No I get that, don’t worry. It’s just that I want to make sure I’m not making a character built around the concept of hunting, cooking and eating fantasy monsters, or using their body parts to make new equipment Monster Hunter style, if actually doing that kind of stuff would make him a terrible evil person, you know?

You know, it's funny you should mention that, because I recently toyed with a story recently involving that very concept. People were enslaving and eating fantasy creatures, and it never occurred to them that it might be wrong, because they didn't see their victims as people. They dragged the summoned Chosen Hero into eating such things, and when he later realized what he'd done, it became something of a defining moment for him.

The story never left my head because it felt too preachy, but I think the idea still has its merits if you'd like to explore it.

I mean, idunno. It’d definitely take a lot of the fun out of the cooking stuff though, and might actually straight up taint cooking for him altogether. My idea is that he’s actually a very nice person, even though genetics has made it so he looks and sounds like he wants to murder you at any given moment.

Or alternatively, I’ll just reincarnate him as a goblin, unite the goblin tribes and drag the entire race kicking and screaming into a new golden age of peace and prosperity.

Hm, that's very true.

There's a few aspects to consider. First, all the other monsters are, despite their human-level sapience, still different species. Humanity is no stranger to eating intelligent animals, of which pork is a prime example. And we're not wholly averse to using parts of our own species for irreverent uses; human bones are a preferred instrument in leatherworking, for example, and some of the modern stem cell research uses aborted human embryos. And, whether the monsters have human-sapience or not, everything's fair game when they're out for your blood. You gotta defend yourself.

Now, all that said, that the monsters are "humans in different bodies" is merely headcanon. Current literary convention has the different species at different levels of sapience, which is inconsistent with broad-spectrum humanity. So at most, I could see there being an in-universe conversation about the morality of eating creatures with sapience approaching ours, but at the end of the day, they're not (considered?) human.

Yeah, I think at the end of the day, he probably draw the line at eating anything thats capable of asking him to stop. Or at least anything that does ask him to stop. If he can feel justified in killing it and it doesn’t look humanoid, I guess he’d probably be fine with it. Still a more than decent chance I’ll do the goblin thing anyway now though. One half Ratatouille, the other half Oda Gobunaga.

I should probably point out that the monsters named so far aren't an exhaustive list of all the ones on the planet, but just a list of the sapient ones. The less intelligent monsters with no humanoid sapience don't organize themselves into anything so advanced, and are mentally incapable of joining the Zodiac Tribes. So there's probably lots of monsters out there he could cook and eat without worrying too much. It's like you said, if it can ask you to stop, you probably shouldn't eat it.

If you choose to go the goblin route, be an Uruk. They're one of the biggest and most dominant groups of the Cancer Tribe, and I've got some fun stories charted out for them.

Yeah, I did consider being an Uruk at first, because the original plan was actually just going to be Orcs before I saw we were doing the pig version of them, but now I’m leaning towards just normal goblins. They’re weaker, so they’ve gotta be clever to build an actual civilisation that won’t just get crushed immediately by the other, stronger races. Another idea would’ve probably just been a Kobold doing the same thing. I am still in the early planning phase though, so might still possibly end up doing an Uruk.

Also yeah cool! That’s mostly what I was asking about with all the ‘which monsters are sentient’ stuff anyway. I’m especially interested in things like hydra, because an animal that grows part of it back any time it’s cut off would be a great farm animal, assuming it can be caught and pacified.

If I read everything right, then I will have to withdraw, at this juncture, because I work a five-on/two-off schedule as a manager at my job; averaging 42~45 hours a week from 7(.5) to 9 hour days. So, even if I wanted to, I couldn't maintain a daily posting speed with a paragraph minimum. I'm just too exhausted.
