• Friday, July 18th 2018. New Orleans, Louisiana. 11:00am •

A sharp intake of air inhaled from Helen’s lips as she gasped for breath.

Ms. Deville had fallen asleep on the rocking chair out on the front porch again and often was found there snoring away. It was always an act of wonder how elderly people could be one minute having a conversation and the next minute be fast asleep. She reached for her iced tea on the small table and took small sips. The ice had melted away quickly in the 90 degree weather.

"Valerie!" Helen called out once and then again with no reply. She had forgotten that she had sent her out to go fetch some last minute items for the feast the two had prepared. Most of the things were finger foods; cucumber sandwiches, crackers, cheeses, and various fruit and vegetable trays. The main course for lunch was a Spanish dish Val had worked all morning making.

Getting up slowly, Helen walked around to the side yard where Val had set up a long table with chairs. She had set the table to Ms. Deville’s instructions perfectly, and she would have to thank her once she returned home. Checking the small watch upon her wrist she noticed that she had a little less than an hour before the guests were to arrive. Each of them had rsvp’d so quickly when the invitations were sent out. Helen however, wondered if they had really wanted to see her or if they had just felt sorry that she did not have too much time left. They hadn’t really kept in touch beside that, besides Val that was.

Climbing the back steps slowly, Helen went into the kitchen to discover quite the mess on the floor. A trail of a deep crimson, chunky, liquid spread across from the top of the counter, down the cabinet, and across the hardwood floor and into a heating grate against the wall. Helen ran her bony finger along the substance on the marble top, and brought it to her lips. Sniffing, she realized it was in fact a salsa. "Val must have not fed Jack this morning, she's been so busy afterall." Helen thought to herself, and she took a dish rag and began cleaning up the mess that Jack had made. "You know.." she said out loud, "You don’t have to make a mess every time. I told Valerie to feed you and I always sneak you sweets. I hate messes Jack, stop making messes!" The woman was exhausted just cleaning up the salsa. She took wheezed breaths, as she leaned against the counter top. To the unknowing spectator, Helen would probably have seemed just whispering nonsense.

Dark eyes peered at the ankles of Helen, gobbling down the handful of salsa. Jack’s tongue rolled around his fingers, the tangy spice delicious upon his taste buds. Valerie had meant well, but she often did forget about Jack in the midst of her intense care towards Helen. Scrambling and scurrying along the insides of the wall, Jack made his way into his once previous bedroom, the basement.

Valerie ~ Last Minute Party Prep
11:24 AM

Valerie skated full-speed down an empty side street, a canvas bag filled with groceries slung over her shoulder. She knew she needed to hurry - the beans for her plato típico were still on heat, and the last thing she wanted to do was burn them. It wasn’t her decision to go out and get more food - but Helen had insisted, and Val didn’t really mind. But the line at the grocery store was much longer than she’d anticipated, and the trip took far more time than she felt acceptable. Valerie would be damned if her main course was ruined because some lady threw a fit about the cashier not accepting her expired coupons.

She turned a corner and glanced at her watch. All she could think about was how close she was cutting it. She looked up to find herself nearly flattened by a grey minivan driving too fast for the residential area they were in. The driver slammed his brakes, and Val quickly stopped herself as well. “WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH -” she began shouting, but stopped as the driver - her older brother - stepped out of the car. He opened his mouth to speak, but she cut him off with a wave of her hand. “I’m running very late. I’ll see you next week.” And with that, she was off again, throwing another quick wave and a bright smile to her nieces in the backseat. As much as she loved to see her brother and his family, she just didn’t have the time to catch up right now.

Besides, she reasoned with herself, they did have plans for her brother’s birthday next Saturday. She would see them all then, and in a much more pleasant situation.

Not five minutes later, Valerie was back at the house. Helen was not on the front porch, where she had been when Val left, but she didn’t think anything of it as she skated around to the back door. She dropped to her bottom at the threshold and unlaced her skates as quickly as she could, and ran into the kitchen to save her beans - just in time, she found with relief, pulling the pot off heat and tasting it to find it cooked to perfection. Breathing a soft sigh, she turned to the counter where the homemade tortilla chips and salsa were -

“¡Jueputa!”

She found herself face-to-face with Helen, a dish rag stained with her salsa clutched in her boney hands, the bowl up-ended on the floor and most of the tortilla chips gone. Val immediately realised what happened. Taking a deep breath, she put on the most gentle smile she could manage. “I’m sorry,” she almost whispered, as if to offset her previous volume. “Let me take care of this.” She carefully took the rag and threw it into the sink, and cleaned up the remaining mess as quickly and thoroughly as possible.

No salsa and chips. That’s fine, she told herself. There was enough other food to feed eight people. The burner was turned to its lowest heat and the beans were replaced on top - just enough to keep them warm. Taking a deep breath, Valerie found her boots, pulled them on, and went outside to finish preparations. She flicked on the small bluetooth boombox she’d set up, and trad jazz began flowing out of it. Dancing a little to the music, she added the new food she’d purchased to the buffet, arranging it as close to specifications as possible; once that was done, she stepped away and danced more freely, surveying the area to be sure everything was perfect.

