Savo Time to go to Hell

This rp seems to be a bit curious.

While I do have a couple of character idea in my head, namely more of an outcast kid trying to find himself and ignoring the reality of the world since he doesn't care too much about it, choosing to indulge in the more supernatural side of things, or at least investigate and adventure across the city. Sure, he would do decently in school, probably have a few hobbies, but I think there would be a general case of not belonging and mainly just trying to find himself as a kid growing up; might make him half-n-half when it comes to his heritage to make an even bigger divide as well. I need to work on meshing all of these ideas together, picking them out, seeing which fits, etc.

However, the power I have off the top of my head is a pretty easy one - pseudo-time stopping. Sounds overpowered, right? Except it really isn't.

It's easier to say that he "stops time," but its more like an out of body experience of sorts. He can't harm or change anything in stopped time, but only observe and watch, move around, etc. Once time starts to move again, he returns to the prior spot he was in... which can cause whiplash depending on how far he was from his original spot. He can't move items around, open doors, etc., but he'll be able to know where certain items are, observe how a certain person moves, and possibly react accordingly if someone is trying something malicious against him. Won't exactly be perfect since he has to rely on his own physical body to move, so yeah.

My pitch for an idea. Hopefully there's still room.

Edit: Or not... crivens, I took the hook a bit too late since I'm the sixth. Maybe I'll just keep an eye on this all, the premise sounds interesting enough after all.

I was thinking perhaps someone who could effect people in their dreams, an art student trapped by other expectations and desired from her that she craved escaping in her dreams. It only works if she’s had physical contact with them and can find them in the dreamscape, but the longer she used it and the longer she dream the more reality starts to fade and she has a harder time deciphering whether she’s awake or dreaming.

I can expand on that more if you want, it’s just a general concept.

@Savo I don't generally go by first come first served basis when it comes to my RPs, so don't worry about the count right now. If you're interested, toss something in. And I'm fine with having a pause button as a power, but what sort of desire would align itself with that? Pretty easy answer, but, you know, just checking to see if you were thinking of a power that's relevant to the character rather than just a power that sounds interesting.

@AardWolfIf she craved the ability to escape from reality, how does that align with this ability being something that would then be able to affect other people? Does she have a superhero complex mixed in as well, only it's crushed by a cynical, unfeeling reality? I'd imagine that simple escapism would probably manifest itself more as the ability to make herself dream lucidly and just do whatever the hell she wants, but that's just me.

@Burger
Known for her unfettered brashness, overconfidence, and aggression, Marina is known to be quick to anger

Are you okay? You know this isn't an essay you're writing, yeah? XD

Anyways, it all reads fine to me. Definitely have a lotta things I could do with it. Maybe the Collectors will really just be a boy band.

Hmm that’s fair I think I was trying to hard to work with a pitch I wasn’t fully intune with, actually if you don’t mind may I propose an alternative?

I’ve had more time to think about it and as an art student it would almost fit her better to see people’s colors, to be able to steal them to cover up the fact that she’s painted grey. She used to have color, or so she imagines but the stress of succeeding where her mother had failed, to break away from the toxic cycle of home that drains her of any bright emotion, the place that consumes her consciousness with its suffocating embrace of apathy and decay. Jealous of the bright patterns that seem to swirl and follow others she craves it, that true brightness instead of the happy plaster she tries to paint herself to towards others. So she steals their colors, their joys, sadness, anything to hide the black weeping into her skin. But it never last, fleeting, every time she steals someone’s color she paints them black making them give into their darker thoughts and inner emotions, the longer she wears the color the harder it is for her to change it, so she slowly becoming a muddy brown that’s seeping into her mind confusing her as to what she really feels.

@AardWolfYou can propose as many pitches as you'd like. I'm gonna be busy till the end of next week, so don't worry about rushing anything out. Anyways, the ability to take another's happiness or whatever certainly does sound fun. Might I suggest something along the lines of how she's always been able to see people's emotions colored over their bodies through a form of synesthesia? And what the Lostman provided to her is the ability to do the color-stealing thing.

Slight thing to consider though, if you REALLY wanna go hard with color metaphors. If you remove colors from something, eventually, I think you'll get white, not black, cause white is (as far as I know) the absence of all color.

White and black are both the absence of all color.

