I think it's more a matter that a temple in a Medieval Stasis European Fantasy country like Estival, Velt, Thaln, etc. wouldn't have people filling the role of Miko. Something similar, perhaps, in the way that a lot of cultures have had similar roles, but not specific and similar enough to use the exact same term.


If the issue is that Estival doesn't have a suitable environment, that's as easy a fix as just deleting that specific name, and saying it's a generic template with a foreign culture.

My problem is that fix reduces any sense of culture and heritage from my character being an foreigner in a small part of a larger whole. I can't see how the Harpies flying to Akitsushima, settling there for a season, then returning Estival, and bringing back the culture and heritage they assimilated from Akitsushima back with them would be a problem overall.

Flying or no, given the relative state of the game world and how it compares to its real-world parallels, that level of movement unassociated with acts of conquest or the like is nearly unheard of until hitting the renaissance, age of sail and colonialism and all that. There was some level of cultural diffusion and knowledge of far-flung places, sure, but it was rarely accurate, and the further apart two areas were the more and more fantastical it all became.

It's like imagining a family of English folk from the 1200s migrating all the way to India, living there and assimilating, and then coming back. Sure, the aristocracy had some knowledge of India, but once you got past the Mediterranean and the Levant it became more a subject of myth and speculation than anything concrete barring an understanding of the spice trade. Nor was England nearly as cosmopolitan to foreigners showing up and just doing their thing as the Romans centuries before might have been.

Then, you add on wings and feathers to the random group of people just showing up and asking to move in in some abnormal language, and if I was an average peasant living in fantasy Japan where the only non-humans I might have much interaction with were still much less distinguishable than harpies are, I might be more inclined to grab a torch and some large farming implement and say "hell no!"

Just to focus even more specifically for this setting - it's even been mentioned before that while diplomats, on official business and all that, do get to Thaln, Velt, etc. from Akitsushima, it's a long ways and seems fairly rare from what I've gathered. There's a whole continent between this one and Akitsushima that has more contact. Were I you, I'd send some DMs to the GMs and see what you can work out with something more like that. Maybe be our Ibrahim ibn Yaqub rather than our reverse Jan Joosten van Lodensteijn.

If you're arrogant enough that somebody trying to be at-all helpful is what causes you to offer this sort of response, then I'll give up and just respond in kind:

Your response of "but migratory birds" is a lot more of a cop-out than the actual creator of the RP's response about what species live where in their world could ever be, and crows (as per your stated crow lineage) are only very short-dostance migratory at most, and generally just permanent residents of where they live, certainly not ocean-and-continent-crossing like others.

A roughly-human-sized harpy would probably have more trouble covering that distance anyways, compared to, y'know, an actual bird.

Your counterargument is lazy and doesn't work.

There are no harpies in Akitsushima. It's a distance of over ten thousand miles and two oceans. To boot, the closest thing to an ancestral home for them is actually over the veil, so that's another reduction in the odds any would resettle on literally the opposite side of the world and then traipse back.

It's not a matter of arrogance. I did not ask you for critique or assistance. I was directly talking to the GM. It's aggravating to be answered by someone else not involved. It pollutes the conversation by adding outside opinions. You just telling me to "do this, do that," without letting the GM or Co-GM answer didn't help, either.

The distance thing is information I didn't actually have. I can see, now, why that wouldn't actually work as well as I wanted. Knowing that, I would change my character concept to something that does work. I don't think my counterargument was lazy, but flawed from a lack of information.

I've really only played Three Houses, so outside of that, I am, admittedly, ignorant.

@Enkryption: Harpies aren't migratory, and aren't native to Akitsushima. That's my final say on this topic and those have been a consistent part of the setting since I even had the idea of harpies existing in it in the first place.

In a theoretical situation, maybe you could have one ride over on a boat, because that's a very long distance for someone human-sized and mostly human-shaped to fly.

To put it simply it wouldn't turn out like this.

I've tried to be very patient with you, so please listen to me when I address your ideas.

Most of them have simply not fit the RP concept or the setting particularly well, and this one is no different in that regard.

I've stated multiple times that I'm very open to being asked any questions any prospective player might have, so if you wanted a foreign character you could have started there by asking me about where they could come from. You didn't even know if the setting had a Japan equivalent before making a Japanese-themed character, when if you'd asked you could have found out that it does but it's also not somewhere a harpy would come from.