"No Charles, cancel my photoshoot for today, remember I have-... What? Bitch I already told you I have a reunion with my friends today... Woah woah woah, what do you mean I didn't tell-... I already told you about it days ago. Remember? We was drinking at your house with-... Yeah yeah, with Sheena cos you're cryin' your ass out when you broke up with your lyin' ass boyfriend for like the millionth time?... O-Oh dear. Please don't cry again. Bitch if you start cryi- And there she goes... Yep, just turning on the waterworks like a wet fourth of July... You know what, I'm just gonna leave you right there. Talk to you later. Love you bitch."

"Don't tell me he's still crying over that guy", Sheena said while driving down the highway.

Graciela sighed. "The things people do for love", she said from the passenger seat.

Graciela leaned her head backwards and let out another sigh. She may love Charles like the gayest and smartest brother she never had, and sometimes Grace will turn to him whenever she had any problems, but Charles was and still is literally dumb as a rock when it came to his on-and-off boyfriend. Even though all the evidence of his boyfriend's cheating ass was right at Charles' face, he'll still love that good-for-nothing man.

"I am sick and tired of him crying his ass out whenever he sees his 'boyfriend' with another man on Instagram. Like, there are tons more better men than 'him'. I swear if I see that guy..."

"Girl, I'm with you on that one. I mean, he didn't even came with us to drop me off on my reunion thingy cos he said he 'has diarrhea', only to find out he's going on a date with that asshole."

Sheena waved at the air with one hand. "Y'know what, let's not talk about Charles anymore. He's a hopeless case. Let's talk about your reunion!"

"Mhmm", Graciela said while checking herself on her phone for the millionth time. "Y'know, it's just so weird. Honestly I kinda forgot 'bout them since it was like a lifetime ago. Good thing I'm still in contact with Ms. Deville, our teacher back then. She's just the sweetest, I'm sure y'all will like her. In fact", she turned her body towards Sheena. "She's one of the first people I confided in before I underwent surgery. I also told her to not tell the rest 'cos I wanna see the look on their faces when they see me."

"Graciela Miranda Wright, always the flair for the dramatic", Sheena exasperatedly said while rolling her eyes, to which Graciela giggled at. "What do you think they'll say to you when they see you now?"

"I honestly don't know, girl. I can't wait to meet them all again...", Graciela said dreamily.

"Looks like you don't have to wait any longer girl. We're here".

After Graciela kissed Sheena on the cheeks, she waved goodbye at her as Sheena continued to drive down the road to go back to their penthouse. Grace turned her attention back at Ms. Deville's house. It was surprisingly cute, in an old-style, vintage looking way, simple yet quaint. Grace could already hear the faint sound of music coming from the backyard, the glow of hung lights, and specially the smell of food. She took one last look on herself on her phone. She wanted to make a long-lasting first impression on her once-classmates so she decided on a simple white dress that hugs her curves well with matching white boots. Gripping the handle of her suitcase and duffel bag, Graciela walked towards the house.

"Showtime."

Truth is stranger than fiction... that is god damn truth through and through. Most people in this world might believe that made up stories are the only places you find weird scenes. Most of those people never really looked at the seedier side of real life much. For example take the situation right here and right now, through the lens of the Nikon d3400, Benjamin watched silently the two individuals in the seedy Motel six just across the street. The blinds were wide open for the whole world to see... than again when you think nobody is watching you often let your guard down. That was always the first mistake humans made.

Click Click

Benjamin pressed the shutter button twice as he took a couple quick pictures of the rich man in the bedroom with his dominatrix. While he could not necessarily hear what was going on in there, he could well imagine the crack of that leather riding crop. It almost made him shudder at the thought of that thing touching his backside. Benjamin was no stranger to pain, it sort of came with being a private detective, but hard leather smacked across butt cheek was definitely a line drawn in the sand for him.

Click Click

Benjamin snapped a couple more pictures, this time the woman was riding the rich man around like some kind of horse, a ball gag was in his mouth. Benjamin shook his head at the sight. He never could understand why rich guys payed for shit like this. All the money in the world and they spend it on a night like this, humiliating themselves to the highest degree for a little intimacy. There wasn't a book in the world that could explain most of the scenes he had snapped pictures of the last thirteen years.

Click Click Click Click

Benjamin snapped photos in quick succession as the rich man and his lady of the night stood up, the diaper he was wearing was almost too much for him to bare. It even had a blue ribbon bow tied across the front, you couldn't pay for pictures like this. Benjamin lowered the camera when the two started to get a bit more exotic, he had already procured more than enough evidence that this rich prick was two timing his wife. Although when he had first received the job he had not imagined this was the actual outcome, she had been so sure he was with woman entirely not one night stands. Most definitely not one night stands like this either, he would have to charge a little extra for this one, he was never going to erase these images from his head.

