Sire,

It is the 24th of First Seed at the moment of writing this missive, which I hope is not delayed and finds you swiftly and in good fortune. A matter of such significant importance has come to my attention that I feel compelled to send this message to you instead of my direct superior. I believe it is imperative that you are personally made aware of the situation in Morgenstar, which is quickly deteriorating -- it is as if a madness of Sheogorath has taken root.

Simply put, a cult has come into existence that proclaims the "end of times" is approaching. Normally this would not be any cause for concern, but many of the chapels of the Imperial Cult in the region have somehow been seduced into spreading the message. I have found it somewhat difficult to ascertain the exact nature of the apocalypse they are prophesying, as it seems to be a secret they guard from the uninitiated and the skeptical, but the cult is swiftly gaining in popularity and influence among the poor and the downtrodden. They call themselves the Children of the Garden. What makes their message so subversive is that they promise protection and salvation and quite strongly emphasize that the Empire is not part of this path.

Several remote villages and woodlands, which were always only tenuously governed by Morgenstar's rulers, appear to be entirely under the cult's control now. I have received reports of crowds of them gathering on the fields and in the forests at night, listening to the gospel of their priests, and armed groups of cultists have been observed encroaching on more civilized territory. The fact that sedition is such a core element of the Children of the Garden's message has me worried. I fear that the Empire may soon have another Stormcloak Rebellion on its hands. The Duke is of no use; he refuses to take the threat seriously and continues to quarrel with Daggerfall over petty squabbles.

Perhaps the most peculiar thing about this whole affair is that the mastermind of the cult is rumored to be a Moth Priest, though I have not been able to confirm this myself. If this were true, it would help explain how the cult has expanded so quickly, for reasons I am sure you understand. I humbly suggest that you have the Penitus Oculatus inquire with the Order of the Ancestor Moth if one of their members has gone rogue. They can be secretive and a law unto themselves at times.

My recommendation is to have the Children of the Garden's leader, whoever he is, arrested at once on suspicion of conspiracy against the crown. If one were to remove the head of the serpent I am sure the body will wither and die.

Your faithful servant,
G. R. Nykerius

Hello and thank you for reading this far. Serpent's Fall is a roleplay I have been quietly concocting in my spare time for a while now, and more recently with the significant aid of @Culluket, who will be my co-GM for this RP. It's the culmination of several of my previous attempts at running an Elder Scrolls roleplay, having condensed all of my favorite elements into a single premise. And yes, before you ask, I was heavily inspired and driven by Far Cry 5 to finally make this roleplay.

We've got a lot more detail fleshed out already but I'll keep things brief and simple for this interest check. As you may have guessed, this is a roleplay about a zealous doomsday cult that threatens to wrestle power away from the Empire in the fictional Breton kingdom of Morgenstar, located somewhere in High Rock. Our characters are sent by direct order of the Emperor himself to put an end to this potential uprising before it can begin by arresting the leader and prophet of the Children of the Garden. Additionally, we are to investigate the exact nature of the apocalypse he has supposedly prophesied. In a world that has only recently had the actual end of times averted (by the Dragonborn defeating Alduin), it's better to be safe than sorry about such matters.

If any of the above sounds interesting to you or you have any questions, leave a comment and let me know. I hope to put a solid group together so I'm looking for a decent number of players. Don't be shy!

Cheers,
Hank.

Question- Can I get by without ever having played Elder Scrolls? Especially if I'm a big Dungeons & Dragons nerd.

Edit: Or Farcry 5? Just kidding, I know I don't need to have played Farcry 5, I just wanted to be silly.

I'd be interested to know about the sort of characters you expect. Agents of the Emperor, elite mercenaries, just something to start working a character idea from.

Also what year is this set in, and what are you considering to be canon from the events of Skyrim?

@Andrew Blade That's going to be really tough, and I'm leaning towards a "no". I'm not stopping you from applying when the RP goes live but it'll probably be noticeable in your character sheet alone that you're lacking in knowledge.

@Dead Cruiser Agents of the Emperor (so Penitus Oculatus) or their "assets", i.e. elite mercenaries. Both are fine.

We're talking a few years after Skyrim, two or three. The Stormcloak Rebellion was defeated but the Empire still has its hands full putting out fires in the East. Other events don't really matter, High Rock is too far away to have noticed anything.

Those dang moth priests with their "Oh no, you can't read an Elder Scroll by itself. You'll go blind and insaneeeee~~~!". Now who's going blind, insane and raising some stupid tree-hugging cult? Huh?

This one suggests going undercoverrr, getting to the priest, and pouring dry sand into his eyes till he talks!

The insect monks treasure their sight most, and khajit has ways to ...persuade ....those who treasure something.

Noted. I assume knowledge of the world and society and the history of the land would be essentialish.

It'd be worth a wiki-dive or 3. The world Skyrim(and the elder scrolls in general) is fairly easy to understand. Provided your sources are good.

The Emperor will remain a distant, faceless figure, so I'd rather not deal with the ramifications of either choice and just remain blissfully ignorant.

@Father Hank

Any preference to character archetypes?

I have the penchant to play a flamboyant foppish Breton Imperial Courtesean / Illusionist.
Over the top and grandiose, but a pretty damn good mage who messes with your mind.

Ooh. I both love Skyrim and Farcry 5. The juxtaposition of both brings a lot of thoughts and ideas to the table, especially religion-wise in Skyrim. I'm quite interested.

Count me as interested as well, I've been super interested in Far Cry 5 and, well, I love Skyrim so this seems like a super interesting idea for a RP.

Well hello, you.

Glad to see so much interest and enthusiasm already! Y'all can expect the RP thread from me sometime this weekend.

As for some of the proposed character types and the question regarding preferred archetypes: I don't have anything too specific in mind, but the most important thing to remember is that your characters need to have a good reason to be highly loyal to the Empire or one of its agents.
