I hadn't really thought it totally through, mostly just a fun idea I was playing with. Guess I'll go with my backup plan, a hydrofoil missile boat.

If you are looking for a small boat, I would recommend something along the lines of this Corvette.

Slightly smaller, at the moment I'm working off of an upsized Visby Class.

It should be large enough to travel long distance. That was why I suggested the Corvette.

I wish I knew, Wernher. Last clue she left was dealing with tensions with Russia and China.

A vanilla Visby class is about 10m longth than the Sa'ar 4.5 you recommended to Silverwind. I've bumped that up by another 8m to give an even 80 meters. Here's the sheet. I rather like how the lengthened Visby class looks, the original always looks a little stubby.

|Ship Name: HMCS Gander
|Ship Class: Gander Corvette
|Ship Hull Classification Symbol: K101
|Ship Role: Fast Attack, Anti submarine, Anti Aircraft
|Armament:

  • 16 cell VLS
    + 10 x RIM-174
    + 6 Tomahawk cruise missiles

  • 4 × quad Harpoon launchers

  • 1 x 57mm Bofors

  • 4 × 400 mm torpedo launchers

  • 2 x 20mm Phalanx CIWS

  • 1 x Zodiac RHIBs

|Dimensions: 81m length, 10.4m beam, 4.4m draft(1.4m on foils)
|Speed: 74 knots (137km/h)
|Crew: 45
|Motto: 'Volemus Ala' (With Wings We Fly)
|Other: Built by the Halifax Shipyards but based upon the Swedish Visby Class as a stealth technology testbed for the Royal Canadian Navy. The design was lengthened to add room for larger fuel stores and more interior space. Additional changes were made with the addition of a Phalanx CIWS and the change to more standard weapons. Hydrofoils were added giving it an exceptional top speed.

|Captain's Name: Riley Morrow
+Rank: Lieutenant-commander
+Appearance: Tall, 42 years old with greying hair and green eyes.
+Personality: Harsh would be one word to describe the captain. Not to say he isn't unfriendly, but reactions can quickly be taken to the extremes.
+Bio: A career sailor, he jumped at the chance to command a one of a kind warship. His life before the navy was unremarkable and forgettable. His life after joining the navy was anything but. After an incident aboard a Halifax class destroyer off the coast of Iraq that resulted in a report reading, 'Prone to moments of less than inspired thinking', he was reassigned to an over budget program and sent off on an exchange program to be someone elses problem.

|Name: James Murphy
+Rank: Lieutenant
+Role: Executive officer
+Appearance: Short with short, coal black hair and blue eyes.
+Personality: A little bit on the cautious side, he offests the Cpatains wild nature slightly.
+Bio: The son of an polititian, James always had safe, administrative jobs in the Navy. After a scandal involving an over budget program ruined his fathers career, he was sent to sea aboard the fruit of his fathers mistake and forgotten about.

That would be an inaccurate assumption. My mention of the USS Hermes is simply a statement of hope-filled optimism. :)

So, you're saying your "Captain" was a babysitter to age 16 and then 9 years later she was given command of a ship? Is that what you are asking?
When I was 25, I was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army, which is equivalent to an Ensign in the Navy. No one in their right mind would give an Ensign command of a ship at age 25. I know this is just an RP. The idea of a 25 year old command a ship in today's world, completely baffles me.

The size of your ship would dictate a Lieutenant Commander. To get to that rank, an officer would have to spend at least 12 years in the Navy before that happens, which would put her at 34 years old after four years in some commissioning source (college/university/military academy). The only thing nepotism does for a sailor or soldier is bring down a boat load of flak from subordinate.

I was no stud; no fast tracker. Obviously TheEvanCat's dad isn't either. Maybe that's what you are angling on? You want to be one of these individuals who hits all the promotions as early as possible? Sure, I can buy that. Afterall Lieutenant Decatur was promoted to Captain in the Navy after one raid at the age of 25. By the time he was 28, he was a commodore and commanded a squadron of frigates. But that was the 1804. The Navy has changed a little in the past 200 years.

In order to be commissioned in the US Navy one must complete a 4-year college program someplace, at some point. Assuming you graduate from HS at age 17, which is possible. My wife and I both graduated at age 17. Then spent the next four years in college, whether in ROTC or a Military Academy, you would be 21 upon graduation. Promotion on the fast track is 18 months from Ensign to Lieutenant Junior Grade and another 18 months from LtJG to Lieutenant (O3). So, that person would be 24 years old as a Lt in the Navy. The fastest a Lt. could be promoted to Lt. Commander is 4 years. So, then a 28 year old Lt. Commander for all of a few months until the birthday hits. But that is unfortunately unrealistic. It is a rare individual who hits all those thresholds. The norm is 22 at commision and promotion to full Lieutenant four years later, not three; 26 Yrs old as a Lt. Then promotion from Lt. to Lt. Commander can happen anytime between 4 and 9 years. 6 or 7 is the norm, which would put this person at Lt. Commander at age 32 or 33. From Lt. Commander to full Commander another five to eight years; age 38 - 41 and then another five to eight years to Captain; mid to late 40s. Once they hit Admiral, the promotions are political and can come fast for others, but stall for most. I knew General David Petraeus in 2001-02 when he was a Brigadier General (O7). He made it to 4-star General (O10) in just 7 years. He was a fast tracker and was a 4-star general at age 54. He retired at age 57. I know some generals who hang around well into their 60s, but like most fast trackers, to must exposure to the lime light will burn your butt.

Hey - I've been having severe internet problems over here and this is the first I've been able to get on. Hopefully it'll be fixed by Wednesday. I trust Gunther can get you guys out of port doing something at least a little bit interesting. Good luck, and hopefully I'll be back by Wednesday!

So what I'm basically getting from what you're saying, Gunther, is that Faye needs to be 35-40+ in order for her and the USS Hermes to be accepted.

My father isn't a hooah. He advises me not to be either. :P

However, he was also prior enlisted for four years after college, meaning that he was around twenty seven when he went to OCS.

I spent 5 years enlisted, then went to college and OCS. I was commissioned after 2 years of college in the reserves at age 23. But what your father did is normal. I knew a Master Sergeant (E8) who attended OCS and was a 2nd Lieutenant at age 32. That is rare. I retired at age 39 as a Captain (O3). I had a guy in my OCS class who was commissioned at age 19, but turned 20 a month later. That also is rare. He went to college and joined the guard right after HS. After one year, you can attend OCS, which is what he did. On another note, he was probably one of the worst Lieutenants to come out of our class due to his immaturity. There is a big difference between an 18 year old and 23 year old.

He was supposed to go to OCS right after college, but he told me that the recruiter fucked him over on that aspect. So there's that.
