I will be the first to admit I am rusty at RPing (Been about 3 years since I was active on this site last)

But the weird puzzles of rules and traps that GM's seem to be laying out for people applying to join their role play seems almost evil at this point.

I just got asked not to apply because I supposedly broke some rules that were hidden in the raw link text of the character sheet post. It also took me nearly 10 minutes just to find the part for the application post scene description.

Simply put is this the norm now? Cause I never did that stuffs when I was a GM.

RPGuild has this issue where people tend to not give a shit.

A lot of people set simple things in place; It might be requesting you to put your favorite color at the bottom of your CS, the request being stuffed inside of the rules of the RP to make sure you read them. People might have text within the character sheet explaining specifics that you should follow, and as much as I wish a perfect world existed where everyone is on the same page, it doesn't. And thus people just copy over the CS and start slapping their keyboards, deleting and not reading the things laid out for them.

Also I don't understand how something was hidden only in raw text format. If it existed, it ought to have been in the sheet itself. Maybe it's some forum magic since RPGuild is a clunky sack of shit for the most part, or it might just be because I'm not very smart, but I've never been stopped by these sorts of traps because Reading solves everything

There was an RP recently with a game in order to be allowed to join the roleplay. It involved some text hidden in the OOC which actually contained the character sheet. If I remember rightly it was colour hex was the same as the background. What the GM wanted was a mini challenge for the players, sort of something to both get them thinking and see what sort of problem solving skills they had.

Why?

Cause it was a murder mystery RP and the GM wanted players who were curious thinkers rather than action writers.

Was it a good move... Who knows, but old DOS games had hidden puzzles to unlock the game and he was perhaps inspired by some of these designs. Personally, I wouldn't issue a challenge like that these days, but on one of my RPs did many many years ago to see whether people actually read the rules.

Forgive me if I overextend, but was that the one where half the personality section was more or less lifted from a generic personality description?

In that case, I assume the GM simply takes plagiarized content seriously.

I've never experienced it outside of this forum either. But that goes without saying at this point, this forum has shown me a lot of very strange things involved in roleplaying. You really should read the entire sheet/OC before applying. But I fully understand when some people have rules that outright contradict others or have terrible structuring. It can be more difficult than necessary to parse information.

But what kills me, is when GM's or people in charge don't follow their own rules or give random exceptions to some and not others making the rules meaningless. But I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this before, so I'll leave it brief.

Some people literally put stuff like that in hiders, maybe even a hider within a hider. I can't imagine them being surprised when over half the people that try to join completely miss it. But if you accept all those people anyway, a lot of good that clever thing did?

On the topic of passwords in OOCs, I tend to find them kind of silly because A) they're usually really obvious and could be picked up just glancing at the rules or another character submission without reading the whole OOC, and B) it's usually pretty obvious when someone didn't read the OOC through.

If I had a shot for every submission I've read where the character in inappropiate for the kind of roleplay, absolutely nothing that would hint at why the character would participate in the group in the first place, having prohibited abilities/ equipment/ etc. that were outlined in the skeleton, or just be completely out of touch with the game's themes and direction, I would still be drunk and it's been well over a month since my last RP came out.

I saw that little trap ans it was very well hidden in the code. It seems I'm not the one one to notice that particular RP.

The clue was in one chunk, the answer inside the second rule in broken code casing that was invisible to thr main page and only could be located in the raw code itself.

Theres checking you read the rules and hider or sub rules but that one took me breaking code down chunk by chunk till I located answer if you used a phone.

That one seemed a tad extreme way I admit...

When I finally get back into GMing I'm gonna be more upfront about it, but I'll still have a mini "password" thing set in place. Maybe ask players questions about events that transpired before the RP starts, so they'd either have to go back and read over the OP for the answers, or they'll have already read the OP and can tell me the answers at that moment. Either way, they read the OP, so it's a win-win. It would really all depend on what information I put in the OP. I still think that having a password the same hex code as the background is a funny little idea, if not a little bullshitty. But placing the password in plain sight, and even bolding it, is dumb. But roleplay passwords in general are sort of dumb, since it gets a bit obvious that there's a password when everybody mentions their love for 50 Shades of Grey in their character sheets.

In the end, though, it's just a way of instantly filtering out people who just read certain parts of the OP, or don't read it at all.

Using text in an image tag is incredibly clever, not gonna lie. Doesn't show up and doesn't leave a huge gap like the hex code masking would. Hats off to whoever thought of that.

I understand that the job of the GM is to react to what the players do, and make an enjoyable experience. But what drives me nuts is either, when the GM shuts down after not following the plot, I just suggest a little prod to get back onto course. And the second is the GM with noplot at all, or secondary plots. RP to me is trying to copy real life, and in real life there is "subplots" and it always moves. I understand the struggle of having multiple plots, and the pain from not having the plots used, I have a google document with 8+ pages for about 16 plots. For 2 RPs. But the lack of solid plots and workarounds really sets me off.

Also, if I can seriously respond to something that isn't apart of my business, nor affects me in the slightest. As a GM, the whole point of an interest check/OOC is to make everything crystal clear. You can be elaborate and you can be simple. But you need to capture as many interested eyes as possible and get them to understand what will be occurring. Displaying any and all rules they must follow as coherently as possible.

If you're putting the OCC in code, making secrets...or directly/indirectly impeding the users ability to read it. All you're doing is stroking an ego and failing to understand what an OOC is suppose to be for...

You want to do weird experimental stuff? Like have people switch character sheets at random? Or maybe make your own fake language in a post that players need to decipher? You can, but you need to state it clearly and do it in the actual IC.

I think it's more a way of filtering out players who neglect to read the necessary information, as I said before. But that's just my opinion on the whole thing, so long as it doesn't get so crazy people are hiding stuff in img tags then I support it.
