When the Smoke Clears

Influences:
Dishonored, The First Law (Joe Abercrombie), Fable II & III, Thief, Victorian Age, Bas-Lag (China Miéville), common ‘steampunk’, …

General overview:
Focus of the RP is not to lose ourselves in game mechanics, instead this is a game of logic, reason and collaborative writing. Our goal is not to have an overly competitive game, but to immerse into a nice creative experience for all parties. We write a story with each other, not against each other.

Players are rather free to engage in their own sub-plots and character development. Though a setting and possible storylines are provided, participants are free to pursue their own course on the proviso it does not conflict with elements already in place.

The story will be set in a fantasty (pun intended) world -called Ardua- in the middle of, what we historically refer to as, an Industrial Revolution.

Rules and guidelines:

[*]GM is myself. Feel free to contact me whenever should you require assistance or information. GM has the final word in case of conflicts.
[*]Advanced standards; common sense approach; game of logic and collaboration.
[*]Character Sheets should be posted on the OOC (though they can be sent via pm as well) for approval/disapproval. Not all decisions will be made public.
[*]You are assumed to be an adult by submitting a character for this game; please act like one.
[*]Applications may take a few days before a decision can be made. Generally issues will be resolved over pm.
[*]Players are encouraged to be creative, and to be interactive with their fellow players on their own to plot. Take initiative.

IC information - setting:

Kingstone, capital of the United Kingdom of the Isles

Abercrose Square was largely deserted at this time of day. Few citizens dared venture out in a downpour such as this, especially not when the wind swept in the cold from the bay. Even though the waterfront was several blocks away and out of sight, the stones of Abercrose were being whipped by a merciless wind. Fortunately none of the smell reached the square.

Calwin Ruyne disembarked from the railway wagon, umbrella at the ready. Luckily the platform was inside of the train station so the roof shielded him from the rain. A sudden thought hit him in force. Not even ten years ago was the first time this big mechanical beast was put into use for the first time. Society had eagerly welcomed the invention, gratefully tolerating the crowded wagons as long as it shortened their commutes. Already it was unthinkable -even outright impossible- to remove the railway. The last four decades had seen a plenitude of scientific and technological breakthroughs. Progress they called it, but Calwin couldn’t help but see the analogy between society and a junky needing its next fix.

The age of industry had arisen from the workshops and factories of social pariahs called scientists and inventors. Factories had sprouted up like mushrooms, each producing more grime and muck than the last. Calwin thought them filthy, polluting the air, the water even the people working there. Everything was so crowded now as everyone came to live in the cities. The working class reminded him of squalor in need of nesting... First the area within the walls was filled up with brick housing, warehouses and industry. Afterwards the city had poured out in the countryside, like a popped boil.

Everyone, and he meant everyone, wanted to move forward, to discover new things. A better faster way of making money or living. Even a natural cynic as he, had to acknowledge the fact several inventions had caused an improvement in living conditions. Sadly, others negated those effects. Tooth paste for example: excellent for dental hygiene, the downsides were that it needed child labour forces and was a pricy commodity. Society and its paradoxes was what occupied Calwin’s mind as he made his way across Abercrose Square, avoiding puddles as he went. It would be a damn shame if his black shining leather boots got dirty.

Some 60 years ago the world experienced an earth-shaking socio-economic development that reshaped the balance of power. Unprecedented scientific and technological progress uplifted ancient societies in an era of prosperity as the power of steam was harnessed. No longer subject to the fickle means of natural energy coming from wind or water. Production and trade skyrocketed. Society evolved from rural to urban.

As an economical golden age dawned, other fields, from agriculture to transport, took advantage of the ever growing understanding and knowledge. The cascade of developments sent ripples through society’s structure. Nobility, clinging to ancient rights and prerogatives, increasingly finds itself toe-to-toe with the growing influence and wealth of the bourgeoisie and merchants. Industrialists, bankers and businessmen are organising themselves politically to defend their interests. However, they are not the only ones with a growing sense of identity and camaraderie. The lower classes, exploited by both, are forming farming and labour movements to make their voices heard. Several new ideologies and ‘-isms’ have reared their heads.

In an attempt to vent domestic issues, the advanced nations of Ardua look outside their borders. Some employ the technological advancements on a military level to safeguard their sphere of influence, while others take to the seas and the newly discovered continent of Pan-Dessia in order to deal with an exploding population. Relationships between the advanced nations have begun to erode quickly; free trade has been replaced by tariffs, regulation, and distrust.

