The sun shone brightly through the glass windows of Granny's Bakery. Ally stood by the register, making sure there was enough change in the register. She eyed over the dull coins, thinking about the usual rushes that came around dinnertime. In another hour there would be a fair line of hungry patrons, eager to get their own box of cupcakes or bag of cookies. Ally smiled and shook her head. Working at the bakery wasn't particularly hard. Sure she had to keep track of inventory, create schedules, deal with difficult customers, and everything in-between, but she really wouldn't change it for the world.

A rather peculiar sparkle shone on the ground. Her curious eyes traced the beam of sunlight to the thick glass windows. She stepped up to it and placed her hand where the glass distorted the light most. It was a new hole created by a bullet. "Damn," she muttered, examining the indention. It must have been created the night before. No doubt the bullet that created this mark was a stray. Ally shook her head once more and continued looking through the register. Not many people would consider this lucky, but she did. Thank goodness the bullet wasn't able to make it through the glass, and thank goodness no one was hit.

The bell chirped just as the register shut. Ally looked up to see a man walking in, his head up high. He wore a loose jacket and had his hood placed over his head, partially blocking his face. This was not initially troubling, as many citizens of Long Beach dressed like this, even on sunny days. She smiled and put gloves on. The man went to the front, now lowering his head.

"Welcome, how may I help you?" Ally asked, grabbing a pair of tongs.

"I ordered a cake," he mumbled.

"Alright, what's the name for the order?"

"Simon," he muttered.

Ally wracked her brain. She couldn't remember anyone named Simon ordering anything. "Give me a minute, I'll check in the back." With that, she made her way into the back where one worker baked and the other swept the floor. "Is there a cake for 'Simon'?" Her coworkers shook their heads.

Still determined to make sure there wasn't any mistake, Ally moved to the storage area to make sure there was no cake. As she did this, she heard a strange grunting sound from the front and the sound of metal on metal. She peeked out from the back and saw the man, "Simon", had hopped over the counter and was attempting to break open the register! Her heart stopped and her jaw opened slightly.

"Hey!" she shouted, unaware it was her who yelled. "Get out of here!"

Simon twisted around, holding a metal hammer in his hand. The register was slightly damaged, but had not yet opened. He took another swing. Ally looked back to her coworkers and shouted, "Call the police!"

The man turned around fully. "You think I'm afraid of the police?" he screamed. She looked up and for the first time was able to see his eyes. There was an absence, but what was missing she couldn't quite say. He threw the hammer down with all of his might, cracking some of the tile on the floor. This caused Ally to throw the tongs. The metal tool hit him in the face, causing him to flinch some, but it did not stop him. He reached for his belt and pulled out a pistol. Her eyes grew wide. Nothing seemed to process through her brain as soon as see saw the gun. It was purely reaction. She needed to protect herself and her coworkers.

Simon began to pull out the pistol and she began to stretch over to stop him. They were only a few feet apart. As he lifted the gun to face-level, she lifted her hand to meet it. Within fractions of a second, she was lucky enough to get hold of his wrist and continue his motion. He passed face-level and pulled the trigger when the pistol faced the ceiling.

Ally immediately knew she was at the disadvantage. Not only was she unarmed, but he was much stronger than her. After the bullet went off, time began to speed up to normal levels. His hand was in the air and he was forcing it down. With his free hand, he grabbed her neck and squeezed. She put her hand over his hand and released her grip on his gun-holding wrist. If she thought he was strong before, he was unthinkably strong when he had all of his pressure on her neck. She knew there wasn't much she could do as she tried to pry his fingers off of herself.

The world returned to slow motion as he lowered the gun and brought it towards her head. It felt like a cruel trick. Every moment of her life seemed to go by so quickly, and yet she could watch death slowly creep forward. She squeezed her eyes closed. Sorry Grandma. Please don't watch this on the footage.

A bang went off, and yet she was unharmed. The grip on her neck released and she gasped for air. Her eyes opened to see her coworker tackling Simon on the floor. She scratched and clawed at his face. He screamed, pulled the gun up, and shot into her side.

"Jessica!" Ally shouted and dove towards the man. He shoved the crying Jessica off of him and began to get up. He sat on his hands and knees, wiping some of his own blood out of his eyes. This was her chance! She got on her own knees and grabbed the man's wrist and pushed him over. From here, she performed a standard barbed wire, taking both of his arms under her chest and twisting clock-wise until his arms were locked between both of their chests. Knowing she couldn't hold this for long, she took her chance and began to pound her fist into his face. Because of the awkward positioning and her lack of experience punching while wrestling, her punches weren't as strong as they should have been, but they kept the man at bay.

