The Year is 1915. In France, blood is shed by the gallon, men dying upon men. In England, beneath the veneer of Edwardian society, there is a world that the public knows not about. There are no laws that regulate these societies, at least no laws that exist on offical books, yet nonetheless these societies are hunted and persecuted by organisations that work under the name of the King. One of these societies was formerly lead by a young gentleman by the name of Valentine Blay, but unfortunately for his followers, Valentine Blay no longer exists. Quite what happened to him after he bade his followers to leave his abode is unknown, but ever since that day he has vanished- his house empty, his estate in limbo.

Luckily for the Society of the Sublime Gaze however, his work was left intact. Layers upon layers of Valentine Blay's work- his diaries, countless tomes considered downright heretical by those that arrest in the name of His Majesty, the intricately detailed maps of the House Which Has No Walls... All left in near-pristine condition, save the begriming of their surfaces with dust and secrecy. The goals held by Valentine Blay are less clear however, and the vast cult that his charismatic personage assembled now finds itself rent with discontent and infighting.

Those few that were counted among Valentine Blay's cadre of confidants are now faced with bevy of dilemmas. Do they follow the path that had begun to be hewed by their forebearer, do they strike out on their own, or do they do something else, not quite one and yet not quite the contrary either? As more and more of the cult is pulled away to clash steel with the kaiser's legions, who will come out atop the malificent pile of deception?

This will be an RP heavily inspired by Lovecraftian ideas and horror, with a lot of its core ideas taken from the fantastic Cultist Simulator. You will take control of upper-echelon members of Valentine Blay's (surname compulsory) cult, and with your leader gone, the struggle for power can now commence.

I honestly saw the title and thought 'no, it can't be, it can't be real!". I love cultist simulator, one of my favourite games. Count me very *very* *very* interested. I'm on sleep meds at the moment so I can't stay up to chat, but I love that game. I'll be down for some IC action.

Hah! I started playing it, I got my first Power victory and I've been so hooked. This is basically going to be the start you get after a victory, but with the issue that there are other cultist with the same idea, and there's no more clear leadership like in the game where you have your previous character obviously giving you orders.

I have yet to actually achieve a victory, but the storytelling inspired by the RNG is so awesome. I was playing Lantern and seeking knowledge, and although I was new to the game I was doing quite well all things considered.

I had heard that the initial detective you get is the easiest to deal with, and that as long as he remains on the board newer and more dangerous ones will generally not appear, so I left him for quite a long time just sort of doing his thing. He would occasionally produce tentative evidence against my society and person, but rarely would it last for more than a few seconds against the power of Moth and Unreason - and even when it did, it usually just expired. I was managing notoriety quite well you see, even if I was a Painter.

But eventually I have enough of him. I figure that I would rather he be an ally than an enemy, especially as my Moths do sometimes get injured burning evidence, and there’s just too much notoriety to keep burying it in paintings eventually - so I go and speak to him with my highest rated piece of Lantern lore, hoping to convince him that my way of doing things, my society alone and not his fetid institution, can be trusted with this knowledge and this power, for the betterment of all mankind.

I didn’t expect him to spit in my face and tell me that I’m exactly the reason he does his job. He gains the Grim aspect.

My character dislikes this turn of events intensely. I speak to him again, and tell him of the despair that awaits him without the guidance of the Watchman, in whose steps we follow. Using the despair card, to which grim Detectives are meant to be vulnerable, fails too. He reports that the grim realities of the world are why he will be a light to people in his own right, and he becomes an idealist too.

I subsequently dispense with these charades and send my Disciple Victor to kill him. Twice Victor fails, and on the second time he becomes Tenacious and highly resistant to Edge.

In fear my actions become rash, despite having made it to the final step of ascension. I summon a Hint and send it after him.

The result is that he survives and becomes a Mystic.

This no name, no rep, no talent nobody just became statistically one of the biggest threats in the game - and the worst thing? In my panic I had forgotten all about controlling notoriety, but had still been producing paintings to meet my living costs. I fail to notice as he’s grabbed by the season card, and produced damning evidence of my activities.

I am tried and imprisoned in a most permanent way.

But the best thing is that in my next play through, I simply played as *him*. I read the file on my old character, who I imagined sitting in his cell and smiling softly as the Great Work continued, and I began on an entirely new journey.

Gosh damn I love this game.

The Wood grows around the walls of the Mansus. As any student of the Histories knows, the Mansus has no walls, and it is folly to enter alone.