With the increasing understanding of the workings of the world, religion has taken to provide either charity to the populace or pursue worldly goals to maintain its influence. Though the power of the Church and general faith is waning, it is still a considerable international powerhouse. Especially among the solace-seeking lower classes, stuck in the mud and grime of physical labour, the Church of the Maker has a strong following. They are not alone though seeking to capitalise influence in the ‘crowd’ and proletariat. Socialism and nationalism are finding a fertile soil to put down roots. Both are eagerly used in the pursuit of political goals. Additionally there are the urban cults and splinter groups. They range from the ridiculously harmless to the unsettling dangerous. Of course, there is the ever present smudge of crime, organised or not.

OOC information:
Technology is clearly of industrial age, generally steam-power based. Gunpowder exists as do ironclad ships and steamers. There is no flight except for hot-air balloons and small zeppelins. Electricity is only experimental.

Though we play in a custom created world, it is styled after our own. Similarities may incur and are mostly even encouraged for the safety they provide.

The United Kingdom of the Isles is the most dominant nautical power and industrialised nation. Clearly based on the British Empire, it is relatively small in size but has a large population. Other nations will be thought of and included further along the way. They will probably be styled after genuine contemporary nations.

There are several factions such as the government, nobility, mercantile class, lower class unions, clergy, criminal organisations,... However, that is not to say any of the aforementioned is a consolidated block on its own.

Some roles I can easily see being played are: politician (noble or merchant), banker, crime lord, high clergyman, inquisitor or constable, military, trader, celebrity (actor, artist, painter,...), spy, scientist, revolutionary voice, spokesman of a union, ... It's not an exhaustive list, obviously. There are almost endless possibilities.

At this point I am unsure where to place the players, though I have several ideas brewing. I have a few plots in mind, but am looking to include player characters as focal points in these.

Hi!

Repost of my CS:

Name: Aaron McScott
Age: 32
Profession/vocation: Mercenary/Man-for-Hire/’Criminal’
Affiliation: N/A
Skills:
-Educated; a result of the questionable circumstances of his birth.
-Skilled brawler; was trained as a boxer during his time in the Navy.
-Tinkerer; Aaron likes to fiddle with gadgets, and has found he has a knack for repairing clocks and other small gadgets. He also has a fascination with explosives and other more destructive inventions.
-Ex-Navyman; Having served in His Majesty’s Royal navy for nineteen years, Aaron knows how to handle himself in a fight. He’s skilled with a sword, and knows how to use a pistol or musket if he has to.
-Public Speaker: Aaron has a knack for inspiring those around him, and was occasionally used to boost morale by ships’ captains during long sea voyages while he was in the Navy.

Traits:
-Outgoing
-Easily amused
-A bit of a clown, but serious when the situation demands it.
-Stubborn - he likes to hold grudges.
-Very strongly opinionated.

Personality: Aaron is an easygoing, outgoing fellow - he’s always quick to offer a smile and a nod to those he passes in the street, and will almost always go out of his way to help those he deems in greater need than he. He’s stubborn, and will always stick to his morals; and, God help anyone who gets on the wrong side of him - he’ll do everything in his power to ensure that they regret making the decision to cross him.

However, born a bastard of a well-off nobleman, and denied the privileges that he would have had, had his parents’ union been legitimate, Aaron harbours a resentment for the nobility - and, ultimately, the monarchy. He deems the King and his Government unfit to run the United Kingdom, and is a strong believer in democracy - a belief that could possibly get him hung, if he was too vocal about it.

Biography: Aaron was born as a result of the illegitimate union between his mother, Nancy Scott - a serving wench in a Kingstone waterfront tavern - and his father, Lucian McLawrence - a highly respected, decorated and recognised nobleman and a high-ranking member of His Majesty’s Royal Navy. Lucian was a charming, kind-hearted fellow - who had the misfortune of being married to a woman whom he hated, and who was - in his own words - “committed to making his life a living hell.”

Aaron never knew his father, but his mother - still smitten, even though she had been left to raise a child on her own at the tender age of nineteen - always spoke of him fondly. Lawrence’s wife forbid him from ever meeting Aaron, but he did send - and continue to send, until Aaron’s eighteenth birthday - more than enough money for Nancy to provide Aaron with a comfortable upbringing if she continued working a few nights a week; something she was eternally grateful for, as she knew many women in the same position as her who did not receive the funds that she did.

