Belisendé
Mid-Morning | Temporary Camp | Reynes Kingdom

"H-hero? Please..." Bel laughed, though the sound was nervous and hollow. She certainly didn't consider herself to be a hero of any sort, but she wanted to get that out of her mind for the moment. She kept a small smile in place as the knight - now with a name! - continued. "Kyran, is it? Nice to finally, officially meet you as well." When Kyran and Einar chatted about the stronghold, she looked over in the direction of the fort, just visible from where they were. Yes, they'd have to scout it again and again in order to eventually take it. The thought chilled her, but she had been working herself up to the task. From the corner of her eye she caught Einar's expressive hands in action and was brought back to the conversation. "Strange "date" indeed. And, do you really think it's her? I'd love the chance to finally see her in action..." Bel sighed. She thought the same now as she did then, that dancers had a unique ability to motivate others, and that she'd need all she could get in the coming days. She turned away from the distant, ominous fort fully, bringing her full attention back to the boys for now, though she knew that soon enough she'd have to move with the rest of Alnard's forces in an actual attack...

Daybreak, the Next Day | Fortress' Edge
...and the time had come. His Higness the Prince, though now branded a rebel, stood with his gathered forces, though reduced as they were. Belisendé was among them, astride her horse. Sunbeam stomped and snorted in place, awaiting the Prince's orders as much as Bel herself was. Though the horse was an eager animal, his rider was still, her hands clamped down tightly on the reins. She had been training with her bow, her accuracy improving and her confidence along with it, but the thought of going directly into battle - of killing another person, again, weighed her down just as much as her skill lifted her up. Her mouth was set in a grim line as she waited. I just have to do it, she thought, this is what I wanted when I left. I have to do it. I can do it. I won't let Prince Alnard down.

"Attack!

The Prince's voice lit a fire inside of both horse and rider, and Bel spurred her steed forward along with the rest of the group. As the fort's gate guards came clearly into view, the pink haired squire drew her bow and held it ready, taking aim at one of the axemen. Inside the walls there were surely more bandits, and she'd be sure to take care of any archers she saw, but first the way in needed to be cleared for those better suited to close quarters fighting. She pulled back an arrow, letting it fly swiftly at the man, hoping to take him down quickly in one shot.

Trace Retloth
Transition to Fort Battle {Chapter 1}

The escape from Garleton and the subsequent march toward relative safety was exhausting. Trace was in good shape, but sustained forced marches were not something that mercenaries preferred. It was a good way to tire yourself out before a battle.

The camp was alright. There were enough latrines and there were enough supplies for him to replace the vulnerary that he had given away. There were even people willing to offer training. He had nearly taken Sir Hadrick up on that. Proper lance training was expensive. But, in the end, he had decided to take on a couple smaller jobs to help prepare for the coming battle. Taking a fort was never as easy as one would wish, even if it were only defended by bandits.

Thus, after hardly having time to confirm that Artemisia had survived and stuck with the group, Trace had rushed around taking care of one thing or another. He was not familiar with many of his new comrades. Time would tell who was worth knowing. And time waited just as long as usual.

The morning of battle arrived as soon as it could and Trace found himself arrayed among this strange group of allies.

There was little time to consider too much. The order to attack was given and a cavalry archer moved ahead just enough to line up a shot at the north most axe bandit. Trace knew that that opponent would be down quickly. Either the arrow would finish him or the others would. Trace's own first opponent would be the southern axe bandit. Yet, these bandits were different from those in Garleton. They stood with just a bit more confidence and had better footwork.

He wouldn't underestimate them. He paced himself so that he arrived slightly ahead of the group and swung his lance at full extension, hoping to strike the bandit's side or belly with the razor edge of the lance head. But, he knew the risks of over-extending. Before he even knew the results of his efforts he was already yanking the lance back to a half point grip that would allow him to engage more closely. He also made sure to mind his footwork and prepare to dodge any counter.

Yet, in the back of his mind lingered a worry. Could he evade the enemy archers?

Artemisia

Alymere Fort Exterior

The energy of the company, strident and assured given the relatively minor threat posed by their adversary, gave way to a potent silence as it began its approach. Toward its rear lagged Artemisia, indistinguishable from an ordinary army caster thanks to her borrowed robe, over whom the quiet hung heavier than for most. With its sizable opposing forces, strict organization, and proper chain of command, this would be her first real battle. Her status among her kin meant that by now she'd been in her fair share of fights, but this fight would be an altogether different beast. As the force neared the fort, she found the same old question ate at her stronger than ever: how exactly would she contribute to the fight without using her magic?

That question presented a difficult dilemma with no good answer. If she fought, she would be flaunting her malignant talents for all to see. She shivered just imaging the elders' reaction to a new Wayfarer acting so brazenly, and in such near proximity to the swamplands, no less. Yet, if she just stood by, the others would surely notice. Either path invited unwanted attention on her. Artemisia heaved a despondent breath, more of a strangled exhale than a melancholy sigh. She'd gotten herself into a rotten situation.