Than again... the irony of this situation was that the wife was cheating on her husband already herself. She had taken a lover probably a couple weeks before she came to him looking for proof on her husband. He had spent a couple nights detailing her nightly interludes too. It was not part of his job of course but sometimes rich people seemed to believe they could stiff him the bill. Leverage was the one thing that ensured a proper pay day. The thing was if the wife could catch her husband cheating she could divorce him and take half of everything, but if the opposite came to be he could divorce her and she would get nothing. So in reality it was a choice of who had more to lose in the end and who had more to pay him for his services.

This was often what happened when it came to cases such as this. It was all about greed, getting what you want and anyone who gets in the way be damned. Benjamin reached into his jacket pocket and removed a crumpled pack of Marlboros and flicked the pack as one shot up. He placed it between his lips and took out a gold plated zippo and lite it. The cherry lite up the abandoned room he was in across the way, it was an abandoned building that used to house apartments. It was far past that now, nothing but old wall paper, disconnected pipes and maybe even some dusty old furniture someone left behind. It was far from a glorious life for him, that again jobs like this often took him to places like this. You wouldn't think it, but Benjamin was pretty well off than most.

When one thought of a private detective they think of a chain smoking, drinking, monkey in a brown overcoat and a bowler hat. They took any job no matter how dirty and often cried themselves to sleep wishing life had been different in some shitty one room apartment. That was not his case, even though his parents had pushed him away they still loved him enough to help him financially at least until he had made it somewhere. The first couple years in this gig had been pretty hard, in fact at one point he nearly quit entirely, he was barely scraping enough money to pay his rent none the less food. That was the real low point in his career, he was the one in a one room apartment, with nothing but mom and dads money to tide him over.

At one point he had even been in with a booky for a time who had threatened to break his knee caps weekly if he didn't cough up what was owed. An seeming when it rains it pours, the moment his parents got tired of him and cut him love or not, he was really in the shit for a time. Things changed though, not over night but it was that one case... the case he cracked involving a mass murderer who had been terrorizing a small town in Denver that drove him up through the cracks of poverty and higher into the sky. It was during that time he realized just how good he was at piecing together clues, coming up with theories when others were picking their noses and scratching their heads. He had a knack for taking nothing and finding something that others had missed.

For a short while he was the wonder Detective who had played a key role in putting away the worst serial killer since Zodiac. The fame did not last half as long but the reputation he had gained from that one case alone was enough to put him on the map for all to see. His book filled up so fast with cases he barely had enough time to finish one before two more came in. Most of his cases were rich people looking for a little discretion. Once in awhile he would get contacted for off the book cases that had a little more pizzazz to them so it was well worth it. The money he subsequently got at the same time was also worth it even if it was rather boring.

Benjamin blew out a final puff of smoke as he dropped the smoke and crushed it out under his worn leather steel toed boot. He pulled out his cellphone from his black jacket and clicked it on illuminating the time. It was about one in the morning he would return home and get these pictures developed, he would be meeting the soon to be divorced wife early in the morning. Getting up from the old wooden chair the floor creaked under his feet as he took one last look at the motel window with his camera. The blinds were finally drawn, it was just too bad they had not done it earlier, than maybe the job would have been a bit more challenging.

“Could you not smoke? The smell of those dirty things is almost too much to bare.”

Benjamin didn't reply as he sat across from his client at her rather luxurious estate on the outside of town. They were definitely rich, marble floors, glass chandeliers, gold crusted tables, a butler on standby practically hanging around the doorway. Reaching under his leather jacket Benjamin pulled a manila envelope out and slid it onto the table it stopped mere inches from Mrs. Buxley's hand. Mrs. Buxley was about what one would expect, a well do lady with brown hair, thousand dollar perm of course, smooth complexion a result of inexpensive age cream, diamond jewelry on her ears and fingers, expensive clothing made of the finest materials, and green eye's full of greed and lust.

Ignoring the earlier remark about his cigarette she took the envelope and opened it, she pulled out the 8x10 photos and went through them silently one by one. Her face twisted in fake shock and disgust as she looked at the last of the photo's before laying them back on the table in a sort of comical huff.

“How dare he do this to me! To us! An with this... this...”

“Dominatrix.”

The word threw Mrs. Buxley off as Benjamin spoke it in a light southern accent, his voice deep with a slight scratchy texture to it. The woman eye'd him with almost a look of spite however she quickly looked away, after all she had to play the victim. The crocodile tears soon came after as Benjamin watched her heart supposedly breaking. The whole I can't believe it, I am so hurt, I want to kill myself routine he had seen so many times now.

“My job is complete Mrs. Buxley, if you would be so kind as to pay me my fee I will depart and leave you to your husband's chicanery.”

“Of course.. you have done your job and earned your fee.”