It was a nasty feeling, the feeling of her knuckles pressing into the hard skull of the man. Sure, she loved to go at the punching bag when she visited Trip's gym, but she always had hand wraps and the bag was no where near the same texture. Even sparring wasn't like this. Her knuckles pounded against the man's skull until his struggling slowed and his screaming was quieted. She was afraid to stop punching, but stopped when she heard her coworker crying and gasping for air. Ally frightfully lifted herself off of the attempted burglar who was indeed unconscious.

She quickly made her way to her coworker who was bleeding profusely from her hip. "It hurts!" Jessica said through gritted teeth, tears streaming down her face.

"I know, I know," Ally said, voice shaking. She pulled off her apron and pressed it to her injured coworker's hip, hoping to slow the bleeding. She turned and yelled towards the back, "Where's the ambulance?"

"They're coming!" the worker from the back shouted.

~~~~~~~~~~~
"And they did come," Ally concluded, leaning back in the hard metal chair. Here she sat surrounded by her friends in the bright California sun. Finally each one of them had found a time where they could all meet up, relax, and talk. Naturally, Ally felt the need to recap her experience for her friends as they were main source of emotional support, other than her grandmother. "The cops came, arrested the guy, took us to the hospital, and here we are."
She put her hand over her neck. There were bruises from the attack that seemed forever ago, but only happened about a week ago. She took her hands off of her neck had noticed a bit of makeup on her fingertips. Despite her efforts, the bruises were pretty hard to conceal. "I just don't understand what makes people do what they do," she said, shaking her head, "This town is becoming worse and worse every single day."
Her eyes moved away from her fingertips and to her friends. What if it had been them in the situation? Would they have handled it differently? Would they have handled it better? Perhaps so. "Uh, well, anyway," she said, trying to brush off the conversation she brought up.
Michael would be listening to the story that Ally was telling, as interesting and horrifying as it was. After she was done speaking her story he formed a bit of a frown on his face for a second or two.
"Must have been crazy scary, huh? I can't imagine having to go through something like that. Man, this town is messed up."
He would scratch the back of his head as he continued talking, not really waiting for a response of any kind.
"My story isn't anything nearly as scary as that. I was just walking home one day and I get jumped by these street thug looking guys wearing hoods and bandanas. They didn't beat me too bad but they ended up taking my phone and my favourite jacket. Nothing too big but it just pisses me off that people are allowed to get away with stuff like that! I agree with you, Ally. This town needs a change."
He again looked angry for a second towards the end, clenching his fist in the process before allowing himself to calm down. He looked around at everyone else, scanning their faces to try and gauge people's feelings to the situations that had just been explained to them. He waited to see if anyone else was willing to share any stories themselves.
{ "Okay, so it all went down on a Friday night..." }
It was a cool, Friday night and Valentina Castro was headed for the bodega. In one hand she held her newly repaired cellphone to her ear, and in the other she held her wallet. The corner store was just a few blocks away from Tina's home, so she didn't bother driving or catching the bus. Instead, she walked briskly down the sidewalk, keeping an eye out for any suspicious behavior on the way. Having lived in North Long Beach her entire life, Valentina knew these streets like the back of her hand, which also meant that she knew just how dangerous they could be late at night. Nevertheless, she continued on, alone and slightly shivering from the gentle breeze. She only had one thing on her mind: food.
Just like every other Friday, Valentina had participated in another boxing match down at her father's gym earlier in the day; Just like every other match, she'd kicked some serious ass. As a reward, her Papa decided to let her have the rest of the day off; She spent the majority of her time laying around, eating junk food, and playing video games with her online buddies. In fact, the only reason she'd even left the comfort of her California king bed was because she'd run out of hot fries.
"I'm comin' up there now, just wait a few minutes," Tina spoke into her cellphone, "You know I usually get the 40 ounce and some honey Backwoods. I'll pay you back when I get there." On the other end of the line was none other than Charlie Benson, one of Tina's long term homeboys. The only reason she kept in touch with him, however, was because he was twenty-two years old and, therefore, old enough to purchase alcohol. Valentina didn't drink or smoke that often; In fact, working with her father in the gym made it nearly impossible to do without him finding out. However, whenever she did feel the need to ease the pain, Charlie was always the man to call.