Although his father was painted as a saint by his mother, Aaron despised him - and hated that, as he was always told, that he had his blonde hair and blue eyes. A troubled and angry child, Aaron was nothing but trouble for his loving, kind-hearted mother - whom he cared for greatly, even if he never showed it.

When he was thirteen, Aaron’s mother received a letter from Lawrence - requesting that Aaron join the Navy, and serve on his father’s vessel for a three-year long voyage. Aaron outright refused his father’s offer, but, with some persuasion from his mother, he was convinced to agree to join the Navy and serve on his father’s vessel; and bid his mother farewell in the sixth month of his thirteenth year.

Aaron served on his father’s vessel - one of the largest in His Majesty’s Navy - for three years, sailing around the world and doing battle with the United Kingdom’s enemies; and it was one of the best experiences of his life. When he returned home - no longer a troublesome boy but a disciplined young man - he was met with the sad news that his mother - always a fragile woman, although she’d never had admitted it - had passed away during his time away from home.

He was devastated, and arranged for his mother to be buried in a nearby cemetery after a few weeks of drunken grieving. Aaron immediately went back to the docks - and, now recognised as a relatively skilled sailor - and was hired on to another of His Majesty’s Vessels, and spent the next sixteen years of his life sailing around the world, serving the Navy.

Aaron rose through the ranks quickly (partially due to his father’s influence, behind the scenes, but mostly because of his own talent) and was at the rank of First Mate when he discharged himself from the Navy three months into his thirty-second year, upon his return to Kingstone from a particularly long seavoyage.

Name: Alberic Bourneham
Age: 34
Profession/vocation: Dyer, Trade Union Leader
Affiliation: Erdley Textile Workers Association
Skills:
- Dyeing textile; Unsurprising after working as a dyer.
- Operation and maintenance of steam-powered machinery; Equally unsurprising for a worker at his position.
- Understanding of chemistry; Though he could not finish his education, Alberic has a good grasp of the basics of chemistry.
- Organisation; Having been an integral part of the worker's union since its inception, his leadership and organisational skills have improved greatly.
- Literate; Unlike many of his colleagues, friends and compatriots, Alberic can read and write with ease.

Traits:
- Ambitious
- Impatient
- Charitable
- Uncompromising
- Opportunistic

Personality:
Outsiders and close friends alike will have a hard time figuring out what Alberic really thinks or feels. He is often straightforward to the point of being blunt, but this often sheds no light on his motives or true intentions. Alberic has a reputation of being uncompromising and impatient so it would surprise no one to find that he lied and manipulated to accomplish his goals. However, his concern for the lower classes and his hatred for the wealthy is doubted by no one. Having risen to the leadership position of the Erdley Textile Workers Association, Alberic is by no means satisfied. He is always looking for a chance to increase his leverage or consolidate his power so that in the times to come he would have more power to play or bargain with. Though he can be impatient and often acts on a whim, he has set his sights on greater issues than just the treatment of his colleagues at the factory. If it is up to him, his story is just beginning and his rise to the political stage just a matter of time.

Biography:
Working for a small pharmacy James Bourneham, father of Alberic, could afford a small house and maintain his wife and three children. The street Alberic and his two sisters grew up in was lined with the narrow brick houses that rose up in huge blocks on the outskirts of Kingstone. With the wages of both parents Alberic and his sisters all attended high school but had to work in the hours after school and in the weekends. There was little time for playing around but it was clear to Alberic, even at an early age, that his life was considerably more pleasant than that of many of his neighbours. Only a handful of children in the neighbourhood could afford attending school as most had to find employment to get bread on the table. Marcus, one of his close childhood friends, often shared stories about his work cleaning the machinery in a textile mill. However, over time the two grew apart as Alberic developed new interests and ideas while Marcus never seemed to talk about anything other than the gossip of the neighbourhood and accidents at the mill. Alberic felt he was destined for greater things than to be stuck in the squalor of a working class neighbourhood.

When he graduated from high school Alberic was sent off to university to study chemistry. At first the university was a symbol for intellectualism, sophistication and all the things he desired but could not find back home, but soon he found that nothing had changed. He found new friends but quickly saw that he did not belong. The gap between the rich and poor, even at the university was as clear as day. Gradually Alberic’s escapism changed into frustration and involved himself in social movements and political discussions. However, his new life ended abruptly when his father passed away suddenly and Alberic had to leave the university. Having lost the main source of income Alberic was forced to take a job as a dyer at a textile mill. The same textile mill where his childhood friends had worked for years.

