Personality:
Studious and hard-working, Cody always looks to give everything he does his all. Whether it be protecting someone with his magic, learning something new or simply trying to help someone carry a pile of heavy books up a flight of stairs, Cody is always looking to help. A strong stubborn streak and a constant strive for improvement is what drives Cody, a deep rooted fear of failure helping in that regard as he never wants to let alone else down again.
Despite his best efforts to emulate the cool nature of his mentor James, Cody is still very much susceptible to impulsive, often idiotic, moments which can land himself in dangerous situations, especially if those he cares about are in danger themselves. Often, he will interfere or stick his nose where it doesn’t belong, having to suffer the consequences. Although every now and again, he can hear a dark voice inside his head, whispering sweet temptations which he ignores for the best part, though he is completely unaware of what causes these little episodes.

Magic: Absolute Defense
A form of defensive magic passed down from one user to the other in the form of a magic grimoire, each with the aim to take it to a level above the previous owner. The book is enchanted with an unknown spell that only allows the current wielder to be able to read and understand the contents, and even then it’s written almost in a strange code to the wielder, to anyone else it’s just a blank and empty tome. The tome itself is unremarkable in appearance, only the size of a normal novel and leatherbound. The only thing that really stands out is words ‘Absolute Defense’ boldly embroidered in bright gold lettering. Despite its small stature, even during the 9 years the book has been in Cody’s care, he has yet to fully understand or learn all of its contents.
What Cody has been able to gleam however is that while the magic predominantly revolves around defensive spells, obviously, namely barriers. On a basic level, the user is able to create a barrier anywhere within his field of vision almost instantaneously, the strength of which varies based on the experience of the user, their concentration and how much time they are given to create said barrier. A barrier made in the heat of the moment paling in comparison to one given an hour to create for example. The size of the barrier can also be vastly increased given the time, where-as the ones Cody is able to summon upon a whim are more the size of Kite shields, or tower shields if he really exerts himself, where-as with time, patience and a large chunk of magic, he would be capable of creating one to defend an entire city. While the creation of barriers may seem limited, what really makes Absolute Defense shine is the ability for the user to manipulate the properties of their barriers.
Properties being what exactly the barrier does and is made out of, and in tandem with Magia, Cody’s list of properties is enlarged further. Currently the properties he is able to create are as follows:
Standard: Stock standard physical barrier
Rubber: The barrier becomes harder to use blunt force to break through, more flexible and able to also slingshot attacks back the way they came.
Bouncer: Attacks that hit this barrier are caused to bounce off of it and lose most of their force, for melee attacks causing a jarring feeling upon contact
Elemental: By absorbing residual elemental attacks using Magia, Cody is able to create barriers such as a flaming barrier, a ice barrier, etc, each one with their own unique effect such as burn for fire, harder for iron, etc. With more training his goal is to be able to do this without the aid of Magia by utilising the elements around him, or utilising the elements of those he meets.
-Elemental: Holy: After training with his mentor, James Avanlane, for the majority of the two year skip, Cody is able to add the holy/divine property to his barriers. Besides acting as a particularly useful flashlight, due to it glowing with divine energy when produced, it’s also used to help ward off ‘evil’ beings, spirits and the like
Springboard: A shield imbued with a similar property to Bouncer, but this one when hit creates a force of energy that pushes things back. Can also be used to launch things about 10 feet in a direction with a hastily created shield, or with more planning about to 100 feet.
Rock-Solid: A thicker barrier which is particularly useful against piercing or slashing attacks
Multi-Layered: As the name suggests, he is able to create multiple barriers atop of one another. While it’s far easier to stack multiple with the same property, Cody is able to stack ones with different properties to try and gain the desired combination. At the moment, he is able to stack 3 of a single type of barrier atop another, or 2 different ones.
Later Properties:
Sticky: His shields become coated in a thick, gooey substance that catches attacks. Weapons or even fists/limbs can get stuck when striking a barrier imbued with this property.
Spiked: A normal barrier, but spikier.
Thorns: Upon first glance, it appears as a normal barrier, however upon striking the barrier, whomever is attacking it is suddenly struck down by a pain equal to a ⅕ of the power of their attack originally.
