Brief History:Quentin Vanderquack was originally born in the city of Saint Canard, and lived there through most of his early school years. After high school, however, he left Saint Canard and moved to Duckberg in order to attend Duckberg University. There he majored in Software Design and Computer Engineering. Originally Quen wanted to design his own operating system and use it as the basis for starting a software company. But through out high school and even while in college he did a little a more than just tinker with software, finding he had a talent for hacking and decrypting data.
During one of his hacking sessions, Quen accidentally hacked into what he thought was a government database. However, it didn't technically belong to the government and within days Quen was arrested by someone claiming to be an "agent" and brought to a strange facility. There he was interviewed by a duck who appeared to be a German scientist, introducing himself as Ludwig von Drake. Von Drake asked peculiar questions, not so much about the crime itself but more so the methods Quen used, what kind of technology and software he'd created that could achieve such a goal. In the end Quen was offered a choice between recruitment into S.H.U.S.H. or face felony charges and serve time in federal prison. The choice was pretty clear.
In the agency, Quen was given the handle Agent 13, and learned that certain groups of numbers were reserved for agents of specific divisions, the numbers within the teens were apparently used for those within the science and R&D departments, Quentin in particular dabbled in R&D and data analysis. His time in S.H.U.S.H. was interesting, to say the least. When he wasn't developing software for the agency's database and security systems he was using his hacking and analysis skills to... "procure" enemy data and decrypt it for the agency's use. But he wasn't a field agent, such work was reserved for those with slightly higher numbers such as 20-50, anything higher than that were standard members of the staff or the young interns. One such field agent was Agent 22, who had in fact been the agent responsible for Quentin's arrest. Apparently she was one of the best in her divisions, despite her middle age, and she had an imposing figure to back it up too.
But there was another division of agents, known as the Zero Agents. These agents held the numbers that began with a zero, 01 through 09. Unlike other agents, the Zero Agents specialized in specific fields and were distinguished as the absolute best of the best. And one of them, Agent 09, was someone Quentin had gone to college with. Vera Beakley was her name, having joined up with S.H.U.S.H. to follow in her mother's footsteps. Apparently she must have outmatched her mother at some point to have become one of the Zero Agents. The two were partnered up on occasions for particular assignments and during such times they reminisced a bit about college. Feelings developed between the two and soon enough they got married.
When the two became expecting parents, they both promised to retire from S.H.U.S.H. in order to raise their daughter, but Vera had to complete one final mission. One of the Zero Agents, Agent 04 to be exact, turned traitor and defected to the enemy organization known as F.O.W.L. and the rest of the Zero Agents were tasked with hunting them down and bringing Agent 04 in for treason. None of the Zero Agents returned alive, Vera included. No one was sure of the details, just vague reports about Agent 04 being backed by mysterious shadowy lifeforms.
And then, the night came for young Webbigail to hatch from her egg. Quentin rushed for the hospital in order to be there for it, but then something went awry...
The shadow around Quen's feet seemed to gain a life of its own and expanded outward. He halted, surprised and a little afraid. Then they started pouring out. Mysterious shadowy lifeforms, and Quentin immediately knew what they were, or at least had a very good guess. These had to be the things that were supporting Agent 04 when he... when Vera...
Quentin tried lashing out and attacking, but he wasn't like Vera or her mother, he lacked the combat training and experience that they both possessed. And even so, nothing he did would have done any good anyway, it was like these things were unkillable. Then the shadow at his feet suddenly pulled him down, as if he were suddenly dropping into a deep, black, body of water. Quen struggled, trying to "swim" back up but it was to no avail. It really did feel like he was drowning, but before he could black out he heard something.
Don't worry, I'll save you!A voice? A young lady... or maybe a child? It was hard to tell. Whoever they were they didn't sound like anyone Quen knew, and yet... and yet something about the voice in his heart was warm and... familiar? A light appeared before Quen and he reached for it, resulting in a blinding flash of light. But the next thing Quen knew, he was elsewhere, not in Duckberg, or even his own world for that matter. An unrecognizable place, resembling some kind of canyon or wasteland, and unfortunately the creatures were still around him. But this time Quen found himself armed with a... weapon? It bore a resemblance to a sword or baton, but had detailing that gave it a vague key shape as well. Quen swung the weapon, and at last he seemed capable of defeating these... these things. But where was he? It didn't matter, he had to get home, had to get to Duckberg, to Webby...
He managed to figure out how to leave the world he found himself in, by way of opening a "crack", and appeared to be donned in armor whenever he stepped through them. He found himself hopping between a few worlds, hoping at last to find his way home. But rather than home, he found a stranger, a man who said some unsettling things.
"It is a long and lonely life that we live." he told Quen, "And dangerous, always fighting for our lives against the Heartless that are attracted to our weapons, to the Keyblade. They will not stop, even if you make it to your home, to your precious daughter... your presence will only consign her to danger. And what then? Leave to fight and consign her to the fate of awaiting a father who might not return? Distance yourself, she will hurt and grieve for a time, but will ultimately remain out of harm's way."
The man's name was Xehanort, and he vanished as mysteriously as he had appeared. Quentin felt crushed. Xehanort's words were in fact true, those creatures, the Heartless he called them, did always seem to follow Quen wherever he went. It was possible they would follow him home as well. He held a photo of himself and Vera, the two holding Webby's egg between them. He sniffed back tears, and made his decision... one he continues to regret even to this day nearly ten years later.
