NOTE: To avoid some of the issues with my past RPs from repeating themselves, I want to say right out of the gate that my tolerance for poor writing, plotholes, and ignorance of established lore has diminished considerably in recent years. Because of that, I am only looking for co-writers who take their craft seriously, who proofread their posts to ensure there are no plotholes, and who respect what has already been established in previous posts. If you're not sure about something, feel free to PM me to double-check before you post, and if I do notice something that falls through the cracks and I ask you to make edits, please don't take it personally.

This is an idea that just recently came to me. I haven't developed it very far yet, but figured I'd throw it out there just to see if there is any interest. At the beginning of the RP, the characters are just normal humans living in the forest town of Drachenvale, Oregon. Magical origin stories have been passed down for generations, telling of a wise and powerful sorcerer named Alistair Drachen who managed defeat Mephista the Dark Dragon Queen, trapping her soul in an amulet. He hid the artifact in a tomb deep underground in a small valley within the Cascade Mountains of Central Oregon, building the town of Drachenvale directly above it in 1858. This became the home of the Dragon Watch, a team of former monster hunters charged with guarding the amulet, which became known as the Vestige of Mephista.

Now, in 2023, those old origin stories are considered myth and legend, but many of the descendants of the Dragon Watch still reside in Drachenvale, including our characters. In modern day, most forms of magic have fallen into dormancy, and virtually all of the great beasts of legend were hunted to extinction. Only a handful of people recall the Old Kingdoms, and they are mostly hermits or scholars in secret libraries. But that all changes when the town is hit with a major earthquake, which manages to slightly crack the seal on Mephista's Tomb.

That night, her soul is partially awakened, and she reaches out into the sleeping minds of Drachenvale's residents. Seeking those who have enough dormant magical potential to be of use to her, she speaks to them in their dreams, taking the form of a young, beautiful angel. She imprints upon them a burning desire to locate her Tomb, and as if in a trance, her chosen Thralls from around the town make their way to the secret entrance in the dead of night. They enter her Tomb, break the amulet out of its cage, and they are each bathed in a different color light that grants them draconic powers.

Just then, a stranger intervenes, and our characters are lifted from their trance, much to the fury of Mephista. They recognize him as Caveman Calbert, an old hermit who built a home into the side of a mountain and rarely ventures into town. Turns out he is the last surviving member of the Dragon Watch, which had stopped recruiting new members decades ago due to the magical bloodlines becoming too diluted to wield any power. Once it was just him left and he couldn't find anyone with magical potential to replace him, Calbert cast a powerful spell to bind his soul to an amulet of his own, making him immortal so long as his Vestige remained intact.

So, Calbert is able to reseal Mephista's Tomb, but because she has marked our characters as Thralls, she can still plague their dreams. Calbert explains that the only way to combat her is to gain mastery over their new abilities so that they can eventually expel her from their minds. Thus, the training begins, all while trying to maintain the Secret Oath, an ancient promise to shield Unmagi from the whims of the Magi as much as possible. It doesn't help this effort, however, that one of the Thralls has fully succumbed to Mephista's dark influence and creates new monsters to unleash upon Drachenvale...

So, anyone interested?

Dude, your work is always top quality. I can't wait to join this one, too! :D

Honestly, though, I'm currently torn between a gung ho young man who has fire powers or, if the evil Thrall is an Alpha Bitch, the Alpha Bitch's former lackey who has mixed feelings about fighting her/the Alpha Bitch's current servant(not second in command, servant) who wants to break free of her "friend's" influence but doesn't know quite how to do that yet.

Thanks! I'm probably gonna play the evil Thrall as someone with a lot of power and influence in the town, like a mayor or a sheriff. I won't use the term "alpha" in the RP, but if you want to play the evil Thrall's former lackey, you could say he was a former intern for the mayor or a former recruit for the sheriff.

I'll let you know once I decide exactly who the evil Thrall will be. Unlike the Faerie RP, I'm holding out a bit longer on this one to get more co-writers. I probably won't develop it any further until we have at least five people other than myself on board.