She was just about to say something more to the older man when she suddenly felt a large hand wrap around her forearm. In a matter of seconds, Tina's cell phone was out of her hand and face down on the concrete, her wallet following soon after. The young woman was then pulled into a nearby alley, the attacker shoving her against the brick wall and wrapping his hand around her throat. "What's a pretty little bitch like you doing walking around these parts at this time of night, huh?" The man spoke in a raspy voice. Tina simply held the man's wrist with her free hand, trying desperately to escape from his tight grip. It was dark, especially now that she'd been pulled into an alley, but she still squinted her eyes to try and identify her attacker. The face she saw would be the same face she'd see in her nightmares for months to come.
"It was Marcus," Tina said to her small group of friends as she leaned back in her seat, "he went to school with us, but he was a grade lower than me. I used to hang with him when we were kids. His older brother was gang affiliated, but I never would have guessed that Marcus would follow in his footsteps. He's such a smart kid." As the young woman spoke, scenes from that night replayed themselves in her mind, causing her to shudder. Although growing up in a rough area and witnessing a few crimes herself, Tina had, up until then, been fortunate enough to not be an actual victim. Now she saw things in a completely different light, and she didn't like it in the slightest.
"I got away from him, thanks to my Papa's switchblade, but it was still a close call. That man could've killed me." After listening to the others tell their stories, Tina couldn't help but feel angry. She'd even clenched her teeth and balled up her fist when she heard about what happened to Ally the week before. It just seemed like so many people close to her were getting hurt thanks to these street thugs. "If only there was something we could do, you know?" Valentina muttered under her breath before folding her arms across her chest and preparing for another story.
Kaelan leaned against a lamp post. He looked upset about what have been shared. He began," This freaking sucks, I agree with you all." He looked as he remembered see his sister crying in the hospital bed, he felt so helpless.
He said," My sister one night, was walking home. She took a alleyway. As a short cut. She was stopped by two guys. One wanted her money and jewelry, the other just plain and simple sexually and physically assualt her. This had happened a two month's ago. She still can't get over that." He looked at the others still a bit upset. He just thought that things had changed for his family and for him, he had to do something about it. To protect anyone else from experiencing the same thing his sister went through.
Looking at everyone who told their story of a crimed ruled city nodded.
It had happened on a Saturday afternoon.
As usual, Aimee found herself at the beach shore due to her duties as a swim instructor. Aimee and the children did their stretches, life jackets and other equipment were put on; all and all it had seemed like any other day in crime-laden Long Beach. The sun beaming down on the warm san and the crashing waves would bring out the good folk of Long Beach, but even to Aimee's surprise, it would bring out the lowest of the low just as well.
"Help me!"
Aimee looked around for the source of the cry, and quickly found one of her students being carried off by one of the hoodlums of Long Beach. It had happened so fast that Aimee had been completely unaware that someone was lurking, yet Aimee knew she needed to do something to save the girl. Despite it likely being not wise to engage a criminal, Aimee couldn't just abandon her; such matters being against her morals and even her job duties.
And so, brazen and bold, Aimee set out to chase the individual. Placing the children under the watchful eye of one of the lifeguards, Aimee hopped on her bike, and pedaled off towards the kidnapping bandit. Weaving in and between crowds of beachgoers, Aimee found herself muttering apologies as she cut off several people in the process. To the balding man's nacho fries she spilled to the trio of joggers she almost ran into, Aimee would have to truly apologize to them later.
Thankfully, the kidnapper found Aimee persistent. and too much to deal with. With the child kicking and screaming, along with Aimee chasing after them, the crook let go of the girl, and climbed over a fence to escape, cursing himself for not having a gun with him. Watching the hoodlum run down an alley, Aimee soon turned her attention to the shaken up girl beside her. The girl was a mess, crying and having soiled herself, but above all, she was once again safe.
"Shh, now. It's alright. Big sister Aimee has you now." Aimee whispered to the girl, calming her down with an embrace.
Much like before, it had been another hot day under the warm California sunlight.
Aimee found herself at a table surrounded by her friends--a rarity nowadays. It had been difficult for them all to meet up together regularly, but finally they had a free chance to meet each other and hang out. They talked and conversed in metal chairs--thankfully not burning their skin due to an umbrella's shade--until Ally brought up a terrible experience that had happened to her recently. Aimee sat and listened in silence, finding herself astonished by the horrors of the city as she usually was.
Then, the others spoke--Michael, Valetina, and Kaelan. They were just as good friends as Ally was to Aimee, and they also had their own story to tell. Their experiences weren't as outrageous as getting shot at like Ally described, yet they were just as crazy.
What is this city coming too? Aimee found herself wondering, knowing just as well how bad Long Beach has it. Civilians found it hard to rise up, crooks did what they wanted, and the police had their hands full. If only someone was willing to fix the crime issue... if only.