Reflection: While useless against melee or melee weapon based attacks, a barrier imbued with this property can reflect a energy based, or most projectile attacks, back at the way it came.
Refraction:
Sharpened: Makes the barriers sharper
Absorbtion: Only able to use on ranged beam or energy based attacks, this property does exactly as one might expect; it absorbs a certain amount of an attack. How much of the attack the shield can absorb is based on a combination of the strength of the attack, it’s caster and how much magical energy Cody uses on the shield.
Deflection: Similar to the reflection property, though rather than be redirected towards the caster, this property redirects an attack off to the side.
Mix&Match: Not a property persay, but more once this stage has been achieved, Cody will be able to combine multiple properties into one barrier.
Concentration: The ability to make smaller, far more concentrated barriers upon fixated points, or simply making barriers stronger in one spot than the rest.
Other later spells include:
Absolute Territory
Absolute Armour
Absolute Fortress

Holy Magic: Light of the Protector
Although a novice, through his training over the last couple of years with James, Cody was able to obtain his own brand of Holy magic to compliment his barrier magic and swordplay. While mostly inexperienced with this magic, more using it in tandem with his Absolute Defence for additional effects and combos, or infusing his sword strikes with divine energy, he is able to do a few more generic holy magic spells.
Spells:
Flash: A brief flash of light erupts from Magia, or any item Cody is holding at the time, helping to blind a foe.
Holy Slash: By imbuing Magia with holy energy, he is able to increase the strength and power of his attacks. Particularly useful against
Stabilizing Touch: Requiring Cody to keep his concentration and hands on an ally, he is able to keep even those on death's door alive. Though at this stage he is yet to be able to heal their wounds, it’s useful to stall for time till a proper healer can make their way over.
Marked: With a touch, Cody is able to place a magical ‘marker’ on a target. Anyone with said Marker will feel a magical inclination to attack Cody, even if he wasn’t their target, allowing him to draw foes off his allies. He is also able to track their movements while within a 25 meter radius of him.

Magia Blade:
A holder magic sword that Cody purchased in Crocus during the GmG. A rather plain looking longsword, it has 5 runes separately etched across the entirety of the sword. Each one has a separate effect and, when in use, glows brightly in a different colour. Multiple runes can be used at a time
Ruby: A rune engraved upon the hilt. When activated, it glows a dark ruby red and allows the sword to return to it’s designated owner
Sapphire: A rune engraved upon the crossguard. If the blade becomes shattered/broken, then this rune will light up as a sapphire blue and the sword will become whole with time, quickened if the owner sacrifices some of their magic power.
Topaz: A rune engraved upon the blade itself, though closer to the crossguard. When in use, a soft topaz gold colour is emitted and it allows the user to save some residual magic from an opponent's attack to add to their own.
Emerald: A rune engraved near the tip of the blade. Upon activation, it’ll begin releasing a soft emerald green coloured light, allowing the user to use the sword as a throwing weapon, becoming more weighted like a dagger.
Amethyst: Engraved across the ‘back’ of the crossguard, this rune works in that the brightness of the amethyst light it emits changes while in use. Though it’s use is far more trivial than the others, being that it glows brighter when pointed in the direction of the owner's designation/target, or lighter if not. It does not work if the ‘target’ at hand is a person though.

History:
With his earliest memories being raised in an orphanage, Cody has never met nor even know who his real parents were. The only thing he was ever able to gleam from the orphanage was that his parents died in an accident and he had been placed in their care by the appropriate authorities. At least until he was 8, when he was adopted by a wealthy family known as the Bloodstein’s, who raised him to never use violence as the answer to anything and let him run around the mansion pretty much as he pleased. Despite this freedom, which he was unused to, to explore the mansion, he instead found he loved their extensive library and spent most of his days there reading.
Whether it was fantastical stories of grand adventurer, children’s story and picture books, he even began to read some tomes on the history of Fiore, of magic and even those of the family’s bloodline. Eventually after a couple of years living at the mansion, during one of his reading sessions he came across a curious little book, no bigger than a journal, bound with leather and clipped shut, looking rather worse for wear. Time had not seemed to treat the book well, yet Cody still unclipped the book, though at first was puzzled by the seemingly blank pages. Puzzled even more when strange symbols seemed to just...appear. All he had done was blink, and suddenly every page was covered in these unknown symbols.
