Trace Retloth
Merchant Row

Trace heard the bandit archer die and swung his spear sharply to reduce the amount of bandit blood on the blade. The immediate area had become more dangerous with spreading fires and more bandits likely to arrive any minute. But, his mind was preoccupied with the person that he was staring at currently.

Artimesia... the Dark Mage... with whom he had spent the afternoon. It wasn't a terribly enjoyable afternoon, but he had experienced far worse. He had suspicions about why she was seeking a sick person, but even a casual examination revealed those thought and feelings to be based almost exclusively on stories he was told as a child. There was probably truth to those stories. But, he had learned that few things are really as black and white as they seem.

He took a look back at the guardsman's stunned face. That guy was loyal to the boss/Prince... whatever... Leaving him behind wouldn't look good unless he was taking his wounded self to the Castle. But, Trace had a strong feeling that his employer was probably in the thick of the worst combat zone right now. He had seemed that type.

Dead men pay poorly.

"Artemisia." He said, closing the distance between them while they were still out of the guardsman's hearing. "Here." He took out his vulnerary and offered it to her. "I need to keep my employer alive and paying. You should go to the castle with that guard. He's wounded but better than nothing. Use this on him if you need to help him move faster."

His tone was as simple as ever, but it felt out of place now... as though that flat mundane voice was a cloak that kept the truth in shadow. His eyes were a different story. Even shaded by the edge of his helmet, they shone with a raging mix of emotions. But, the strongest one wasn't fear. It was something else, perhaps... respect.

There wasn't much time to talk in the midst of an attack and evacuation. As much as he wanted to have a more substantial conversation with her, there really wasn't time and this wasn't the place. So, whether she accepted the vulnerary or not, he said, "I'd like to talk more... In a quieter place."

Artemisia

Merchant Row, Garleton

They were never ready. One Flux did the job, eliminating the thug on the spot. For a brief moment Artemisia bore a dry smile, but it vanished as she breathed a sigh of relief and relaxed, straightening up. Behind her, Trace dispensed with the other marauder. The whole fight lasted mere seconds, and by all accounts it seemed a decisive success. “Should have known better,” she muttered in memoriam before turning away. War would engulf this town in no time, so little effort could be spared for the dead.

Instead, she focused on the guardsman, wholly impressed by the others' efforts. “Not bad. Had my father warriors like you, ours would already be a household name.”

Artemisia gave him a confused look. “What?” Before she could get any closer, Trace accosted her, telling her to do what she'd already planned on. He offered her a vulnerary, at which point she opened her mouth to say 'I've already got one' before realizing that he meant it for the guard. “Uh, okay,” she replied instead. She moved away to offer the guardsman her shoulder to help him back into the thinning crowd bound for the castle. He resumed speaking, but Artemisia cut him off, knowing that could come later. “Let's just get out of here, mister.” She offered him the vulnerary given by Trace, and he accepted the medicine gladly. The two couldn't dally long given the spreading fire, and the dark mage doubted the city's attackers would stop at just one Resonant Flames.

Before pulling away, however, the Artemisia cast another look at her other new acquaintance, that obliging but lead-tongued spearman. His voice contained no inflection, but his face bore an offputting expression. She knew he knew about her vocation now. True, she didn't exactly bother keeping it a secret when the situation called for violence, but dark mages typically kept their status secret for a reason. What did he intend to do, she wondered. When he did speak, he voiced a desire to meet and talk with her again. Artemisia really didn't think she wanted to, since he didn't have much else to offer her, but what she said was, “I guess,” before disappearing into the flow of people heading to safety.

Kyran Cynmaer

Garleton, En Route to Stables

Well this is certainly a change of pace. thought the young squire of Reynes as he dashed through the now blazing streets of a once bustling and lively Garleton. Mere moments ago a myriad of mercenaries, merchants and other travelers filled the streets near to bursting. Yet now it seemed that the sole inhabitant of this castle town would soon be the ever-growing inferno threatening to consume all within it. People all around him were running and screaming, with varying degrees of hysteria alongside. Kyran couldn't
blame them, Nobody had expected this, not the imperial scouts, nor the other knights of Reynes had any clue that an attack, let alone one of this magnitude was imminent. All he truly knew was that of his orders, directly given to him by the Brigadier General: To lead the Imperial Prince Alnard and his men safely back behind the Reynes border. The task sounded simple enough, yet truly daunting in it's importance and potential for hangups, though there was one rather major hitch. By the time that the General finished informing Kyran of his duty the Princeling had already up and left the castle. Through some quick inquiry he managed to gather that his charge had decided to spearhead the evacuation himself, and though his cause was brave and valiant, these circumstances made the squire's job yet harder. So now he dodged and weaved through abandoned stalls and the hysterical horde of evacuees trying to swarm their way to the castle as he searched a blazing castle town for a certain lordling.

