Welcome to everyone gathered thus far. Please take a moment to read over the zero post on this OOC in order to create your character and to get a feel for some general info and the roll system, which I assure you is less intimidating than it seems.

Please take a moment to look at my character Y'Vanna to see the preferred format.

The Premise



Human characters only please. Some magic is acceptable (low to mid-fantasy). I can answer questions as to where the line is... I would like for the environment to be both gritty, and filled with sharp wit and should make for a fun read as well. The idea is that somewhere in the very beginning of the story they are either all caught and brought together in front of the ruling establishment or are summoned from a guild, who are then sent on a perilous, and lucrative journey. Along the way they will either get their shit together, or they'll fall short in epic failures.

Chat as much as you'd like in OOC and ask any questions about rolls or anything of that nature and we will sort it all out here. Please do not be afraid to ask, you are in no way going to get on my nerves by doing so. I look forward to seeing what you all come up with.

There is also a Zero post on the IC thread for quick reference to rolls and other information like maps, goods, etc, and also another one in the Character board for NPC's, antagonists, and other key characters as well. I will be constantly adding/updating these lists with new information, items, places and the like.

I would also like to add that the plot is going to be largely left open, and will be generally motivated and steered by the group as a whole. As GM I will guide us into the beginning but where it goes and what it becomes will be largely up to our motley lot. There will be times where crossing over a bit of backstories will be available if someone should want to collaborate that in at some point. It will be entirely up to everyone. Again as GM, I will queue certain possibilities or avenues when needed, but this will be as open world as possible as to create endless possibilities.

Hey there, this seems like something that would potentially interest me. I was just wondering if it would it be possible to play a very social play heavy character, with few combat skills? Someone more along the lines of a conman than a traditional thief/rogue archetype...

@Kassarock You most certainly could. All of these characters are meant to be underdogs, underachievers, that sort of lot. You could play a commoner who hardly knows anything of fighting or stealing, or is perhaps just terrible at both. The premise does revolve around a group of thieves, or petty criminals, so you would to figure out some sort of way to be incorporated in with the group. At some point in the near beginnings everyone will be thrust into a group by some means, most likely incarceration for some sort of petty or high crime.. at which point the group will become established and will embark from there.

@Finris No worries. Everyone seems to be a bit busy at the moment, and I am still adding information. I added a few NPC's and I am now going through adding some places of interest and things like that so take your time. I'd much prefer well thought out characters over hastened ones.

I am going to make the roll system optional, for those who would like to use the system to augment your posting please do so, and if not you certainly don't have to. It was meant as a basis upon which to help keep your character's actions honest and less than heroic. These characters are meant to be less than epic in their feats, and I set up the system to help keep them honest. This should make things easier on everyone. I will leave the system up for referencing, just in case you need to know how difficult certain tasks would be given your current statuses and effects.

@Arkitekt I'm actually really up for the rolling system, I've been on a break from RPG for the last year and half or so and that's partly because I got into tabletop and was investing my creative efforts there instead. Unfortunately my job means I move around a lot right now so maintaining a regular table group has been hard, so to the fill the void I came back here.

@Kassarock well I am leaving it up so you may certainly use it. I plan to for my own character as well. I have an opinion that writing whatever post up I'd like to is unfair to the character. It helps to keep them honest with their flaws, and the nature of things such as flintlocks, etc. But I will make it entirely optional. At any rate it is, and always was, only to be a sort of guideline for posting, and in no way needs to be concrete, it may be altered or tweaked a bit by each player, and only given to add thought to random possible outcomes, which often seems limited to me in a sense when playing by post, if that makes sense. I am looking for more spontaneity I guess..

Completely optional.

I've added a few more places of interest on the zero post of the IC board, and still adding a few NPC's to the zero post on the character's board as well.

There will be several NPC's that you can use as a bit of origin or siding faction for your character, which you may be acquainted with or find or have employment with. The two I have thus far are Lord Vargas, a fence and black market merchant and small time syndicate leader of sorts, who operates out of the Faded Lantern Tavern, and Madame Margarette Fontaine, A brothel owner, fence, and organized crime ringleader who is in a semi-competition with Lord Vargas and his small enterprise.

They are both small fish compared to the Black Hands, which is another group that will be off limits to characters, and non playable as an origin or backstory option.

You do not have utilize these NPC's as an origin or alignment, I am merely adding them if you should so choose to add them to your circle for a bit more girth into the character creation phase. You would not have to belong to either group to do business with them, though they are competing vendors/groups, but belonging to one or the could potentially open or close doors down the way.

@Kassarock Very well done. I love this guy already. I could definitely see him doing a lot of business with Vargas, and could perhaps have some sort of forgery scheme going on between the two of them and the Black Lion Trading Co. that could provide to be somewhat lucrative to both parties involved, so long as though you kept it sparse so that it would go unnoticed by the books. That would give you almost endless ways to procure small amounts of loot, and would at least afford you a spot at the Faded Lantern as one of Vargas' cohorts. Of course this is just a suggestion, and you don't have to use any of that if you don't want to.

The only thing I would possibly change is if you could make the picture size a bit smaller, or crop to portrait size like my character Y'Vanna as I like them left out of the hiders so that the faces of the players are there, along with their current money status and ammo.. Other than that feel free to move him over to the characters list, and you can begin posting whenever you like. Take your time with your own agenda, as all of the players will eventually cross paths and form a group, but this does not in any way need to be rushed, and collaboration between players is encouraged.

Fantastic job.

As for your starting cash ( since you said you liked the roll system) just hit a d100 to determine your current currency.

UPDATE:

I've added a set of Campaign dice that can be accessed on the ZERO POST on the IC board for those of you interested in utilizing rolls. Rolls have been made entirely optional and you may choose to use them or not, as often or as sparsely as you see fit. @Kassarock I know you said that you were rather interested in the system so this should give you some ease of access.

@Jarl Coolgruuf Splendid. Feel free to make a character for submission when you have the time. There's a small bit of information in the zero post on this OOC thread about how to set up your character and skill point allotment. If you do not wish to use the roll system you do not have to, but the skillset bit will definitely be used during character creation. Please submit in a hider in this thread (OOC) before moving them to the character roster.

@ArkitektThis looks cool. I like the idea of using the dice to help make our characters a bit more bumbling, but I do have a question about success rolls. Let's say we're trying to pick a lock. It passes with 2 successes on a 3d2, someone opens the door and knocks us out with 0 successes, but would it succeed with just one success? Maybe with a complication, like it's noisier than intended, or the pick breaks?

@Atrophy that's exactly the sort of thing I had in mind when I created the system. You don't have to be so in depth about things or stick to it entirely, and you may use it at your discretion, at whatever intensity you like. If it seems a bit harsh, whatever the outcome, just dial it back to whatever you think would be suitable.

As these characters aren't exactly of the lustering brand, I wanted to make sure that it was not forced into a post, but rather guided a bit more blindly, or haphazard. I just feel like sometimes its easy to write a character who just breezes through everything, and I wanted a more whimsical but still gritty adventure. If that makes sense (I may actually be crazy..).
