Quidditch World Cup Finals

The stadium built for the 422nd World Cup took a Ministry of Magic task force a year to construct and held roughly one-hundred thousand spectators.

In the final game, Ireland, having defeated Peru in the semi-finals, played against Bulgaria. In the end, Bulgarian Seeker managed to catch the Snitch and salvage Bulgarian dignity, although Ireland still managed to win the game, overall.

The events of the final match were overshadowed by the attack of Death Eaters on Muggles, leading to a riot afterwards. The Death Eaters fled after the Dark Mark was cast into the sky, but not before they had tortured and levitated several Muggles.

Tri-Wizard Tournament History

The Triwizard Tournament was established approximately seven-hundred years ago as a friendly competition between the wizarding schools the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, and the Durmstrang Institute. Held every five years, the competition would be hosted by each school in turn, the judges for the Tournament comprising the headmasters or headmistresses of the schools.

There have been at least 125 editions of the Tournament: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry has 63 wins, and Beauxbatons Academy of Magic has 62.

Due to the risks involved in overcoming the extremely dangerous tasks, and an increasing number of deaths, the Tournament was eventually discontinued at some point in or after the 1790s. Multiple attempts have been made to revive the Tournament, but none succeeded until this school year, where it is being held at Hogwarts Castle.

1792 Tri-Wizard Tournament

The Triwizard Tournament was held in 1792, and one of the tasks involved catching a cockatrice. However, the beast went on a rampage and injured three of the judges, the Heads of Hogwarts, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. The event was recorded in the book Hogwarts, A History, indicating that the 1792 Tournament was possibly held at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

A Revival of the Tournament

Barty Crouch Sr, Head of the Ministry of Magic's Department of International Magical Cooperation, in conjunction with Ludo Bagman, Head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports, worked with their opposite numbers in other countries to revive the Tournament. However, due to the dangerous nature of the Tournament, it was decided that some changes were to be made to the rules, with the main one being that no student under the age of seventeen being allowed to enter or compete.

Hogwarts '94 || News of the Tournament

On 1 September, Headmaster Albus Dumbledore announced to the school that they would be playing host to the Triwizard Tournament. As it were, Durmstrang and Beauxbatons have since dropped from the Tournament, it was now up to Hogwarts alone to continue the Tournament. Preparations were made for the arrival of the judges and any additional people who'd be joining in to watch the Tournament unfold, including an extra-thorough cleaning of the castle and it's grounds.

On 30 October, a feast to wish the future champions good fortune was held in the Great Hall, where Professor Dumbledore introduced the other Tournament judges — Bartemius Crouch Sr. and Ludo Bagman — to the assembled students. After explaining the rules of the Tournament, Dumbledore unveiled both the Goblet of Fire and the Triwizard Cup. Students would have until the start of the Hallowe'en Feast the following day to enter their names. In agreement with the new rules regarding underage students entering the Tournament, Dumbledore drew an Age Line around the Goblet of Fire.

The following day, 31 October, the school was abuzz with rumours and speculation over who would enter the Tournament. All of the Gryffindor delegation entered, as well as the Ravenclaws, Slytherins and so, presumably, did all the Hufflepuff students. Among the entrants were Angelina Johnson from Gryffindor, Cedric Diggory from Hufflepuff and Cassius Warrington from Slytherin. A couple of nameless students from Gryffindor attempted to bypass the Age Line by using an Ageing Potion but were repulsed by the Age Line and grew long white beards. S. Fawcett of Ravenclaw, and Summers of Hufflepuff suffered the same misfortune.

Naming of the Champions

All the students filed into the Great Hall for a dinner feast as the headmaster took his place directly in the center. For years he had been known to put on a grandiose speech, but here, his flair for the dramatic seemed to reach its zenith.

"Sit down. Please." Dumbledore's words were softly spoken but held a very stern tone. Everyone listened immediately, finding a seat in their designated rows as quickly as possible.

"Now the moment, we've all been waiting for. The Champion Selection!" The aged wizard walked up the aisle of students and made his way to the ancient, magical cup which sat atop his lecture podium. Fire simmered from its wooden rim and brightened as all the torches around the hall dimmed with wave of Dumbledore’s hand.

"There may be four Chosen, but in the end, only one will go down in history. Only one will hoist this chalice of champions. This vessel of victory. The Tri-Wizard Cup!" With no further hesitation, on the long table where the professors all sat, Barty Crouch released the shining blue cup from beneath the cloth it was concealed beneath.