His father’s death had been hard to deal and as time passed his sadness did not disappear but turned into anger. He felt he deserved more than this and as he looked at the plight of those around him knew that his colleagues deserved more too. Reunited, as fate would have it, with his old friend Marcus, Alberic shared his ideas of equality and change. Word spread and soon groups of people gathered to talk of work and politics. As the gatherings grew and Marcus reached out to his friends in other factories, the Erdley Textile Workers Association was created. For a while its leadership consisted of representatives of the factories, often old men who had been working at the mills for decades. Though the movement was growing and there was talk of strikes and sabotage, things were moving far too slow for Alberic. He felt that the old guard could not see the bigger picture and never hesitated to share this with his colleagues. Over the years his ideas of equality turned more radical and his thoughts on justice ever more violent. Ultimately Alberic volunteered himself to negotiate with the factory owners and became the de facto head of the association.

Name : Elijah Sebrill

Age : 28

Profession/Vocation : Librarian

Affiliation : Kingstone Royal Library

Skills : Organisation and administration, Book-keeping and filing

Traits : Cynical, Socially inept, Bookworm, Witty, Intelligent, Persuasive

Personality/Biography : Elijah is slow to make friends or trust anyone. He is a sociopath, preferring to be alone than out socialising, though with the few, if any, friends he has he can trustworthy and straightforward. He is excellent at his job, filing and lending books from the vast archives of the Royal Library situated just off Abercrose Square. In spite of his adept performance, he still draws only a meagre wage, and lives in a small, almost Spartan apartment on the verge of the Abercrose district and the Old Commons. He has few, if any friends, staying in the library long after hours. He was born into a family of the small but expanding middle class, his father a railway engineer and his mother a teacher. When he was 16, his father died in an industrial accident- his mother soon to follow him. She had lost the will to live. He was forced to leave school and find work, being engaged in a number of temporary occupations before being accepted as an apprentice librarian due to his natural intellect. Because of his incessant love of reading, he is quite knowledgeable on a vast variety of topics, expressing his views frankly when queried about them. How such a lowly character will be engaged in the critical coming years is as of yet undetermined.

Appearance : He has tightly cropped dark brown hair combed to one side, and a pair of deep, wary, piercing green eyes. His skin is pale due both to the smog of the Old Commons and the seclusion of the library. He is slightly above average height, and of a slim build.

(I hope my character is up to par. If not, I would be happy to make the necessary adjustments.)

Name: Adrianna St. Claire
Age: 32
Profession/vocation: Oil Tycoon / Investor
Affiliation: St. Claire Oil & Mining Company
Skills:

  • Persuasion/diplomacy: She is skilled at bargaining and negotiating, a result of many business dealings.

  • Wealth: She has a vast sum of wealth at her disposal.

Traits:

  • confident

  • selfish

  • obsessive

  • haughty

  • stubborn

Personality: Adrianna is a business woman, through and through. She is adept at putting up a show, acting polite and personable when it is to her advantage. But she is more naturally shrewd and prudent, refusing to compromise or settle in negotiations. While she may have the appearance of civility and charm, Adrianna is more often than not galled by most people and would rather be left to her own devices. Despite her fancy dresses or meticulously applied makeup she isn't very feminine in her mannerisms. In fact some would describe Adrianna as having a masculine aura about her.

Biography: Since the rise of steam and steel, the demand for previously worthless materials such as oil and coal skyrocketed. Like many others, Daniel St. Clair found his fortune through obtaining and selling such raw materials. St. Claire Oil & Mining Company, formerly St. Claire Oil Company, was originally a whaling company. The company managed a small group of boats, and the majority of profits came from whale oil. Over time stiff competition, decreases in the whale population, and an over-saturated market drove out all but the biggest and richest companies. St. Claire Oil Co. barely hung on, and was greatly overshadowed by larger companies. Daniel St Claire. became apathetic and felt content resting on his modest but respectable fortune.

An older Daniel St. Claire, with several children and a few divorces, decided to spend his last years and what was left of his fortune in bars and brothels. At some point he convinced himself he was in love with a prostitute who called herself Cinnamon, and whose birth name is Adrianna Plainview. One hasty wedding later Adrianna found herself a small fortune. And with her new husband's health failing, she effectively had total control of his company. Within the span of a few short years, Adrianna shifted the company away from the dwindling whale oil market and towards oil drilling on land and mining ores and other raw materials. St. Claire Oil & Mining reached a new level of success. And with her newly self-made wealth, Adrianna starting investing huge sums into new energy sources. While not as large as other competitors, Adrianna is determined to make St Claire Oil & Mining Company an unstoppable giant.

