“Glorious Sigmar You have promised that when we dwell in the secret place of the most High and shelter under the shadow of Your wings you will guard and guide us, protect us and keep us - for You are our refuge and our fortress and You alone are the one in Whom we place our trust.”

Witch Hunters are grim, cold individuals who have dedicated their life to the eradication of corruption wherever it may be. Most witch hunters are the state-issued Templars of the Cult of Sigmar. However, there are a wide variety of others, from the Colleges' Magisters Vigilant to local mercenaries hired out to a nobleman's service. What they all have in common however is their dedication and zeal against all things tainted and unpure.[1a][4a]

Since the practice of any witchery outside of the auspices of the Colleges of Magic is deemed an abomination within the Empire, death by burning is the proscribed punishment for this particular crime - and the witch hunters are far from squeamish about meting it out. In recent times, woodcutters and witch hunters are kept busy as more and more people reportedly turn to the dark arts. All ordinary citizens agree witch hunters are necessary and the work they do is crucial to the safety of the Old World, but there are very few who do not feel a flush of fear when they see a figure wearing the familiar wide-brimmed hat, buckled tunic, and long black cloak.

Greetings, one and all once more.

After much deliberation, again, and with plenty of time on my hands, I have decided to go with another RP. This time set in the more fantastical cousin of the 40K universe, yet still based inside Games Workshops chronologically confused but nonetheless quite entertaining lore. If you do not know this 'version' of the franchise so well, or if you have any questions, please feel free to send me a PM or ask in this thread.

Extra Bits'N'Pieces/The Plan

While I could easily have gone for a Chaos Invasion scenario, or that of just the Empire or what-not, I much prefer having a varied and potentially highly interesting group around. In my opinion this just makes for a much better and more entertaining RP overall.

Therefore I have chosen an RP based the retinue of the Witch Hunter Helmut Van Graff - a group of highly motivated and possibly specialised warrior men and women from across the breadth of the Old World (and possibly new), in the employ of a fanatical tracker of the enemies of the Sigmarite faith and just 'good' in general.

If you as a reader are familiar with such works as the Witcher novels (or indeed know of any historical witch hunts) then you may know a little of what to expect; essentially a group of misfits slammed together in their shared lust for gold, adventure and getting into other peoples messes with the eventual goal of exterminating a dark adversary/monster.

While there shall be plenty of action, there will also be intrigue, politics, religion and all the 'grim darkness' that the 40K version is known for...just in a more fantasy-based setting.

Interested? Then come aboard!

The Setting

Ubersreik is one of the most important trade centers in Reikland. It sits astride and important bridge on the road from from Bögenhafen to Dunkelburg. Trade flows along the road as well as downriver to Auerswald, Grünburg, Kemperbad, and Altdorf. In addition, because it is located near Grey Lady Pass, Ubersreik is the ideal location for merchants travelling over the Grey Mountains to move their wares from the river to overland transportation, and vice versa.

From Ubersreik anything is possible! One could travel to the steaming jungles of Lustria, to the frozen northern wastes, over the mountains into Bretonnia or into the civilised lands of the Empire.

Here is where it shall all begin...but where it will all end is another matter entirely.

Usually I would be adverse to a gyrocopter, but you know what? I'm hoping this will be more of a casual thing, and there's always a use for a scout etc, so feel free to go for it.

Just remember - we could well be going to some place(s) where you can't take it etc, but en general it's all gravy.

Hallo, hallo, nice to see you all here; I was considering altering this somewhat - from a mercenery based roleplay to one based around an Imperial witchhunter (love the Puritan inspired outfit) and his band of merry men. It would be more 'close' and 'mature' - think The Witcher in a WHF setting, classic horror, and the like.

If that sounds like something you'd still be interested in, pleae say so, or not if that's how you feel.

@Jbcool I like the idea, seems it has the potential to last kike your SoB RP. I think I would probably change my character then though, since I think an engineer on a chopper would be awfully awkward.

Hmmm... I get a *fun* mental image of a disinherited foppish Marienburger with an unhealthy fascination for the occult throwing his lot with a mercenary band to sustain his unhealthy appetites for pleasure and adventure. That sound like a slice of fried gold?

@Jbcool I once created a former cavalryman for another Warhammer RP. Perhaps I can expand him a bit and use him as a mercenary.

Right, gonna do a little edit on this RP, the ideas sound good though! Give me a day or so, though if you have ideas for a Witch hunters retinue/guard etc you can send it to me or discuss it here.

May get a discord up too.

@Jbcool are you looking for more high level stuff like maybe a former Greatswordsman rocking full plate zweihander with arming Sword and pistol for side arm or more low power like say some random well built young farmer preferring to fight rather than keep with the pitchfork and took grand-dad's old halberd off the mantelpiece as he sets off to look for work.

Grand, @Jbcool. Look's like we've built up a nice foundation for the campaign. Only thing that leaves me a little concerned is how it would work to use Discord for the RP, since some of us might live in very different time zones. I'd suggest that we either play by post, or share our GTM time zones and plan Discord sessions ahead in time.

@Andreyich Middling level would be fine - you just need to think of who would join a Witch hunter; the destitute and desperate, the religiously fanatical/zealous, the foolhardy but also those who know their own worth.

Saying that, we'll be starting with low-level things and 'levelling up' so-to-speak, fighting back a Beastman raid here, maybe murdering a Chaos cult there...we'll work up to hunting down Vampires, eventually.

@BiffleChump Ah, I meant using Discord as a means of communication, not where we'll be doing the RP. That's here. :)

RIGHT! 'Update' coming tomorrow, then I'd like Character Sheets ASAP so we can get started. If you do need more time though, I can probably accommodate you.

All right. Which edition of WHRP do we play with? I'm most accustomed to the rules of 2E.

The two character concepts that I've been weighing between are the foppish Marienburger with unwholesome hobbies or an overenthusiastic priest (or maybe even a pit fighter) to whom the concept of an "indoor voice" is an alien notion. Hamtastic to the max, "JUSTICE!" and all that.

The latter might be more appropriate to a Witch hunter's crew, though a morbid fop could make for an entertaining clash of philosophies.

Additional note: Will send the character in on the evening of the 18th. Am currently writing his equipment, description, and backstory. His Characteristics, career, and weaponry have been decided.

None, this is a post-by-post text-based RP section - there are no 'rules'; that sort of thing can be found here: roleplayerguild.com/forums/39-tableto…

If you're still up for RPing here, then either of those characters sounds good to me.

Okie dokie, I've edited everything and all is done; if you're still about and with me, then please feel free to get your CS to me at any time.

We'll begin at Ubersreik but, as it says in the OP, from there we could potentially go just about anywhere - expect grittiness, 'realism', and an RP that I hope will last for a while at least.

If anyone else wishes to join who had not already posted, then please send me a CS and we'll see about it.

@Jbcool So originally I was thinking of an Iron breaker that left home because he didn't want to take the Slayer oath for. Crime he didn't commit. Since you've sort of ruled that out I was thinking either of a city Dwarf slayer, a Ranger, or a Sigmarite Middeblander noblemen, family driven from home by a minor peasant's revolt that as Ulrichans saw them as targets (think of a dismounted pistolier I guess).

Why would the Ironbreaker be ruled out? A Witch hunter could use him as well as anyone else. Honestly any of the above would be fine, which isn't much help, but is the truth.