To say he had his work cut out for him would be an understatement, and a grave one at that.

Firstly he would head in the direction of the stables, if he needed to search a good part of the city he could do so immensely faster on horseback, and Lei would more than deliver in terms of raw speed. As he sprinted Kyran overheard the sounds of battle, all around him blades clashed and telling dull thuds of the defeated finding their final rests. Guilt rose up within him, he should be helping these people! Though at the same time he couldn't afford to stop, he had a job to do and he needed to move hastily, from what he gathered the prince and him were much alike in the way that they oft bit off more than they could chew. If he took too long he risked the well being of the Prince, and potentially...

No. Now is hardly the time for that. I have this under control. It's just a simple task. Get Lei, Find the Prince, Get the hell out of here. Find the Prince, Get the hell out of here.... The squire internally repeated to himself as he approached the stables, the building being thankfully untouched by the growing inferno for the moment. Entering the building the horses within were seemingly either undaunted by or unaware of the growing carnage outside.... save for one, thrashing at it's binds like the wild animal it could have once been. In stark opposition however, was his mount, Lei. The familiar pitch black coat adorned with leather barding coloured a cobalt blue, both eyes affixed on her rider as he drew closer to her. Kyran wasted no time hopping onto Lei and releasing her from the post she was hitched to, before turning back to the wild seeming horse. Perhaps another nearby rider was attempting to call their steed to them? With haste, he unhitched the other horse whom bolted soon thereafter before re-mounting Lei.

"Come on Lei, the time for rest is over. We have ourselves a prince to find." He said to his steed as they swiftly took off into the streets of Garleton. Alas, the pair would not get far before running upon an... interesting spectacle. What seemed to be an armed bandit was accosting a would be evacuee in the middle of the streets. Doubtlessly the assailant would've noticed his less than subtle arrival, and as such Kyran would now have to deal with this situation as well. Wonderful, just wonderful... If he wasn't careful the woman could be put in harm's way, bandits held no morals after all, what's one innocent life in exchange for riches to them? Out of the corner of his eye, the squire noticed an archer taking aim upon the lowlife, and it also seemed that he'd not yet noticed his would-be assassin. Perhaps if I can keep his attention... A wry smirk appeared on his face, albeit briefly before Kyran began slowly pacing towards the assailant. "HEY, LOWLIFE! LET HER GO!" The Reynes squire bellowed, his somewhat cocky grin re-emerging as he continued his slow and meticulous advance. "Picking on unarmed civilians are we? Bah, what did I expect, you lot are all the same kind of cowardly. If you're looking for a fight though, I'll more than happily oblige." Kyran said as he made a big show of drawing his blade, flourishing once before locking eyes with the scumbag, Pacing in such a way as to expose the back of his opponent's head to the unseen archer nearby.

The jolly inn, evening

I think it's time to leave william thought to himself as he decided to head for the exit, with a hop, skip and a jump William casually tried to leave the inn by opening the door. When doing so though there was a bandit walking past at the exact same time Damn my E rank luck William thought as he stared at the bandit. Then one second passed, 10 seconds, maybe even longer, the mage was snapped back into reality before he could react by a bright light. When he could see again William saw the bandit unconscious on the floor, but before he could properly react to see who had helped him, an arrow wizzed past almost hitting his benefactor.

Before the owner of the arrow could notch another arrow William quickly opened the tome that was already in his hand as a reaction to his very recient encounter.

"Thunder" as soon as the book was opened William released his magic.

Rin
An Inn, Garleton: Evening

While Rin was unsatisfied with the answer of the stalker, he would have to let it go since his client was already moving away. He definitely made sure to give the man a solid glare as they moved by before returning to his duties as a proper bodyguard. Thankfully the day passed by uneventfully, the money they made was enough to pay for lodging and food at the local inn in town. Rin would have insisted they share a room, but he knew that the client required privacy due to their opposite genders and basic societal courtesies. It annoyed him to no end, but he would have to accept the risk for the happiness of the client.

