French Foreign Legionnaires, present day combat in Afghanistan

TL;DR Summary

- Discord Chat for questions and brainstorming. (web-based, anonymous.)
- Science Fiction Setting
- It starts out with modern technology and moves into more alien tech.
- Characters are mercenaries that signed onto a newly-formed PMC called Centurion Strategic Services; the client is assumed to be a foreign entity.
- Client is actually an alien species that needs someone who can fight the wars for them.
- While Centurion fields vehicles and artillery and so forth, this is about the infantry. So the characters are the ones scraping alien fluid off their boots.
- I don't need a huge post out of people, but I find formatting, grammar/spellcheck important. This includes paying attention to capitalization, spaces between paragraphs and basic formatting for readability. I am not a douche, I make typos like anyone else, but I do make an effort and I want everyone else to do the same.
- In the interests of moving the story along, we need to agree to not get overly technical on the military aspect, particularly as the technology and tactics will change appreciably as the storyline progresses.
- Characters will be in a single squad of light infantry. Squad size to be determined by player interest, but we want to focus on the adventures of a single squad here.

I posted SFC Brian Park. I didn't change anything from the last time. But then I have three versions of this character saved. The original was for a Military themed RP on earth, the second was for this Foreign Legion RP and the third was for the Soviet Amerika RP.

For those interested, Squad Leaders in serving units are usually either Sergeant (USMC), Staff Sergeant (US Army) or Corporal (UK Army). They are not Sergeant First Class (USA), Gunnery Sergeant (USMC) or Staff Sergeant (UK Army). Also, you wouldn't want a Lieutenant, Captain or Major as a squad leader because their skill set and experience are vastly different. Could there be a Master Sergeant or Sergeant Major as a Squad leader in this scenario? Sure, but those guys are also getting up there in age. Although I did know a MSG who was 31 once. Rare to make rank that quick He then gave that up to go to OCS. He was then a 31 year old Second Lieutenant.

@Gunther So we are proceeding with this RP as a semi-1x1 for now, but are open to other people joining.

The way this works is that other characters can be introduced as replacements or members of other units attached to Park's squad or are otherwise able to link up in the course of combat. We'll keep it flexible.

That being said, we're doing a MOUT environment this time with a twist...on an orbital habitat, per discussion in Discord. It'll be some familiar methods mixed in with the massively unfamiliar.

I'll start a post up today.

Roger that. I made the point about the depth of the soil because infantry likes to dig in. If the soil is only deep enough for vegetation to grow, it won't be deep enough for armpit deep fighting positions or Hull defilade positions for a main battle tank or infantry fighting vehicle.

Excellent Read on the IC. I finally got to it this morning. It is the last day of school before the holiday break. We are having the students write letters to soldiers deployed to combat zones. I'll mail them to some soldier tomorrow.

Here is the organization:

1st Earth Motorized Infantry Brigade

Task Force "ROY" 1-1 IN motorized infantry battalion (hovercraft)
Task Force "MCCUSKER" 2-1 IN motorized infantry battalion (hovercraft)
Task Force "COX" 3-1 IN motorized infantry battalion (hovercraft)
Task Force "FITZGERALD" 1-10 AR armor battalion
Task Force "COLLINS" 2-10 AR armor battalion
2nd Bn, 3rd (2-3) field artillery battalion (24x155mm SP)
1st engineer battalion (hovercraft)
901st heavy aviation lift battalion (VTOL)
335th attack aviation battalion (UCAV)
145th forward support battalion
Team "WRANGLER" reconnaissance troop (hovercraft)
639th air defense artillery battery*
Team "NEWTON" military police company (Rear Security)
Team "DILLON" long range reconnaissance & surveillance detachment (LRRSD)
3rd Platoon, 405th Psychological Operations platoon

Is our squad in one of the infantry battalions listed above? or in the LRRSD?

Task Force COX. If only because we have Brits and Aussies in the units that would continually bring that up, including unit patches.

I feel like the Long Range Surveillance unit might be there, but battalions might be fielding their own assets of that nature, or are at least special operations capable.