Additive, like mixing pigments, white is the absence of color. Mix enough pigment together, you'd eventually get black.
Subtractive, like mixing lights, black is the absence of colored light. Mix enough light together, you'd eventually get white.

So black is the absorption of all color, white is the reflection of all color.

god, why the fuck is color so fuckin weird

This is right by my understanding, but it is a bit misleading imo: Green is green because it reflects green light, and absorbs the rest of the spectrum. As you've explained it, we could consider a green leaf to be the absence of green because the light is reflected or not green as you defined white. It can technically be considered correct but then what color is it?

On an off topic, has anyone ever wondered why plants evolved to reflect green light? By my understanding green light is more energetic than red or blue (when speaking of the sun, at least) one would think plants that absorb said energy for photosynthesis rather than reflect it, would be the dominant plant strain in terms of photosynthesis.

Did I mention I'd like to voice my interest?

Ohhh I do like synesthesia, but I was more so gearing black as in showing the ugly side of people they hide. Her way of stripping them down to draw attention away from her own lack of color to hide behind, I.e. if she steals coor from a man who is try to enjoy a day out with his family but secretly wants to just drink and scream at them to shut up because he’s over stressed from his office job he would be more inclined to act on that without a second thought because the colors are missing there’s nothing to act as a buffer or hide that desire. But I can keep trying to flesh it out, I’ll write up a ca and see if maybe explaining the character I have in mind more would make it easier to understand.

I was thinking of her mainly using it selfishly as a form of camouflage, she doesn’t want anyone to notice she’s different or not the same so she cares little about how it might effect others as long as she perceives herself to be safe.

Thanks! In any case, I was thinking of both relevancy and how interesting a power is when coming up with this power, but I digress.

To easily explain why it fits, running away from/ignoring reality (somewhat) and subsequently trying to find himself in the process, not belonging while trying to find a place where you belong, being a bit of a tryhard, etc. Basically a bit of in outcast with little to no friends, which probably doesn't help much due to having a bit of a foreign heritage and impressions. Also, may or may not have a tendency to explore this city as a part of the running away portion and such, as well as trying to dive into/having a peculiar curiosity about what lies beyond the depths of this city. Weird shit happens and no one bats an eye? It gives him myriads of things to do.

So yeah, he's gonna be a bit on the sliding scale of immature to mature, but how pseudo-timestop plays into this all is sort of easy to define. When he "stops" time, he's basically in his own little bubble, his own little world. He can go around the place, exploring as much as he does with this power but can't affect the world with it since its his stopped time. However, he eventually will have to return to reality, as he can't roam here forever. Along with that, not belonging while trying to belong, stopped time allows him to be himself without exactly attempting to be this edgy teenage kid; he feels he doesn't belong much around certain areas in this world, yet when everything stops, he can finally belong, with no one to judge what he does, thinks, or says. Finally, the tryhard part; stopping time can give him some hindsight in identifying things, which will allow him to show off once he crafts a plan on how to react during his stopped time since he usually rubber-bands back to the position he was originally in once time resumes.

That's why I went with this power; equal parts relevant while being equal parts neat in my opinion. Hopefully it clears things up or is a bit fitting; if not, then I'm willing to try and take some recommendations on how to improve this.

As you've explained it, we could consider a green leaf to be the absence of green because the light is reflected or not green as you defined white. This is just semantics. I use the term absence in the same context as absorption. The visible absence of a color = to the color being absorbed. That means that a green leaf isn't the absence of green because it's being reflected instead of not being absorbed. This might be the confusion between additive and subtractive. Subtractive is used for things that don't add together. IE, if you mix red and blue paint, you get purple paint. It doesn't become brighter because the same light is being reflected, just at a different combined wavelength. If you mix red and blue light together, it becomes a bright magenta because more light is being reflected.

Green light isn't the most energetic. Red has the lowest wavelength, violet has the highest. That means that violet is the most energetic color. Chlorophyll a absorbs primarily red and violet while Chlorophyll b absorbs primarily blue and orange. This means that there's a pretty big gap from teal to yellow where light isn't really absorbed. Why did it evolve for this?

It just did. Evolution doesn't imply the best solution. It's only the one that works and becomes dominant.

