I put a ramekin full of ketchup with a toothpick sticking up out of it in the freezer. Now 5 hours later I'm enjoying a delicious ketchup-flavored popsickle!

I have over 200 games on Steam. (Easy when they're so cheap. Been my present exchange to my brother and roommate for many years at least.) But I don't even play any of them. Not even really much of a gamer anymore and every time I try to game (at least on my) something seems to stop me. This round was I was unable to get the modding to work and it was obnoxious. #Firstworldproblems

And once someone hacked my Steam account and stole my games from me. (Added like 25 usernames to my account, that I haven't figured out how to remove.) But I did get it back pretty quickly after I complained about it. (If I remember correctly.) But that was fun.

I enjoy onion rings. I will eat raw onions on salads and on hamburgers. Raw onions alone on nothing does not interest me at all. I have realized that my taste buds have matured over time. When I was a youth, I hated turnip. My mom would prepare a dish of mashed turnip, similar to mashed potatoes every year for Thanksgiving. My father would not let me leave the table until I ate it. I find now, that I actually enjoy turnip. The wife put turnip chunks in her Chicken soup along with potato chunks. It was utterly delicious.

I can sort of relate.
I hated yellow mustard as a kid, and now I love it on my sharp cheddar and my pretzels.
and I used to love peanut butter and jelly and now I don't really care for those sandwiches.

My relationship with food is less one about pleasure or taste, rather more of a matter of purpose. Not only am I carnivorous, I am ravenously so to the point it becomes obsession, as the longest I had gone without fresh meat in any meal was three days. By the morning of the fourth day, it was all my mind had become fixated upon. Everything else had become secondary and the only desire was to acquire the desired food, in this case a chicken. I recall clearly that I hadn't much register of other conversations or objectives, between being sleep deprived and delirious plus hungering.

The work an officer does is not seen by the enlisted. I know that, having served on both sides of that coin. When we were in the field, I never got enough sleep. I had a battalion commander once who required only four hours of sleep. I was so envious of that man. He would go to sleep at 12:30AM and be up around 4:30. His driver hated life.

I recall one time leaving the company CP following an operations order brief around 12:30 AM. I went back to my platoon CP and my PSG. we took turns sleeping and listening to the radio because we had no RTO. I must have had an hour and a half sleep that night because some assholes came and attacked us at zero dark thirty. It sucked.

No, I didn't always get my 7 or 8 hours sleep.


I don't envy you in that aspect. One of my longest shifts while enlisted lasted roughly 19 hours, and although I was armed the entire shift, I was able to go to standby mode for some of those hours and rest, although I obviously wasn't allowed to sleep. Also, my following command had us come into work at 4 am for every shift. I was a zombie for six months and half dead inside.

But to turn that around, I turned 32 this past week and I was beyond flattered when the bartender checked to make sure I had a wristband before pouring a shot down my throat. The days they stop checking my ID and such will be a rather depressing time for me

They stopped checking my ID a long time ago. In fact, I believe I left Active Duty before you were born. :(

My identification for alcohol has never been requested. Yes, I do appear that out of my age. While I do not partake, no alarm or concern has ever been raised where present when that was the expectation to so much as be in proximity. This is both ideal and non-ideal for all the reasons one would imagine.

You know what, despite what I say I enjoy adulthood. I wouldn't want to be a kid these days as almost every stupid thing they do is publicized on social media and all, and that's no way to live.

I also would've loved living in the 80s, not as a toddler, and then stop time in the 90s, my favorite decade.
