I always find it a challenge to be near my nieces and nephew. They're very well behaved, but I always wonder how my sister ignores their screaming at one another. Evidently it's a 'pick your battle' sort of thing.
I'm not overly fond of children outside my family.

You and I both then, as I am already highly selective but I do tolerate the "better" smaller people than the normal ones. Those who are willing to learn and listen, to retain what is taught or told, be quiet and settle if it is made clear and serious, so on it goes.

I'm a little different. I'm excellent with babies. Once they learn how to talk (or talk back) I suddenly have no idea what to do.

Heh, used to take every opportunity to avoid the nieces. Now I'm the one who constantly pokes around at the middle child to get her face unglued from her phone during family gatherings

I feel uncomfortable around human infants with how they transfix their gaze upon one's person and are so terribly fragile. Uncomfortable in the sense that I would much rather not handle them, no less because it is always somehow wrong; all too volatile especially with modern parenting.

I felt the same way until my nephew was born. The kid was kind of adorable as a baby. Now he's five and absolutely obnoxious

I can recall no time I saw a human infant I regarded as adorable in any sense. Cubs and kittens in contrast? I cannot help myself from finding them endearing.

Haaa. I'm the asshole to my oldest niece who called her out on all her fb lies.
Her: "We saw Catching Fire today! Loved it!"
me: "You've been home all day with us. You haven't seen it."

I really hope my unease around kids changes for me with my own. Everyone tells me it will be different. I just hope they're right XD

So I have heard it does change but like with you, there is no knowing until knowing. Personally, speaking only to knowing who and what I am as an individual and my particular, obscure perspective on the world, I am fairly confident it will because some amount of influence and control can be exerted. All the failings there will inevitably be by and large my own doing or the partner's, which shifts much of the weight to being a good patriarch for my role.

So far this year has been a jumble of drama I did not ask for. Almost threw my brother in law out of my house and then i pissed off my mom @.@

Eh. The brother in law thing is a semi-annual bitch fit on his part. That he just decided to throw in my house at 6am this time. (and wake me up in the process).
The mom thing was me standing my ground. No regrets there. But I expect some family member or another will make me feel bad about it, eventually.

Also I just learned today that my sister and her husband (he who won't be spoken of) are getting stationed here at DC. So like. I'm going to have family around. And not just family. The family with ALL THE KIDS.
