In these stories there’s rarely any build up to the dragon’s appearances. They usually go along the lines of “We were just minding own own business adventuring when suddenly a dragon came out and started breathing fire at us”. There’s also a lot of inconsistency about their coloration to breath attacks; a lot of them describe the dragon’s as “black as night” but shooting flames from their mouths. A few stories you have heard of them breathing out clouds of darkness, and at least one story did get the color and breath weapon right with a dragon who’s scales were “the color of fresh blood” and fire breathing. All of these dragon’s were fire breathing.
And none of the stories mention where they get attacked by dragon’s either. Some mention while traveling the mountains, others mention forests getting burned down by dragon fire, others mention the dragon’s bursting out the walls of a dungeon. No names since all of these dragon’s have appeared randomly, so no one really knows who they are and none have managed to speak to them and live to tell the tale.
How you interpret this information I’ll leave up to you. I’m merely explain what you might know, by necessarily what is true.