Her worries and doubts could not trouble her for long, however. Before she knew it, the bandits' watchmen spotted the battalion, and in reply prince leading the company began the assault. For many his outcry served as a spark on powder, causing tensed muscles to spring into action, but Artemisia wanted to shrink back. Yet, there was no running away now. The dark mage needed to get her head out of the clouds. After narrowing her eyes and gritting her teeth, she laid a palm against the side of her head and cast a tiny Flux. The sharp burst of gnawing, burning pain jolted her into alertness, awakening her battle instincts. Before her, the budding battlefield became clearer.

Thanks to her numerous melee allies, she could approach without fear of targeting from enemy swordsmen or axemen, but those were bows and hawk-eyed heads peering over the Alymere's battlements. Mages like her made a tempting target for archers, given their generally low defense and propensity for standing still while casting. Still, it was a risk she could take. The army tailors, clearly no fools, made their caster uniforms purposefully drab to avoid inviting attention. If the first push got through, which it surely would, there would be too much chaos for bowmen to take potshots. With that in mind, Artemisia took off running to join the charge.

Ahead, the force split. Some, including a cavalry archer ahead of the curve, went for the main gate. Among them Artemisia recognized Trace, but the sight elicited no reaction from the mage in fighting mode. The others, Artemisia knew, would be enacting a gambit made possible in part by her own work helping an alchemist the other day: a barrel packed with magical explosives would be used to breach part of the wall and open up a second line of attack. Opting for the latter group, Artemisia continued to sprint forward until with a start she found herself much farther forward than she would have liked. Nervous, she glanced backward. Where were all the melee fighters? In reply an arrow hit the ground nearby, narrowly missing her leg, and she jumped in fear. The shock transformed into a flood of indignant anger that drowned the dark mage's common sense. “You do NOT!” A purple spiral wreathed in black smoke sprung to life in her hand, and she thrust it at the battlements. In an instant they were consumed by a tenebrous Miasma. Artemisia realized what she'd done the next second and cursed her rashness. “Hell's teeth! The rush overcame me!” Well, it was out of her hands now. Hopefully the others would concentrate more on being thankful for the archers' disruption than on her playing her hand minute one, like an idiot.

Branna Naves

Lothian Empire: Alymere Fort || Midday

Though Branna had stayed on her feet the last few days, picking up odd tasks here and there as the little lordling bade, the small tasks didn’t present satisfactory enemy counts. As a result, she’d been forced to start feeding Mors rations on days when missions took too long for her to send him off hunting. Though he was an efficient hunter, he was also a loud one, and it only took a few days for the local wildlife to catch onto his wingbeats above the trees. This was another reason why she preferred to stay on the move, just as it was another reason why she disliked taking long jobs, but her restlessness only served to amp her up for the current battle.

After fidgeting through the lordling’s brief, stroking Mors as she looked between the wyvern and her new compatriots, Branna figured a few things: That there were a few too many stoic faces in the party asking for some hassling, and that she could count on the enemy actually putting up half a fight this time.

A broad grin broke upon her face as the fort’s sentries began their shouting. The lordling in charge commanded them forward with a dramatic wave of his sword, and that was all the signal Branna needed to urge Mors into the air, coming to a low hover just high enough so she could make out the full perimeter of the wall. It seemed the gates they were looking at weren’t the main gates, which were instead to their left. Urging Mors up again, she made out a few guards at the front of the fort, which saw fewer posts than the gate directly ahead. Interesting, convenient, and exploitable.

“Low over the forest,” she croaked, hefting her spear.

Mors veered towards the forest towards their left, angling downwards as they approached, then rearing back for a dive as they neared. While his wingbeats were audible, his diving wasn’t, which is why hunting people on ground was easier than hunting deer in forests. They left themselves open, looking for an enemy on foot rather than one falling from the sky, and this fact widened Branna’s grin as she angled her spear.

Einar
Kingdom of Reynes || Alymere Fort || Morning
It took only a few days before the assault on this fort commenced and before he knew it, Einar was standing with a crowd that was no bigger than a small militia. Didn't need too big of a group to overtake this place, especially with what the seven of them reported back. As he stood there with some of the infantry, a few of them were some fresh faces, but nevertheless, Einar did have a good idea on how to approach this.

Squinting at the fort, analyzing it once more, the mercenary placed a hand on his blade, grasping the hilt and holding it in place. His breathing was still, calm as the morning breeze, running through what he would do, as these bandits looked a bit smarter than those raiders they faced a week ago; meant he couldn't be as brash as last time.

Nevertheless, he was patient, waiting for the signal that the Princeling would eventually give as he bent his knees, as if a panther on the prowl. At the moment when the time was ripe, Alnard cried out the command; Einar felt his blood surged as his vision became sharper, digging his feet into the ground as the sounds of guttural shouting emanated from the fort, watching as the sentries scamper from the walls; the battle had commenced.