Eventually, as Kaelan finished speaking, it was Aimee's turn to speak. And so, Aimee told her story, down to every detail she could remember.
"I couldn't just abandon her, you know?" Aimee spoke, sighing as she leaned back in her chair. "Maybe I was stupid for chasing him down. I could've been shot at, just like Ally and her coworker, but a kid's a kid. Their parents entrusted me with their children... I'm just as responsible for them as they are."
Closing her eyes momentarily, Aimee then adjusted herself in her seat, allowing for someone else to say their piece as she fixed her posture.
Trip sat silently as his friends shared their stories. They were all quite familiar by now with the story of how his father was murdered, he didn't need to bring it up here. Instead he decided to chime in with a more recent tale.
He took a sip of coffee and set the cup back on the table, waiting for the conversation to die down enough for him to start speaking.
"I was out for a jog along the boardwalk this morning. Saw a guy just blow this woman over and snatched her purse. I tried to catch up to him, but the bastard had too much of a head start. You guys are right, things are really going to hell in a hand basket. The gangs have the run of the whole city. Personally, I think the cops are on the take, but that's just me"
He finished off his coffee and tried to lob the empty cup into a nearby garbage can. It clattered off the rim and landed in the floor.
"This is why I don't play basketball" he said with a grin as he slipped out of his seat to finish disposing the cup.
Nick was still making his way to the meet up, he was bringing his dog with him as per usual. But with her recent injury Sindy wasn't as fast as she used to be (which wasn't all that fast.). Nick kept his pace slow so his little fluffy companion could keep up with him, the jingling of her collar announcing his arrival. Nick smiled as he walked through the other tables and chairs, "Sorry I'm late everyone. Sindy has gotten a little slower recently." Nick bent down and picked up his little dog holding her like a white fluffy baby, he did this often. All the friends would be able to instantly notice Sindy's front left paw would be missing, in it's place a bandaged stump. The dog didn't seem to mind, she sat there panting just like normal, tongue hanging out and tail wagging.
Nick took a seat and looked between all his friends, man had it been a long time since they were all in one place. He looked around and noticed the less than peachy mood, then slight look of concern made it's way onto his face. "So what have I missed? You guys are all looking pretty bummed out." Nick idly played with Sindy's front right paw, the dog didn't seem to mind at all being far to occupied with sniffing the air, and taking in all the smells she could.
Lemon sat and listened as each friend said what crap had happened to them within the past few weeks. Everything just seemed to make her get angrier. She just wished there was something she could do or someone who would help. At this point, she didn't trust the cops to do their job. By the time Nick showed up Lemon was willing to do anything. "We've just been talking about how this city is basically screwed."
She started remembering what had happened to Ollie and she had to fight to keep back the tears. Everyone here knew that he had been killed. None of them had known it was the dirty rat who had tried to sexually assault her a few years back. "Do all of you remember what happened to me during junior year of high school? Well, about a month back that guy broke out of prison. And horrifying story short he is the one who killed Ollie. And the police know it was him but they aren't DOING ANYTHING! I don't know about the rest of you but I'm fed up with everything about this crummy city."
Ally held her breath as she listened to each friend's testimonial. What was becoming of their worlds? What was becoming of their city? From murder, to assault, to rape, to hurt families, and even to attempted kidnapping, everyone was hurt in one way or another. Her heart sank as her friends were unable to receive the justice each deserved. Each one expressed their discontent with the city and its police force that seemed to do virtually nothing. How could they do anything to fix this? The police-excluding Aimee's brother- seemed to sit around in their cars all day, taking bribes to look the other way. Ally was sick of everyone being pushed around, but she wasn't sure what they could do to help each other.
"If the police won't do anything, we'll have to," Ally said, especially upset that the police wouldn't do anything to solve Ollie's case. She thought about her own brother who was still living with her father and her heart broke.
"Maybe we make some sort of neighborhood watch, or we..." she trailed off as she began to play with her necklace between her fingertips. The silver metal logo of Wonder Woman reflected the sun and created a similar sound to that of Sindy's collar and it moving along its chain. Ally let out a chuckle and joked, "Maybe we can form the Justice League or something."
{ "You're crazy, man." }
With her arms folded across her chest, Valentina listened intently as the rest of her friends told their stories. She'd been living in Long Beach her entire life; she knew all too well about the crime and violence that went down in this city, as well as the justice, or lack thereof, that followed. Hearing that all of these terrible things had happened to her friends practically made Tina's blood boil with anger.