He turned towards the Goblet, placing both hands on either side of it a moment before stepping away. The Goblet’s blue flames crackled into a dark red hue. The headmaster held a strong, but withered hand out as a jet of fire exploded from the goblet. A burnt piece of gold parchment drifted between his fingers, squinting at it as he read the name aloud.

"Our first tournament champion, from Hufflepuff.." Of course, hold for the dramatic pause. "Maddison Morley!" He waited for her to approach before shaking her hand.

The noise dimmed and, eventually, the last Hufflepuff cheer died down. The flames darkened once more, and the tension in the hall was palpable. Nonetheless, three more names must be drawn. The goblet shot forth another blackened piece of parchment. Green.

"Our Slytherin Champion, is Jacob Lee!" The Slytherins cast a huge uproar, practically deafening the Hufflepuff students who sat to the tables beside them. The Headmaster shook the boy's hand firmly before turning back to the cup.

It seemed as though the goblet knew, or it was one for dramatic pauses just like Dumbledore, but it seemed to wait till the applauses and shouting died down again before shooting out another parchment paper. Red.

"Gryffindor's Tournament Champion, is Kaitlyn Smith!" The surrounding Gryffindors were overcome with a great applause. Again, Dumbledore waited for the girl to approach, giving her a friendly smile and a tender shake of his hand before returning his attention to the cup.

The fourth and final piece shot out of the cup with great pizazz. There was only one House left to pick from. Ravenclaw. The blue parchment fell into Dumbledore's hand, looking over the name as he gazed out into the crowd for a few moments before calling out the named student. "Our fourth, and final champion, reigning from Ravenclaw... Noella Kingsley!"

After what was possibly the shortest night's sleep he'd ever had, Jake woke up, his head still buzzing with exitement from last night's Quidditch match. He flashed a quick smile at the picture he'd scored. The match had been nothing short of spectacular, and the moving picture of the exact moment the Snitch had been caught and the Match had ended had been given a prominent place on his wall.
They'd had excellent seats of course, and he had thouroughly enjoyed watching the skilled players from both sides. In all honestly, he ached to get back onto his broomstick and try out some of the moves he'd seen the seekers make. That Wronski Feint seemed like a skill worth picking up, even if his mother had made him promise he wouldn't!
They'd had excellent seats of course. Father had ordered tickets for the final even before the date had been set and Jake had spent most of his free time checking stats, swearing at disappointing teams and cheering for Ireland.

A short knock on the door distracted Jake from his reliving of last nights glorious events. Still smiling, he spoke softly. Come in was all he said. Softly, the door opened and a small creature with huge ears peered through the door. Good morning master Jacob the tiny creature spoke as she entered the room. She wasn't wearing any clothes. She had wrapped an immaculate beige tea towel that somehow matched her bright yellow eyes around her body, wearing it almost like a tiny dress. Mistress is wondering if you is ready for having breakfast sir, the house elf continued. She is saying you is late and she is wanting to go shopping for your school supplies sir. While she spoke, the house elf had crossed the room. She was now laying out a set of wizard robes his mother had no doubt ordered her to prepare for him. Jake smiled. Good morning, Tinsey Jake replied, as he got up out of bed. Thank you. Please tell my mother I am up and will join her for breakfast shortly. He liked the old house elf, but waited for Tinsey to close the bedroom door behind her before he took of the shirt he'd slept in and put on his robes. He didn't like changing in front of the elf, though he wasn't sure why.

A few moments later, Jake walked downstairs. He passed the massive dining room and headed over to his mothers parlour. He knocked and waited for her to reply before opening the door and entering. He knew she was expecting her, but simply barging into a room simply wasn't something you did in this house. Good morning, mother. Sorry I am late. Yesterday was quite exciting. Jake's tone was polite, and somehow devoid of feeling. Showing emotions wasn't proper behaviour for someone in his position. He'd learned that pretty early on, and had taken it to heart.
Jake kissed his mother and sat down to breakfast. Full English, today. Jake smiled and put some eggs, bacon, tomatoes, sausages and beans onto his plate. A small plate with buttered toast appeared to the right of his plate. He grabbed a slice and started eating. The breakfast reminded him of the meals he'd be getting at Hogwarts, and thoughts of school brought the smile back onto his face.

