War is hell

Posting to see if their is any interest in a roleplay involving pilots and WW2. The 1940's was a golden age of aviation, as warplanes were created by various nations and sent against one another. I don't see many aviation role-plays on the site, and I think it could be incredibly cool to roleplay the roar of the engine and the explosion of the guns. War roleplays are fantastic for character development, and you can make some pretty epic fights too.

I am not sure what event to properly roleplay out however. WW2 had plenty of different events going for it, ranging from the Battle of Britain to the battle of Wake Island. It really depends on what type of aviation roleplay we want to do. I'd like some ideas from those of you that are in fact interested. Also, the eastern front had a huge amount of aviation and dogfighting, as the Russians struggled to stop the Germans from taking more and more land.

So, any interest in this or am I alone?

Okay I'm now actually creeped out. I literally had a dream about this last night: german night-fighter squadron hunting british bomber groups. Yes, I'm down.

EDIT: Oh look, its you again. :P I feel like you and I may end up seeing each other somewhat frequently on here cuz apparently we think alike.

Any preference to what type of event/battle we would be playing in?

I am finding that the Battle of Britain is probably the best battle for us to use for roleplay. It includes numerous types of aircraft, ranging from the Spitfire to even the Gladiator. Anyone have anything else they think could be fun or even better?

Also, not sure which nation we should choose either. I am leaning towards Britain, due to their aircraft and the storyline itself. The other issue I have is people tend to not enjoy roleplaying Nazi's.

Sounds interesting and promising, count me interested!

@WestWallAs for not playing Nazis, I personally can't say I have much issue with it playing Nazis as long as we don't glorify them. But I will be more than happy to be of the Good Ol' Allies. Perhaps a Polish fighter pilot unless this guy @kingkonrad steals that role :P

@WestWall@ONL

You are correct. I've just stolen a Polish fighter pilot. Have a Czech (or Norwegian, idk), kurwa.

I think the Battle of Britain is awesome, and has easily the greatest orchestral soundtrack to it coolest planes and the stakes involved are grand indeed. Depends whenabouts you set it- if it's really early, you'd look more at Hurricanes and Gladiators, but if you go later, it gets really interesting with the selection of Spitfire derivatives and nightfighters.

Alternatively, the Battle for Norway (shit, I'll make ONL blush), and the bombing campaigns there with Mosquitos is really interesting- 633 Squadron is a great showcase that the Mozzie is a friggin awesome plane, and the British had to adapt to naval strikes a lot more there.

Alternatively alternatively, the Mediterranean if anyone wanted to scratch a really weird spot is quite cool. The Battles for Malta and Libya/Tunisia are interesting fo sho, the camouflages used on British aircraft there look really wicked too. The use of P-40s, Hurricanes and Gladiators against superior Bf109s and Heinkels is really interesting, and few people realise that despite all the tank and other warfare, the P40 was such an effective fighter-bomber and it really did leave a dent as the first real sort of multirole FB in that theatre that could do both roles really well at low altitude.

@kingkonradDid you Norwegian? :D

I can vouch for all those ideas, if not pulling in a few more ideas into the fray; American/foreign fighter pilots fighting in China against the Japanese; Flying Tigers if I'm not wrong. Then again we have British and Commonwealth fighting over Burma or last defense of Singapore?

And just to be crazy, who says we can't have all? Why not have go from theatre to theatre as the war progresses?

I'm ok with any battles, though I have the tendency to go with weird types of aircrafts. Probably the Beaufighter if we are going for the Battle of Britain, or if we can alter history a little bit, the Westland Whirlwind, which was intended to enter the battle, but suffered technical difficulties.

Holy lord the interest. Fantastic. Looks like I was not alone when it came to the aviation roleplay.

@ONL@kingkonrad I will probably insist on us playing as the Allies. I do not want to cause any issues or problems for anyone that is uncomfortable playing as them. Furthermore, I do love the idea of changing up theatre's as the war goes on. Since we are pilots, we can be transferred as the war rages on.

Well, we could start with the Battle of Britain and then move on to the other battles. The campaign in Africa is one of my favorites, and I secretly love the Italian airforce (For my own reasons of course).

I don't know very much about the Chinese campaign to be honest.

I love the Mosquito too, but I am incredibly partial to the Spitfire.

@WestWallYay for the Allies! V for Victory!

As for the China-theatre, Amercicans voulenteered to travel to China and create a Chinese air force due to a lack of Chinese pilots. They went there first as adviors back in 1937, but eventually they too were putting up a fight against the Japanese. They were called the 'Flying Tigers', but were absorded into the regular armed forces by 1942. Just if you wanted to know.

There's something about it in general, it's a hell of an aircraft and whilst in the Battle of Britain more of the credit goes to the Hurricane, the way that it grew from a simple fighter into a really sophisticated aircraft towards the end of the war is remarkable- though I feel like the MkIA and MkIIb is the iconic pair, it's just something almost pornographic in Britishness. Something supremely cool about the naval patterns/Seafires though, blue and grey colours and the fact that they fitted 4x 20mms to the Vc is just nuts on an aircraft that can turn and burn.

Sounds good!