Instead of jumping into the fray, Einar waited, swiftly assessing the situation unlike a few who were a bit gung ho. What was the best time to strike was the question, as efficiency was at the front of his mind.

Speaking of gung ho, he expected that bulky man, Thom, to be at the forefront, not that woman, Artemisia, charging into the melee; thought she was more collected than that. He could help but roll his eyes, groan, and be equally befuddled at the same time, and as much as he thought it would be stupid to try and move, an arrow flying towards one of the bandits caught his attention.

Sucking up all the air, Einar dug his feet in even further before launching himself forward, sprinting into the battle. Deftly drawing his sword, the mercenary kept his eye on the woman as she was nearly struck by an hour. Good, hopefully that brought her out of whatever stupor she was in as he turned his gaze back to the primary target.

From the looks of it, they were getting tunnel vision, axe grasped confidently in their hands as they eyed the woman, rushing to make her into mincemeat. What they didn't account for was the two new threats that emerged - the arrow flying in his direction and Einar as he held his blade out to the side.

Just as he closed in on the bandit, Einar came within the bandits vision, forcing the man to address him as opposed to Artemisia. Hoisting the axe to the side, Einar smirked as the brigand telegraphed his action and instead of fully committing to the assault, hopped back as soon as he was within range, causing the bandit to whiff.

Completely open, he took it, thrust his sword forward at the mans chest.

Sumire
The Gate, Alymere: Daybreak

The day of battle finally arrived. It hadn't been too long since Sumire scouted around the premises with the accompaniment of two others from the army. Due to her nature to easily doubt strangers, the dancer stuck with the less suspicious looking duo, whose names she had forgotten, a man with white strands and a youthful girl with short, pink hair. Now standing before the fort as an army with the intention to shed blood, the frail body of the maiden trembled with anxiety. Sumire agreed to assisting the army despite her pacific character only to provide support through her healing magic and performance to motivate those in battle. There was no need to sully her hands with blood, it was the job for the rest, and Rin would be there to provide her protection if the worst comes to the worst.

Calming her breathing through deep breaths, the dancer spread her floral paper fans open in a stance. Right now, she had to concentrate in a performance to encourage the soldiers. Just dance like she always had been. The rest will handle the fighting. Breathe in, breathe out. "Rin, may this enlighten you to victory!" Sumire called out before throwing the fans outward and swinging them about in a fluttering gesture likened to a butterfly. The sleeves of her peach garment waved about in the air gracefully as the wings of a butterfly would.

Rin
The Gate, Alymere: Daybreak

Despite his protests, Sumire once more insisted on throwing herself into danger with no hesitation. But it was for the best, at least like this Rin could keep his eye on the girl and make sure she didn't get herself into trouble without him there to bail him out. He stood by her side with a stoic expression, yet a hint of nervousness peeked through his eyes. These people, he did not trust them, that much was clear in how he held himself during their scouting mission. The woman with the wyvern in particular was one to watch out for, something about her demenaor... it told Rin that she was a mercenary. Not one with integrity like him either, no. Her only loyalty lies to coin, it was only a matter of time until the treasury ran dry and she turned on them. Rin's grip on his spear relaxed slightly as she flew off and the lord called for battle.

"Have no worries Sumire, this will be over before we know it." Whether he was assuring her or himself was unknown, all that was left to do was toss aside his doubts into an ocean of blood. Her dance reminded him of his duty, it filled him with a sense of purpose as he pushed off the ground and towards the bandits at the gates. What seemed like an eternity was but an instant, soon enough he found himself on the front lines and speeding towards a bandit locked in combat with one of the other lancers of the army.

The only thing that gave Rin away was the harsh exhale accompanying a grunt as he thrust his spear into the brigands back, followed shortly after by a sharp inhale as he withdrew and spun around to face the other bandit. He twirled his spear as he turned to preserve momentum, eyes narrowed as he stepped forward and the bandit battling Einar entered his range. Another harsh exhale as Rin swung his spear into the second bandit's skull, hopefully splattering it all over the floor and prematurely ending the battle with Einar.

His eyes darted towards Sumire for a split second, you never take your eyes off the battlefield. But you also never take your eyes off your client when escorting them through hostile territory. What a conundrum. Truly, Rin is the most unfortunate bodyguard in all the lands.

Kyran Cynmaer

Kingdom of Reynes, Alymere Exterior

The next few days rushed by swiftly, with an ever present tension radiating from the looming fortress nearby. Kyran did what he could in this fleeting calm before the storm and rather than fret over the battle to come, he instead turned his focus to the duties he'd been assigned. Scouting the fortress with a few familiar faces, lending a nearby village a hand with their bandit problem, and lastly serving as sentinel along the northern border were how he spent the short time before the impending battle reared its ugly head. He also learned that his stay with the remnant Lothian forces would be longer than originally expected... much longer in fact. Though it stung having to leave behind his countrymen in such tumultuous times, he'd already decided that he'd do all he could to help Alnard on his quest, and Kyran wasn't one to break his own promises after all.