Mrs. Buxley waved over the butler, a balding skinny mustached man of about probably late fifties in a monkey suit. He lowered a serving tray of fake silver with an envelope on it, Benjamin took it and opened it revealing the large sum of money mostly in hundred dollars bills. Pocketing the money Benjamin nodded his head to Mrs. Buxley and showed himself out. He walked across the fine gravel driveway, across from him was his black 1967 Chevy Impala, placing a pair of black rimmed aviators over his eye's he hopped in the car and the engine roared to life. Putting the car in gear it rolled across the gravel and toads the front gate, as he approached a white Rose Royce came through the gate driven by a chauffeur. For just a moment Benjamin caught the eye of Mr. Buxley as he pulled out of the gate and speed down the road.

Benjamin inserted the key into the lock of his office quietly, the door was made of wood but steel lined for security purposes. There was a large piece of bullet proof glass centered in the door, his name was written on the door above a gold shield enveloped by a large eye, with Private Detective written in the center. The door clicked as it opened and he walked in closing it behind him.

“Mr. Marks welcome back I assume your meeting went well?”

Benjamin looked over at the woman who was about his age if not a couple years younger. She was a beautiful woman in all respects, auburn straight flowing hair, emerald green eye's, smooth complexion and a body with all the right curves. She even spoke in a rather light voice that was thick with one who once lived in the Bronx. If he had to describe her way of speaking he could only think of Harley from Batman, she was after all a splitting image of her in some ways.

“Surprisingly. I had the old bat figured 10 to 1 on trying lower my fee or trying to rip me of completely. But she payed up without much coaxing, probably knew her husband was going to be home really soon so she had no choice but to play ball and get me out of the house.”

Ashley nodded her head as he caught her eye's, she blushed a little every time her eye's got caught in his. She would than quickly look away as he approached his desk, he was not blind to the fact that Ashley had a puppy crush on him. He just didn't care, most men would think he had lost his damn mind to not wanna take on a girl like Ashley, but he cared not for such things as it was, at least not with her. When he had found her, she was a struggling grad student who had more bills than money and the tolls of stress were starting to break her down. He had offered her a job as his secretary, someone to take cares of things while he was on job. When she had taken the job at first he figured eventually she would get enough money, graduate college and than quit, that had been the thought anyways.

He had never expected her to stay, to fall in love with him and consider him to be her soulmate, at least that's what she said when she got drunk on the night of that new years party and he drove her home. She was a lot like Steve Urkel from Family Matters, at least in her relentlessness to try and wear him down. He had to admit it had almost worked for her at some junctures, but he couldn't... there was only one person in this world for him, even though he constantly told himself to let it go, to move on, to get over it. The ironic truth was that Ashley was a lot like him, she wouldn't let him go and he won't let the one he desired go.

“Your mail is on the desk you got a couple bills, an invitation to a new BBQ joint opening on Holland and I think a letter from your parents, its got the old style writing on it.”

“Thanks Ashley..”

Benjamin sat at his desk and went through the mail, electric bill, water bill, he tossed them aside and looked at the invitation to Greg's Finger licking Chicken BBQ. Benjamin rolled his eye's, thats cute he thought to himself as he tossed it into the trash beside his desk. Benjamin was about to open the plain envelope when there was a furious knocking on his door.

“Open up you son of a bitch!”

Benjamin rolled his eye's as he thought ~right on time~, he looked over at Ashley who was eyeing the door, she than looked at him mouthing if she should open or were they out of the office? Benjamin moved his hand motioning for her to open it. She walked to the door and opened it as Mr. Buxley was standing on the other side, his face was red and he was huffing. Mr. Buxley was a fat balding monk hair style of a man with puffy piggy cheeks and small beady eye's. Honestly he looked like a pig in Armani, the little flat nose, the big gut, all he was missing was the curly tail and hoofed feet.

“Mr. Buxley I am pleased to see you without the diaper. One time was enough to last me a lifetime. So what brings you to my little neck of the woods?”

Benjamin was completely indifferent to the pissed off little piggish man before him, in fact it was almost casual as he placed cigarette between his lips and gave it a light taking a drag from it. Mr. Buxley's face was red before but the mention of him wearing a diaper made it ten times worse. It also raised his anger from pissed to rage.

“How dare you take pictures of me!! You perverted son of a bitch!! You have ruined my marriage and you sit there looking smug, as if none of this ever matters even in the slightest to you!!”

It was painfully obvious he had not rehearsed this conversation before barging in. They never did, anger was a powerful thing if used correctly but in this case it only furthered the stupidity of the moment.

“No I believe the picture with the leather saddle on your back and your lady of the night on riding on it smacking your ass with a riding crop did that. Although I have a feeling your marriage was ruined either way, the way I see it either she found you out or you found her out. It wasn't a matter of if, but a matter of when it happened.”

Benjamin inserted a key into the drawer on his desk and unlocked it, he removed the copies of the photo's of Mrs. Buxley and lay them on the desk before Mr. Buxley could continue his tirade of obscenities. The man became even more red in the face as he looked at the rather naughty pictures, his little eye's became orbs of great rage.

“That deceptive little bitch! How dare she cheat on me and than try to divorce me and take my money!”

