A Day in Piltover University
I am Lochlainn Alberich, from the Phelan Clan of Piltover. I was raised at the central part of Piltover. Both of my parents were Merchants, and I don't want to be Merchant after I graduate. How I wish to become Traveler one day, unveiling the wonders and secrets of this mystical world of Runeterra.
PILTOVER CREST
Piltover is a thriving, progressive city whose power and influence is on the rise. It is Valoran’s cultural center, where art, craftsmanship, trade and innovation walk hand in hand. Its power comes not through military might, but the engines of commerce and forward thinking. Situated on the cliffs above the district of Zaun and overlooking the ocean, fleets of ships pass through its titanic sea-gates, bringing goods from all over the world. The wealth this generates has given rise to an unprecedented boom in the city’s growth.
Piltover has - and still is - reinventing itself as a city where fortunes can be made and dreams can be lived. Burgeoning merchant clans fund development in the most incredible endeavors: grand artistic follies, esoteric hextech research, and architectural monuments to their power. With ever more inventors delving into the emergent lore of hextech, Piltover has become a lodestone for the most skilled craftsmen the world over.
I am always fond of reading books, the books that keep my eyes wide-open to the reality of my world, the adventures of well-known heroes and person. I lived with my parents at Piltover, but I never had that satisfaction or contentment. I always wanted to be something unique and... maybe cool. Though my family (Phelan Clan) are known Merchants in the region, it didn’t help. I know to myself that it will never be part of my plan and of my life. I felt like I was wired with the destiny that I will be Merchants just like my parents one day. But one day, I decided to cut loose, build my own path, and make my own rules.
On the day at the Piltover University, I’ve been thinking about a lot of things lately. I’m that kind of person who overthinks a lot. Well, I must say, I’m not perfect at all, but it keeps on driving me crazy. I went to the University Library, of course to read books of old. By that time, I sat on the nearest table near the book shelf. I tossed the book on the table that creates a bit of noise.
BANG!
“Shhhhh,” The old lady librarian give me a strange look from her desk.
“Sorry,” I said in a small voice. “Now, let’s see what I’ve got here” I said, looking on the books I took. “The books of prominent people and their odyssey, oh boy!” in a low voice, “…soon I will be one of them, and my name will be on that list.” I whispered, full of hope and faith while looking at the pictures. I just believe I can be like them. Then I started imagining and day-dreaming about myself on a great expedition with my friends Raild and Levar, seeing the bigger picture.
In a short while, light broke the moment when my colleague called me, “Herr Lochlainn! Professor Temarr is ‘bout to start. Pack your things and Hurry!” pointing at the direction to the room.
“Oh! Y-yesss. I’m on my way,” I answered, pressing forward.
I’m already on my seat and Professor Temar started his discussion about Hextech and some sort of things.
“Hextech… it is one of the greatest and well-known discovery of Piltover. Invented by the greatest minds of Piltover, our founding fathers, yes!” Professor Temarr explained in a loud voice, enough to fill the room. “It is elemental and spirit magic combined with technology; Invented and largely used in Piltover and areas of Piltovan influence, Brackern Crystal are integral in creating authentic Hextech devices…” He shook and points out his finger at the board.
Suddenly, Professor Heimerdinger break into the room and interrupts Professor Temarr in his discussion, “Indeed! Herr Temarr, children of Piltover, one of its abilities is to animate and empower technological devices as a fuel source, as well as prolong lifespan.” Speaks in bright and yordlely voice.
“Oh yes! Gentlemen, Professor Heimerdinger!” Temarr exclaimed, looking at Professor Heimerdinger on eyes-wide open.
It’s the first time I saw the Professor, I’ve read a lot ‘bout him and his intricate and neurotic obsession in technologies and nerdy stuffs. Well, they say he was famous in his contribution to the hextech and scientific community, and unbelievably he was a Yordle scientist in Piltover. I mean not surprisingly, he’s too bright about his ideas and invention concepts, qualified to contribute to Piltover who also embraced over years and years of inventions and technology, driven like their lifestyle.
“Tomorrow morning children, we will show the citizens of Piltover the power of invention. Be proud children of science… Oh boy! Can’t wait…” Professor Heimerdinger announce and leaves the room in a rush.
“Okay then, gentlemen…” Professor Temarr continues to discuss.
Now that they mentioned about Hextech. I’m a bit getting interested on the ‘Brackern Crystal’ Curiously, I was thinking far more than that.
Within seconds, the bell rang, ‘class is over’.
“Okay! Looks like we’ve been into some sorts of deep knowledge and excellent Hextech discussion today. So do we… let’s call it day gentlemen.” Professor Temarr gave smile to the class, as he put down the book.
A sudden noise inside the hall augments, chattering all-over the place. I decide to stay inside until my colleagues’ leaves the venue empty, to ask Professor about few things. Few-at-a-time, everyone departs the room. Professor Temarr and I was left inside the hall. I did make my way down the aisle to Professor Temarr.
“Herr Lochlainn of Phelan Clan, how do you do?” Professor Temarr asked while cleaning up his desk.
I replied, “I-I’m fine professor… I just wanted to asked ‘bout something, would you mind my dear professor?”
He paused for a moment and still said nothing, even gave me a strange look. I wondered if he was mad at me or what he’s thinking.
“No… not at all, w-what is it in your mind?” Temar said, reading my mind.
“I just wanted to know… where does Brackern Crystal came from.” I asked curiously and sounded serious, too serious. Just as serious as I look at Professor Temarr.
Professor Temar paused for a moment, and looks at me with full of oddness. I’m not so sure what does he think about me, but I’m in a cold sweat, like did I say something wrong? or is it too confidential that no one should know about? I laid back and avertedly speak, “Professor, if it’s impossible to be told or perhaps confidential, that’s fine with me. I won’t insist”
“No, look Loki my boy, I was just thinking, why so serious about this? you really wanted to know, do you?” Temar oddly asked. “Well… yes? If you don’t mind to…” I quickly responded.
“Through my entire life as professor here, this is the only time I met someone like you who genuinely puts his interest to asked that kind of question…” he dropped down his thing at the table and continues to speak,"…but let me tell you this. There are many rumors around the city about its origin of Brackern Crystal. Take a seat first.” I grab a seat and sat down near the table.
“There are different stories where Hextech or Hexcrystal started. According to the lore, the Clan Ferros produces these crystals for their devices. Other story says, it is a discovery from Clan Giopara from their expedition to Shurima that they found the Brackern crystals, they don't know how to use it and they start believing that it's just a normal paint blue rock. However, Jayce manage to unlock the crystal potential. That’s what the story said, but I don’t believe in any of those.” He stood up, finished the story, and leaves the room. I paused and leaned back at my seat, lingered over the story, trying to unsolved the mystery of Brackern crystal silently.
