Lately I've been binge-watching various Chinese fantasy series on Netflix and a few have sparked a desire to return to Asian medieval supernatural/mythical fantasy.

I'm best with Japanese and more common Chinese folklore, but willing to learn.
Willing to play romance or adventure or both. Though, please no tragic endings.
Would prefer to play original characters and settings but I might be wiling to play within a fandom.

I have no ideas for plot yet, just an intense craving to play around in this setting. I'll probably choose a character with an animal clan background, though whether it will be phoenix, dragon, fox, kirin, or whatever.. I have no idea yet. I can choose that based on what any interested players want to do.

Doesn't have to be 18+ either. I just hit that tag in case someone wants to go that route with a Romance theme.

Definitely interested in something like this. How prevalent do you want the fantasy elements to be?

I like the animal clans idea. Maybe these clans all serve an emperor or empress, and they nominate each player as a representative of their clan for an important mission like protecting the next heir to the throne. Or maybe the heir was kidnapped and we have to go rescue them. Or maybe we all serve under one clan and a rival clan kills our leader so we go on a quest for revenge! Or maybe a village needs to hire warriors to protect them against bandits or monsters! Just brainstorming ideas for the plot.

Ah nothing like a story that uses Journey to the West as a basis. You can base a million stories off that one.

I've been having the same craving! I think doing a spin on the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons and Nurarihyon could be a really fun one, but I'd be down for a lot of other ideas.

Apologies for getting silent. I had to send my furbaby of 12 years over the rainbow bridge the Monday before Halloween/Samhein and shut down most of my activities for a while. Attempting to crawl back out of my cave of mourning. ANYway...

I love seeing how many people would be interested in this sort of thing. I'll admit that I tend to suck when it comes to plots, but have strengths in the world-building side of things. I do like an animal clans idea. It also seems to be a prevalent theme that also allows for creativity. It feels to me like a multiple realms connected to the mortal realm might be too large a playing field and that we would be wiser to have things play out on a mortal realm stage. Beyond that I have no idea. Is there a city or otherwise location where people can brush shoulders like in Spirited Away? Or shall it be a scrolling adventure following a party of people on a mission? I dunno. Toss your thoughts out here. Surely we can brainstorm something.

I think it'd be fine to just have a mortal world with some fantasy elements out in, like spirits and creatures from Chinese and Japanese mythology. Could have two countries allied, one similar to Japan and the other to China in their cultures and aesthetic influences.