Benjamin shook his head, the entire situation was boring and unnecessary, the truth was these two people belonged together. They were both greedy, cheating, backstabbing, liars. The mere fact she betrayed Benjamin and broke his rule about revealing his name to her husband is more than enough to prove that. It was obvious she was trying to divert the blame to him and that was not going to happen. Like he said before when your dealing with rich people always have insurance.

“Your wife offered me ten thousand dollars to get those pictures of you Mr. Buxley, so your going to give me twenty thousand for these photo's.”

Benjamin was clam and collected, decisive and direct as he pulled the pictures away from the desk, he tapped the edges on his desk forming them together and than placing them back in his desk. Mr. Buxley glared at him hard as his little hands went into fists.

“How dare you blackmail me! You just a dishonest crook!”

“Look at it this way Mr. Buxley, those pictures are going to be quite the scandal during the divorce proceedings. So in that sense, if you don't want the world to know you wear adult diapers with little ribbons on them your going to do what I say. So listen closely, you have two choices. One you give me twenty thousand dollars, I give you these photo's, and you can fight it out with your wife until the both of you realize your greedy little piggy shits and deserve each other. Your second option is to get the hell out of my office and never come back, get divorced, and have your fat white ass plastered all over the internet. I think its about time you decide what your willing to sacrifice.”

The fat little man opened his mouth to say something, he wanted to say a lot probably but he didn't. Benjamin had him by his diaper strings and he damn well knew it. Benjamin blew smoke into Mr. Buxley's face, the man coughed angrily. He turned with a huff and walked back to the door, upon reaching it he pulled it open hard and started to walk out but stopped. He stood their for a minute as if in contemplation and than suddenly spoke in a more defeated tone:

“I will have the money in an hour.”

Ashley closed the door quietly as Benjamin shook his head putting the cigarette out in the ashtray. He picked up the letter again from the desk and opened it taking out the neatly folded paper inside. His whole demeanor changed after that. Ashley noticed almost immediately as she walked to his desk and tried to peer at the letter he was reading he didn't try to stop her. She walked around his desk and read it herself.

“Are you going to go”

The question was simple and direct, Ashley did not know much about his past and she had learned well enough not to ever ask or try to mention it. Benjamin had not been the kindest of people when others tried to pry into his life. He said nothing, he just folded the piece of paper back up, slipped it into the envelope, and put his hand over the desk to toss it in the trash. His his fingers however didn't let go like his brain told them to. He had no desire to ever go back to that hellhole town or to see the people he had grown up with in school, in fact he was resolved to forget them entirely. But even now he couldn't convince himself that was entirely true.

While he may not have loved Mrs. Deville, she was kind to him unlike so many others including his perfect parents whom he wanted to stay as far away from as possible. He knew the real reason he couldn't let that invitation go through, why he couldn't just ignore it, and it most definitely was not purely because his old nice teacher was dieing. People die everyday that was just the reality of it, no it was someone else that edged at the back of his mind, gnawed at him and ate away his walls and layers he had built over the years. The only one in the whole world he would have sacrificed anything for, the one he did sacrifice things for even if they never knew it. Benjamin retracted his hand as he looked at the envelope.

“Push back my cases.. I am taking a day or two Ashley.”

Benjamin drove the car quietly, Ashley was sitting beside him in the passenger seat, she seemed almost excited that he had accept her proposal for her to go along with him even if she wasn't going to the actual party with him. In truth he didn't trust anyone around his car, Ashley was there to drive it away to his parents house where she would wait for him. He didn't like the idea of it but his parents lived in a gated community so no one would mess with it there. He just hoped Ashley wouldn't learn anything from them, that was the last thing he needed. When he had pulled up he was a short distance away, he found the house quite... quaint for lack of better terminology even from his distance. He was already having misgivings about the whole thing, he could just turn around and leave now but he knew the urge would pull him in. He had parked far enough away just in case he changed his mind but that wasn't happening it seemed.

He exited the vehicle as Ashley got out with him and looked at the house, she stood next to him, she tried to loop her fingers into his but he pulled his hand away casually. Benjamin sighed and popped the trunk through the open drivers window and walked to it. Inside was a medium sized black bag, he pulled it out and set it on the ground. Reaching up he yanked off the leather coat he was wearing revealing the black muscle shirt beneath accenting his toned body. He reached up and unclasped the brown holster that was concealed under his coat, taking it off he put it and the Beretta 92 in the trunk before closing it. He slipped his leather coat back on as he looked at the house again, he could hear the music and smell the aroma of food from around the back.

“You know what to do Ashley. My parents are waiting, they will put you up for a couple nights or so while I am here. I will call when its time to go. Try not to talk to them too much.”

Fat chance she would listen but this was the best he had for now. Ashley nodded her head as she extended her arms to give him a goodbye hug but he stopped her shaking his head. She swallowed a bit hard but none the less turned away and climbed in the car, she waved before she departed. Benjamin sighed again as he bent down and picked up the black bag. It matched his attire perfectly, a pair of steel tipped dress shoes, black jeans, black muscle shirt, his leather coat, plain leather belt and the black rimmed sunglasses he always wore. He looked more like he was going to a funeral than a party, but he never did care much for appearance or what people thought of him.