I'm getting the feeling our argument is more rooted in a scientific (physics of light) vs artistic (color theory) viewpoint so I'll leave it alone. We can both be considered to be correct. In the use of paints and dyes etc, yes you will achieve a black color through combination, but on the subject of light, black is the absence of color while white is the presence of all color (or absorption vs reflection) I simply was hoping to help AardWolf wih her character idea.

Regarding the green plants, I'll have to see about finding the article I read years ago, but there was some study making the claim that the planet used to be purple rather than green, the explanation included the energetic component of RGB light, and stated the majority of usable energy for photosynthesis was in the green spectrum of light - yes violet aka ultraviolet is the highest energetic spectrum of light but it also damages DNA. Which would be another evolutionary benefit to purple leaves come to think of it.

And finally on the subject of evolution, no, it does not imply the best solution, simply the one that wasnt an evolutionary dead end. One would think though, that if plants did have purple leaves, they would be more dominant than green plants, leading one to wonder why they all died out. Assuming this article I read was correct. Again, I'll see about finding it. I'll pm you it if you'd like (If I can find it) but we should probably avoid derailing this thread further.

This roleplay sounds really interesting, I apologise if it's getting too crowded now, since I think there are already 6(?) or so people who have also expressed an interest in this game.

I really like the cyberpunk feel of the world and everything, and I was thinking of making a character who hung out with the other dredges of society, punks, in short. I'm thinking along the lines of the movie AKIRA, with groups of biker gangs that would race down the streets of Tenoroshi. My character used to belong to a local biker gang but never especially felt like he fit in with the rest of the crew. He felt disconnected- but never could think of a way to leave or turn away from the life of violence he had entered without feeling the retribution from his former "friends".

This would launch him into a narrative of trying to untangle himself from this life of crime and trying to really figure out who he was and where his life is going. Since he feels like the foundations of what his life was built on are now giving away, he starts searching for something else to grab onto, something that could pull him out of this blackhole of delinquency and corruption. This would lead up to him finding "the lostman" - the only part I'm stuck on is what sort of power he would gain.

I don't do a lot of sci-fi/fantasy roleplays, and I'm a little unsure of what sorts of powers the characters in this setting would have. It seems like the powers this story favors are more passive, but insightful abilities that tamper with reality. If what I'm thinking is correct, that's really cool and I definitely like those powers better than the typical "superhero" powers. I'm still trying to come up what sort of power would fit/be appropriate for my character, and whether it would change him or center on manipulating the world. If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them.

Oh, and if there's anything you could give me about world building or anything I need to change about the premise of my character, feel free to let me know. I'm not familiar with the anime you listed, so there's a good chance that I could have gotten something wrong, haha.

EDIT: I was thinking more about what kind of power my character could have and I thought maybe some sort of nondetection power that obscures his presence? It's not exactly like invisibility because it would be more of a mental trait where if he concentrates, he can "jam" someone's brain from processing where he is. So he could be standing near someone and they wouldn't notice that he's there because he's augmenting their perception of him, if that makes any sense. He also wouldn't be able to affect large groups of people with this ability, since it's a concentration thing on his part. Sufficiently willed people have a chance of seeing through his ability and noticing him as well.

@AardWolfSure. CS doesn't actually have a portion dedicated to the function of superpowers though, so you'll still have to discuss the specifics with me. Does she only scrape away one's 'outer colors' then? And if it happens to be that they're black on the inside, they'll lash out and be angry? What's the case if someone is genuinely happy?

@HeadlessIf you wanna voice your interest, don't debate color physics and pitch me a character idea instead. ;3

@SavoSounds fine with me.

@CanidaeIt's the person who decides whether they want to change themselves or change the world, but I'd say that yours leans more towards wanting to change yourself. The only thing that you've missed the mark on is that it's less cyberpunk-aesthetic and just weird. Biker gang character is a-ok with me though. An ability to sever another's perception of you is fine with me. Just figure out a nice image to go along with it.

To give people a clearer idea of how powers pan out, I'll list current power ideas, as well as pluck some nonexistent ones to serve as an example.

Burger's thing: Change yourself and become a Frankenstein-esque monster that takes limbs from others to replace their own.
AardWolf's thing: Change yourself and 'steal' the emotions of others by sucking out their 'colors'.
Savo's thing: Change the world and create a snapshot of the world around him.
Canidae's thing: Change yourself and jam the perceptions of others, effectively gaining invisibility.