He entered his room and looked around, it was unimpressive. Not that it needed to be, simply having a bed was already a step up from the bedroll on hard dirt he usually slept in. He set aside his spear and lay down in bed, not bothering to take off his armor as he stared at the ceiling. It was still early, much too early to be sleeping. A yawn escaped Rin's lips regardless, the day finally catching up to him as he stretched his legs out. Perhaps if he closed his eyes... just for a minute...

"Rin! Something seems to be happening outside! I apologize for the interruption but please accompany me!" Rin's eyes snapped open, curses tumbling out his lips as he scrambled out of bed and grabbed his spear. "Sumire stop! You can't go outside without accompaniment, it defeats the purpose of a bodyguard!" He heard the chaos outside, the screams as people were cut down by god knows what. And his client was going to run off into that chaos by herself with no protection. The door was a suboptimal path, luckily Rin had been given a room with a view. He smashed open the window with his spear, leaping through and ignoring the broken glass that cut up his clothing. He looked left, then right, spotting Sumire exiting the inn and running into that man. "This is why I eliminate threats to client safety early, this girl is making me too soft-" He muttered to himself as he ran towards the duo, ready to skewer the man before he could lay a finger on her.

A flash of light exploded from Sumire's hands, knocking away a bandit that Rin had barely noticed in his singleminded focus on the stalker. Shame welled in his heart, but he squashed it down as he focused on the situation as a whole. There was no time as an arrow fired near Sumire, barely missing her and embedding itself into the doorway. Rin had closed the distance by now, moving in between Rin and the stalker as he fired a bolt of lightning at the archer who was attacking. "We need to get out of here right now." He called upon his knowledge of the town, mind going a mile a minute as he thought about the most well defended points of interest. "We're going to the castle, there will be no arguments." He appraised the mage who Sumire had defended for some pointless reason. "You will be coming with us." Rin determined that a larger group would be optimal, more bodies to put in between harm and the client.

The arrow would find it's mark in the bandit's throat as he turned his head towards the young knight. With a strained and muffled groan, he crumpled, letting go of the lady who proceeded to run towards the castle, having already heard the evacuation calls. The shot was clean, not much blood from the wound, and within moments he was dead.

Though Kyran's calls would get the attention of not only the one he called out to, but another. He heard a stall behind him collapse, turning to see just in time a bandit trying to sneak up on him. His mount would turn and step back a bit, giving them extra spacing as he would prepare to square up. The scene was also visible to Belisandre, however, Kyran himself was in the way of a clean shot. An arcing shot would be required.

The blast of lightning would surge through the bandit, causing him to spasm erratically before collapsing on the ground. Unlike the light spell, this more lethal thunder spell actually did end the bandit's life. Close behind these two was the dancer's bodyguard, Rin. He didn't seem too pleased with what his employer was doing. He seemed dead set on heading to the castle, though as they would begin to move, two bandits brandishing axes stood in their way. More or less, they spotted Sumire's clothing.

"That's some right fancy clothin' there lil' lass, swear on me mum we'll let you three go if she hands over those robes. Look like they cost a fortune. Or we can kill you, but blood don't look good when we're fencin' it".

Well they at least talked before attacking. Given the present party, this may be a fatal mistake for these two.

Trace Retloth
Merchant Row transition to Western Street

Trace had said the obvious. Perhaps he was more shaken than he thought. It really wasn't like him. Still, this wasn't the time to dwell on it. Artemisia had taken the vulnerary and was following the logical course of action, one that she had probably already decided on before he spoke. She didn't seem to have any intention of continuing their acquaintance and disappeared with nothing beyond a non-committal reply. But, Trace had a feeling... that this mess wasn't going to let either of them avoid the other.

A moment after she disappeared into the crowd of evacuees Trace was moving. He held his lance low and ready as he avoided trouble while getting to the western street of the town as quickly as he could without exhausting himself. A swift and steady ground eating jog got his feet on the western street in a matter of a few minutes and his eyes swept the chaos in search of that prince's flashy attire, or a spot with enough people and trouble to be a sign of his presence.

What he found was a mild surprise. There was a small oasis of calm where his employer and several others appeared to be organizing themselves in preparation for a push into the center of the bandit presence in town. Yup, Trace had been right. This was the kind of employer who jumps into dangerous situations. But, at least he didn't jump alone.

Trace closed the distance at the same efficient pace and bowed his head to the prince briefly before giving an extremely brief report in a matter-of-fact voice, tacitly placing himself as an additional warrior in the Prince's assault squad. "Your Highness, the evacuation continues at a good pace. Small engagements continue throughout town but capable citizens are assisting the guards and losses seem minimal."