When the sound of a faint jingle reached her ears, Valentina immediately raised her head and looked towards the door. As expected, Nick and his usual fluffy companion, Sindy, came walking through the door. Seeing the pooch instantly lifted the young woman's spirits; she had a soft spot for dogs, especially this one. She was slightly saddened to see the dog's recent injury. As Nick and Sindy walked by, Tina let her hand fall to her side and gently rub the pup on her back before she was scooped up into Nick's arms. "Yeah, what Lindsay said," Tina also answered the older boy, "We're reminiscing about all of those wonderful times when we've been fucked over by these street thugs, lousy police officers, and basically the entire legal system." As Tina spoke, she pulled her cell phone from her back pocket, eager to check for any new messages. She paused mid swipe, however, once Ally began to speak.
While Valentina knew that the crime rate in Long Beach was gradually riding, especially since their local law enforcement never seemed to take action when something went down, it had never once crossed her mind that she should be the one to put an end to it all. In fact, as soon as the last couple of sentences came out of Ally's mouth, Tina's feelings could clearly be seen all over her face. Sure, she was frustrated and all, but she wasn't about to put herself in a position that would definitely result in her ending up dead. No, she was not a superhero, and the little group of friends that sat around in the room was definitely not a Justice League.
"Yeah, you're crazy," Tina said with a chuckle, "I mean, I'm all of neighborhood watch. We can put up a bunch of posters and shit like you see in the rich neighborhoods. But form a Justice League? Girl..." Tina trailed off as she searched the faces of her friends who sat nearby. She wanted to see their reactions, as well as hear their opinions. Valentina figured that Ally was simply joking about the whole superhero thing, but decided to entertain the idea anyway. After another few seconds, Tina sighed, leaned back into her chair and said, "Whatever. As long as I don't have to be Superman. There's no way in hell I'm putting on tights."
Michael was standing against a wall listening to everyone's stories when Nick walked in carrying his dog, Sindy. He heard Lindsay bring up a story complaining about the current state of the police. She was right. People were fed up with what goes on in this city and Michael could see it on everybody's faces. Ally started mentioning something about forming a possible neighborhood watch and then joked about forming a Justice League.
"It doesn't matter if it's a Justice League or not, I still feel that we should at least do something. Oh, and I dibs Batman."
That last part was obviously a joke, not that anyone found it funny. He pulled out a chocolate bar from his jacket, unwrapped it, and took a bite out of it. He turned his attention back to the conversation as Tina finished talking about how absurd forming a Justice League is before seemingly changing her mind towards the end of the conversation, complaining about not wanting to wear tights. Michael still didn't get what Ally meant just yet.
Wait, so by Justice League do you meaning fighting crime or..."
He had an expression equal both confusion and worry as he went to speak again.
Because If you mean that we actually have to go out and fight the criminals, I'm not gonna be much help, I don't exactly know how to fight, remember?"
He began pondering of ways he could be useful when he remembered that he owned hockey gear that he could use, especially his hockey stick. Instead of fighting hand to hand or with holds, something he was poor at, he could use his hockey stick as a weapon of sorts to fend off the criminals. He took the bag from off his shoulders and placed it on the ground, taking out his hockey gear.
"I just remembered, I could use these."
He smiled awkwardly, rubbing the back of his head as he knew he just embarrassed himself. He went to back chewing on his chocolate bar once again.
Nick shook his head, this city was fucked. Murders left unsolved, violent robberies, and people shooting dogs. Nick's blood was boiling at the thought of all this, but he managed to hide his anger well, the only hint he gave was a sigh. Then Ally suggested something crazy, it was so crazy that any thoughts of anger were kicked out of Nick's mind. A team to fight crime? Nick rubbed his beard as he thought about the idea, he was going to agree with Tina, it was nuts they would get really hurt. But the more he thought about it the more he felt like it might not be that crazy.
If nobody was going to do anything about it, then maybe they needed to, maybe them taking a stand would inspire others? But the risk of injury was insane, but people were already hurting. hopefully fighting against crime would make it so that others didn't have to suffer. Perhaps... "I mean it does sound a little crazy. But if we could stop the kind of things that have happened to us from happening to others, shouldn't we at least try?" Nick sounded pretty unsure, his anger at the injustice of the city was conflicting with his urge to not get stabbed or shot at.
Nick put Sindy down and let her off her lead, Sindy then hobbled over to Tina because Tina was the last person to pet her. She'd roll onto her back before anyone even raised a hand to pet her. She seemed to be fine with missing a foot.