Before he'd even really noticed it, dawn had come and with it the Lothian army stood ready for battle upon the outskirts of Alymere. Now cloaked in crimson Kyran stood among the small invasion force atop Lei, both rider and steed eyeing their target and waiting with bated breath for the fated moment that the attack would commence. In the tension, Kyran found his mind wandering to strategy, how could they manage to assault a famed fortress like Alymere when so many others before had failed? If the intelligence they had discerned from scouting was to be believed, there would only be a scant force guarding this entrance, yet still they were not to be underestimated even though they were only bandits. Even wild animals could fight like demons once cornered, and cornered they certainly were. To his understanding there was also a secondary entrance to the south of Alymere that was even less well guarded, if they were to divide their forces then perhaps-

"Attack!

Alnard's rallying call to action snapped the squire from his thoughts and back to attention, the time had come at last and the battle had begun. With a start the squire shot off towards the fortress though he was initially somewhat behind those who'd already rushed into the fray. As the duo picked up speed and raced towards the gate, Kyran took a moment to survey the budding skirmish before him. To his left. he saw Bel and Einar making short work of one of the axemen, and on his right the two stoic spear-wielders whose names eluded him were currently dealing with the other brigand. Dead ahead, a mage was in the process of striking at the archers beyond the front line which was good and all, but knowingly or not they were making themselves quite the tempting target in the process. The rider also picked out one amongst their foe's ranks who seemed out of place, his footing and the way he held his blade made it clear that he was not nearly as green as his fellows. To make matters yet worse it seemed that he'd noticed the overextended magus, that wouldn't end nicely. No matter, Kyran would just have to make a lot more noise then her and he had an idea of how to do just that. With a shout he spurred his companion to a rapid pace, building up to a high speed as he surpassed the frontline in a flash of crimson and onyx. He drew his blade and prepared to strike as he shot past the mage and in mere instants he was upon his chosen quarry. Time seemed to slow down for the squire as Lei almost leaped and he aligned his blade with the swordsman's neck and upper chest, her speed and momentum boosting his strength behind the sword. If all went well, he'd deal a considerable blow to his opponent as well as taking the heat off of the mage. He'd know in mere moments as his strike was punctuated by a thunderclap of ebon hooves.

WEST GATE
BATTLE START!
  • Brigand (Bel, Rin, Einar, Sumire +5/10/5/5 EXP)
  • Brigand (Rin, Sumire, Trace +10/5/5 EXP)
  • Bandit Archer (Aiming at Kyran)
  • Bandit Archer (Artemisia, Alnard +5/5 EXP)
  • Mercenary* (Kyran, Engaged in combat)

The West Gate exploded into a flurry of combat as Alnard's forces advanced. Trace was the first to ride in with a hail of arrows from Bel behind him going straight for the other bandit as they made the first advance. Einar would quickly follow up on Bel's arrows, going for a strike on a fresh opening made by her arrows, while Rin would rush in with the fervor of two men, strike both of the bandits with two quickly-executed strikes to clean it all up. Trace would be struck upon the arm as the Brigand attempted a counter-attack, but that was all he would manage to achieve, while Einar would avoid his opponent's blow entirely.

Barely moments after the two bandits went down, the charge of a mounted soldier ploughed through between the fighters. Kyran with sword in hand went straight for the Mercenary standing in the back, who had already braced his broadsword for what was to come. The charge of a horse gave weight to his strike as steel met steel, with enough force that he was able to drag his blade through the Mercenary's defense and strike him on the shoulder, at the same time as flinging him back. It was a hard blow, but not near enough to kill him.

All that were left were two archers, both of which who took aim at Kyran, while the Mercenary mounted his own counter-attack, going for a lunging strike. One of which was immediately waylaid by a blast of dark magic, making him easy pickings as Alnard spotted the opportunity and finished him off with a blast of fire himself.

Close behind Kyran was Hadrick, who was backing him up in his fight against the Mercenary, personally he could end this right now and slay the sword-wielding bandit in a single stroke, but Kyran's gutsy move compelled him to only back him up. If Kyran were to be vulnerable he'd slay the Mercenary in an instant. For now, Kyran would have to deal with the Mercenary's counter-attack, a great lunging sword strike, jumping just a few feet off the ground with sword raised. At the same time, he was covered from the other archer's attack by Hadrick. All he needed to do was focus on the one in front.

SOUTH GATE
Enemy Spotted!
  • Brigand

@Typical

As Branna flew over towards the forest, from her wyvern she could see the south gate. Only one bandit standing guard. Perfect. Below her was Gerrian who was making it towards the forest as well, he should be in position to support her attack. Regardless, this should be an easy target. As soon as she's over the forest, she should be in range to dive in for the bandit.