Belisendé
Evening | Stables | Garleton, Lothian Empire

A sudden shout from the right startled the young woman. Thankfully she'd already loosed her arrow, it's aim would be unaffected by her sudden start. Bel snapped her head toward the sound of the voice, finding it's owner to be a young man astride a beautiful black mare. She watched as the horse and rider paced forward before yet another sound reached her ears. A thud of something heavy falling to the ground. Slowly, Bel turned back to the where the woman had been just a few moments before, and where the bandit now lay on the ground with an arrow stuck in his neck. The few moments she'd taken her eyes off the enemy - something that might prove a grave mistake on a true battlefield - had resulted in a man's death. He... he's dead? That woman is safe? That rider...

She turned back towards the young man, intending to - do what? Thank him, question him? Tell him to escape? She didn't get the chance as she spotted a sinister silhouette sneak into view behind the fellow squire.

"Ah - behind you!" She meant to call out, but her voiced was drowned by a large gray and dappled horse exploding onto the scene. Sunbeam had crashed his way into the area, braying loudly and angrily, and when he stopped just in front of Bel she could have cried from relief. He was safe! "Sunbeam!"

She mounted the horse faster than she'd ever done in her life, and Sunbeam practically sailed over to the other pair, standing tall beside the black mare. Even with his tail adorned with a cute pink ribbon, the stallion cut an imposing figure, snorting brutishly and glaring at the bandit before him. Belisendé silently glanced at the other rider, looking for the more confident of the two of them to take the lead. She hoped the sight of two armed people on horseback would be enough to get the bandit to back down so that they could escape to the castle.

Einar
Lothian Empire || Garleton: Plaza || Evening
As soon as Einar caught sight of those broad ebony wings spreading open and the one-eyed lancer brandishing her weapon openly as she took aim, the mercenary concluded that the battle was over. With a smirk, he put one last final shove into it all, causing the bandit to stumble a few inches back before regaining his composure and raising his weapon high up to strike the mercenary once more.

But it would never land; even if the lady missed due to a lack of depth perception, the bandit was a lot slower and he could of easily evaded at that point to slit his throat, especially since the small family had finally gotten out of the way. Smugly sneering at the man, Einar held his sword firm to the side as he began surveying the rest of the blazing inferno as the rest of the bandits pillaged the town and commoners scattered like ashes to the wind.

The sound of a clank was all that was needed to confirm the death of the man and a small, hapless sigh escaped his lips as he turned towards the creepy-looking lady on her dragon, "Thank's for the assistance lass," slightly smiling at the girl before the prince instructed the family of three to travel towards the castle. Well, that was that.

Following that, the boy stepped forward and issued a command to the trio to drive off the bandits with him, urging Einar to peer behind him, seemingly unconcerned with the raging chaos threatening to engulf them at any second as he deftly twirled his sword around and grasped it, doing this at least twice during this encounter. "Yeah, gotcha," his voice sounded relaxed, easygoing with no strain or stress before looking to the groups and swiftly analyzing the situation.

However, another unknown entered the area, raising his voice to address the prince, causing the young mercenary to break eye contact with the entire scene and peered behind him to notice that a rather plain individual had joined the group. Einar didn't bother giving the man the time of day and turned his head back as he watched the town burn.

"Aaaaaanyways, I'm no tactician, but I think we should all go after that bandit with the gaudy gear," he uttered out loud to the team, but in particular, this statement was primarily levied at the prince as Einar turned his head back and gazed at him with his own piercing stare, a stark contrast to that same relaxed tone he had. "He's obviously the leader, plus there is no way we are going to be able to completely quell this incursion, but at the very least, we should be able cow them by taking him out."

He turned back around to the skirmish and pillaging taking place and smirked, "After all, cut off the head of a snake, the rest of the body dies."

"Sure why not, sounds like fun" William agreed to follow the bodyguard with a big mischievous smile.

If only it would be smooth sailings to the castle, which within seconds it was proven that it wouldn't be with the addition of some rather loose tongued bandits. With the demands of handing over the girls garments William started chuckling to himself. "I swear all bandits have the same script no matter where they are" without being able to hold the chuckle and laughing noticablely William simply looked at the book he was still holding open. I'll hit the further one and hopefullythe bodyguard is actually useful William thought to himself.
"wind" before anyone could actually react to his laughter william already let loose a spell.