Hmm...

I was going to do another idea, but on the other hand...the lackey could be a potential father figure to the others, maybe?

It really depends on what ages everyone ends up playing. The lackey doesn't necessarily need to be super old, could be late teens if a campaign intern for a mayor or early 20s if a recruit for the sheriff. But also feel free to use whatever other ideas you had, everything is still in flux and nothing is written in stone yet.

Well I'm interested, as for characters I was thinking of maybe a book worm turned Artificer. or if that doesn't fit, I can come up with something else

Welcome, and thanks for the interest! What type of abilities did you have in mind for the Artificer?

Hmmm... Since they have no knowledge of anything magical prior to their encounter with the amulet, we would need to do her abilities in such a way that works with the story. If she's a bookworm, maybe she read a lot of stuff on fantasy machines from fictional stories, and her new powers somehow give her the ability to build those machines for real. Or another idea is that she develops the ability to read special magical writing in Calbert's collected books that even he himself never managed to read. Like, when anyone looks at the pages, the writing seems like a jumbled mess, but her brain is able to put it together and reveals plans and blueprints for machines that can aide them in their fight against Mephista, her corrupted Thrall, and their army of monsters.

both of those sound great. hey the ability to decipher those special books, is how she gets the ability to build the machines, they give her the plans and blueprints on how to build and connect the pieces, and she gets the inspiration on what to build from her fantasy novels. I think she's also able to power the pieces while she's in them or holding them, so the ones she's using directly don't need fuel. but she can still build a fuel system if the gadget needs to function remotely.

Yeah! Like, in addition to the books, maybe part of her ability is to see secret aspects of things in general, and she is able to use that to draw out hidden power within ancient crystals and use those as fuel sources for her machines. And maybe I could create an extra character who gains a form of geomancy and can manipulate rocks, crystals, metals, etc. Those two would work great together; she is the brains behind the machines, and he is the brawn, retrieving and shaping the different parts she needs. She could have a notebook where she translates the books and recreates the blueprints in a form he can understand, and then he uses that to craft the various parts and gears and whatever else she needs. Then she uses those parts to put the machines together and power them or something. Of course, that is completely up to you. If you'd like her to be solely responsible for the machines, that's totally fine too XD.

I like it sounds like fun, and I like that she'd have someone to more directly share in the inventions that way. She does have the ability to do it all herself if needed, but they do get along well and she's more then happy to let him do the heavy lifting if he wants. so they do end up working together a ton.

Can I be the geomancer instead of you(if you and ktramos are okay with that, I mean)? The idea sounds more interesting than what I had anyway.

Not at the moment. xD

I just have the idea of a young man who’s bored of being in this small town, but really likes the magic stuff.

Sure, I have no problem with that XD.

One idea is to give him an overactive imagination from being so bored, and his power manifests as manipulating light into illusions or something.

For my main character, I think I'm going to give him the ability to channel the essences of ancient magical beasts and temporarily have their powers or something. Kinda like Ben 10.

I'm fine with that long as I get a buddy to play with.

I did have two other ideas I thought might also stir the pot a little more, but can be left out if need be.

what if the geomancer and the artifacer knew each other before this all went down? could be another reason they where so quick to start working together. while they haven't worked on anything like this before, it would make more sense that they are the first person she asks.

And What if my character started out as a guy, but somehow when the powers where granted it transformed them into a girl? I think it would give some extra fun problems for them to work though

We'd have to make sure we are respectful when portraying someone changing genders. I have zero tolerance for transphobia of any kind, so I don't want anyone to write their characters as "weirded out" by the change or anything of the sort. One way to do that is to have the character be genderfluid prior to their exposure to the amulet, and part of their powers centers around shifting their body between masculine and feminine forms depending on how they identify at any given time. Another option is to say the character was already transitioning from male to female, and the amulet granted their deep-seeded desire to have a body that matches their mind. However, having a normal, cis male who suddenly has a permanent female body might tilt a little too far towards transphobia for my taste.