Well there was no putting it off any longer he slung the bag over his shoulder and walked towards the house.

"I think it's so wonderful that you'll be home this weekend to see your old buddies."

Vivian Booker couldn't help but roll her eyes as she remembered the words that her mother had spoke through the phone earlier that day. It was a little over eleven o'clock in the morning, and the young woman was sitting in the passenger seat of her fiancee's vehicle. The couple had gotten on the road a little over thirty minutes ago, as soon as they had left the airport, and were less than a few minutes away from their destination. The feeling of dread and anxiety that currently took over Vivian's body was the strongest she'd felt in years; she hadn't felt this bad since her second day of Elementary school. Vivian let her right hand dangle out of the window as her mind drifted back to the second time she'd stepped foot into Ms. Deville's classroom. Most of her classmates had been so awful to her since the very moment they'd laid eyes on her; it was a wonder that Harvey had managed to talk her into coming along with him.

Old buddies. Vivian had to fight the urge to let out a bitter laugh. While the bunch weren't always so mean to her, she wouldn't go as far as to call them old buddies. Not once in the past couple of decades had Vivian even cared to think about her old classmates or what they were up to these days; in fact, she sometimes wished that she could just wipe those few years worth of memories from her mind completely.

"I'm sorry to hear about your old teacher," Vivian's mother said, "but at least it gives you a chance to reconnect with your friends."

Throughout those long years of Elementary school, Vivian's mother had always been in the dark about what went on in class when Ms. Deville wasn't looking. She had no idea that her youngest daughter was often picked on whenever she left the house wearing the only pair of jeans they could afford. She had no idea that it was because of one of the older neighborhood kids teasing her about her worn-down sneakers that she was once caught shoplifting. She had no idea that the handmade Christmas present she'd stayed up all night to help her daughter create for one of her classmates was eventually torn up and thrown away right in front of her. No, Vivian figured that it would be best for her to keep everything bottled up inside. After all, she didn't want to give her parents anything else to worry about.

Instead, Vivian kept to herself and poured her feelings onto the empty pages of her old journal. The characters that she created over those years were the only people who seemed to truly understand exactly what she was going through. They were the only ones who made those few years of pain bearable. Well, them and her soon to be husband.

"Aren't you a little nervous?" Vivian said to her fiancee, "I don't even know what I'm going to say to them when we walk inside. I mean, what is there to say?" As Vivian spoke, the car pulled into the driveway of Ms. Deville's home, and the nauseous feeling in the pit of her stomach grew more intense. While part of her was excited to show off her new wardrobe and shiny engagement ring to her former classmates, the other part was wondering why she even bothered to show up in the first place. The closer the vehicle came to her old teacher's home, the louder the music grew, and the stronger a delicious aroma became.

As soon as the car came to a stop, Vivian got out and pulled out her two duffel bags from the backseat. Before approaching the front door, the young woman used her reflection in the car door to make sure that everything was still in its rightful place. She gently smoothed down the front of her tan-colored dress before slinging one of the bags over her shoulder and nervously glancing up at her fiancee.

"Ready?"

Donald Laclède gritted his teeth, his obvious discomfort being obviously apparent to anyone who looked at him – not that his cab driver particularly gave a shit about his mood as long as he paid for his fare. And there was no question that a big star like Donnie wouldn’t.

Honestly, Donnie wasn’t sure why he had decided to come back to Rising Sun Elementary School for the reunion. When he read the invitation in his Los Angeles home he had a surge of anxiety and dread as a flood of unpleasant memories came to the forefront of his mind. He remembered his fellow students and how he treated them in the worst possible ways. He wasn’t sure what had happened to Valerie, George, Vivian, Eddie, Harvey, and Ben; and he still wasn’t sure how comfortable he was going to be facing them as adults all these years later. But at the end of the day, he still put those thoughts in the back of his head and got on the plane from Los Angeles to New Orleans.

He took a light breath as he looked at the ceiling of the cab.

What could he say to them? Would an apology even be warranted after two decades apart? Would the smart thing be pretending it never happened or to just ignore it unless it was brought up? As far as he was concerned they were all kids back then and childhood bickering was part of growing up. He had already paid his penance for his mistakes when his baseball career was thrown out of the window and his wife with it. Anything his former classmates could say to him wouldn’t hurt him anymore than he had hurt himself. Besides, if he felt the reunion was a waste of time and just a bunch of petty bullshit he could just walk out the door and head back to L.A. Mrs. Deville couldn’t keep him there against his will, after all.

As he mused to himself, he almost didn't realize the car had come to a stop. The voice of the cab driver as clear as the day.

“Sir. We’ve arrived.”

“Thank you.” He uttered as he moved to open the door. A quick few movements of grabbing his luggage and moving for the old building. And then the weekend would begin.

Gods, he hoped it wasn’t a mistake coming back here.