Sumire
Outside the Inn, Garleton: Evening

The Shine spell was able to blind the bandit into knocking himself unconscious. Just as the situation seemed to be resolved, an arrow literally missed the dancer by mere a mere inch. The shock almost caused her heart to leap out but this was not the time to flinch and stay still, Sumire immediately attempted to take cover behind a post. A moment later, a loud zap noise echoed throughout the area, followed by a thud on the ground. As she peeked out from behind the post, the assailant lied still on the ground. "Hmph, don't think I owe you, this makes us even."

At how dire the situation was, the pinkette had only just recalled a shattering noise of a window just above them a mere moments ago. Turning towards the source of the noise, she caught sight of her bodyguard who must now be feeling irritated at how recklessly his client ran ahead. Instead of a scolding, the silver haired male expressed his urgency to leave the area and head towards the castle with reasons unbeknownst to her. Regardless, the dancer trusted the boy's decision and nodded in agreement, "Please lead us there quickly, Rin!"

However, another decided to interrupt the group but this time had the decency to speak before approaching. That decency was now nonexistent as Sumire visibly expressed how revolting it was of them to demand to strip off her precious robe. How DARE they ask an innocent maiden to take off her clothing. "Rin... Show these hooligans no mercy." Iron sword unsheathed and danced in the air, resembling a defensive stance alongside the recruit. Rin could feel inspiration running through him to make an extra move with boosted speed.

Rin
En Route To Castle, Garleton: Evening

The bandits held no surprises, just two fools holding wood cutting axes that they probably didn't know how to use. Not properly anyhow, they would simply swing any which way to try and butcher the group for their possessions. Unfortunately, they had decided to trained professionals with weaponry. Rin brandished his spear wordlessly, somewhat confused that the ruffians hadn't seen him carrying it and chosen a better target. Maybe they were just that dumb.

The stalker chuckled, then less than a moment later he shot forth a Wind spell much to the surprise of Rin. So this was a true mage then, not simply one of those fools who learned the one flashy spell to impress people at parties. He felt vindicated in his earlier choice to bring him along, he would be much more useful than the meat shield he had thought of him as.

Of course Rin had no time to compliment the masterful performance of Sumire or the well executed spell that the stalker had shot off. Rin dashed forwards with the look of a predator in his eye, appearing in front of the bandit with no warning and thrusting his lance directly into his throat mercilessly. "You chose a poor career and poorer targets." He stated matter of factly, making a second attack to the heart just to ensure the bandit instantly died.

Thom Chaff Garleton: The Evacuation, Evening

The guardsman hated getting ordered around by the nobility, he always had the feeling that they would throw them into the very jaws of death to advanced themselves, or so they could gloat to their buddies that they had won a battle. Even though it came at a great cost of life, he narrowed his eyes at the prince wondering which one he would choose for the gathered warriors, but needless to say he felt semi safe with the wyvern rider nearby she could probably spot danger, and keep the group from running into any ambushes along the road as the prince threw them at the bandits. He was willing to follow the princes orders, because it mean't more combat. The part of him that abhorred the violence was now locked away, there was only the part of him that had led him to survival on the battlefields of the past.

He choose to fall-in slightly to the left-front side of the prince. Taking up a defensive position in front of him, the other guardsmen following suit they still had orders to make sure that he made it off the battlefield, and while he hated the nobility. Orders, were orders. They had been drilled into his head so much that he would follow them to the T even if it was from some of the worse the nobility had to offer. After all the constant lashes, and corrections he had received when he didn't follow orders had put him on this course. In the battle addled state of his mind the warrior found it ironic that he would do anything including sacrificing the brothers who stood beside him to follow orders, so he wouldn't experience pain. Yet he willingly threw himself into combat where there was no shortage of it. He would of laugh if this was a private moment, but it wasn't.

While he examined the mercenaries around him, he did grimace. Of course they were valuable. But their only loyalty was to coin. There was no loyalty to country, or crown. So he would push any of the mercenaries back from getting too close to the prince. After all any one of them could of been working with their enemy, and if they were he didn't doubt that this would be the perfect time for someone to plunge a blade through him. "I suggest we check the inns in the city, as most of the mercenaries would be there for the night. We can ask them to help us." He said aloud, though he regretted it almost immediately after it left his mouth. He shouldn't be offering suggestions to a noble. He didn't doubt that he would receive a flogging for it later. But there was no wishing it back now, and he doubted that the prince wouldn't of heard him speak. But he could linger on the punishment later, for now he had to focus on the battle.