Trace Retloth
Fort Battle {Chapter 1}

The flurry of combat was swift and the assault was decisive. The two bandits went down under the augmented follow-up strikes from that other lancer while others moved deeper to engage the archers and the swordsman behind them. Still, Trace wasn't quite fast enough to escape the counter stroke from the bandit he attacked. It was only a shallow flesh wound on his arm so it wouldn't slow his movements. He was more concerned about Artemisia. She had gotten herself in a very dangerous situation. He would have to keep an eye on her while she got over whatever was flustering her.

But, there was a cavalry assault on the swordsman underway while nobody was actually going for the other archer. Yet. Trace didn't stop moving for more than a moment after receiving his first injury of this war. He dashed forward toward the remaining archer and launched a swift and forceful lunge, seeking to pierce straight through the heart. But, he was not so simple as most. At the angle of his attack, the archer would have to risk damage to their bow if they sought to dodge. If they hesitated for even a moment, or were distracted by their current target, it could easily be their end. And, if this archer fell so easily as that, then Trace would pivot and add his presence to the fight with the swordsman. Any distraction could tip the scales and speed the end of the fight.

Branna Naves

Lothian Empire: Alymere Fort || Midday

Movement from the corner of Branna’s vision as Mors took off prompted her to look back, her grin opening to show teeth when she spotted one of the lordling’s men following after her. If she remembered correctly, he was a wyvern rider as well, though he didn’t seem to prioritize his wyvern as much as his sword. A pity.

Now that she was closer to the forest, the lone guard she’d seen revealed himself to be an axe-wielder. Better equipped than the lowly thugs she’d fought in the burning city, he looked like he’d seen a battlefield or two, and Branna preferred when prey put up a fight. Positioning her spear, she let Mors direct the dive, her teeth cold against the wind as the dropped towards the unsuspecting target. That the non-riding wyvern rider was there to distract him was unnecessary, but she wasn’t one to pass on an easy kill.

Sumire
The Gate, Alymere: Daybreak

Inspired by the graceful movements from the dancer, the lancer sprang forth into the battlefield and wrecked quite a havoc. The dancer, who was left behind, momentarily ceased her steps to survey the current situation of the field. The enemy forces seemed to have taken some casualties, while their army marched onwards without too much trouble, albeit minor injuries. Deciding it was still safe enough for her to continue performing, Sumire glanced over at the fighters with a closer distance to her.

One of the fighters Sumire recognized was the swordsman from the scouting mission she was dispatched in. The swift movements he displayed just moments ago was impressive, she admitted. If her encouragement could any way boost his morale, perhaps it would be worth the effort. Taking a couple of steps closer, but at a distance away from the danger zone, the dancer called for attention at the young man, "Hey you! The brunette with the sword over there! Be grateful that I offer this performance to you!"

The pink maiden pointed one of her fans towards Einar before spinning to the right, one fan raised up in the air while the other at a low angle. The pace of her movement was as quick as a faint whirlwind and a meaningful pause. Fan in the air slowly waved downward, scene similar to a fallen leaf dancing along the wind. As it lowered to the level of the performer's bright yellow orbs, her features were hidden behind the paper material before she spun towards the left in a similar manner.

Artemisia

Alymere Fort Exterior

In a matter of moments the battle turned intense. A swordfighter burst past Artemisia to take up his proper place in the frontlines, drawing her annoyed glance for a moment. If he and the others like him advanced when they were supposed to, she wouldn't be in this mess. Her gaze drifted back to the enemy archers just in time for her to watch in satisfaction as a friendly mage -on second look, the prince himself- finished off her attacker. With the melee fighters on the offense, she could focus on the ranged threat, namely the other brigand nocking an arrow at Hadrick and Kyran.

Watching him, Artemisia wondered with some amazement why he would focus on the melee fighters after his buddy just went down to a volley of magic, but she wasn't complaining. A volatile black particle cluster roiled to life in her hand, ready to strike him down. However, the brigand found himself waylaid the next moment by none other than Trace, who'd managed to close the distance on foot. Why he would be on the ground rather than the fort's perimeter wall was anyone's guess, but the dolt would surely be paying for his botched position with his life. Still, with her lancer acquaintance in close quarters, her Flux might blast him into the afterlife too, and that would be no way to repay him for keeping her secret. Instead, she used her allies' advance to move forward herself, seeking another opportunity. Only one other foe remained now, a tough-looking swordsman, but one man could not possible withstand the half-dozen now bearing down on him. Friendly fire made jumping into that fight a troublesome prospect too. The others might conceivably forgive her for being a dark mage, but if she accidentally wounded someone? No way. Once the mercenary fell, all that remained was the fort behind him. Artemisia suppressed the urge to hurl her Flux at the stone wall, since however good it would feel it would probably not blow apart the masonry. A quick look around confirmed a door to the north, and around the corner to the south probably lay the main entrance. Which way should she go?