Eddie pulled up to the house with a smile. It had been many years since he had heard from any of them. He remembered each of them and had thought of them often. However, he didn't feel any malice or anger towards how they had treated him. They were kids. They have grown up. This would be a chance for a fresh start. As he sat in his car, listening to his music, he didn't notice the car and cab that had pulled up.

He turned his radio off and climbed out of his car, noticing Donnie getting out of the cab. "Hey, Donnie. How's everything been? Got a family yet?" He tried to act cheerful and welcoming as he eyed the man. His accent had obviously faded but it was still there. His voice betrayed that he was still subconsciously afraid of him.

He looked to the house with a smile as he began up the steps. "A couple of decades since we walked up these steps." he said with a glance at Donnie. "Feels a bit nostalgic, don't it?"

He knocked loudly, not wanting to be rude and just walk in. That was one thing his mother had always drilled into his head. He missed her but felt he would see her again on his trip to Europe. He almost wished his family was still in the states but understood why they had moved back. Eddie hadn't been able to join them at the time but he knew they wouldn't have wanted to force him away from his job.

Aproximately 8 AM.

"Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury. Over the past two days, you have been presented pure facts. And the facts show that Mrs. Gertrud did agree to the treatment. But they also show that she wasn't fully informed of the risks that said treatment entailed. The hospital wanted to shut her up because they knew precisely what may be uncovered. Looking into Dr. Hansing's past, there is a clear history of victims."

"Objection, Your Honor."

"I apologize. Let me rephrase. There is a clear history of experimenting with various medicinal practices. Mrs. Gertrud is simply the only one who was determined to speak up. All the facts lay before you. But when you go back there to deliberate, don't think only in facts. Let the emotions and feelings of those wronged by this doctor and hospital enter your minds. Try to think the way they did. If you do, you will see there is no other outcome of this trial. Thank you."

"She says thank you, Mr. Lee."

Sitting in his high-class office with his most recent client and her daughter Harry smiles. Another outcome for good. Another helpless person aided through this horrible world. "You can call me Harry. And no need for thanks. The moment your mother came to me I was set on this course. If you ever need anything give me a call." The two gave their final thanks to Harry and even tried to pay him, but the lawyer would have none of it. He'd say the platter of cookies was enough. So far his morning had been fantastic. But then the ringing of his phone occurred, and the voice on the other end reminded him of why he had pushed for such an early morning time at court. Today he was going back to his old elementary school and was reconnecting with former 'friends.' Hopefully, no issues would arise from the trip down memory lane. But first, he had to pick up Vee from the airport.

The drive had been mostly quiet other than the old jazz cd, from when Uncle Gus still played, pouring sweet melodies from the speakers. As they neared the destination, conversation soon picked up. "Of course I'm nervous. We haven't seen them in years. And don't worry about what to say. Everyone is bound to have changed just like we did. If anyone says or does anything you don't like we can just leave. What's past is past. We can easily forget them again." In all honesty though Harry was kind of excited. He hadn't seen any of them in years and he couldn't wait to see them again. Especially Valerie.

Getting out of the car, Harry grabbed his bag and the cookies from Mrs. Gertrud. He didn't feel right not bringing something to add to the table. "Let's go."

Mrs. Helen Deville

Disheartened but not in the slightest angry at Valerie, Helen release the dish rag as the young woman took care of the mess. "Thank you sweetheart..." Helen cooed, as she watched Valerie so eagerly go around the kitchen and around the house to make the finalizing touches. Helen was reminded of her own past- her eagerness for each school year, bringing fresh young youth through the door. Eventually she found herself outside as well, settling down in a large adirondack chair in the shade. The traditional jazz was just the right amount of rhythm. Helen slowly began to doze off, her day just starting but already needing a quick rest.

From the basement Jack watched his precious Valerie dance. Her elongated legs so free, a smile adoring her face as she looked so carefree and happy. Jack adored Valerie, she was so kind and thoughtful bringing delicious meals and sometimes even taking his side against Mama. He breathed heavily against the window, fogging up the glass as he watched intently from the cut holes of his homemade rabbit mask. Someday they would be happily dancing together, but for now he had to just watch from afar. Someday.

There was something about being old that put you on a very thin line of sleeping so heavily that the house could be robbed under your nose, or quite the opposite and the sound of the front steps creaking under the weight of a visitor shot Helen's eyes open. Her throat was a little raspy from the snores that were trumpeting from her. Knocks could be heard as Helen hurried to her feet as fast as her body could manage. "Just a moment!" she called out, steadying herself on any banister and furniture she could get her hands on. Opening the door, she looked to the few students who had gathered in the yard and on the overly large front porch.

A genuine smile spread across her lips as she looked from face to face. "I am so happy y'all decided to come.. Please, please come in!" she scuttled out of the door way as she propped open the entry way. Valerie had taken care of the place with the utmost care though the place had surely aged since all the students had attending. Mysterious stains could be seen on the ceiling, but would be assumed to be from water damage from the heavy rains the area often got.