"I would like to go and check on the others, but people on this side of the city may get caught up with the bandits, and be captured or even killed. The people here are the ones most in danger, and repelling or suppressing the bandits until everyone has evacuated would save more lives", he explained.

"I understand that increasing our chances of winning would do us some good, but we have precious little time to organize a proper force", he was prepared to even go it alone. Defeating the bandit was not a worry, so long as he did not overextend and be surrounded, he could retreat at any time, keeping distance with magic. However he sees this as fortunate, in addition another mercenary, they have a total of five able bodies here.

---

In not long they moved a bit up the street to meet the rest of the bandits. Alnard took up his sword, stepping forward,

"This town is currently under attack, very soon it will become a sea of flames by the Lyonesse military. If you also value your lives, I suggest you find your own way out of here", he warned.

"Whatsa lil' lordling doin' so far away from his castle? Aight wait... That red hair. Might you be one of the princes?

"What of it? If you value your lives-"

"I'll not be told by some lordling barely a child tell me what to do. Boys! Get'em! Capture the red haired boy alive! He may be worth a fortune!", an expression akin to frustration and annoyance came across Alnard's face, he snapped the fingers on his free hand, causing magical flame to appear.

The fury of a young girl, wind, and a spear, was their last moment. Before either bandit could swing their weapons, they were dead. One sliced to ribbons with wind, on top of being sent flying back into the pavement, while the other was skewered twice in quick succession. Trying to talk didn't seem to pay off for them, at the very least it was more that could be said for them than their compatriots, even if their words were still crude. Perhaps a simple villager would have been intimidated, but it seems they were not entirely aware they were dealing with people with deadly skills.

Still, the way was open now. The castle was but a spry sprint away, and there were enough soldiers along the way that it was deemed safe once they crossed out of the plaza.

Kyran Cynmaer

Garleton, Stables

A satisfied smirk dawned upon the Reynes squires's face as the bandit before him fell to the dirt with an arrow embedded in his throat. Evidently his distraction had worked, the degenerate was unaware of the archer's presence until his fate had been sealed. He looked to the archer, still half-obscured by shadows and offered a quick nod to them as thanks.

Whoever they are, they aren't a bad shot, that much is sure.

Now that the scenario before him had played itself out, Kyran had a job to get back to... Or rather he would get back to his search if he didn't hear the telltale sounds of trickery behind him. Swiftly, the squire whipped around, backpedaling slightly to confront the source of the new sounds. The duo was greeted by yet another vagabond, this one attempting to sneak up on him. Perhaps taunting was not his wisest idea, he'd almost fallen for the exact same trap that ended the last brigand. Two pairs of eyes leered at the would-be attacker before them, Kyran gathering as much information as he could from the way the bandit postured himself. With the way he wields that axe, It's unlikely he even knows how to use that thing. More so, I'm at an advantage in terms of both mobility and training. He could very well end this poor soul here and now, but was it truly necessary?

Momentarily, his focus lapsed as a second horse strode up beside him, with the archer mounted upon it. He glanced at her briefly before, turning his attentions back to the bandit. Kyran didn't want to kill needlessly, though if he let this one go free, the vagabond would surely just return to his pillage and slaughter. He would not permit such a thing, innocent lives were at stake! Thus the rabid dog needed to be put down before he hurt someone else.

"Know that I don't want to do this, I'd much rather show mercy and be on my way. But you tried to sneak up on me, axe in hand. That alone tells me enough of your intent." He said while staring at the bandit. With an explosive burst of speed, Lei took off straight in the brigand's direction, as Kyran readied his blade for contact. If the badit attempted to dodge, he could redirect Lei to trample them underfoot. If he stood his ground? He'd find the squire's blade sailing towards his neck and chest. Quickly and decisively, Kyran would end this.

ENGAGEMENT END!
  • Bandit Archer (Belisandre/Kyran +5 EXP)
  • Bandit (Kyran +5 EXP)

RESULT
Belisandre @Yankee Earned 5 EXP
Kyran @CriticalHit Earned 10 EXP

Even if the bandit had blocked the blow, the force of a swing combined with a rushing steed would be enough to send him reeling. The cheap, shoddy axe would be easily overpowered as Kyran's blade found it's mark slicing through his shoulder. The bandit would fall, and quickly succumb to his wounds. The bandits that were nearby would not be coming this way for the time being, as they were occupied someplace else. Now was the time to go, as the way was now clear.