The rest of the day was a flurry of shopping. New books of course. And new robes. He hadn't grown much since last summer, but his mother would not let him wear the same robes another year. His mother paid for his robes, and left his old robes at the shop for someone less fortunate. They were rich, and showed it, but weren't snobbish about it. Yes, they had more than many others, but his father worked hard for his money. At least, that was what his mother always said. And though her mother didn't believe in charity, throwing away a perfectly good set of robes simply because your child wasn't wearing them anymore seemed brutally wasteful, even to his mother.
Why don't you go and get your potions ingredients and the rest of the list yourself? His mother suggested, as she turned her attention to some of the new fabrics that Madame Malkin was showing to her. I need to have some dresses made, and you might as well finish your shopping. She handed him the list without looking at him, already picturing patterns and how great she'd look. Jake shrugged, said: Yes mother. I'll meet you back here when I'm done, and left the shop.
He bought his potions ingredients, got some owl treats for Merlin, picked up a few more odds and ends, greeted some familiar faces and visited the sweet shop. Finally, he peered through the shop window. His mother had just settled up with the owner and was making her way towards the door. Jake held the door for her in a gentlemanly fashion and his mother looked at him approvingly. All done? She asked him. Jake nodded, and they headed home.

A few days later, Jake was getting on the train back to Hogwarts. His trunk was in the rack above his head, and Merlin's cage was on the seat next to him. The cage was covered, and Merlin was most likely either asleep or nodding off under it.
Jake'd travelled to London by himself. His mother wasn't feeling well, something that seemed to happen a lot around the first of September, and his father was held up at work. Tinsey the house elf had offered to accompany him, but Jake had refused. The idea of turning up with a servant seemed somehow beneath him. Besides, he was old enough to handle himself. His mother had protested, and finally his father had come up with a compromise. He had used Floo powder to travel to his father's office, and his father had apparated himself and Jake to the platform. As soon as they had arrived, his father had put his trunk on the train, patted him on the head and left.
Slowly, the train filled up, and the compartment filled with his friends and classmates. The trip to Hogwarts was pleasant if uneventful, and by the time they had arrived, Jake was tired and hungry and ready to go.

The first few days at school always required a little getting used to. No more servants around to do everything, no more freedom to do whatever you felt like. Though, in all honesty, Jake found plenty of time for that anyway as he settled back into life in the castle. The start of term announcements had created a lot of excitement, and the whole school was constantly buzzing with excitement. Who was going to be the champion of their house? What would the challenges be like? Why had the other schools dropped out suddenly? The Slytherin's kept up appearances, feigning looks of disenterest whenever members of other houses were present. To them, it was obvious that Slytherin should be the big winner. Pure blood, strong magic and all that. Of course, Jake was determined to put his name in the goblet, he had turned 17 before the summer and was sure that he was as well prepared, or better, than any other Slytherin in his year. He'd spent the entire summer preparing for this event. His father had told him about it the moment he'd come home at the start of the summer, and Jake had spent the entire summer with his tutor, practising spells and potions that might come in handy. Not even his closest friends knew this. Jake had already submitted his name, and was eager to compete, and to win, he just knew better than to discuss this with the others.

Lessons were harder than previous years, of course, and Jake was eager to show that he'd studied during the summer.
Snape's lessons had always been among his favourites, and, having the pre-disposition, Snape didn't seem to mind him as much as most of the other students. Jake had been experimenting over the summer, and was eager to perfect his Draught of the Living Dead. Jake felt that this potion may come in handy (during the tournament of course) and wanted to make as strong a Draught as possible. He had discovered that crushing the Sopophorus beans rather than cutting them up made them release a lot more fluids, and had experimented with the number of beans that should be used, but he had been having a hard time stirring the potion into the correct colour. Distracted by Snape's comments on another student's disastrous attempt, Jake inadvertently added a clockwise stir after his seven counter-clockwise motions. Realising what he'd done, Jake glanced at his potion and saw that it had taken on exactly the hue described in the textbook. He smiled to himself and added another note to his book, muttering under his breath as he wrote. 13 beans, crush don't cut, use silver dagger, add clockwise stir.
When Snape finally ended the class by telling everyone: If I thought it would improve your lacking talents by even the smallest bit, I'd advise you all to follow Mr. Lee's example. As it stands, however, I must content myself with the knowledge that at least one of you isn't completely useless. Jake used the distraction to fill a couple of vials with the Draught and hide them in his bag before Snape could evaporate the contents of his cauldron. Jake was sure Snape knew what he'd done, but since the teacher didn't speak of it, he assumed it was fine.