"Valerie is out back, we should join her. Drop your bags in the living room and we will show you your rooms later." Helen continued as the group began to file in, Helen had gotten a shot of energy from seeing how many people had actually agreed to show up and really came through with their promises.

Current Location: House, Main Door

Before Donnie could respond to Eddie, the doors to the old building were opened and Mrs. Deville had begun ushering them through the house and toward the back. She spoke of Valerie, like she was the first to arrive. It didn't really surprise him given that Valerie had been a go-getter in the past. He couldn't help but think back to how he treated her. It was weird to grow older and wiser. But sometimes he wished he was still the asshole he was as a kid and young man. It was easier to deal with people when you didn't care about them and thought the world revolved around you. He looked back to Eddie, as he did as Mrs. Deville requested, dropping his suitcase in the living room.

“Seems like everyone's all here.” Donnie commented, chuckling as he did so.

"Ms. Deville!" Grace happily exclaimed as she threw her arms open to embrace the old lady and kiss her on the cheeks. She was pretty sure her former classmates will wonder about this stranger who acts like she knew Ms. Deville but she let them wonder about that. Only Grace and Ms. Deville herself knew of her transition and who she truly is, and she decided to save it for later as a huge surprise for them.

"I am like so happy and relieved you still remember me. Oh but then again, how would you forget a pretty face such as this?" Grace joked with Ms. Deville. She held the old lady at arm's length and quickly did a head to toe survey. "My my, Ms. Deville. You're still looking pretty despite your age. Don't worry Mama D, wait is it alright if I call you Mama D instead? Anyways, I have like a bunch of clothes I think would look good on you. Oh, I can't wait to glam you up!" She excitedly said to Ms. Deville. Grace can't contain her happiness and excitement upon talking with her former teacher, and she decided this was the perfect opportunity to catch up and tell her how thankful she was for Ms. Deville's guidance and support.

"Oh but before that" Grace put her things beside the couch. "Can you lead me to the restroom? I need to pee and I need to like freshen up and all that" She asked Ms. Deville.

To say that Vivian was nervous would be the understatement of the decade, but as soon as that front door swung open and Mrs. Deville's smiling face appeared at the doorway, it was as if all of her nerves had momentarily disappeared. Vivian threw her arms around the frail, elderly woman as soon as she got the chance, being careful not to squeeze her too tight in fear that she'd break her. Although she hadn't really kept in contact with her old elementary teacher, she did often find herself missing her. Mrs. Deville was nothing short of kind, sweet, and understanding to all of her students, something that Vivian greatly appreciated. "It's nice to see you again," Vivian said to the woman after pulling away from their brief hug, "I've missed you." After moving out of the way to allow the others inside, Vivian did as Mrs. Deville instructed and placed her bags on one of the living room couches.

Soon, Vivian found herself looking at the few adults that had gathered in the living room, her eyebrows raised as she tried to match names with faces. The easiest to match, of course, was none other than Donald Laclède. Although not keeping in contact with any of her old classmates, Vivian did happen to know a bit about what the man had been up to in his adult years; as much as she hated to admit it, she was a fan of the TV show he just so happened to star in. The next face Vivian recognized was that of Edvvard Erikson, the boy who'd moved from some foreign country later in one of their school years. Vivian could vividly remember when he'd first arrived; the other kids had picked on him because of his heavy accent.

Next, Vivian's eyes landed upon Benjamin Marks, a boy whom she, unfortunately, vaguely remembered. Much like Vivian, Benjamin had never been much of a talker, and spent most of his time with his head buried in a book. Lastly, Vivian spotted an unfamiliar woman speaking to Mrs. Deville and couldn't help but furrow her brows in confusion. Rather than stare at the woman, Vivian simply shrugged her shoulders and refocused her attention on the two men who stood a few feet away. After only a moments hesitation, the woman took a deep breath and approached the two, a small smile on her face. "Eddie. Donnie," Vivian said with two slight nods of her head, "Good to see you two again."

Eddie looked around at everyone, recognizing mostly everyone. "Hey, Mrs. Deville." he smiled, wrapping his arms around her gently. He said a few words in his native tongue, something he hoped would make the older woman smile. He moved of to the side where Donnie already sat. It wasn't long before Vivian joined them. "Hey, Vivian. How you been? Married yet?" he asked with a chuckle.

Current Location: House

Vivian Booker had changed a lot since Donnie had last seen her. But he supposed everyone had changed a lot since they had all seen each other. If they hadn't, the whole reunion was probably going to be a disaster; and very few of the group likely wanted a disaster to happen. In fact, Mrs. Deville probably hadn't even considered the idea that things could go poorly. She never really "saw" the bad behavior back when the students were children. But a lifetime apart was enough for those who had hurt feelings to get over it. But Donnie had seen his share of adults being melodramatic since he had moved from Houston to Hollywood. Adults were rarely as mature as they wanted people to think they were.

“Good to see you, too.” He mangaged, right before Eddie had obliviously asked her about her relationship status.