Her search turned up an answer. There was a window in the side of the fort, little more than a slit for archers to shoot out of. And speak of the devil, she could see movement through it now. With a grin, Artemisia raised her hand, took aim, and hurled her Flux at the aperture. Any rats would need to think twice about poking out of their holes. That left everyone free to head either north or south as it suited them, so long as that mercenary bit the dust and Trace's archer went down easy.

Daybreak | Fortress' West Side -> South Side

After letting her arrow fly, Bel spotted several others charge past her and into the fray. There were Einar and Kyran, the two she'd arguably grown the closest to, as well as several others she'd only met in passing earlier in the week and during the march away from Garleton. Speaking of Garleton, though she still was loathe to think back on it, there she'd been almost completely alone during the city's ransacking - saved only by the Reynes' knight at the last moment. Now, she was fighting alongside the Prince's brigade. That fact settled warmly in her mind and heart, continuing to carry Bel forward through her initial burst of determination.

With the two front guards and an archer down, Bel bade Sunbeam to charge through the opening. She trusted the others to take care of the sword-wielder and the other archer after witnessing all of them in action. Horse and rider turned South toward the fort's main entrance, though from the corner of her eye she spotted what seemed to be an archer in the fort's window. That was bad news! Bel slowed slightly, intending to aim at the enemy when she was startled by a burst of magic in the same area. It's source was a woman robed in dark clothes, one Bel didn't recall seeing much around camp. She didn't even know the mage's name, but she already appreciated the other woman.

"Good call!" Bel said as she rode past behind the mage, speeding back up and rounding the fort's corner. As she did so, she readied her bow against any potential threats. There were two men at the entrance, their attention divided between some commotion ahead of them at the fort's outer wall and the shouts of battle from where Bel had just come from.

She took aim at the axeman, angling her bow to account for the increased distance between them. If she could take the man out, or at least weaken him, it would make things that much easier for her fellows in arms.

Einar
Kingdom of Reynes || Alymere Fort || Morning
Sword or spear, stab or slash, it didn't matter; just as his blade found itself buried up to the hilt in the mans chest, he wasn't the one to end the brigands life - that fell to the Themysciran who accompanied Sumire. It was a bit gruesome to watch as the spear cut through a part of his head, but he couldn't deny the effectiveness of the assault as the man fell limp, axe tumbling to the beaten dirt path.

Einar silently responded with a nod as he looked to the corpse and shoved it to the ground, pressing his foot on its stomach before yanking the blade out, now dyed with the crimson of the mans entrails. Just as he was about to go after another, he heard a silvery, feminine voice call out to him, prompting to pivot around, holding his sword up defensively only to see that it was the lovely foreign girl.

Funny enough, her attitude was a bit coarse and if she was any less pretty, he probably would of spat sarcasm right back at her, but instead observed with a taut, somber stare. However, what he witnessed was something unlike anything he had seen before and he felt as light as the wind and was able to bring a subtle smile to his face.

"So this was what I was feeling when I caught a glimpse of her back in Garleton," he pondered briefly as his smile widened and he slightly nodded as a response. He wasn't sure if his heart skipping was a part of the invigoration he felt, but he didn't feel like questioning it as he turned back around, dug his feet into the ground, and flew back into the fray.

His eyes were on two targets as he soared forward, eyes on the archer and the well-dressed mercenary at the gates. With Trace engaging the archer and Kyran the mercenary, Einar briefly analyzed the situation before directing his blade towards the archer. Tossing the blade into his left hand, he held the weapon out, aiming for the enemies back, primarily targeting their spine.

As he approached the man, he got close enough to where his blade could cut him down and then pivoted around, not only slicing through the mans back, possibly severing his spine, but allowed him to keep the momentum and leg up. As he spun around, he planted his other foot on the ground and dart towards the next target. Either that blow would finish him or Trace would as he closed in on the mercenary that was in the midst of his attack against Kyran.

Exploiting the opening, Einar looked to end this with one decisive strike by skewering him through the side of his chest as his thrust his blade forward, hoping Kyran could keep the mercenary preoccupied long enough for his sword to hit its mark.