Putting the strange book back, it wouldn’t be long before he would find himself drawn back to it. As if under the influence of an invisible force, he couldn’t help but open the strange book once more. And again. And again. Every day for about a year he would find himself drawn back to the book, soon beginning to get a grasp on how to read it. Though much to his confusion, when he brought this book to his foster parents to ask about it, they would just ask him why he brought them a blank journal. Though it was also because of this they were more than happy to let him keep it.
In secret the young Cody soon began to realise that the books contents spoke of a rare, lost magic which he would soon begin to practice. It was hard at first, especially so seeing as he would do so in private and completely self taught. He would sneak out at night, to a grove in the middle of the nearby woods and just drain himself of every last bit of magic and concentration he could squeeze out of himself before heading home. It became easier as time went on and he began to not only get the hang of his newfound powers, but also began to decrypt more and more of the journal. While he had yet to learn the identity of the writer, he had at least learned that this tome would only reveal its contents to one who it deemed ‘worthy’, though the criteria behind meeting this worthiness was unknown to him.
All while this was going on behind closed doors and out of sight of his foster parents, he would continue to blossom and grow from their loving nurture and care. While they were probably guilty of doting on him too much, they seemed more than happy to so long as it made the young boy happy. Whether it was more books for him to indulge in, or the day they took him to a play on the events of Zeref and his wicked dragons that tried to destroy Fiore a century ago. Though they were protective of him, perhaps overly so, so he rarely got to meet anyone his own age, instead being home schooled by tutors hand picked by his guardians to further his education how they saw fit.
Eventually though his foster parents caught him in the act of his magic casting, when he instinctively used it to protect a household servant from a falling pile of books at the age of 15. Fearing punishment, he fled to the woods despite his parents pleas to stay and talk. This would be the last time he saw them alive. It was a dark, starless night that fateful day as he slowly trudged back, afraid of the punishment he would receive. He wasn’t even sure what they would be madder about, his ability to use magic, his secret training of the magic, or the fact he ran away. Though the combination of the three would surely weigh on his mind.
An eerily quietness was all that greeted him however, a sinking feeling settling in on the boy as he felt a sense of dread overcome him. What happened next...Cody doesn’t like to recall. The household servants, their demise gruesome and cruel. His parents? He was unable to protect them despite his best attempts. And during the struggle that ensued when the attackers tried to capture, or kill he wasn’t sure, the teenager, the mansion caught ablaze. Cody never escaped the blaze, only barely surviving due to sheer willpower and his last remaining ounce of magical energy. But by then, what he would later find out was a dark guild that had attacked the mansion were long gone, obviously believing he had perished in the inferno.
And perhaps he may still yet have perished, if not for the good folks of a nearby town. The Bloodsteins had always been good to the town, eager to do trade with them and helping fund any projects, so when the sheer quantity of smoke had began to envelop the area, they had rallied a group to go to their aid...but they arrived too late, except to help the remaining survivor in Cody. Once Cody recovered, he thanked the townsfolk and soon vanished, leaving behind the majority of the remaining assets of the family. They weren’t his to keep from his view, he wasn’t of the Bloodstein’s flesh and blood. He was sure his parents would rest easy knowing that he used the majority of it to pay back the town for saving him, only keeping a small portion of his own to be able to get by for awhile.
For the next two years, he would travel around Fiore. Honing his magic all the while, he soon began to come across more and more mages, who he would go to to gleam whatever trade secrets he could of the craft of magic, anything to help him grow stronger. Though it took a longer for him to recover mentally from the ordeal, keeping himself away from others for the most part, unless it was to do a odd job for cash or a mage for advice, in fear of growing too close to them and suffering the fate of those at the mansion if the dark guild ever caught wind of his survival.
It wasn’t until he had a close encounter with some bandits that he realised that his own methods of self teaching his magic could take him so far. Reluctantly, he headed to Crocus upon word spreading of the return of the Grand Magic Games. More so to suss out which guild would fit right to join to help advance his use of magic, though in hindsight there was only one that would ever catch his eye….Phoenix Wing.