Please listen to me when I make a statement about the setting. It's one I've worked on for a long time and so I do know it very well, when I mention a detail it's because it's relevant. And please ask questions, something not being in the OP doesn't mean it's free real estate or it doesn't exist, just that it wasn't immediately relevant.

I'm going to finally ask for everyone aside from GMs to cease responding and allow us to handle anything related to Enkyrption's character creation.

In hindsight, I feel like it would have been better to take my character to PMs, so she could've been sorted better and cleaner with all... above. That said, the cast is kinda on the big size, so I think I will bow out. 10 characters is a lot to keep track of.

Could I ask for more information on the continent that Nem come from? I thought it might be fun to play a Nem merchant from afar, who carries a variety of interesting items and has excellent cooking skills. Since it seems like a combat-oriented game, she'll have the ability to protect herself, but she'd nominally be in a sort of item support role.

I'd like to know about their culture, any major imports or exports, and of course the cuisine. Oh, and the name of the continent and/or the countries in it.

Also, I'd like to know about any interesting fantasy items I could carry if the concept doesn't sound too bizarre. Potions, alchemical flasks, enchanted items, etc

@Octo: Nem culture is built around closely-knit villages primarily, though there are a couple big cities. They primarily live in the continent's arid regions, in white stone villages with larger underground complexes beneath them.

Nem primarily worship Illa-Nem, their chief goddess, who appears as a beautiful Nem goddess and represents the night itself, though they also have many other deities(like the largely-negative Yrrah, a flaming titan with a whip of fire who represents sunlight, an amusing contrast with the Sun Goddess Reon).

Most Nem's lives revolve around their nocturnal lifestyle, but Nem who move north often try to realign their schedules to fit with the local peoples, with varying degrees of success in this endeavor. Nem value resourcefulness and cunning, but also the bonds between one another, stemming from their now-distant nomadic origins.

Worship of Illa-Nem is conducted through priestesses, ranging from their early to late teens and living in communal housing in Nem villages. Nem are considered adult when they reach sixteen, and it is custom to through a lavish coming of age party involving the entire settlement(or at least those living in the same area in larger settlements).

Nem raise a unique breed of dog, known as Ivrizahn Hounds, to serve as mounts.

Nem language lacks the "B" sound, which is something they struggle a bit with when learning other languages.

A northern stereotype of Nem is that they're thieves. It's especially common in Ithillin, but it's not like Velt is that much better about it.

As for cuisine... Nem cuisine is pretty varied, with one of their famous dishes being Sandcrab(or tytufo in their language). The most famous recipe for sandcrab features cooking it up with a bunch of spices in its own shell. They also make a paste out of a variety of sweet desert melon, sometimes used as a dessert and sometimes used as a flavor for other dishes.

In terms of imports and exports, they import a lot of metals(not that they have none, it's just far easier to inport them) and export a lot of glasswork and some of the more unique Nem weapons(the largest of their swords, Mahlar, serving as an effective single-edged curved longsword in the hands of larger races).

I'll admit the continent and countries don't have a name yet, I've just never figured out something I liked for them. ^^;

As for what she could have, Nem alcohol(which is kind of pathetically weak for any other races but works for some purposes) is one, nem weapons and glass, varies healing items and enchanted items, including potions and jewelry/weapons, basically anything that seems suitable for a fantasy merchant is probably okay.

Off the top of my head that's most of the relevant information.

Is there any real life analogue for their food and/or naming conventions that I could take inspiration from? I'd like to give her a name that reflects the region she's from, and maybe come up with my own dishes as well. Spiced crab and melon paste is a good start, though. Pragmatic, flavorful, and communal dishes come to mind.

Oh, and since she'll have been in Velt for a while, she'll have wanted to learn their food too. Any small information about that would be appreciated as well.

@Octo: A few examples of female Nem names include things like Essyrah, Tili, Ynah, Fariha, Nyhi, and Vahna.

I think the best inspiration for their food would be to look up the kind of cuisine arid communities eat, as their culture doesn't entirely have a one-to-one analogue and is sort of a mishmash of inspirations from different cultures of similar regions. I do actually have some parts of the nem language figured out that I can send along in a PM.

As for Veltan cuisine, Velt is primarily modeled on Britain, so you can run along those lines for food. One of the examples I do have figured out for sure is a roasted duck breast sliced and presented with vegetables, but I've suddenly blanked out on what I called it. ^^;
