In 2032 the town of Areeda adopted a new way of thinking. It had previously been known as Detroit, but Dr. Michael Areeda came to town with ideas of how to make the perfect society. There wasn’t much to it, let him be the mayor and run the changes and within a year they would be seeing a increased society.

The town had agreed readily, wanting to turn around their city. Detroit had been deteriorating with an increase in crime and a decrease of jobs available in town. It seemed like businesses couldn’t stay open due to the crime and how often they would get robbed.

It started small. Dr. Areeda cut off the town to the outside world. The streets were blocked, fencing put up around the border, and phones were incapable of calling outside of the city. The citizens had figured that this was to keep them safe. It would give them an ability to reform their city from inside without having any other distractions.

Things increased from there. Robots were brought in to patrol the city and people were appointed to be be city patrols too. After that had been established there was a day, June 22, 2033, when the mayor put out an announcement that all citizens need to report to one of the big science buildings established in the city.

Arriving at the building was an odd experience, there just appeared to be a big waiting area and many rooms around the first couple of floors. Citizens were assigned a time to show up and were then lead in to the rooms for individual evaluations.


When led in to the evaluation room you had been measured, weighed, you waist size had been checked, and you had been asked the general questions all citizens were. If you were deemed to pass, you would be labeled a “Pretty”. This meant that you were considered beautiful. Pretties needed to have the looks, but were also expected to have the personality. You could be shy, but if you were hot-headed that would land you in another label.

You were expected to uphold a certain look. If you ever lost that appearance, you would disappear, never to be seen again. Pretties live in the main town of Areeda, living in apartments until you were expected to begin a family and would be assigned one of the houses or bigger apartments around town.

Pretties are expected to marry another Pretty or an Elite, to produce the best offspring. Children are limited to two per couple and would be labeled when they turned fifteen.


The evaluation room is the exact same that a Pretty or Elite would be led in to, but there was a much shorter process to decide if one was Ugly. They would be examined the same based on looks to begin with. Uglies would consist of those that were outside of the social norm for height and weight and body shape. It also included citizens who were disabled, scarred, mentally ill, low mental functioning, hot-headed, or whose skin tone was outside of accepted.

Uglies lived in certain buildings in a sector of town, Pretties and Elites not allowed in this area. They could be experimented on, work the manual labor jobs that robots were still incapable of performing to the best ability, or would be housemaids to the other two labels. Experiments were done to see if Uglies could be changed to Pretties, helping along the process of creating a perfect society.

Marriage for Uglies had to be between their label and they are only allowed one child per family. Their living conditions weren’t good enough to support more. They were only allowed the one to see if they could create a child who could be labeled as a Pretty or Elite.


Elites would be taken in to the evaluation room much the same. They were typically those who were on the edge of ugly and pretty. They had to have a redeeming quality. These qualities were usually how smart they were or how they could lead. Elites were expected to get careers such as scientists, city officials, or potentially law enforcement.

Elites live very much the same as Pretties, depending on rank they may have a better apartment then the others, but still lived in the heart of Areeda. The Prestigious, or Pretty, district as it was called. They were expected to marry a Pretty or Elite and were only allowed two children.

This rp will take place in 2036, about 3 years after the changes to Areeda. The citizens have been pretty well separated, there being a gate between the Pretties and the Uglies so they weren’t crossing paths unless going to work. They will be escorted to the household they are working in and usually all of their work is done after dark.

There have been experiments one on the Uglies in the last 3 years that have had disastrous results, including the humans losing their minds. You can talk with me about playing one of these.

We will be playing a rebellion group that includes all labels. There can even be Uglies who have had experiments done on them, but haven’t completely lost it. It will start with their first meeting. The group will be planning a rebellion to break down the separate of labels. They may be doing it because they have family or friends who were labeled as Ugly, which is the worst label in the city. Not only will the rebellion have to watch their backs for officials and their lapdogs, but they will also have to keep an eye out for experiments gone wrong.

Interesting, I may whip something up! This reminds me of the Uglies novels, blatantly, but a little earlier and with even more discrimination between groups it seems. There's no turning into a pretty...though there are experiments trying to do so.