Belisendé
Evening | Stables -> Castle | Garleton, Lothian Empire

Belisendé watched as the other rider quickly dispatched the would-be opportunist of a bandit, taking in the arc of his sword as it connected with the other man, blood flying before the bandit fell. The way the young man had quickly thought up a distraction plan just a few moments ago, and the way he handled his blade and deftly maneuvered his horse was expert and inspiring. Bel breathed, trying to calm herself down, and now that she got a much better look at the man she could tell her must have been a trained knight. It was lucky that he had found her. If the bandit archer had noticed her and attacked... if the axeman had used her single-minded focus on the assailant to sneak up behind her instead... The train of thought brought gruesome images to her mind, and she shook her head as if to clear it of such things.

"Thank you," she said to the rider, "I... Just, thank you." As far as thanks went, it was pretty lame, but the state of her mind let alone the state of the surrounding city had affected her. Everything had happened to suddenly - and she'd just killed a person, hadn't she? It may have been the first time she'd watched someone die, let alone ended their life herself. I... think I might be sick... she though, and hunched over slightly on her horse. Sunbeam backed away from the other horse and the corpse, sensing his rider's distress and eager to leave the area. He was an animal of wild nature, but when Bel was on his back he wouldn't run recklessly.

"The soldiers have called to evacuate to the castle. I will head there," Bel said aloud, though only half-directed at the knight. Having a plan of action helped to calm her down a little and ease some of her nausea. Plans were good. "Please stay safe," she told the other man, figuring he was out to help direct any stragglers like herself. With a quick, sharp nod, Sunbeam snorted and took off in the direction of the castle.

The young noble held tightly to her horse's reins, though she let him direct them both toward the castle. Belisendé was not a bad rider, or she liked to think at least, but she was not in the state of mind to lead at the moment. She let Sunbeam dodge or jump rubble and fallen market stalls as they passed them as they steadily made their way to safety. Bel kept her gaze focused ahead to watch for anymore enemies, and she dearly wished she wouldn't meet any. The recent altercation was enough. Don't think about it... for now... she thought to herself, and instead she thought to the knight she'd met. As the horse and rider arrived at the castle, she suddenly realized - I didn't even ask his name! Nor offer him mine! How incredibly rude of her, she thought. After everyone was safe, she would seek him out and give him a proper thank you, and the least she could do was learn his name.

Einar
Lothian Empire || Garleton: Plaza || Evening
"Good choice," Einar grinned, addressing the prince looking at the larger individual, raising an eyebrow as he shrugged, unconcerned about the discord sowed in the midst of the city, whether it be by the magic that lingered behind the fire or the assault of the brigands it didn't matter. What mattered was moving forward as he hustled with the rest of the group, passing by guards escorting commoners or fending off brigands, some commoners fleeing for their life or sobbing over a body that was unmoving as they were.

However, the mercenary just kept moving ahead, in front of the others, though it was mainly due to the big dude shoving him. Honestly just made him laugh in his head, as he couldn't tell if the guy was just trying to use him as a meatshield or something; bit cowardly to him, especially with that armor he had on.

But that didn't matter as the five of them arrived on the scene with little to no interruptions in the midst of the eye of the storm. It wouldn't be safe for too long as he studied the bandits, eyeing the small group of a bigger whole up and down as he tightly gripped his weapon, studying which one would be the first target to take down. His eyes drifted between the two archers, arrows nocked and bow wavering as their hands moved erratically between the five of them, focusing primarily on the dragon lady, the brigand brandishing an axe as he hefted it onto his shoulder before leveling it back with the ground with his hands.

However, he had a much bigger target right now, though he didn't want to engage the man just yet. Einar smugly smiled at the trio standing in front of their leader, leering and flipping off the brigand with an axe, mouthing dumbass as a taunt to lure him in. Despite these gestures as the leader and Alnard made their exchange, he couldn't exactly goad the peon into striking.

"Hm, he either has a lot more self-control than I expected or is unsure to strike at us right now," he mused, wryly smiling at the group as he chuckled, blinking for a split second as the older bandit barked at the Prince, rolling his eyes. "By the way Alnard, nine times out of ten, bandits won't negotiate," he shouted, digging his feet into the dirt before giving a strong push forward, launching himself into the fray once the duo finished chattering, not giving the brigands the opportunity to strike first.

From what he determined, the archers seemed to have their eye on the dragon, so that settled who his target was as he diverted to the side, hopping out of the way where the bandits axe would land when attempting to strike at him. It was like Einar wasn't giving him the time of day as the weapon clumsily slammed into the dirt, much to the bandits chagrin as he nashed his teeth in anger, only to get dirt kicked in his face by the mercenary.

