Modern day Kansas City, Missouri. A burg with an irresistible mix of small town charm and big city class, right in the middle of the country. A decent football team, several universities, a vibrant nightlife, and beautiful downtown studded with fountains and upscale shopping. Quiet and respectable, right?
You might be mistaken.
Despite what the tourist brochures might say, the Paris of the Plains (or KC, as the locals call it) has one hell of a seedy underbelly. Missouri's dubious honor of being "America's Meth Capital" has resulted in a violent street-level drug trade, the growing interest in urban renewal has led to bitter wars over real estate, and the after hours crowd always needs a little pharmaceutical help. Not to mention all the usual sort of crime that goes on in any large American city.
The major players all have their own rough territories. Cossacks MC, a one-percenter motorcycle gang, generally runs in the outskirts and surrounding rural area, particularly around the I-70 corridor. Inside the city, the low-income East Side is a warzone between the black Army Ants and Hispanic Los Conquistadores. Just over the border, in the historic Strawberry Hill district of Kansas City, Kansas, is the Croatians. And, of course, organized crime in KC comes in the classic flavor. The Cipriano family has long been one of the top operators for the Mafia. Let's make no bones about it, the Ciprianos merely tolerate the presence of other gangs.
So who's missing?
The Irish.
KC, as you should very well know, is home to nearly a quarter of a million Irish Americans. They used to be a major player- hell, back in the Thirties Tom Pendergast practically ran the town, even getting Harry Truman started. But somewhere along the way, they became respectable.
And so the story takes us to a handful of lowlifes, experienced but only moderately successful criminals, running or frequenting an Irish pub by the name of Fiddler's Green. You know the type of place- Guinness on tap, the Pogues on the jukebox, run by people who have never been to Ireland and likely never will. They're a disparate bunch, unified only by real or imagined Irish ancestry, a history of petty offenses, and ambition.
Together, they're going to build the new Irish Mob.
So, I hope that little bit of flavor text did something for you. Players will be Irish-Americans in Kansas City looking to make a name for themselves in organized crime, connected through the bar mentioned above.
For this RP, I'm going to try to avoid the common mistake of hitching everyone's wagon to one character, which has killed a few very good RPs. This group of criminals is going to start off confused and anarchic. This gives room for a clear leader to emerge from among the players- which really should be part of the fun.
Anyone interested? Anyone need clarification on anything? Just let me know, either in this thread or via PM.