Kyran Cynmaer

Kingdom of Reynes, Alymere Fortress

The impact of sword upon sword was a brief and intense moment, both the Reynes squire and his foe seeking to either overpower or deflect one another. Thankfully for Kyran, the raw force behind his swing paid off as he pushed his blade past the experienced swordsman's guard and found purchase in his shoulder, before sending him backwards a few feet. Looking around for a moment as he slowed Lei down and brought her around towards the southernmost flank of his opponent to face him once more, the rider noticed that the twin archers both now focused their aim upon him. Crackling blackened smoke and a ball of flame put an end to one of his would-be attackers, it seemed that the mage he shot past noticed the opening and exploited it quickly. More shockingly the one responsible for the fireball seemed to be Alnard, interestingly enough. There was no time for musing on his current commander's abilities though, as the mercenary in front of him was already raring to go for round two. In what felt like only a second, the swordsman was now soaring through the air, looking to deliver a nasty lunging overhead chop. By the time Kyran had noticed this and urged his mount to quickly leap off to the right it was too late to avoid the strike completely, and his opponent's sword found flesh on his left forearm. Luckily it was only a surface wound, but the searing hot pain from the sliced flesh begged to differ. Gritting his teeth and trying his best to ignore the pain, he noticed Einar on the approach, as well as a spearman who'd come to add his presence to the battle, combined with the force of the great knight alongside him, the mercenary would not be long for this world. Rushing forth, Kyran prepared a large cross-body swipe, but as his strike was midway to his target, he feinted and reversed the momentum on the backswing of the sword, looking to cleave a nice gash in the left side of the man's neck.

Rin
The Gate, Alymere: Daybreak

His adrenaline rush run dry, Rin's mind was clear as he steadily moved forward to support the rest of the army. The Wyvern Rider had split off from the group entirely to focus in from the south, while the majority of their forces continued to advance from the east through the narrow gate. His focus shifted to Sumire briefly as she shouted over at a swordsman, supporting him with a dance and following closely behind. The swordsman burst forward with great fervor, striking at the two frontline bandits with the same ferocity Rin had shown moments prior.

Analyzing the rest of the battlefield quickly, Rin noted the situation of everyone within sight. The riding archer was sniping at someone just out of Rin's sight, the female mage was using her dark sorcery against someone peeking through the window. Another archer judging by the subtle glint of iron he saw as the setting sun reflected off the archer's nocked arrow. The other spearman was striking against the enemy archer with their own swordsman, who was also striking against the enemy swordsman with a vicious strike. The lord Alnard was preoccupied with taking down a different enemy archer in the south, while-

A flash of red caught his attention as the enemy mercenary struck out at one of theirs. This one was dangerous, more dangerous than everyone else anyways. He would be rewarded fr his efforts with a swift disemboweling as Rin shifted his stance, lowering himself closer to the ground and thrusting upwards at the Mercenary's stomach. As his organs spilled all over the ground, a blast of fire shot over Rin's head and slammed into the Mercenary's face, sending him to the ground screaming as he was burnt alive. Rin looked over at Alnard with confusion, wasn't he just-

William's smiling face greeted him from afar, his fiery hands a clear indicator of just who had fired that spell. Rin begrudgingly nodded in acknowledgement, noting that he was actually here. Would have to make sure he stayed away from Sumire, had expected the fool to stay back at the camp.

WEST GATE
BATTLE START!
  • Brigand (Bel, Rin, Einar, Sumire +5/10/5/5 EXP)
  • Brigand (Rin, Sumire, Trace +10/5/5 EXP)
  • Bandit Archer (Trace +5/5 EXP)
  • Bandit Archer (Artemisia, Alnard +5/5 EXP)
  • Mercenary* (Kyran, Einar, Rin, William, Sumire +20/15 EXP) Synchronized Attack

The Archer taking aim at Kyran managed to fire a shot. Although it missed spectacularly with all that was going on, more like a desperate final attempt before going down to an array of magic and spear, courtesy of Artemesia and Trace. Next was the swordsman, the Mercenary's attack would find it's mark upon Kyran who would be forced to step away as his horse trotted backwards, only to charge suddenly towards the bandit. Though the blow would be blocked again, Einar was given an opportunity to strike, managing to find a blow before the mercenary could return to defensive posture. The cleaner blow by Einar was immediately followed by a spear and fire as Rin and William interject. The mercenary within the span of a few seconds would take blow after blow and be felled in an instant.

As soon as that was over, Bel had already made her way towards the front of the fort.

SOUTH GATE
Enemy Spotted!
  • Brigand (Branna +10 EXP)
  • Brigand (New! Attacked by Bel)
  • Bandit Lancer (New! Engaging Branna)
  • Bandit Archer (Artemisia +5 EXP)
  • Bandit Archer (Aiming at Bel)

@Typical@Yankee@Lugubrious

The brutal strike from Branna's wyvern and her spear combined would easily eviscerate the brigand here. He would not survive being so flimsily armored despite being better armed. Close behind her was Gerrian who was shadowing her and covering her back. The bandits in front of Branna as she would see beyond this broken gate would spot her, making some noises which would be assumed as war cries, they would come forward. The one wielding an axe was waylaid for just a short moment as Bel's arrow found it's mark, the Curved Shot managing to land, but it would not stop him from attacking Branna.

First the spear, and then the axe, was what she would have to contend with. However at the same time, Bel had a problem of her own to deal with.