He had heard of the rambunctious guild during his travels, of the various rumours that began to spread about them and the gossip that accompanied with a guild on the rise. Not all were exactly positive, but upon reaching Crocus and meeting a few of the members, he had finally come to his decision. Well, the first meeting with some of those members was rather rocky...he had been passing by when a fight had broken out between two girls, Marlene and Ariel, and he had thrown himself in between them as it was obvious that Ariel had little interest in fighting. Once a couple more members intervened and got Marlene to calm down, he would return with them to the hotel to become a member proper. This was also the first time he met his future mentor, known to him at the time as James Hunt.
A lot would happen to Cody in a short frame of time from then on. He would meet Amaya Van Isis, almost immediately falling for her, would nearly die...twice in two days as he finally clashed with the dark guild from his past, Shadow Heart, as they at first came for the grimoire for Absolute Defence, and then later Amaya for her slayer magic. He would also become a target for a particular wizard from that dark guild, Nidhogg, who had taken an interest in him. He would also save Jasmine Lockwood, along with James and a man by the name of Levi, from the grasps of a...moth and butterfly person? He would also become the pupil to James, be targeted once more by a Shadow Heart member looking to manipulate his overwhelmed mental state and come to grips with his own powerlessness to stop any of this from happening.
All in the space of 3 or 4 days.
The next couple of months by comparison were an absolute cakewalk. Despite the harsh training he would undergo with James, both physically, mentally and magically pushing him to his limits, he wouldn’t give in. Though he was plagued by constant nightmares during this, he didn’t let it get to him as once he felt he was ready, he took a quest for him and James to go on to test his progress while the others went to Tenrou. It was during this quest that Cody would confront James about some of his problems, his inner demons of his fear of failing to protect those who he holds dear, and his confusion over his feelings for Amaya.
With a clearer mind after their little heart to heart, Cody would accompany James on his return to his parents to continue his training with a new found purpose/goal in mind. He would become strong enough to protect Amaya and be worthy of being by her side, deciding not to see her until that time came.
Upon his return to the guild-hall, he was confronted by Ethel Storm, who seemed convinced that he was her long lost half-brother, despite also claiming to have never met him prior. Her only arguments being that he physically reminded her of her father, and a gut feeling. Though Cody keeps refuting the claim, he would begin to grow fond of the younger girl as she would visit him and tend to him after his training with James.
It was only until about a month or so ago that he finally felt comfortable enough with his progress to finally confront Amaya, though it was more a swearing of fealty to protect her as her shield rather than a proper confession. It would also spell the end to the most part of his apprenticeship under James, though he would continue to spar with the older man and catch up with his mentor for advice or just a chat whenever he could.

Appearance:
Additional Details:
Carries around a variety of items, both magical and not, such as smoke bombs, flash bangs, some coloured beads and marbles, a few one-off effect lacrima (which are consumed when thrown, creating effects like a splash of fire), a spare ordinary magic sword and a small drawstring bag that is magically enchanted with a miniature pocket dimension, allowing it to store more than it’s meagre size would suggest.
His body is covered in scars and burn marks from the fire that enveloped his foster family’s mansion
Character Relations:
Amaya Van Isis: Perhaps no one on this earth is dearer to him than Amaya. She was one of the first guild members he met after joining the guild, and he would do anything in his power to protect her.
Joshua: While he holds a certain amount of respect for Joshua, he doesn't like him though for what reason he can't quite explain why. Though perhaps it's more accurate to say they're rivals rather than allies.
Cecilia: Seems to be on surprisingly amicable terms with the exceed, who seems to have taken a liking to sit on his head, not that Cody minds much.
James Avelane: His mentor and perhaps the person he respects most outside of Jamie or Jarvis. He feels like he owes James a debt that cannot be repayed through normal means, having forged a very close bond with him during their time together and would help the older man at the drop of a hat if he asked.
Ethel Storm: Despite his continuous refutes at her claims of being her older half-brother, he seems to have taken a liking to the younger girl and humors her little story now.
