I thought we'd be forming the crew as we go (of course pretty fast so that no one's waiting to long to be fully participating) or are we already somewhat formed? Cuz you mentioned the flag and made it seem like we're already decently well known.
As for the flag, since most seemed to be based off the captain I was thinking a rose over one eye of the skull and thorn vines wrapping around the whole~

Name: Nero Lystre Alias: Demon Eye Age: 19 Position: Sniper/Assistant Doctor Bounty: WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE: 9 Mil. Berris Appearance:
Personality: Nero is a rough young man with a good heart. He is kind and caring, willing to stand up for the weak and innocent, and loyal to the ones that earned his trust, but this usually masked by a distant and calm persona. Despite this, he won't hesitate to get into a fight to defend the aforementioned people even if it's likely to end in his defeat, regardless of consequences. Although it's case to case, he generally goes by the rule of 'get what you give' and repay people's actions with equal intent; kindness with kindness, spite with spite.
In the rare occasion that he breaks his mask of calm, his anger is vicious and aggressive. He will set his sights on a target and won't stop until they are destroyed, with very few people being able to stop him trying. Only those he has a great respect for can calm him down, but he will retain his grudge until he can pay them back in full.
Background: Nero was born in an unremarkable coastal village on a small island in the East Blue, and that's where he was raised for most of high life. His mother, Arianna Dean, was a ex-Marine Lieutenant well-known for her skill with a firearm and his father, Kain Lystre, was a civilian doctor. The pair had fallen in love while Arianna was still serving, wounded after a anti-piracy sweep went wrong, and Kain had been the one to nurse her back to health. When she discovered she was pregnant with Nero, she resigned from the marines and the two settled down on the island. Growing up, Nero learned the skills of both his mother and father, as his mother would regularly take him out hunting for food or skins to sell and he would spend the rest of his time helping his father at his clinic or on call.
Despite being a natural with a gun, he was perfectly content to take over his Father's role in the future, but fate had other plans. When he was about 17, The Marines launched an attack on a pirate hotspot on the next island over. This meant that the survivors lucky enough to escape soon arrived at his village, and they're were granted asylum on the grounds that they didn't cause any trouble (Arianna and her guns saw to that) and made themselves useful to the village. Everything seemed to settle down after a few weeks, but then the Marines showed up to mop up the survivors. The villagers, having grown to trust the ex-pirates they had taken in, argued their case but were instead branded as co-conspirators and began to be arrested in bulk. Arianna, having been an ex-marine, got quite angry with the heavy-handed approach and started arguing with the Marines. This escalated until tensions boiled over and the marine panicked, firing his weapon and fatally wounding her. This was the first and only time Nero ever saw his father get truly enraged as he immediately took her gun and killed the man responsible, igniting an all-out battle between the Marines and the villagers. Somehow (in truth, a villager had done so to try and save him from the fighting), A blow struck the back of Nero's head and knocked him unconscious.
When he came too, the battle was over and the villagers had lost. The few that survived were being rounded up by the surviving Marines, but without the man-power to secure them, the Marines just executed them. Using his mother's rifle and hiding amongst the ruins of his village, he picked them off the survivors one by one and used his mother's pistol to finish the wounded ones, execution style. His revenge not yet satisfied, he took a small sailing boat and travelled from island to island, working as a bounty hunter to survive and occasionally taking attacks on Marine targets when the opportunity arose. Unfortunately, his face was seen and he was soon issued a bounty of his own.
With time, his desire for revenge calmed down and he stopped actively attacking the Marines, instead focussing on bounty hunting. This didn't stop the Marines from trying though, and with each failed arrest his bounty grew. He wasn't stupid though, and recognised that it would get more and more difficult to survive on his own. He needed allies, or maybe even comrades... Abilities: Marksmanship - Nero is a natural with a firearm, and he has honed his skills to an art-form. It's rumoured that He can pick up a gun and make it sing if he wanted, regularly pushing them to perform beyond what was capable.
Gun Kata - Using a very rudimentary understanding of basic martial arts combined with his own agility and skills in gunplay, he devised a system of short to mid range combat using a one-handed firearm, or pair of, to hold off against combatants at close range.
Medical techniques - while certainly no miracle worker, Nero has enough practical knowledge to treat most physical wounds and common ailments. Weapons: Ebon and Ravensdown - The weapons used by his mother, her pistol and rifle respectively. No special modifications, just plain muskets with custom black lacquer finish.
