Name: Josh Collins
Age: 28
Occupation: Educational Outreach Officer, Oceanographer and Administrative Support, he also helps out in any other roles ad hoc.
Brief Bio Born and raised in Birmingham, UK he couldn’t have been further from the coast, but yearly family holidays spent in Aberdyfi fostered his love for the ocean and led him to study Oceanography and Geography at Southampton University. Unsure about career paths he followed his oldest dream of becoming a teacher and completed his PGCE at Portsmouth University before gaining a Head of Department position at a local girls school.
Yet his thirst for adventure and the declining state of education led his heartbreaking search for careers out of education. An email offering his wide skill set led to his current position.
His educational background leads his highly administrative role assisting Charlie and Max with the day-to-day and longer-term running of the island, whilst his specific role is educational outreach. This includes running social media channels to showcase their work, creating resources to be used by educators and working with higher education institutions around the world to offer their highly competitive internship programme.
He's also been able to use his geographical background to ensure sustainability, use GIS to map the island and re-boot his Master's research into the effects of the local currents on sediment deposition and therefore coral starvation.
Anything Else: Josh still gets homesick and is glad his job involves outreach and frequent Skyping as he finds sharing a small island with such few people quite claustrophobic at times.
He loves scuba diving and losing himself in the quiet of being underwater.
He cannot help but have crushes on both Sam and Beau. I mean a man has needs and he’s not blind! But he’s too professional to make the first move.