After class, Jake followed the rest of the Slytherins to the dormitories. He put away his books, and tucked the vials safely into his trunk. Afraid they would break or be discovered, he hid the three vials in a pair of socks he rarely wore. He washed his face and hands and checked his robes. Can't go to table dressed like this, he muttered to himself as he discovered the small stain. He quickly changed his robes and joined the other Slytherins as they made their way to the Great Hall for their evening meal. I wonder what's for dinner. Food here's always excellent. Jake tried to divert Warrington's comments on the Goblet. Of course, Warrington wasn't to be deferred. He spent most of his time bragging about how he'd be the best choice for Slytherin. Of course I've entered my name, one has to do ones bit for ones house, of course. Besides, we'll know who the champions are tomorrow, won't we? Jake sounded annoyed, but Warrington simply nodded and continued his tirade. Jake didn't manage to shake him off until he sat down between two other Slytherins and Warrington, suddenly aware there was no room for him, had to move on and find someone else to annoy. Jake sighed and looked around the table to see where he'd ended up. He was sitting near Malfoy, the little toerag, but fortunately the little brat was too busy impressing those two idiots that always followed him around like lovesick puppies to pay much attention to Jake. The headmaster welcomed everyone, food appeared and Jake dug in. It wasn't until he heard Malfoy's whisper, obviously meant to draw attention, that Jake looked up at the teachers' table and noticed the two newcomers. Judges, no doubt. He recognized both instantly, his father worked at the Ministry just like Malfoy's, but said nothing. Unlike Malfoy, Jake didn't need to convince others of his connections.

Maddison Morley

The Night of the Attack

The Irish blew in like a great wind, green and grey smoke trailing behind them as they entered into the arena on their new Firebolts. She could just barely hear someone call out the Chasers names over the loud roar of cheers from the hundred thousand some odd chants sounding off in the stadium, but she was only screaming one name.

"AIDAN! WHOO!" she yelled out, even though she knew he'd never hear her. It was still worth trying, right? She admired him and had a slight crush on the Irish team Seeker.

Throughout the night, Maddie's eyes were focused on Lynch, although she did however witness the Bulgarian seeker "Krummy" (as she liked to call him) get a bludger to the face by the Irish team Beater, Quigley. The action, later announced, broke the poor guy's nose. It wasn't much longer after that that Maddie notice Aidan had spotted the snitch, and off he went. Maddie screamed out his name a few more times as she watched the seeker dive for the thing, but ultimately he came just short as Krum snatched the snitch right out of the air, calling the game. Ireland still came out on top by 10 points. 170-160.

It was disappointing Lynch hadn't caught the snitch, but Maddie went ahead and celebrated with her boyfriend, Oliver Davies and their group of friends they'd come along with anyway. The Irish had won, and that was good enough for her. Maddie thought back on the match and how fast they were going on their new brooms. If only she had a Firebolt. Her Inline Bandit was great and all, but those Firebolts were the newest and fastest brooms out there. If only she had the chance to ride one. With Aidan Lynch. Pshh. That'd be the day.

The partying went on for a couple of hours undisturbed until suddenly yelling turned into screams. Campfires began to spread across the campsite, as well as explosions from every direction sounding off. And the screams. The terrible screams. They echoed in one's ears as if they'd never go away. Maddie nor her friends intended to stay any longer. Once they all made sure they were accounted for, each of them apparated away. One by one, Maddie and Oliver watched their friends flee to safety, and finally so did they. Once safely back in Maddie's bedroom, Oliver sat down on her bed as Maddie began to pace back and forth. This continued for some time before Oliver spoke up.

"There's no need for this, love. She'll come. She always does."

He was right, and Maddison knew this to be true, but what if? What if she didn't this time? It was practically irony at play when there was a loud clap! that sounded off downstairs. Maddie's eyes flashed wide open and immediately tore off down the stairs to find her mother in the kitchen tucking her shirt into the breast of her uniform. "Well hello, dear." Maddie stopped nearly dead in her tracks, mouth dropped open. "That's what I get? 'Hello, dear'. What kind of.." Oliver, without warning, came from behind her and clapped his hand over her mouth gently and gave a charming smile to Victoria. "What she means to say, is she's glad you made it back safely."

Victoria smiled back at Oliver and nodded, "Indeed. Well, I was just dropping by to be sure you had gotten her home in one piece." She raised an eyebrow to Maddison, "Would you mind going to stay with Oli, for the night? There's unfinished business I need to tend to, and I have to get back right away." By the look on Maddison's face, it was clear she was unhappy about it but wouldn't argue the matter. She hugged her mother firmly with a quick 'Be safe' before walking upstairs to her room to grab some things before she and Oliver traveled to his own home. With another loud clap!, Maddison and Oliver were left alone to finish up.

