I'd like to start an RP with a medieval setting, possibly with some low fantasy elements or possibly without. I'm a bit of a history geek so I want it to be fairly period accurate, but not to the point of killing any fun. It would be high-free/low-casual, as in I care more about the quality of a post more than the number of words in it; that's not to say posts must be short, but that they shouldn't be overly long and they should be well written no matter their length.

Interested? Chime in with any ideas, no matter what they are! Everyone has something to add to the setting and story. I've never been a GM before on this site, so any experienced folks are welcome to volunteer as Co-GM! I'll post ideas here as I think of them.

Sure.
Medieval Era? I'm a fan of those! More in England by the way.

Hi guys! Glad to hear you're interested!
SG, an English medieval setting definitely sounds interesting... are there certain characters you like to play or plot elements you like to see in those?
And MCC it's okay that you aren't an expert, this is in Free for a reason lol. I'm more than happy with quick Wikipedia and Google research to draw inspiration from.

I'm in class right now but I have a lot of things to post in a few hours! <3

Sorry I was gone for a few days! There was an unexpected family circumstance… won’t happen again. I hope y’all are still interested!

I was considering the kingdom of Mercia, around the year 800 or maybe slightly thereafter. At this point the entire Heptarchy was Christianized with some lingering paganism, which I think leaves a good place in the RP for supernatural elements. At this point the kingdom was in decline after a golden age in the mid 700s, about to be removed from supremacy by the kingdom of Wessex. Perhaps the overarching plot will be about espionage between the kingdoms, featuring the power struggles of lower lords sensing the end of an era? The characters can largely be common peasants, who wind up in such affairs and become heroes in their own right.

So far for names I've been using searches within this list, focusing on Anglo-Saxon names for major characters since we're looking at an English setting, so many established and authoritative figures will naturally be Anglo-Saxon.

I may be interested as well. Not as well versed in history as some but nothing I can't look up.

I think an RP taking place in history is very cool. What I’d really love is to be able to play a character who went back in time, or woke up in the body of someone in a different time period.

I don’t play video games. But I’ve heard of assassin creed, because they made a movie about it right? My inspiration is more manga and movies based. I always liked the idea of playing someone with future knowlage in a historical setting. Or someone from a different world placed in a new world where they have to adapt and learn.

For this particular RP I didn't have time travel in mind. If you guys would like we could get another RP interest check going that is about time travel in a similar setting, but I'd like this one in particular to lean toward fantasy and away from sci-fi. How does that sound?

@Lurking Krog@MissCapnCrunch

Like I said, Wikipedia searches are more than fine to draw inspiration from. This is just a free RP and it's all in fun, lol, I'd just like it to be rooted in real events.
Here are some of the articles I've been reading!
Middle Anglo-Saxon history (660–899)
(this is the most relevant section of a very big article, but the page also has good stuff about society and culture if you don't mind going down the wiki hole.)
Mercian Supremacy and Ecgfrith of Mercia
(short and sweet summaries. the last paragraph of the first article is the most important for us as it's about the end of Offa's reign. Ecgfrith died less than a year after his consecration and that was the beginning of the end for Mercia. this all would have happened just before our RP will begin.)
Coenwulf of Mercia
(the king during our RP. this is a long article but it has a lot of good info.)

Some of these are pretty long, so if you just skim them or pick passages that catch your interest, that's perfectly fine. :)

Also for creating future character names, here is a list of name elements appropriate to the setting! You can adjust and filter this list to your liking with the menu at the top.

This looks sweeeeet. Would love to hop in. I do have historical knowledge from that period of Mercia and the Wessex reign. Are we including the Germanic Viking invasion up in York in this?