Two arrows flew out from the windows above her, either finding a shallow mark on her horse, or herself. Either way was not good news, but it seems neither archer were very skilled, yet from this position they maintained a level of threat unless struck down by those who could reach them.

Fortunately moving up behind Bel was Artemisia, who demonstrated the reach of her magic. One of the archers would be struck with a dark blast of magic. It would prove to be fatal, taking the vantage down to one archer.

Belisendé
Daybreak | Fortress' South Side

Bel watched as her arrow struck home, lodging itself deep into the brigand's arm. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to stop him, and the man continued making his way toward the wyvern rider and her current companion - a Raven, if she recalled correctly. The little effect her attack had on the man was beginning to affect Bel's enthusiasm, though she lined up another shot regardless. Before she could follow through, movement from the corner of her eye stopped her, and the girl turned her head just in time for an enemy's arrow to slash open her cheek. Stinging pain bloomed on the side of her face, and she quickly brought a hand up to swipe at the blood slowly running from the wound. Her first battle wound, and it drove her mind into a spiral. This was a bad idea! I have to keep going. But I can't! I need to help everyone else... they can handle it themselves. I shouldn't run away! I need to retreat before I'm hurt even worse! I can't do this after all, I... I'm out of my depth...!

It was as though the cut had deflated Bel of all the hot air the Prince had instilled her with. She was still a rookie, yet she was acting recklessly - the nerves of first battle weren't enough to excuse that. The young Imperial gripped the reins of her horse tightly to keep from shaking, and below her Sunbeam stamped a heavy hoof on the ground to get her attention. Once again brought out of her thoughts by the horse (and really she would have to pamper the hell out of him soon, because he'd been doing that so much more than she should have needed it), Bel refocused on the battle. The mage woman's attack had been effective, and she watched one of the archers fall from the fortress' window. The rider grew her eyes back up, spotting the archer that shot at her and finding he was currently still aiming in her direction.

The brigand released his hold on the bowstring and his arrow flew forward. Panicked by full of self-preservation, Bel cracked her horse's reins and spurred Sunbeam to jump to the right and out of the arrow's path. The weapon nicked the horse's flank, not doing much damage but making the animal snort angrily all the same. That archer would prove a problem, it would be best to help the mage out in dealing with them.

Riding closer to the fort as the enemy made to draw another arrow from his quiver and nock it, Bel raised her own bow and took careful aim at the men through the open window. A little quicker to calm down this time, Bel let her arrow fly directly for the enemy archer's face.

Trace Retloth
Fort Battle {Chapter 1} West Side to South Side Transition

The enemies at the western gate fell in moments. Artemisia had regained her bearings and was already moving to counter the archers who were firing from inside the fort. It was clear that there would be an assault using the explosives on the western wall. Yet, though the Prince was going to probably go through the breach, it seemed that there were already several others who were focusing on that path as well. Though, it was only small movements and glances that betrayed their intent.

If Trace had to be honest, the relative lack of order in this battle made him nervous.

There were quite a few rookies in this group and they weren't being paired with veterans. They were instead rushing off and risking death. Death is normal in a battle, but losing allies when you have little to no hope of replacing them was not a reliable way to survive a war. Normally, Trace would have stuck by his employer under these chaotic circumstances. It was better to guarantee that you get paid than it was to die devoted to your job. But, this time the employer had shown diverse skills and good personal battle sense. He was also supported by a number of others, talented rookies and veterans both.

Trace wasn't needed there. The highest risk to their battle power now was the rookies that headed south to face the bulk of the enemy forces. If they just charged inside that way they would be swarmed. Even a pack of children can bring down a knight if they all pile on them at once.

"Boss, I'll support the southern advance!" He raised his voice, which few had heard to date. It wasn't the typical way of addressing a prince but it would reduce the odds of an overlooked enemy targeting him because of careless words. After all, the greatest irony is for a mercenary to accidentally cause the death of their own employer.

With his intention stated, Trace began dashing to the south. The sound of arrows striking the ground and magic assailing the walls above meant that he wasn't likely to be of immediate use. Still, he would be another target to distract any remaining archers. But, his objective was the enemies that he could engage himself. Reducing the enemy's power was the best way to protect their own.

The rookie on the horse seemed to be alright, just a couple nicks, and was working on silencing those archers above. She had promise. Battles required communication but it was entirely different from social situations. Everything on the battlefield was about surviving and winning. It was easy to know what to say and when... and when not. Promising or not, she was a rookie and Trace decided not to distract her. Instead he continued bolting past her, boots sliding in the dust as he rounded the corner and saw a lancer and a wounded axe bandit moving away from the entrance. Clearly, they were going to attack the group that was attacking from the south.

But, he wasn't sure that he could make it in time. If he could, he would finish off the axe wielder with a swift lunge to his vitals. But, that would be it. He would need to slow down after running so far so quickly or he would suffer in his next fight. The lancer was almost guaranteed to reach those in the south before Trace could recover his stamina.