Conflict and Discord - Twinned custom-work pistols with a 6-shot cylinder and strengthened construction for use of specialised ammo
Demon's Eye - The heavily modified rifle for which he gained his moniker
Techniques:
Using special bullets that use special effects in lieu of physical rounds, can be used with any firearm but those not specially built to withstand them can be damaged just by firing them. Burning Shot: Ignis - A bullet of fire, igniting its target Freezing Shot: Glacio - A bullet of freezing liquid, encasing whatever it hits with ice and inflicting a frostbite effect Lightning Shot: Fulgur - A bullet of lightning, bypassing metallic armour and clothing to shock a target Concussive Shot: Sonus - A bullet of concussive sound, deafening and disorientating those nearby when it explodes Capture Shot: Laqueum - A rope-dart type of bullet that tangles up its target in steel wire
A special system of fighting at close to mid range By combining martial arts with Conflict and Discord. He can't remember where he heard it refered to as 'gunkata' for the first time, but he like the sound of it and coined the name. Gunkata: Steel Lotus Shower - A highly acrobatic move used when surrounded, he flips multiple time in the air while simultaneously firing in multiple directions to strike multiple targets. Gunkata: Reflex Shot - Firing a number of shots that richochet off one-another to bypass a target's defences, similar to feint attack in swordplay. Gunkata: Iron Thorn - a counter-attack move, he flips over an attacking enemy and fires into their exposed backs in mid-air. Also effective against closely grouped enemies
Martial Arts - defenceless without a gun and with an abhorrent detest for swords and other melee weapons, Nero learned to use his own body as a weapon out of necessity. Using a hybrid style incorporating techniques from across the 4 Blues, such as Fishman Karate, Rokushiki and Ryusoken, he can overpower most foes, but those specialising in Close-quarters with win most of the time against him. To give him an edge up, however, Nero can combine his gunplay and martial arts into a special series of 'Gun-kata' techniques.
A free-form style of fighting with moves borrowed from several major martial arts styles. (Moves are explained on respective One Piece Wiki pages, so I can't be bothered to re-write them all) Hyakumaigawara Seiken - Borrowed From Fishman Karate Karakusagawara Seiken - Borrowed From Fishman Karate Geppo, Tekkai, Soru, Kami-e - All Borrowed from Rokushiki Ryu no Kagizume - Borrowed from Ryusoken
Let me know if anything needs adjusting
I'm leaving the rest of the character to the jurisdiction of Noodles, but I'm calling this part out. I'm wondering how he got to learn all these martial arts techniques from around the world WHILE ALSO being a sniper and a doctor.
Not only does it eliminate his greatest weakness, which is being without weapons/in melee range, these skills are also way too advanced for an east blue character. Karakusagawara Seiken has only been done by Jinbe (literally the strongest fishman karate user in the series). The rokushiki techniques are extremely powerful, and he learned himself all the defensive ones (why would he need the offensive ones? He has guns and fishman karate. So he basically knows everything he'd ever need from rokushiki). Ryu no Kagizume has only been shown by sabo, who is the vice commander of the entire revolutionary army so obviously strong. And this technique took down a vice admiral in one shot.
I also want to point out the dream of my own character is to travel the world and learn various martial arts. Yet here comes a character who basically already knows all prominent martial arts displayed in the one piece world to a pretty good extend. This makes my own character basically moot.
I'm really not sure why you need martial arts. You can be strong enough with just gunplay. Sorry if I'm sounding rude but I just can't agree with this being accepted.
@Melo I feel like I probably overcompensated because I feel like every time I leave and obvious and exploitable weakness, it get so abused by GMs or other PCs that it saps the fun out. On reflection, I should probably remove it, but I'm leaving Gunkata as is, considering how rarely One-Piece battles actually stay at long range.
@Shadow Daedalus I'm not arguing to make your character absolutely useless at close range, so I think leaving gunkata in is fair in my opinion. ^^ His mother could've definitely taught him some tricks in that.
My problem was mostly with the martial arts part since most of those techniques were far above east blue level and handpicked from a variety of unrelated styles. (which sounds like a very difficult feat, which is why I made that the end goal of my character).
Thank you for understanding. I think I came off as fairly aggressive in my other post, so sorry if I sounded particularly harsh xD
