1922

No one is sure how it occurred. The dawn of the 20th Century was one marked by great fanfare. It was the start of a new tomorrow for both the old world as well as the old and yet, it also saw a time of uncertainty. The death of Queen Victoria, the beginning of Women's suffrage, the rise of new technologies such as the Motor Car, The electric Lamp and the Telephone, Motion Pictures, Einstein's theory of relativity and new tastes in fashion, music and art came into being. The New Century was looking to be the dawn of a new age of wonders.

Then came the war. The Lost Generation...

A feeling of utter hopelessness swept across the wartorn fields of Europe after 1919 when the guns fell silent. An entire generation of young men had become doomed to wander in a world with no sense of meaning. No sense of hope. In America, the last to join the 1st Great War, did not go unspared in this affliction. There seemed to be no guiding light for the world to follow.

Then Came the powered ones. The Vigilantes. The Villains. The Demigods.

How or why it happened, no one is quite sure, but according to all known research of the time, A number of children, born from 1884 onwards, young enough to escape the hells of war, began to randomly manifest powers and/or abilities far beyond those of mortal man sometime in 1919 following the end of the war. Such manifestations usually occurred around the ages of 13 to 18 and were based on everything from the wielder's interests to their employment to their personality to their deepest desires and fantasies. Most kept these strange new talents hidden, a third didn't. Of the two-thirds that remained, one Third chose to use their powers for selfishness, greed, and other heartless purposes. The other third...became our first heroes. they were the first of the costumed and Uniformed do-gooders with their masks and capes and codenames. The ones who chose, perhaps unconsciously, to restore the faith that had been lost in the aftermath of conflict. By 1921, one of the biggest concentrations of superpowered vigilantes in the United States, next to NYC, was on the West Coast. In particular, in Los Angelis.

The year is now 1922, Spring, April in LA, California. These are the Champions of old. These are their stories.

So, here is the OOC introduction from the interest check. Just a heads up that everyone is welcome to join as they have an intermediate to advanced writing level. Los Angelis is the main setting for this piece, as you have read and our setting is in the early years of superheroics which started in April 8th, 1922, though it may well extend into May if things go well enough. Feel free to chat and App, we have plenty of time. ^^

Two general questions:

1. How powerful are these strange new talents? I know that typically, Golden Age-style super heroes are not terribly powerful - and I hope that's the case here, since I find it to be more fun and challenging - but it's good to have a general idea of that sort of thing.

2. What's the tone of the game? Is it traditional Golden Age-y? Darker than that? I have an idea for a character, but of course fine-tuning a powerset is often influenced by the game's tone.

The tone is like a mix of pulp realism and mysticism, mixed with the lighter tones of the Golden Age of Comics. As for the powers, think of them as being like, say, the Quirks in My Hero Academia. Everyone gets one power but with plenty of ways to use it so that they can make things interesting.

One thing I wanna ask everyone here. Should Aliens also be included in this mix? I'm thinking about letting them be an option.

Hm, so long as they arrived by some method other than advanced spacecraft I'm not opposed to it per se. Otherwise their tech would insanely out class that of humanity's.

Name: Hardy Jay

Alias: Buck Thorn

Age: 21

Gender: Male

Height: 6'1"

Weight: 190 lbs.

Personality: Hardy is energetic, outgoing, and optimistic.

Powers/Abilities/Weaknesses Description:

Powers: Hardy can alter the surfaces of objects close to him (including his own skin) to produce multiple hard, thorn-like projections of varying length (about 25 cm max.). On his own body, he can cause rows of tiny projections to improve his grip or footing, or make his skin abrasive and painful to the touch. It has not occurred to him to turn his fists into cestus-like weapons, or use elbow spikes and the like. At short range only (maybe 10 meters or so), he can use this ability to cause objects to cling together (like cockleburs), trip or tangle up another person, or ward or block off a small area.

Abilities: Hardy has a broad general knowledge of machines, plumbing, and carpentry. His physical abilities are in no way "Super," but he's a strapping farm boy who excelled at high school sports. While not a formally-trained fighter, he knows how to scrap.

Weaknesses: Hardy is a very picture of the naïve farm boy trying to make it in the big city. His naivete and gullibility means he gets fooled or misled more than many.

Backstory: Hardy won a trip to LA after winning a talent contest in Kansas. He decided to stay and try to become a movie star. He hasn't had much luck, though, and makes a meager living as a handy-man. He is happy to use his powers to help those that need helping, but his dream is that somehow his powers can lead to a career in the movies.

I would be interested in joining this roleplay if there is still room, I had an idea for a character who is a mixture of John Constantine and Rorschach. Or if that doesn't work then perhaps an occult-powered detective.

Hi, I'm a big fan of this so far and it looks really cool!

My idea is for sort of a mostly cephalopod themed superheroine in terms of powers (super strong and flexible tentacles and body, limited shapeshifting/camouflage, able to swim at high speeds through water jet propulsion, limited regeneration, can shoot high pressure ink or water from hands or mouth etc) but taking some cues from Aquaman or Namor as well.

In terms of secret identity stuff I was thinking of tying her to the Filipino diaspora somehow since 1920's California is kind of a big time for that and something I can speak to a little culturally, but not sure could just go with the underwater civilization angle.
