?" Arjun asked him.