Name: Nicholas Cotterhill
Age: 31
Profession/vocation: Inventor/Pilot
Affiliation: n/a
Skills:

  • Mechanical proficiency

  • Works well with animals

  • Invented the zeppelin (knows mechanics inside and out)

Traits:

  • Observant

  • Socially awkward

  • Wealthy (if it counts)

  • Enthusiastic

Personality:
Nikolas seems like a stereotypical eccentric. He has strange habits, a sleeping schedule like a bat, and excogitative. After his success with inventing, the reclusive, socially inept emerged from the safe haven of his estate to mix with the aristocratic society of Kingstone. Adjustment to strange etiquette standards became a daunting task, leaving him often making movements and speaking phrases out of the ordinary for the rich and powerful.

Biography:
The base of Nikolas' lavish and erratic lifestyle was not that of a normal well-to-do young man. He was born out of wedlock in the countryside of Wrenscote. Often ignored and left alone by his low-middle class parents, Nikolas turned to tinkering as a source of entertainment in his childhood. He began to experiment with all sorts of steam-powered devices. He also became captivated by wildlife, particularly the local avian population. Much of his time was spent either with tools in a field or a pencil and pad in a field.

Nikolas endeavored in the area of flight mechanics. He was amazed by the views of hot air balloons that rarely floated in the clear skies above the fields at his home. By the age of 19, he had managed to piece together a vehicle of the sky. He called it the "steam-propelled gas balloon". Early attempts at selling the machine were in vain, as locally the invention seemed to have no purpose and was generally a waste of space and materials. In his early twenties, Nikolas loaded his possessions and rations into his balloon prototype. He lifted it into the air, taking flight all the way to Kingstone, where he managed to successfully land his apparatus outside of the city. This attracted a lot of attention to the design, and soon orders for these balloons, nicknamed "zeppelins" due to the buzz-hum of the steam engine, flooded in. Nikolas bought a large amount of land just outside of the city, having a large estate built for himself. The most notable part of this extravagant house is the aviary, a large glass dome connected to the mansion, with a sprawling tree in the center.

Because of his successes and newfound wealth, Nikolas began to socialize with the rich and famous of the city. His invention secured him a position with the Union's Department of War, where he helps oversee the design, manufacturing, and maintenance of armed zeppelins for war times.

Almost done, I swear!

Name
Maryia Sparrow. Family and close friends call her Masha though.

Age
Twenty-four

Profession/vocation
'Socialite', though really 'social scandal' is a more aptly applied term. Information gather in reality. Though were that information goes...

Affiliation
Herself, because absolutely no one is more important than her.

Skills
Well read, well spoken, fluent in a number of languages. Highly persuasive

Traits
Narcissistic, petty on occasion, stubborn, strong willed, manipulative, defiant. But on a flip of a coin she's just as flirty and sweet, innocent even. Whatever she needs to be to get things done.

Personality

Name
Vance Sparrow

Age
Twenty-nine

Profession/vocation
Shipping empire CEO, Sparrow's Flight: Shipping Management Company

Affiliation
Sparrow's Flight

Skills
Quick judge of character, fast on his feet in a fight

Traits

Personality
Cold and calculating, Vance is the near embodiment of a ruthless businessman.

Biography
The only two living children of Vance and Alexandra Sparrow. Their father built up the little company that his father had started into an empire, buying (and sometimes blackmailing) his way into social influences and business deals. Alexandra died when Vance was ten, Maryia five despite the best efforts of their doctors and healers and the prayers of her children. The elder Vance raised his children through tutors and nannies, remaining the cold and distant man he'd always been and hardly acknowledging his children't grief.

When Vance was old enough, his father took him under his wing, in a business sense, and taught him all he needed to know. He worked as his father's second in command until a few years ago when the elder Vance took suddenly ill and passed on, leaving his boy in control of the vast empire they'd built. And things seem to just keep going up for them.

While Vance was being taught in the ways of business, Masha was leaning how to be a lady. Which she hated every second of and would ditch out of her governesses care at any opportunity. She followed her brother around like a little puppy, picking up on what she could through him. Which is a skill she still uses as an adult.

Business flourished under the elder Vance's control and things were looking very well for them, moving up the social ladder and everything. But quiet suddenly, the pairs father took ill and passed before it could be found what was wrong with him. Rumors circulated for a while that perhaps one, if not both of his children had a hand in his untimely death, but as of yet nothing has been proven on that front and they have both been cleared of any wrong doing.