A Few Weeks Later

It had been days since Maddie had seen her mum. The Ministry had the aurors constantly tied up. There were little notes and things left around the house that proved her mum had been home, but she hadn't actually seen her. Maddie had done all of her shopping for school with Oliver and his parents, along with her owl, Igor, who wouldn't allow her to leave him at home alone.

In the weeks following her shopping spree, Maddie spent her time visiting Oliver as well as a few of her close friends as much as she could. It kept her mind off of her mom not being home as often as she was used to. It wasn't until the day the train would be leaving that Maddie literally ran into her mom in the kitchen. She was running late and thought she'd make things go a bit quicker by apparating downstairs, slamming straight into her mom who stood in front of the sink. Maddie's supplies and her mother's coffee spilling out of their hands.

All items froze mid-air and slowly fell back into place, Victoria giving her daughter a slight smirk. "You take after your father." Maddie gave a simple half-smile, collecting herself and tucking a few stray hairs behind her ear. "If only he was here." Victoria's smirk faded slowly, replaced with an apologetic look. A silence fell over them both, holding for a few moments before Victoria spoke again. "I thought I'd join you today, and see you off. Last year, first day. It'd be a shame to miss out."

Maddie sped around the kitchen, hand making a quick breakfast for herself. Just a piece ofbuttered toast, a slice of leftover ham and an apple, taking a few bites of ham before approaching her mom again. "I'm pretty sure I've got everything I need. I sent my suitcases to the station this morning with Tsarrin." Tsarrin (pronounced 'sarin') was the Morley Household house elf. A free elf, who they were gifted and set free, but given that his 'masters' had set him free he decided to stick around a while and help the family when needed.

It hadn't been long before Maddie finished her breakfast and they both apparated to the train station together, standing just outside the pilar that read 93/4. "Why?" Maddie glanced at her mom with a look, getting a smile in response. "Just.. walk with me, hmm?" Maddie rolled her eyes and sighed heavily, smirking a little as she hooked her arm into her mums and walked through to the other side.

The station was busy. Owls flying here and there, everyone was bussing around trying to get to their designated cars, kids prying themselves from their parents arms.. something Maddie felt she'd probably have to do here, in a moment. Victoria stopped and turned Maddison to face her, looking deep into her eyes. "I'm sorry I wasn't here for you in these last few weeks. I know you are old enough to understand why, so I won't bother getting into the boring details. Just.. please don't forget to write, okay? Tell me everything."

Maddie smiled up at her mum and nodded, wrapping her arms around her tightly in a hug. A few moments later, Maddie pulled away. "I gotta go. Till we see each other again." Slowly they both let go of each other and went their separate ways. Maddie pushed her way through the crowd of kids and parents alike, making her way to the car her and her friends had set to meet in. She slipped inside and was attempting to go one way when a hand clasped hers and pulled her back into the opposite direction. Maddison tried yanking her hand free as she turned but stopped as soon as she saw who it was. Oli.

"Oh, hello love." Maddie grinned sheepishly before Oliver leaned in quickly with a kiss to her lips. "My queen," Oliver smiled charmingly, causing Maddie to blush. "Could I convince you to come sit with me?" Although the thought was tempting, Maddie shook her head and smiled apologetically. "Not this time, lovey. Waiting on the girls. Besides, your kind don't like mine very much." Oliver raised an eyebrow and laughed, "Oh, my widdle badger not feeling up to fighting off some vipers, today?" Maddie laughed and shoved his shoulder, to which he chuckled at.

"You know they're just jealous. The girls cause they're not you, and the guys because they don't have you. They're all mad because I got the prettiest girl in Hogwarts to go out with me. Houses be damned!" Maddie rolled her eyes and smiled even wider. "Oh hush. All this sweet talk isn't going to get me to come sit with you. I'll see you when we get there, okay?" Maddie leaned up and kissed him one more time before parting, walking up the crowded train car hallway, not waiting for his rebuttle.

Once Maddie found their usual spot, she slipped inside and shut the door. She was the first one there. Looking up into the luggage compartment section, she could see a suitcase with a tag that read her name on it overhanging from the ledge. She'd write a letter for Tsarrin later and tell him, again, thank you. Part of her wanted to change into her robes, but instead she decided to open up the car windows and sit down beside one, looking out at all the commotion just outside. It was going to be one hell of a long ride. Well, it always was, but this was going to be the last one she'd make, besides the trip back home. This was it. Year 7.