I will do up a Brigade Task Organization and where they deploy their units on a battlefield. I'll say we are conducting a "Movement to Contact" which is a battle drill intended to do what it suggests, make contact with the enemy. I've given the FA Battalion four batteries instead of the usual three. This is 24 guns versus 18.

We might want to consider that a lot of the fire support is drone-based and VI-assisted. So a virtual intelligence is like a highly advanced Siri that can probably easily follow the sort of call for fire protocols that all of Centurion are able to do. The Grathik are assisting heavily in enhancing human systems for fire control, but are trying to keep humans in the driver seat with equipment built to suit them ergonomically and in terms of doctrine. They're programmed to understand tactical communications among humans and follow those directions.

Basically, drones providing direct fire support with missiles and some sort of heavy automatic weapons seem totally viable. Keeping the humans directing them safe and undetected also seems like a plus. The downside of drones is that they can be hacked, rendered inoperable with countermeasures and they can be destroyed in a number of different ways and that having organic units in charge helps ameliorate the concerns that come with fully automated but somewhat dumb drone support units or, worse, kill-units with sophisticated AI's that are not reliable in combat.

That all leaves it back to organic infantry who still have an advantage with drone support. But right now, their drones are in 'contested' space and aren't identifying the enemy very well. So it's back down to the eyes of infantry units, though they can designate targets for the drones in turn, I would say.

Yes sir! The 335th attack aviation battalion (UCAV) is a battalion of Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles that perform precisely in the manner you just detailed. Originally, I considered them as human controlled, but they can operate under AI parameters. They would still have either human or Grathik handlers insuring they are operating properly, correct?

The F-45 UCAV looks like this...

...Our F45 can have lasers mounted on it instead of projectile firing weapons as well as missiles and/or bombs. But I would still want indirect fire weapons like mortars and field artillery.

This TO includes the commander of each subordinate unit as well as which company level asset are assigned/attached to their unit for operational control. I've created battle groups that include both infantry and armor with combat engineer and artillery support. The ADA units will be spread throughout the brigade sector to provide a more wide reaching support. Included where each unit commander hails from.

I'm also talking about smaller drone units. There's a whole ecosystem out there with the nanotech included. While drones have automatic functions, they can be taken over by drone pilots on manual control. Some of them also convert to emplaced weapons that can be used manually or work on automatic protocols.

Awesome deal. I should do the same with tech, as there is definitely a lot to unpack with the potentials of augmented reality overlays that assist with aiming, communication and target acquisition. Integrating an aiming reticule to the display onto the visors of troops is an aim assist, but there are probably limitations to how well the tech works -- a trained rifleman aiming will still have an advantage here. Their optics probably are enhanced in this fashion as well.

I edited my post. I was being rushed out the door by the children, but wanted to post what I had. If you already read it, I changed it slightly; grammar and wording. I also added the NPCs in the Characters tab.

No prob, I slightly edited mine too -- I always do.

I wanted to cover the nanotech angle. When they start developing weapons/ammo that uses this tech, should be interesting.

Nice post, bud. I'll wait a day or so before I respond. I want to think more on this. I will probably have Team Bravo advance while this drone v. nanite fight is happening.

Finally getting back to this. The wife is expecting another storage shelf. I told her that was going to be put on hold today. I need to respond to some RPs.

She has a fierce honeydo list. I've got a bunch of shopping to do for a relative that caught e.coli, so go fig.

I hope to post here later today. My goal is to get a post into this and "The Combat Zone" with Liv and do a character up for Wild Hunt.

The Combat Zone is a modern crime drama where Liv and I play a pair of adult brother and sister, living in South Boston. The area formerly known as The Combat Zone (1950s to late 1970s) still exists and it is a den of crime with corruption in Boston PD. We also have a pair of BPD detectives investigating a murder the siblings created. I tried this idea some years ago on another site. It went to a bizarre psychological level that really weirded me out. I got into excruciating detail on how my character carved this woman during the process of murdering her.