Change the world, and perceive the hearts of human beings as imperfect roses, with the imperfections symbolizing something that these humans lack. Through that, one can damage or mend a heart by interacting with the roses they see.
Change yourself, and gain a split personality that serves as an automatic defense system when you or the people around you are in trouble.
Change the world, and see human connections as a mass of strings. By weaving strings together, can turn individuals into a collective.
Change yourself, and perceive the greatest 'emotional weakness' of a human as an illusion around them. When you kill them, you gain pleasure proportionate to how fearful they are at the time of their demise.
Change the world, and perceive the shadows cast by living beings as reflective of their sins. With that, you can offer absolution or retribution, giving life to their shadows.
Change yourself, and SET YOUR HAND ABLAZE WITH AN UNQUENCHABLE FLAME AS THE DEVIL DRAGON SEALED IN YOUR LEFT EYE HOWLS UPON THE ADVENT OF THE DEMON LORD'S BANQUET.

In general, it's easier to gain offensive powers through a desire to 'change yourself', because there's a hell lot of people who'd just wish they were better/stronger/could protect their loved ones/etc. These sorts of wishes would manifest themselves in gaining superhuman physical attributes, more or less. Gaining a naturally offensive power through a desire to change the world though, is more indicative that you'd rather destroy the world than change/fix it.

I figured, but it gives me a chance to flesh her out more as well. So I’ll do one later tonight when I get off work. It’s almost as if people paint themselves happy to hide themselves, so yes she only takes the outer colors people hide with so if someone’s painted over to hide their true colors then they’re liable to act out on what it is they’re hiding. She really doesn’t stick around or care enough to find out what her consequences are as long as she gains something from it. So if someone’s happy, truly they wouldn’t need to be painted colors, so perhaps they appear white? Which means she has no interest in them.

Just throwing in to say I'm still potentially interested in this; I've just been busy so haven't had much time to really develop a character/power set properly. I've got a couple of ideas, but can't really think of the 'why'.

I'd still be interested in having a death seer type of character, but, why someone would want that power I'm less sure of. Also how much influence would the character have on this? Would they be able to effect the time of death, or the outcome somehow?

Otherwise, some brief, half-realised concepts; the ability to literally see the demons that haunt people (the loss of someone you love, that bad thing you did years ago, etc.,), the idea that someone's thoughts are tattooed on their skin (so even if a person acts kind and friendly, if their inner dialogue is callous it will be seen) or... There was something to do with moths, but I can't really remember it now; I think it was something like a moth representing a person, following them around, and you can suggest things to the moth to change someone's mind, or crush it and the person dies, etc.

But, with all of them, as I said, less sure of a 'why' other than morbid curiosity, which isn't enough for this roleplay.

@AardWolfOh, I see where you're going now. I'd say that if they're genuine about their current emotion, they'd still be painted in the relevant color, but she simply won't be able to interact with that color the way she can do so for more duplicitous individuals. So she doesn't get rekt when she walks into a room and everyone just happens to be wearing their heart on their sleeves.

@MaliceIn regards to affecting the deaths of others as a seer, I'd imagine that one could do so simply by, I dunno, stabbing them to accelerate their death or trying to save them right as their death approaches? One possible desire that could lead to seeing when people would die would be something like...your family has always had some shitty genetic disease or whatever, that no doctors can explain and that pops up suddenly and randomly. When you were a child, one of your parents died suddenly, and you feel super bad because you never even got a chance to say any last words due to the suddenness of their demise. Though you understood the inevitability of death, what you want is closure, the ability to ensure that you'd be at a beloved's deathbed before they expire. And thus, bleh blah blooh, you can now grasp when people die.

And yeah, the 'why' is probably pretty hard to figure out, but there's also no real reason for you to come into this with a 'why' already formulated. Some desires can come from events that occur within the IC, after all, and I sorta didn't actually expect everyone would want to head into the RP with a character that's already superpowered. You could just straight up make a character that has some reason for looking into the underside of Tenoroshi, and then, throughout the IC, have them sharpen their nebulous wants into something concrete enough for the Lostman to make something out of.