Not getting bogged down by that interaction, Einar saw the archers face contort and eyes widen as he approached, reading the fear written all over their wincing body. The bandit was in a panic and from what he noticed out of the corner of his eye, the other archer was now aiming at him. Perfect.

As soon as Einar was within a few meters of the archer to his right, he raised his sword up slightly, before digging his heels in and coming to a quick stop. What followed was just as he predicted; the mercenary watched as the arrow from the other archer whiz past his chest with another being shot directly at him, only to completely miss its mark as the arrow flew by his sword arm and embedded itself into a blazing building.

The last thing Einar ensured the archer saw was his smug smile as he swiftly approached the man, holding his sword up above him. Before they could even react, the mercenary briskly brought his blade down, carving the bandit from his arm all the way down to his abdomen.

Trace Retloth
Western Street Boss Battle

There was no overt response to Trace’s report, but that was not much of a surprise. After all, there wasn’t anything in the report that was more important than the impending battle with the savage who seemed to be the bandit leader. Trace was not one to care about gaining attention. He didn’t enter the battlefield to gain fame but rather power and a living. Standing out too much was a good way to get targeted, just like his employer was proving during his ill advised chat with the savage.

Though, the chat did have two beneficial effects. First, Trace was able to assess the capability and numbers of the enemy. Two archers of little skill, one axe wielder of little skill, and the leader himself who likely had some little skill. Second, he was able to assess his allies in this fight. The prince carried a sword but was taking a back line position and wielding magic at present. There was also an impatient and undisciplined man with a sword who seemed likely to make the first move. Above the field was a lance wielding wyvern rider. And last was the only one in official guards armor, a man with an axe who stayed close to the prince and seemed wary of anyone who wasn’t as overtly devoted as he was.

That was fine. Trace didn’t need to get close to the Prince to accept his coin and kill his enemies. He just needed to wait for the right opening and then capitalize on it while the guardsman held the line and kept the Prince safe.

Sure enough, it wasn’t more than a few moments before that impatient swordsman leapt into the fray, bypassing the frontline bandit and attacking one of the archers instead. It was a good move, opportunistic and aggressive, and quite likely to be very effective as well.

Trace followed behind, staying quiet and avoiding any bold moves until just after the swordsman passed the axe bandit. The bandit was vulnerable. His axe was low. He was still recovering his stance after missing his first strike. And, his attention was diverted by the swordsman’s brash charge. So, Trace took advantage by sliding into the bandit’s blind spot and striking from a low angle as he had with his previous opponent. Even if the first target moved out of line, a second and third lethal strike point waited just behind to receive his spear.

However, this wasn’t a simple duel but a small battle. Whether or not the bandit actually died was irrelevant. The strike would either kill him, wound him, or keep him off balance for the wyvern rider to finish off. No matter which occurred, Trace would proceed to engage the other archer, keeping a wary eye on the leader at all times.

Branna Naves

Western Street || Lothian Empire: Garleton || Evening
Stroking Mors’ flank, Branna listened to Alnard speak, her eyes focused on the flecks of red on the ground as the wyvern tore pieces from his meal. As it was her employer who was speaking, she listened, but listening didn’t mean agreeing. Frankly, organizing forces sounded like a waste of time. The bandits were weak, easily dispatchable by any trained weapon-wielder. The imperial forces were focused on evacuating the town, yes, but what of the others? Why not send the mercenaries after the bandits? Hit them fast and hard while the evacuation was still happening. It wasn’t like a few sellswords would be able to help much with evacuations anyway.

Still, considering that it was her future coin pouch talking, Branna didn’t voice her opinions, choosing instead to maintain her smile and watch. She maintained this silence as the lordling moved them down the street, patting Mors so the wyvern knew that mealtime was over. When the bandits came into view, her smile broadened, and she swung her spear so that the tip rested just above her shoulder.

Rotating her spear in her hand as she listened to the pointless dialogue between the two heads of the groups, she glanced between the group of bandits, then between her new compatriots. There was no point in fighting over food now that Mors had eaten, so she waited patiently until the others had chosen their targets. Then, grasping Mors’ saddle, she pulled herself up just as the wyvern swung up and forwards so that she could engage the last available underling: the unfortunate archer who was, as shown by Mors’ earlier meal, easy pickings.

A laugh floated out of her as she speared him through, the sound as broken as ever.
