@catchamber How does one live in international waters and remain self sufficient without transactions with other parties? Is like this imaginary person living in a boat? How is he getting the gasoline or fresh water? I don't understand what you're specifically getting at.

The likelihood of your average joe going in international waters to avoid to the government is miniscule at best...

The President and the First Lady of the United States of America take the time to answer phone calls destined for NORAD related to the location of Santa Claus on this Christmas Eve.

As an added note for those who might not understand, this highly American tradition is rumored to have started after an accidental misdial of a phone number many years ago had an eager child calling the United States Air Force about Santa Claus rather than the intended recipients. The enlisted and officers on station, who were getting the calls, kept in spirit and played along. As the story goes since then, tracking Santa Claus has been a tradition.

@SleepingSilence I don't believe in good and evil, but I do think some companies can perform certain malicious actions that ripple into the future in ways that cause more harm to more people than a government can.

You're kidding about the UN not being useful, right? The Security Council is most likely just one more thing that stands between the status quo and another world war. Also, how do you figure that trillions of dollars have been spent on the UN? As far as I know, the UN budget has only experienced major increases since the mid-1970s. Do I think they need to keep upping their budget? Probably not.

A world war is fine if it is in the name of your economic interest

God no. World wars are catastrophic wastes of precious resources.

I think he meant this in the sense that war can allow nations to accrue very powerful economic and military hegemony over certain areas, essentially leading to a net increase in the resources at their disposal.

They can remain self sufficient by exploiting the easily accessible natural resources, and applying them in ways that remove the need for them to purchase goods and services from other parties. Gasoline and fresh water will be available to anyone with the right technologies, especially if those systems are capable of being built using raw materials available in the area.

I'm also aware that international waters aren't law-free zones.

Yeah, but I did say "most folks obviously don't have the means or inclinations to live that way".

No, I was being sarcastic, hoping to stress that some countries don't give a shit about kill-counts so long as it furthers their prosperity. Which, I personally do not think is very nice.

No, I got that, but it seems like another world war would lead to a lot of mutually assured destruction. A drastic loss of population, manpower, trust, infrastructure, credibility, morale, and natural resources is bad for business and geopolitics. Not only that, the odds that your side will actually become the hegemon is far from guaranteed, because there are so many classified and unpredictable elements that can't reasonably be accounted for.

You are quite right there. Whenever we try to make geo-political assesments we got to remember we are mere civilians who know like a tenth of what the head honchos do.

The real problem with any form of anarchy is that even if you don't want a government, one is going to be forced on you. In a state of anarchy, people will band together into groups, and at some point one of those groups will have more capacity for force than another. It will begin subjugating other groups and set itself up as a government over those people, extracting resources from them in exchange for not killing them and protecting them from any other imperial groups that may wish to do the same. This is what happened in actual history as tribes which had some form of advantage over others set up empires and kingdoms through conquest. With no pre-existing government in place to protect you, nothing will prevent this from happening.

Also, competing force-wielders likewise existed in history, and still do today. They are known as kings, emperors and warlords.
